The new information is covered either in\r\n the files mentioned above or in the on-line documentation. In the\r\n on-line documentation, new items that do not appear anywhere in the\r\n printed documentation are indicated with the Greek character Omega. \r\n Items that have been revised significantly since the documentation\r\n was printed are indicated with the Sigma character.\r\n \r\n The on-line documentation system consists of the Norton Instant\r\n Access Engine (NG.EXE) and several documentation databases that are\r\n listed below:\r\n \r\n C5G01A.NG The Guide To Clipper \r\n (Clipper language and reference tables)\r\n \r\n C5G02A.NG Error Messages \r\n (Compiler, linker, runtime, RMAKE error messages)\r\n \r\n C5G03A.NG Extend System \r\n (Extend function reference documentation)\r\n \r\n C5G04A.NG Utilities \r\n (Utilities reference documentation)\r\n \r\n C5G05A.NG Release Notes\r\n (Change summaries and topical information)\r\n \r\n C5G06A.NG Sample Reference\r\n (Reference for sample programs)\r\n \r\n All of the documentation databases and the Instant Access Engine are\r\n installed in the default configuration into \\NG which exists at the\r\n same level as the \\CLIPPER5 directory.\r\n \r\n Within the Instant Access Engine's Options:Database pick list, the\r\n names of the Clipper 5.01 documentation databases are formatted as\r\n follows:\r\n \r\n Clipper 5.01a >> The Guide To Clipper\r\n ^ ^ ^ ^\r\n | | | |_____ documentation database name \r\n | | |__________ database revision number\r\n | |______________ product version number\r\n |______________________ product name\r\n\r\n========================================================================\r\n4 Installation Problems\r\n\r\n This section provides information on the installation procedure for\r\n Clipper 5.01. If you have problems installing the software, consult\r\n the following list of problems and solutions. If you experience an\r\n installation problem not listed here, please contact Nantucket\r\n Support at the Nantucket office serving your country. Telephone\r\n numbers appear in the Contacting Nantucket section of the Product\r\n and Services Guide.\r\n \r\n When contacting Nantucket Support, have ready information about your\r\n environment such as: machine make and model, DOS version, memory\r\n available during installation, and any memory-resident software you\r\n are using.\r\n\r\n\r\n4.1 Command-line Arguments\r\n\r\n The following table shows the command-line arguments for\r\n INSTALL.EXE.\r\n \r\n Table: INSTALL.EXE Command-line Arguments\r\n -------------------------------------------------------------------\r\n Argument Description\r\n -------------------------------------------------------------------\r\n /NOSWAP Do not swap to EMS or disk\r\n /BW Monochrome for color display (for Laptops)\r\n /MONO Force monochrome display\r\n -------------------------------------------------------------------\r\n\r\n\r\n4.2 Problems and Solutions\r\n\r\n Some common problems that may occur during installation are listed\r\n below:\r\n \r\n 1. Problem: Missing files due to insufficient disk space on the\r\n target drive.\r\n \r\n Solution: Make more space available on the target drive and\r\n then run the install program again.\r\n \r\n 2. Problem: Insufficient memory to build utilities (\"memory\r\n overbooked\" messages).\r\n \r\n Solution: To build the utilities, INSTALL requires\r\n approximately 400KB of free memory when INSTALL.EXE is invoked. \r\n Make additional memory available by rebooting your computer\r\n without memory resident utilities or network software, then run\r\n INSTALL again. Alternatively, you can build the utility\r\n programs manually (see Building Utilities Manually below).\r\n \r\n 3. Problem: System hangs while building utilities.\r\n \r\n Solution: The install script file includes a SET PATH command\r\n to add some necessary directories to the PATH environment\r\n variable. Under some versions of DOS, attempting to increase\r\n the length of the PATH environment variable beyond 128 bytes\r\n causes COMMAND.COM to hang. Remove unnecessary entries from\r\n PATH and run INSTALL again. Alternatively, you can build the\r\n utility programs manually (see Building Utilities\r\n Manually below).\r\n\r\n\r\n4.3 Modifying Your Environment Variables\r\n\r\n Certain environment (SET command) variables should be set for\r\n Clipper 5.01. If you elected to modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT file\r\n during the installation process, your file should be up-to-date. \r\n Otherwise, the appropriate settings should be in a file called\r\n AUTOEXEC.CHG located in the \\CLIPPER5 directory. In either case,\r\n it is important that you modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to\r\n incorporate these additional settings so that Clipper 5.01 will\r\n know where to find files. The required settings are as follows:\r\n \r\n 1. The PATH variable should include the directory where Clipper\r\n 5.01 executable files reside (example: C:\\CLIPPER5\\BIN).\r\n \r\n 2. The LIB variable should include the directory where Clipper 5.01\r\n library files reside (example: C:\\CLIPPER5\\LIB).\r\n \r\n 3. The INCLUDE variable should include the directory where Clipper\r\n 5.01 include files reside (example: C:\\CLIPPER5\\INCLUDE).\r\n \r\n 3. The PLL variable should include the directory where Clipper 5.01\r\n pre-linked library files reside (example: C:\\CLIPPER5\\PLL).\r\n \r\n For example:\r\n \r\n SET PATH=C:\\CLIPPER5\\BIN;%PATH% \r\n SET LIB=C:\\CLIPPER5\\LIB \r\n SET INCLUDE=C:\\CLIPPER5\\INCLUDE\r\n SET PLL=C:\\CLIPPER5\\INCLUDE\r\n \r\n You may also wish to set other environment variables. For more\r\n information, refer to the Getting Started Guide and Programming and\r\n Utilities Guide. For general information about the DOS environment\r\n and setting environment variables, refer to your DOS manual.\r\n\r\n\r\n4.4 Building Utilities Manually\r\n\r\n Certain Clipper 5.01 utility programs (DBU, PE, RL) are supplied in\r\n source code form. These utilities must be compiled and linked\r\n before they can be used. INSTALL will optionally install and\r\n build these utilities automatically. If you elected not to install\r\n or build the utilities or if INSTALL failed to build them\r\n successfully, they may be built manually.\r\n \r\n Before the utilities can be successfully built, the following\r\n requirements must be met:\r\n \r\n 1. The Clipper 5.01 executables, libraries, and include files (the\r\n files in C:\\CLIPPER5\\BIN, C:\\CLIPPER5\\LIB, and\r\n C:\\CLIPPER5\\INCLUDE, respectively) must be properly installed.\r\n \r\n 2. Your environment variables must be set correctly (see above).\r\n \r\n 3. The source files for the desired utility must be available. If\r\n the source files have not been transferred from the distribution\r\n disks, you can retrieve them using the INSTALL program.\r\n \r\n Each utility includes a make file (a .RMK file used by RMAKE) that\r\n will compile and link the utility. To make a utility, simply go to\r\n the appropriate directory and execute RMAKE on the script (.RMK)\r\n file. For example, to make the Database Utility, enter the\r\n following commands:\r\n \r\n C:\r\n CD \\CLIPPER5\\SOURCE\\DBU\r\n RMAKE DBU\r\n COPY DBU.EXE \\CLIPPER5\\BIN\r\n COPY DBU.HLP \\CLIPPER5\\BIN\r\n \r\n Note that the make files for building the Clipper 5.01 utilities\r\n create the .EXE file in the current directory. If you copy the\r\n executable file into the \\CLIPPER5\\BIN directory, it will be\r\n accessible via SET PATH.\r\n\r\n\r\n4.5 Building BASE50.PLL Manually\r\n\r\n Pre-linked libraries (.PLL files) allow faster linking and code\r\n sharing among different applications. The distribution disks\r\n contain a linker script file (BASE50.LNK) which will create a\r\n general purpose .PLL called BASE50.PLL (for information on building\r\n and using .PLL files, refer to the Programming and Utilities\r\n Guide).\r\n \r\n BASE50.PLL is optionally created during installation. If you\r\n elected not to create BASE50.PLL or if the install program did not\r\n create it successfully, you can create it manually. Before\r\n BASE50.PLL can be successfully created, the following requirements\r\n must be met:\r\n \r\n 1. The PLL directory (\\CLIPPER5\\PLL) must be created and the\r\n BASE50.LNK file must reside in it. If this file has not been\r\n transferred from the distribution disks, you can retrieve it\r\n using the INSTALL program.\r\n \r\n To build the BASE50.PLL, enter the following commands:\r\n \r\n C:\r\n CD \\CLIPPER5\\PLL\r\n RTLINK @BASE50\r\n\r\n========================================================================\r\n5 Distribution Disk Contents\r\n\r\n This section provides information regarding the contents of the\r\n Clipper 5.01 distribution disks. The files are described in general\r\n terms of their contents followed by several tables showing the\r\n various disk configurations.\r\n\r\n\r\n5.1 Documentation Files\r\n\r\n The README file that you are viewing now is located on Disk 1.\r\n\r\n\r\n5.2 Disk Identifier Files\r\n\r\n Each disk in the Clipper 5.01 package contains a file named DISK.ID\r\n that is used by the install program to verify version and disk\r\n number.\r\n\r\n\r\n5.3 Install Files\r\n\r\n The install program (INSTALL.EXE) and the installation script\r\n (INSTALL.DAT) are located on Disk 1. Together, these two files\r\n allow you to install Clipper 5.01 onto your hard disk.\r\n\r\n\r\n5.4 Archive Files\r\n\r\n The Clipper 5.01 distribution files are supplied in the form of\r\n archive files. Most of the archive files have a .LIF extension,\r\n but the file containing the main documentation database is split up\r\n into two files with .001 and .002 extensions. Each of the archive\r\n files is listed in the table below, followed by several tables\r\n showing the contents of each archive file.\r\n \r\n \r\n Table: Archive File
