HOW TO GET HELP\r\n-------------------\r\n\r\n If you have any problems, please read this file, the\r\n HELPME!.DOC file, and the Turbo C manuals first. If you still\r\n have a question and need assistance, help is available from\r\n the following sources:\r\n\r\n 1. Type GO BOR on the CompuServe bulletin board system for\r\n instant access to the Borland forums with their libraries of\r\n technical information and answers to common questions.\r\n\r\n If you are not a member of CompuServe, see the enclosed special\r\n offer, and write for full details on how to receive a free\r\n IntroPak containing a $15 credit toward your first month's on-\r\n line charges.\r\n\r\n 2. Check with your local software dealer or users' group.\r\n\r\n 3. Write to us at the following address:\r\n\r\n Borland International\r\n Turbo C Technical Support\r\n 1800 Green Hills Road\r\n P.O. Box 660001\r\n Scotts Valley, CA 95066-0001\r\n\r\n Please remember to include your serial number or we will be\r\n unable to process your letter.\r\n\r\n 4. If you have an urgent problem that cannot wait and you have sent\r\n in the license agreement from the front of your manual, you may\r\n call the Borland Technical Support Department at (408) 438-5300.\r\n Please have the following information ready before calling:\r\n\r\n a. Product name and serial number on your original distribution\r\n disk. Please have your serial number ready or we will be\r\n unable to process your call.\r\n\r\n b. Product version number. The version number for Turbo C is\r\n displayed when you first load the program and before you\r\n press any keys.\r\n\r\n c. Computer brand, model, and the brands and model numbers of\r\n any additional hardware.\r\n\r\n d. Operating system and version number. (The version number can\r\n be determined by typing VER at the MSDOS prompt.)\r\n\r\n e. Contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.\r\n\r\n f. Contents of your CONFIG.SYS file.\r\n\r\n\r\n 2. INSTALLATION\r\n----------------\r\n The INSTALL/HELP disk contains a program called INSTALL.EXE that\r\n will assist you with the installation of Turbo C 2.0. There are\r\n three options for installation:\r\n\r\n 1. Hard Disk - This option allows you to pick the subdirectories\r\n where the files will be loaded. It will create a TURBOC.CFG\r\n file based on those directories.\r\n\r\n 2. Update from TC 1.5 - This allows for an easy update from version\r\n 1.5. After the files are copied, all the installed options\r\n from your current TC.EXE will be transferred to the new one.\r\n This is especially useful if you have modified the colors or\r\n editor keys.\r\n\r\n 3. Floppy Disk - This option will build either a command line or\r\n Integrated Development Environment version for a two drive\r\n system. Be sure to have three formatted disks ready before\r\n you start.\r\n\r\n To start the installation, change your current drive to the one\r\n that has the install program on it and type INSTALL. You will\r\n be given instructions in a box at the bottom of the screen for\r\n each prompt. For example, if you will be installing from drive\r\n A:, type:\r\n\r\n A:\r\n INSTALL\r\n\r\n You should read the rest of this README file to get further\r\n information about this release before you do the installation.\r\n\r\n\r\n 3. IMPORTANT NOTES\r\n-------------------\r\n\r\n o The file HELPME!.DOC contains discussions of common questions\r\n and answers concerning Turbo C 2.0. You should consult it for\r\n answers to problems that aren't covered in this file or in\r\n the manuals.\r\n\r\n o If you are running INSTALL or TCINST on a laptop or any other\r\n system that uses an LCD or composite display, you should set\r\n your system to black and white mode before running INSTALL\r\n or TCINST. You can do this from DOS with the following command\r\n line:\r\n\r\n mode bw80\r\n\r\n or, you can force INSTALL or TCINST to come up in black and\r\n white mode by using the /b switch:\r\n\r\n tcinst /b\r\n\r\n o /P PARAMETER FOR TC.EXE. A new command-line switch controls\r\n palette swapping on EGA video adapters. Using this switch\r\n\r\n tc /p hello\r\n\r\n is recommended only when the user program modifies the EGA\r\n palette registers. When /P is specified, the EGA palette will be\r\n restored each time the screen is swapped. In general, you don't\r\n need to use this switch unless your program modifies the EGA\r\n palette registers, or unless your program uses BGI to change\r\n the palette.\r\n\r\n o A program that takes over interrupt 9 cannot be debugged\r\n with the integrated debugger. Use the standalone Turbo Debugger\r\n instead.\r\n\r\n o exec() WITH NOVELL NETWORK. Versions of the Novell network\r\n system software earlier than 2.01-2 do not support a DOS\r\n call used by exec(), spawn(), and system(). If you are using\r\n the Integrated Development Environment to run a program that\r\n uses any of these functions and you have early Novell system\r\n software, run the program from DOS. To do this from the\r\n Integrated Development Environment you can use Alt-F/O.\r\n\r\n o If you used the INSTALL program to upgrade from version 1.5,\r\n or if you used CINSTXFR to transfer options from an\r\n installation of version 1.5, check the setting of the\r\n standard stack frame option in the Integrated Development\r\n Environment (Alt-O/C/C/S). If you are going to use the\r\n integrated debugger this option should be turned ON.\r\n\r\n o If you are having problems with the call stack or qualified\r\n names, make sure you have compiled with the standard stack\r\n frame option turned on.\r\n\r\n o The ANSI draft has changed the syntax of labels. A label now\r\n must always be followed by a statement. This means that code\r\n like this is no longer accepted:\r\n\r\n {\r\n .\r\n .\r\n .\r\n jump_label:\r\n }\r\n\r\n If you have code like this, change it to look like this:\r\n\r\n {\r\n .\r\n .\r\n .\r\n jump_label:\r\n ; /* need a statement here! */\r\n }\r\n\r\n o TCC has a switch to specify which assembler to look for. By\r\n default, it will look for TASM.EXE. If you want to use a\r\n different assembler, use -E<filename>, as described in the\r\n Reference Guide.\r\n\r\n o When using THELP on an AT&T 6300, be sure to use the /L25\r\n command-line option, as described in the file THELP.DOC.\r\n\r\n o When you use qualified variable names as described on page\r\n 57 of the User's Guide you don't need to use the module\r\n name to access a variable that is local to a global\r\n function. The module name is only needed when you access a\r\n static variable or a variable that is local to a static\r\n function.\r\n\r\n o Because of the limited memory available in the Tiny model,\r\n it no longer supports graphics functions.\r\n\r\n o The Version 1.5 graphics drivers (*.BGI) are not compatible\r\n with the Version 2.0 graphics library. Use the graphics drivers\r\n distributed with Version 2.0.\r\n\r\n o When used with a Zenith Z-449 card, the BGI autodetection code\r\n will always select the 640X480 enhanced EGA mode. If you are\r\n using the Z-449 with a monitor that is not compatible with\r\n this mode, it will be necessary to override the GraphDriver\r\n and GraphMode parameters used in the BGI initgraph() call.\r\n\r\n\r\n 4. CORRECTIONS TO THE MANUALS\r\n------------------------------\r\n\r\n REFERENCE GUIDE:\r\n\r\n Page\r\n\r\n 159 The prototype for the function getdefaultpallette() is\r\n incorrect. It should be\r\n\r\n struct palettetype * far _Cdecl getdefaultpalette( void );\r\n\r\n\r\nUSER'S GUIDE:\r\n\r\n Page\r\n\r\n 57 In the section entitled \"Qualifying Variable Names,\" the\r\n last sentence should read \"...need to type only myfunc.myvar.\"\r\n\r\n 66 The directions for compiling the WORDCNT program are\r\n incorrect. There is no WORDCNT.PRJ file; all you need to do\r\n is load the file WORDCNT.C into the editor. Once you have\r\n done that, the rest of the instructions are correct.\r\n\r\n 5. ADDITIONAL NOTES\r\n--------------------\r\n\r\n 5.1 NOTES FOR VERSION 1.0 & 1.5 USERS\r\n -------------------------------------\r\n\r\n o You must use the Version 2.0 libraries with the 2.0 compilers.\r\n\r\n o The Integrated Development Environment no longer displays the\r\n message \"Press any key to return to Turbo C...\" when your\r\n program terminates. Instead, at the end of your program the\r\n User screen is replaced by the Integrated Development\r\n Environment. To view the User screen, press Alt-F5 or\r\n select Alt-R/S. When you are viewing the User screen,\r\n pressing any key will return you to the Integrated\r\n Development Environment.\r\n\r\n o A new pseudo-variable has been added. _FLAGS now contains the\r\n value of the flags register so you can test the flags at any\r\n point in your program.\r\n\r\n o The ssignal() and gsignal() functions are no longer\r\n supported. See the section in this README on how to convert\r\n programs that use them.\r\n\r\n o The cprintf() function now works as documented. It does not\r\n translate line-feeds into CR/LF combinations.\r\n\r\n o Some compatibles had a problem under Version 1.5 because it\r\n used interrupt 18H. Version 2.0 does not use this interrupt,\r\n so you shouldn't encounter this problem anymore.\r\n\r\n o The program TCINST.COM in Version 1.0 has been changed to an\r\n .EXE file. You should delete the TCINST.COM program before\r\n trying to run the new TCINST.EXE. Otherwise, MS-DOS will actually\r\n run the old one.\r\n\r\n o The FILE structure for streams in Version 1.0 (but not 1.5) has\r\n been changed, so that the function tmpfile() could be implemented.\r\n You should recompile any modules that use stream I/O.\r\n\r\n 5.2 THELP\r\n ----------\r\n\r\n THELP is a memory-resident utility program that gives you\r\n access to the Turbo C context-sensitive help system from any\r\n program. You don't need to use THELP if you're in the\r\n Integrated Development Environment, but it is especially useful\r\n if you use the command line compiler and your own text editor,\r\n or if you are debugging with the standalone Turbo Debugger. To\r\n use THELP, load THELP.COM into memory by typing at the DOS\r\n command line:\r\n\r\n thelp\r\n\r\n You activate (\"pop-up\") THELP by typing its hot key -- by\r\n default numeric keypad <5>. All Turbo C help commands apply\r\n (F1, Ctrl-F1, Alt-F1). For a complete description of THELP,\r\n refer to THELP.DOC in the Documentation Subdirectory.\r\n\r\n 5.3 USING CINSTXFR.EXE\r\n ----------------------\r\n\r\n Your Turbo C 2.0 package contains a program named CINSTXFR.EXE,\r\n which can be used to transfer the configuration of the\r\n Integrated Development Environment from your copy of Turbo C\r\n 1.5 (not for 1.0) to your new installation of Turbo C 2.0. This\r\n program is run automatically by INSTALL.EXE if you select the\r\n option to \"Update Hard Drive Copy of Turbo C 1.5 to Turbo C 2.0.\"\r\n If you prefer to do this yourself, you can run CINSTXFR.EXE from\r\n the DOS command line.\r\n\r\n CINSTXFR.EXE takes two arguments: the first is the name of your\r\n Turbo C 1.5 Integrated Development Environment file (usually\r\n TC.EXE), and the second is the name of your Turbo C 2.0\r\n Integrated Development Environment file (also usually TC.EXE).\r\n Either one of these names can also include a path name.\r\n\r\n For example, if your copy of the Turbo C 1.5 Integrated\r\n Development Environment file is named TC.EXE and is in a\r\n directory named \\TURBOC and your copy of the Turbo C 2.0\r\n Integrated Development Environment file is also named TC.EXE\r\n but is located in a directory named \\TC2, the command line to\r\n copy the configuration from 1.5 to 2.0 would look like this:\r\n\r\n CINSTXFR \\TURBOC\\TC.EXE \\TC2\\TC.EXE\r\n\r\n This will transfer all the options that you installed in\r\n your copy of Turbo C 1.5 to your copy of Turbo C 2.0.\r\n\r\n CINSTXFR.EXE does not work with Turbo C 1.0. If you are\r\n upgrading from Turbo C 1.0, you will have to install the\r\n options yourself.\r\n\r\n 5.4 CHANGED SWITCHES FOR OBJXREF\r\n --------------------------------\r\n\r\n OBJXREF is an object module cross reference utility and is\r\n described on page 528 of the Turbo C Reference Guide.\r\n The /O option (object files directory) has been changed to the\r\n /D (directories) option. The switch now allows for multiple\r\n search directories to be specified. The new syntax is:\r\n\r\n OBJXREF /Ddir1[;dir2[;dir3]]\r\n or\r\n OBJXREF /Ddir1 [/Ddir2] [/Ddir3]\r\n\r\n OBJXREF will search each of the directories in the specified\r\n order for all object and library files. If no /D option is\r\n used, only the current directory will be searched. However,\r\n if a /D option is used, the current directory will NOT be\r\n searched unless it is included in the directory list. For\r\n example, to first search the BORLAND directory for files and\r\n then search the current directory, you would type\r\n\r\n OBJXREF /Dborland;.\r\n\r\n If multiple search directories are specified and a file\r\n matching the file specification is found, OBJXREF will include\r\n the file as part of the cross-reference. OBJXREF will only\r\n continue to search the other directories for the same file\r\n specification if the file specification contains wildcards.\r\n\r\n A new option has been added to allow you to specify an output\r\n file where OBJXREF will send any reports generated. The new\r\n option is the /O option, and has the following syntax:\r\n\r\n OBJXREF myfile.obj /RU /Ofilename.ext\r\n\r\n By default, all output is sent to the console.\r\n\r\n 5.5 CONVERSION INFORMATION FOR ssignal() AND gsignal()\r\n ------------------------------------------------------\r\n\r\n Note: The C library and SIGNAL.H no longer support the ssignal()\r\n and gsignal() functions.\r\n\r\n ssignal() and gsignal() were from the old UNIX System III\r\n days. The ANSI standard no longer supports them nor does the\r\n current UNIX System V Interface Definition specification. To\r\n ease portation problems for people moving older code to Turbo\r\n C, we supply the source for the functions that came with TC\r\n 1.0 and TC 1.5. Also, the following discussion describes how\r\n code can be converted to do the same sort of things that\r\n ssignal() and gsignal() do without actually using them.\r\n\r\n NOTE: The constants defined in SIGNAL.H for SIG_IGN and\r\n SIG_DFL are different from the constants that were in\r\n TC 1.0 and TC 1.5.\r\n\r\n By using a globally declared array of function pointers, you\r\n can simulate the actions of ssignal() and gsignal() by using\r\n the following macros. Notice how the global table entry [0] is\r\n used as a temporary variable in the ssignal macro allowing the\r\n macro to swap the values and still return the original one.\r\n\r\n int (*_sigTable[16]) =\r\n {\r\n SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN,\r\n SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN,\r\n SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN,\r\n SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN, SIG_IGN,\r\n };\r\n\r\n #define ssignal(num, action) \\\r\n ( \\\r\n (((num) < 1) || ((num) > 15)) ? SIG_DFL : \\\r\n ( \\\r\n (_sigTable[0] = _sigTable[(num)]), /* List of actions */ \\\r\n _sigTable[(num)] = (action), /* The last expression */ \\\r\n _sigTable[0] /* is the return value */ \\\r\n ) \\\r\n ) \\\r\n\r\n #define gsignal(num) \\\r\n ( \\\r\n (((num) < 1) || ((num) > 15)) ? 0 : \\\r\n ( \\\r\n (_sigTable[(num)] == SIG_IGN) ? 1 : \\\r\n ( \\\r\n (_sigTable[(num)] == SIG_DFL) ? 0 : (*_sigTable[(num)])() \\\r\n ) \\\r\n ) \\\r\n ) \\\r\n\r\n\r\n 6. NOTES FOR TURBO PROLOG USERS\r\n--------------------------------\r\n\r\n o If you are linking C code with programs generated by Turbo\r\n Prolog 2.0, use the file INIT.OBJ provided on the\r\n EXAMPLES/BGI/MISC disk of the Turbo C 2.0 package instead of\r\n the file provided with Turbo Prolog 2.0. There have been some\r\n changes made in Turbo C 2.0 that require the use of this new file.\r\n\r\n o If your C code uses floating point math and you link with the\r\n emulator library, Prolog will not automatically detect a math\r\n coprocessor chip. If you want to force the program to use the\r\n coprocessor, link it with FP87.LIB instead of EMU.LIB.\r\n\r\n\r\n 7.
