How to Get Help\r\n2. Installation\r\n3. System Requirements\r\n4. Turbo Help\r\n5. Features\r\n6. Release Notes\r\n7. Windows 3.1 Redistributable license\r\n\r\n1. HOW TO GET HELP\r\n-------------------\r\nIf you have any problems, please read this file, the *.DOC files\r\nin \\TPW\\DOC, and the Turbo Pascal manuals first. If you still\r\nhave a question and need assistance, help is available from the\r\nfollowing sources:\r\n\r\n1. Type GO BORLAND on the CompuServe bulletin board system. If\r\n you are not a member of CompuServe, see the enclosed brochure.\r\n\r\n2. Check with your software dealer or user group.\r\n\r\n3. If you have an urgent problem and you have sent in the license\r\n agreement that accompanied this package, you may call the\r\n Borland Technical Support Department at (408) 461-9144. Please\r\n have the following information ready before calling:\r\n\r\n a. Product name and serial number from the distribution disks.\r\n\r\n b. Computer brand, model, and the brands and model numbers of\r\n any additional hardware.\r\n\r\n c. Operating system and version number. (The version number\r\n can be determined by typing VER at the DOS prompt. The\r\n Windows version number is displayed in the Program\r\n Manager's About Box.)\r\n\r\n d. Contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, TPW.INI and\r\n WIN.INI files.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n2. INSTALLATION\r\n---------------\r\n\r\nNOTE: Before running the INSTALL program, you should disable any\r\nWindows screen savers. The install process will not complete\r\nproperly if interrupted by a screen saver.\r\n\r\nNOTE: The installation program needs at least 1MB of free memory\r\nto run.\r\n\r\nUse the INSTALL program to install Turbo Pascal for Windows. The\r\nfiles on the distribution disks are all archived and INSTALL will\r\nde-archive them, place them into subdirectories and automatically\r\ncreate configuration files for both the command-line compiler and\r\nthe Integrated Development Environment (IDE). All further\r\nreferences to directory paths in this README file assume you've\r\nused INSTALL's default directory structure.\r\n\r\nTo run the installation program from Drive A type\r\n\r\n WIN A:INSTALL\r\n\r\nor, if Windows is active, select Program Manager's File|Run\r\ncommand and type\r\n\r\n A:INSTALL\r\n\r\nInstall will unpack the compressed archive files (*.PAK) into\r\nsubdirectories on your hard disk. These files can also be\r\nunpacked manually using the UNPAK.EXE utility. Your system must\r\nhave at least two megabytes of memory available to run Turbo\r\nPascal for Windows. Neither the Install program nor Turbo Pascal\r\nfor Windows will run in real mode.\r\n\r\nPath Information\r\n----------------\r\nIf you want to use the command line utilities provided with TPW\r\n1.5, you will need to add the \\TPW\\UTILS directory to your DOS\r\npath. Other than these utilities, TPW does not require any of\r\nits components to be listed on the DOS path.\r\n\r\nInstalling over Turbo Pascal for Windows Version 1.0\r\n----------------------------------------------------\r\nYou can install Turbo Pascal for Windows Version 1.5 to the same\r\ndirectory as version 1.0. You can delete the Whitewater Resource\r\nToolkit (located in \\TPW\\UTILS) in favor of using Resource\r\nWorkshop, if desired. The files you can delete are: WRT.DAT,\r\nWRT.EXE, WRT.FON, WRT.IMA, and WRT.HLP. In addition, updated\r\nversions of some Resource Workshop demos are located in the\r\nResource Workshop demo directory (\\TPW\\RWDEMOS). You can delete\r\nany duplicates of these newer files (located in \\TPW\\OWLDEMOS)\r\nalso.\r\n\r\nOnline Help under Windows 3.0\r\n-----------------------------\r\nIn order to access online help for Turbo Pascal or Resource\r\nWorkshop, you must have the help system from Windows 3.1. If the\r\nInstall program detects that you are running Windows 3.0, it will\r\nattempt to rename your current versions of WINHELP.EXE and\r\nWINHELP.HLP, and replace them with the newer Windows 3.1 versions\r\nof the same files. If this process fails (the Install program\r\nwill alert you if this happens), you will need to manually copy\r\nthe WINHELP.EXE and WINHELP.HLP from the \\TPW directory to your\r\nWindows directory.\r\n\r\nNote: If you installed under Windows 3.1, these files were not\r\ncopied to your hard disk, since you already have the correct\r\nversions in your \\WINDOWS directory.\r\n\r\n\r\n3. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS\r\n----------------------\r\nTurbo Pascal for Windows requires at least 2 MB of RAM and runs\r\non EGA, VGA (and above) and Hercules monochrome video adapters\r\nunder Windows 3.0 and 3.1.\r\n\r\n\r\n4. TURBO HELP\r\n-------------\r\nThe fastest way to get help on any Turbo Pascal or Windows API\r\nfeature is to use the online help system. Pull down the Help menu\r\nby typing Alt-H or press F1 for more information. TDW has its own\r\nhelp system and help file as well.\r\n\r\n\r\n5. FEATURES\r\n-----------\r\nNew features in Turbo Pascal for Windows 1.5 include\r\n\r\n o Syntax Highlighting in the editor - Language elements (e.g.,\r\n reserved words, identifiers) are highlighted with selectable\r\n colors and fonts. Refer to the \"Syntax Highlighting\" help\r\n topic for complete documentation on this feature.\r\n\r\n o SpeedBar - Click an icon to perform common IDE operations,\r\n such as File|Open or Compile|Make. Refer to the \"SpeedBar\"\r\n help topic (Help|Search) for complete documentation on this\r\n feature.\r\n\r\n o Resource Workshop - Use Borland's award-winning tool to\r\n create and modify your menu, dialog, and other Windows 3.0\r\n and 3.1 resources.\r\n\r\n o Full Access to Windows 3.1 - All the TPUs, DLLs and utilities\r\n you need to take full advantage of the new Windows 3.1\r\n features including Object Linking and Embedding (OLE),\r\n Multimedia, TrueType fonts, PenWindows, etc. Note: you must\r\n have Windows 3.1 to take advantage of these features.\r\n\r\n o New demo programs:\r\n\r\n COMMDLGS.PAS - How to access new Common Dialogs DLL\r\n DDEMLCLI.PAS - Example of a DDE client application\r\n DDEMLSVR.PAS - Example of a DDE server\r\n MCISOUND.PAS - Using MCI sound capabilities\r\n (requires special hardware)\r\n OLECLI.PAS - OLE client application\r\n OLESERVR.PAS - OLE server application\r\n OWLPEN.PAS - PenWindows example\r\n (requires Pen or MS compatible mouse)\r\n PAINT.PAS - Complete paint program\r\n SHELLDEM.PAS - Win 3.1 Shell API demo\r\n TTDEMO.PAS - Shows how to access new TrueType fonts\r\n\r\n (These programs and their accompanying files are located in\r\n the \\TPW\\OWLDEMOS directory. PAINT.PAS is in\r\n \\TPW\\OWLDEMOS\\PAINT.)\r\n\r\n o Easy access to Borland Window Custom Controls (BWCC) by using\r\n the BWCC unit provided. Place this unit in your \"uses\" clause\r\n to convert all dialogs and windows from StdDlgs and StdWnds\r\n to BWCC style. The BWCC unit replaces the WObjectB and\r\n StdDlgsB units that came with previous versions of Resource\r\n Workshop.\r\n\r\nOther Turbo Pascal for Windows features include\r\n\r\n o Windows IDE - A Windows-hosted environment that is a full MDI\r\n application. You can edit and compile files in the IDE and\r\n then call TDW to debug your programs. (The IDE even has\r\n optional Wordstar compatible keys. Select the alternate\r\n command set on the Options|Preferences dialog.)\r\n\r\n o The compiler and RTL have many extensions for programming\r\n under Windows (see below). Refer to the demo programs in the\r\n \\TPW\\WINDEMOS directory.\r\n\r\n o ObjectWindows - An application framework and library that\r\n provides an object-oriented layer to Windows programming. Use\r\n ObjectWindows' object-oriented techniques to build powerful\r\n Windows applications quickly. ObjectWindows (OWL) demo\r\n programs are in the \\TPW\\OWLDEMOS directory. OWL itself is in\r\n the \\TPW\\OWL directory.\r\n\r\n o TDW - A special version of the Turbo Debugger that debugs\r\n Windows 3.0 and 3.1 applications. TDW runs in text mode and\r\n can be launched from the IDE via the RUN|DEBUGGER menu.\r\n\r\n o uses display swapping to support single monitor debugging\r\n o full support for Windows DLLs\r\n o break on Windows messages\r\n\r\n See README.TDW in the \\TPW\\DOC directory for the latest\r\n information about TDW.\r\n\r\n o Help system compiler - Use the help compiler to create\r\n Windows' online help for your programs. The help compiler\r\n (HC.BAT) is in the \\TPW\\UTILS directory. The help examples\r\n are in the \\TPW\\DOCDEMOS\\HELPEX directory.\r\n\r\n o Other compiler and runtime library features:\r\n\r\n o Windows Crt unit (WinCrt) for writing \"standard\" programs\r\n that use Writeln and Readln (see \\TPW\\WELCOME.PAS).\r\n o Dynamic Method Tables\r\n o Full support for Windows-style null-terminated strings\r\n o Link in Windows resource Files ($R directive)\r\n o Full support for DLLs (Dynamic Link Libraries).\r\n\r\nA full suite of DOS command-line utilities, including a DOS\r\ncommand-line compiler (TPCW.EXE) that produces Windows programs,\r\nMAKE.EXE, and a Windows resource compiler (RC.EXE) are also\r\nprovided.\r\n\r\n\r\n6. RELEASE NOTES\r\n----------------\r\n\r\nConfiguration Files\r\n-------------------\r\n o TPW 1.5 uses the TPW.CFG to store configuration data. This\r\n file is intended to be modified only through the Integrated\r\n Development Environment's dialog boxes. Editing this file in\r\n any other way may result in loss of configuration data.\r\n\r\n\r\nRuntime Libraries\r\n-----------------\r\n o This version of the Turbo Pascal compiler is fully backwards\r\n compatible with version 1.0. However, WOBJECTS.TPU has been\r\n updated. Any third party units which list WOBJECTS in their\r\n \"uses\" clause will therefore report a \"Unit version mismatch\"\r\n error when compiling. If you do not have the source code to\r\n these third party units, you can either: a) continue to use\r\n the WOBJECTS.TPU from TPW 1.0, or b) contact the author for\r\n an updated unit. Units to which you do have source code can\r\n be recompiled using the Compile|Build option.\r\n\r\n\r\nIntegrated Development Environment\r\n----------------------------------\r\n o The editor's Block Overwrite option is set to ON by default.\r\n This is a change from version 1.0.\r\n\r\n o The Tile command's shortcut key is now Shift-F4, and Cascade\r\n is now Shift-F5. This is a change from version 1.0. These\r\n commands have also exchanged positions on the Window menu.\r\n\r\n\r\nParadox Engine Sample Program\r\n-----------------------------\r\n o Turbo Pascal for Windows can access Paradox data tables using\r\n the Paradox Engine 2.0 Dynamic Link Library (DLL). An example\r\n program that shows how this is done is included in the files\r\n \\TPW\\OWLDEMOS\\PXDEMO.PAS and \\TPW\\OWLDEMOS\\PXACCESS.PAS. Note\r\n that you will need the PXENGWIN.DLL and the sample Paradox\r\n data files that are included with the Paradox Engine 2.0 in\r\n order to run PXDEMO. The Paradox Engine 2.0 is available\r\n separately from Borland and includes support for DOS and\r\n Windows programming using Turbo Pascal, Borland C and C++,\r\n and other languages.\r\n\r\n\r\nResource Compiler\r\n-----------------\r\n o Turbo Pascal for Windows 1.5 produces EXE files that will run\r\n under Windows 3.0 and later. Here's a sample command line\r\n that uses the resource compiler to produce an EXE that runs\r\n only under Windows 3.1\r\n\r\n rc -31 myprog.exe\r\n\r\n\r\nHelp Compiler\r\n-------------\r\n\r\n o The Help Compiler for Windows 3.0 (HC.EXE) has been replaced\r\n by HC.BAT. This batch file can run either the Windows 3.0\r\n Help Compiler (HC30.EXE) or the Windows 3.1 Help Compiler\r\n (HC31.EXE).\r\n\r\n By default, HC.BAT executes HC30.EXE, to produce a help file\r\n that works with the versions of WINHELP.EXE in either Windows\r\n 3.0 or Windows 3.1. To take advantage of the new Help\r\n features of Windows 3.1, use \"-n\" as the first parameter to\r\n HC.BAT, which will then execute HC31.EXE.\r\n\r\n HC.BAT, HC30.EXE, HC31.EXE are located in the utilities\r\n directory. To use these utilities, you'll need to have the\r\n \\TPW\\UTILS directory listed on your DOS PATH.\r\n\r\n o There is a complete help example, HELPEX.PAS, in the\r\n directory \\TPW\\DOCDEMOS\\HELPEX. There is also a complete\r\n ObjectWindows version of this example (OWLHELP.PAS). You can\r\n use the HELPEX.MAK file to make both examples by typing\r\n\r\n make -fhelpex.mak\r\n\r\n Make sure the command-line compiler (TPCW.EXE), the help\r\n compiler (HC.BAT), the resource compiler (RC.EXE) and\r\n MAKE.EXE are all on your DOS path. If you did not use the\r\n installation program's default directory structure, you'll\r\n need to modify HELPEX.MAK accordingly.\r\n\r\n\r\nOEM vs. ANSI Character Sets\r\n---------------------------\r\n o DOS text files use the OEM character set; Windows text files\r\n generally use the ANSI character set. The demo program,\r\n FCONVERT.PAS (located in \\TPW\\OWLDEMOS) converts data back\r\n and forth between these formats. The only text files that\r\n will be affected are those containing international\r\n characters (ASCII values above 128) like the umlaut, etc. Not\r\n all OEM characters are present in the ANSI character set, and\r\n vice versa. Therefore, converting between these character\r\n sets may produce a mapping that is not reversible. Refer to\r\n your Windows documentation for further information about ANSI\r\n vs. OEM character sets.\r\n\r\n\r\nOut of Date Drivers\r\n-------------------\r\n o If your TPW IDE dialog boxes are unreadable, first delete\r\n TPW.DSK, TPW.CFG and TPW.INI files and then run the IDE\r\n again. If the problem persists, contact your video card\r\n manufacturer for an update of your video drivers, or use the\r\n VGA.DRV driver supplied with Windows by Microsoft.\r\n\r\n o If you experience difficulty in printing from the IDE, make\r\n sure you have the newest Windows 3.1 printer drivers from\r\n Microsoft or from your printer vendor.\r\n\r\n\r\nUsing the Windows 3.1 Debugging Kernel\r\n--------------------------------------\r\n o The Turbo Pascal for Windows version 1.5 IDE works under\r\n either the retail or the debugging kernel of Windows 3.1.\r\n However, you might experience problems with printing from the\r\n IDE under the debugging kernel.\r\n\r\n\r\nUsing Adobe Type Manager\r\n------------------------\r\n o Older versions of Adobe Type Manager can cause some fonts to\r\n not appear in the Options|Preferences dialog box. Adobe Type\r\n Manager version 2.0 or later corrects this problem. You can\r\n contact Adobe about upgrades at 1-800-521-1976.\r\n\r\n\r\nTurbo Pascal for DOS\r\n--------------------\r\n o A DOS version of Turbo Pascal that produces DOS programs is\r\n also available. Contact your dealer or distributor, or call\r\n Borland for upgrade information at 1-800-331-0877 (U.S.\r\n customers only).\r\n\r\n\r\n7. WINDOWS 3.1 REDISTRIBUTABLE LICENSE\r\n--------------------------------------\r\nNOTE CONCERNING USE OF MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.1 REDISTRIBUTABLES FOR\r\nAPPLICATIONS RUNNING ON MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.0\r\n\r\nThis Borland language product contains everything you need to\r\ndevelop applications to run on the most recent version of\r\nMicrosoft Windows, version 3.1. In some cases, you may need to\r\ncopy and include with your application one or more Microsoft\r\n\"redistributable\" files from a copy of version 3.1 so that your\r\napplication will also run on version 3.0. Microsoft informs us\r\nthat you may copy the redistributable files from Microsoft\r\nWindows 3.1 for this purpose.
