NORTON pcANYWHERE AND WINDOWS 3.0\r\n =====================================\r\n \r\n Novell NetWare\r\n --------------\r\n Windows 3.0 users may experience problems with NetWare IPX\r\n connections due to a problem in the driver supplied with\r\n Windows 3.0. You can obtain a new driver (VPIX.386) from\r\n your Microsoft or Novell representative.\r\n \r\n Data Rates\r\n ----------\r\n Serial connections under Windows 3.0 have been found to be\r\n most stable at data rates below 19.2K bps. If a connection\r\n of 19.2K bps or higher is required while running Windows 3.0\r\n we recommended that the Host TSR be in memory.\r\n \r\n COM Ports\r\n ---------\r\n In Windows 3.0 environments, the Host's COM port cannot be\r\n shared. For example, if you have the Host TSR in memory, no\r\n calls out can be made from this machine without first\r\n unloading the Host DOS TSR.\r\n \r\n \r\n 2. GENERAL INFORMATION\r\n =======================\r\n \r\n Naming Your Computer\r\n -------------------------\r\n The following characters are not valid characters for use in\r\n your COMPUTER NAME. This is to insure that the name you\r\n choose for your computer is acceptable to your network\r\n environment.\r\n \r\n \\ / : ; , * ? . \" < > = + | [ } _ '\r\n \r\n \r\n Installing the Host\r\n -------------------\r\n If you did not install the Windows or Full-screen DOS Host\r\n when you installed pcANYWHERE, you can do so without having\r\n to reinstall the entire program.\r\n \r\n To install the Host:\r\n 1. Double-click the Host Install icon in the pcANYWHERE group\r\n window.\r\n 2. Check the \"Allow this computer to be controlled from\r\n another computer\" checkbox to allow your computer to act\r\n as a Host.\r\n 3. Check the \"Allow remote users to run full screen DOS\r\n Applications\" checkbox to run the DOS TSR. The DOS TSR\r\n allows remote users to exit from Windows to DOS and to run\r\n full screen DOS Applications.\r\n 4. Click OK.\r\n 5. Click Exit to DOS.\r\n 6. Reboot your computer.\r\n \r\n Uninstalling the Host\r\n ---------------------\r\n You should uninstall the Host when you need to make changes\r\n to your computer's display, keyboard or mouse. See \"Changing\r\n Hardware Drivers\" later in this document for more\r\n information.\r\n \r\n To uninstall the Host:\r\n 1. Double-click the Host Install icon in the pcANYWHERE group\r\n window.\r\n 2. Uncheck the \"Allow this computer to be controlled from\r\n another computer\" checkbox.\r\n 3. Click OK.\r\n 4. Click Restart Windows.\r\n \r\n Changing Host Options\r\n ---------------------\r\n If the Host is loaded (that is, the DOS TSR is in memory or\r\n the Windows Host is minimized), any changes made in the\r\n Configure Host Operations dialog box or the Be a Host dialog\r\n box will not take effect until the Host is canceled and\r\n restarted.\r\n \r\n Loading Mouse Drivers\r\n ---------------------\r\n The pcANYWHERE install program will try to locate the Host\r\n TSR line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file after any mouse drivers.\r\n If you add mouse drivers to your AUTOEXEC.BAT, be sure to add\r\n them before the Host TSR line.\r\n \r\n Starting the Gateway and Host TSRs\r\n ----------------------------------\r\n The Gateway and Host TSRs are DOS programs, and as such must\r\n be started before you start Windows. Attempting to start them\r\n after you have started Windows is unsupported.\r\n \r\n Norton Desktop for Windows\r\n --------------------------\r\n If you install while using Norton Desktop for Windows as your\r\n Windows shell, then switch to Program Manager as the shell,\r\n you will need to set up a group box for pcANYWHERE. Please\r\n refer to your Windows manual for information on setting up\r\n group and items for Program Manager.\r\n \r\n pcANYWHERE and CTL3D.DLL\r\n -------------------------\r\n pcANYWHERE supplies a copy of a DLL called CTL3D. This DLL is\r\n placed in your WINDOWS\\SYSTEM directory. This DLL is supplied\r\n by Microsoft with many applications. If you install other\r\n applications after installing pcANYWHERE and experience a\r\n loss of 3D effect, your new applications may have overwritten\r\n our version of CTL3D with an older one. To fix this you can\r\n copy this DLL from your pcANYWHERE distribution diskettes to\r\n the SYSTEM directory.\r\n \r\n Online Terminal Mode\r\n --------------------\r\n The Edit menu option in the 'Online Terminal' has no 'copy'\r\n command. This is because any information selected in the\r\n terminal is automatically placed in the copy buffer.\r\n \r\n Mouse Clicks\r\n ------------\r\n Due to communications delays, you may need to alter the\r\n 'double click' speed for your mouse. By lowering the delay\r\n rate, Windows will respond better to double clicking during a\r\n connection. For more information on changing the mouse\r\n settings, see your Windows User's Guide.\r\n \r\n \r\n 3. CHANGING HARDWARE DRIVERS\r\n =============================\r\n \r\n Whenever you install a new monitor, keyboard or mouse, or\r\n change display resolution, you generally must also run\r\n software that comes with the device. This software changes\r\n entries in your SYSTEM.INI file. After installing pcANYWHERE,\r\n care must be taken not to change entries in your SYSTEM.INI\r\n file without uninstalling pcANYWHERE first. pcANYWHERE relies\r\n on the settings it places in this file. Modifications may\r\n effect the program execution. For more information, see\r\n \"Installing the Host\" and \"Uninstalling the Host\" earlier in\r\n this document.\r\n \r\n For example, programs that let you change screen resolution\r\n for your display adapter actually change the display driver\r\n in your SYSTEM.INI file. This overwrites information needed\r\n by pcANYWHERE.\r\n \r\n \r\n 4. PHYSICAL/LOGICAL FONTS\r\n ==========================\r\n \r\n pcANYWHERE provides the ability to change how fonts are used\r\n during a connection. pcANYWHERE users can change the\r\n 'logicalfonts' section in the WINDOWS\\PCAW.INI file to select\r\n one of two modes, LOGICAL or PHYSICAL fonts. Users can\r\n experiment with the setting to effect initial connection\r\n speed and the general look of some applications run remotely.\r\n The default setting has been found to be appropriate for most\r\n environments.\r\n \r\n [font]\r\n logicalfonts=<number>\r\n \r\n If this section is not included in the PCAW.INI file,\r\n pcANYWHERE defaults to logicalfonts=0.\r\n \r\n number meaning\r\n ------ -------\r\n 0 pcANYWHERE Host sends extra data to the Remote for\r\n each character displayed in order for the character\r\n to appear correctly on the Remote's screen. While\r\n this setting gives you the best representation of\r\n the Host's screen, pcANYWHERE has to send more data\r\n which may cause your pcANYWHERE session to slow\r\n down slightly. You should use this setting for the\r\n following situations:\r\n\r\n * The Remote does not have the same fonts\r\n installed at the Host.\r\n * Connecting to a 4.5x Host. pcANYWHERE 4.5\r\n always sends physical font information. If you\r\n connect to a pcANYWHERE 4.5x Host with\r\n logicalfonts=1, Windows text will not appear\r\n correctly on the Remote's screen.\r\n * Connecting to a VGA Host with an EGA Remote.\r\n Text may not appear correctly with\r\n logicalfonts=1. While in a DOS Window,\r\n horizontal lines may appear unless\r\n logicalfonts=0.\r\n \r\n 1 Logical font information instructs pcANYWHERE to\r\n send the name of the fonts in use by the Host\r\n system. If the Remote has the same font,\r\n pcANYWHERE uses it to display the hosts screen as\r\n accurately as possible. If the Remote system does\r\n not have the same font, the Windows environment\r\n selects the closest matching font available. This\r\n will improve text speed slightly at the risk of\r\n getting incorrect font data on your screen.\r\n \r\n \r\n 5. PRINTING\r\n ============\r\n \r\n Printing From the Host\r\n ----------------------\r\n In order to print from the Host, the port must be changed on\r\n the Host computer to LPT1.DOS in the Windows Control Panel.\r\n Choose the Printer icon, click the Connect button, then\r\n select the port.\r\n \r\n Printing with the Remote Only Setting\r\n -------------------------------------\r\n If printing is set up for Remote Only, pcANYWHERE will start\r\n printing when the Remote computer brings up the Online Menu\r\n or ends the session.\r\n \r\n \r\n 6. pcANYWHERE 4.5\r\n ==================\r\n \r\n Configuration Files\r\n -------------------\r\n The first-time that pcANYWHERE for Windows is run, any\r\n existing pcANYWHERE 4.5 configuration files that are in the\r\n personal directory will be automatically scanned and new\r\n pcANYWHERE for Windows 1.0 files will be built from them.\r\n This will not alter the existing 4.5 configuration files. We\r\n do recommend backing up any existing 4.5 configuration files\r\n prior to installing pcANYWHERE 1.0 as a precaution.\r\n \r\n Online Menu\r\n -----------\r\n pcANYWHERE 4.5 users should note that double clicking on the\r\n 'In Session' icon will display the Online Menu. This replaces\r\n the 'hotkey' sequence in pcANYWHERE 4.5.\r\n \r\n Uninstalling\r\n ------------\r\n Care must be taken if users want to run pcANYWHERE 4.5 and\r\n pcANYWHERE for Windows 1.0 on the same computer. Symantec\r\n recommends uninstalling one product before installing the\r\n other. This will avoid any conflicts and provide the best\r\n results.\r\n \r\n \r\n 7. DOS TSR\r\n ===========\r\n \r\n Minimizing the Host Icon\r\n ------------------------\r\n If the Host DOS TSR is loaded in memory with the -m=r switch\r\n set, the switch setting will override the 'Minimize While\r\n Waiting' checkbox in the Configure Host Operations dialog box\r\n and the Host will always be minimized while it waits for a\r\n call.\r\n \r\n File Transfer\r\n -------------\r\n pcANYWHERE for Windows 1.0 provides File Transfer\r\n capabilities in the Windows host module( Winhost.exe ). The\r\n DOS TSR provided with pcANYWHERE 1.0 still requires the\r\n Windows host for file transfer capabilities.\r\n \r\n To Set Up the Windows Host:\r\n * Run the pcANYWHERE for WINDOWS Host install and check both\r\n checkboxes (Allow this computer to be controlled from\r\n another computer and Allow remote users to run full screen\r\n DOS applications) on the first screen that comes up.\r\n Or,\r\n * Check the Auto Start Host checkbox in the Configure Host\r\n Operation dialog box.\r\n \r\n Resident Mode\r\n -------------\r\n After installing pcANYWHERE for Windows 1.0 and prior to\r\n loading the DOS TSR, you must run pcANYWHERE and set up your\r\n hardware information and Computer Name. Without doing this\r\n the DOS TSR can not properly execute.\r\n \r\n Quick Connect\r\n -------------\r\n When the DOS TSR is launched, it reads configuration settings\r\n from the Be a Host dialog box. If you change Quick Connect\r\n settings for the Host while the TSR is in memory, the\r\n message, \"TSR is busy with another device\" will appear. This\r\n is not an error condition. If you require the ability to\r\n change settings dynamically, simply remove the TSR from\r\n memory prior to launching pcANYWHERE.\r\n \r\n \r\n 8. Command Line Options\r\n ========================\r\n \r\n For WINAW.EXE\r\n -------------\r\n The Windows Host (WINAW.EXE) can have the following command\r\n line arguments:\r\n \r\n -i=<userid> User-id (only used when administrator\r\n installation used)\r\n -o=r Remote operation\r\n -o=h Host operation\r\n \r\n Operating mode:\r\n -m=d Dial\r\n -m=w Wait for a Call\r\n -m=v Voice First\r\n -m=s Run a script (for -o=r only)\r\n \r\n -n=<host_entry> Host directory entry (for -o=r and -\r\n m=d, w, v)\r\n -s=<online_serv_entry> online service directory entry (for -\r\n o=r and -m=d, w, v)\r\n -n=<script_filename> script filename (for -o=r and -m=s\r\n only)\r\n -n=<phone_number> phone number to dial for Host dial\r\n operation (for -o=h and -m=d only)\r\n -c=<hardware_setup> hardware setup for Host operation (for\r\n -o=h only)\r\n \r\n Examples:\r\n Remote operation to dial a Host (administrator install):\r\n WINAW -i=userid -o=r -m=d -n=A HOST ENTRY\r\n \r\n Host operation to wait for a call (standard install):\r\n WINAW -o=h -m=w -c=MODEM CONFIGURATION\r\n \r\n For AW5HOST.EXE\r\n ---------------\r\n The DOS TSR (AW5HOST) can have the following command line\r\n arguments:\r\n -I=<userid> User-id (only used when administrator\r\n installation used)\r\n -M=R Start the Host in resident mode. (inactive)\r\n -M=A Start the Host to accept a call at any time (in\r\n background)\r\n -M=W Start the Host to wait for a call (in\r\n foreground)\r\n -W=<path> DOS path to your Windows directory. This is not\r\n required if the -I=xxxxx is used.\r\n \r\n -P=<path> DOS path to your configuration files. This is\r\n not required if you are using a \"AW=\"\r\n environment string or if the configuration files\r\n are in the current directory.\r\n \r\n The Gateway TSR also uses the -I and -P command line\r\n arguments, with the same requirements as listed above.\r\n \r\n \r\n 9. COMMUNICATIONS DRIVERS\r\n ==========================\r\n \r\n Telebit ACS\r\n -----------\r\n You will need PDWSINF.EXE (provided by Telebit) to register\r\n as a Telebit Asynchronous Communication Server (ACS) Host\r\n when using the Host DOS TSR.\r\n \r\n You will need the Windows driver WSINF.DLL (provided by\r\n Telebit) in order to use a Telebit ACS without the DOS host\r\n TSR.\r\n \r\n Interrupt 14 drivers\r\n --------------------\r\n INT 14 drivers work with Data Rates of up to 9600 bps.\r\n \r\n \r\n 10. NETWORKS\r\n ============\r\n \r\n Novell NetWare\r\n --------------\r\n To be an IPX Host in Standard mode, Windows requires you to\r\n first load TBMI2.COM. This file is provided with Windows\r\n version 3.1; you can obtain this file from your Microsoft\r\n representative.\r\n \r\n Some older versions of pcANYWHERE for DOS recommended\r\n remarking out VIPX.386 from the SYSTEM.INI file. If you have\r\n one of these versions installed, you should remove the remark\r\n from the VIPX.386 line prior to installing pcANYWHERE 1.0.\r\n \r\n Artisoft LANtastic\r\n ------------------\r\n It is recommended that users should avoid installing\r\n pcANYWHERE 1.0 on a LANtastic Server Node. You may experience\r\n difficulty in establishing connections in this configuration.\r\n \r\n In Windows Setup, the system setting for Network should be\r\n 'Microsoft Network (or 100% compatible).'\r\n \r\n \r\n 11. WORKSTATIONS\r\n ================\r\n \r\n Installation\r\n ------------\r\n In an effort to provide an efficient installation, pcANYWHERE\r\n administrative installs do not search network drives for a\r\n previously installed version of pcANYWHERE for WINDOWS.\r\n \r\n DOS TSR\r\n -------\r\n Care should be taken when setting up your AUTOEXEC.BAT file\r\n to load the DOS host TSR. If your host is set for a network\r\n connection, be sure to place the line to load the DOS TSR\r\n AFTER your 'login' procedure.\r\n \r\n \r\n 12. REMOVING pcANYWHERE\r\n =======================\r\n If you want to remove pcANYWHERE files, it is highly\r\n recommended that you use the Remove pcANYWHERE icon to\r\n uninstall pcANYWHERE.\r\n \r\n Only the program files are removed by the uninstall program--\r\n you must remove the configuration files manually.\r\n \r\n 13. SCRIPTS\r\n ===========\r\n \r\n Commands and Variables\r\n ----------------------\r\n $DATE\r\n The format of the date returned by this variable is MM/DD/YY.\r\n \r\n $DTR\r\n This environment variable is not supported. Reading $DTR will\r\n always return a value of 0.\r\n \r\n COPY\r\n The Copy command copies only individual files. Wildcards such\r\n as * and ? are not allowed. If wildcards are used, no files\r\n are copied.\r\n \r\n DEL\r\n The Delete command deletes only individual files. Wildcards\r\n such as * and ? are not allowed. If wildcards are used, no\r\n files are deleted.\r\n \r\n DESCRIPTION\r\n The Description command is not listed in the Script manual.\r\n Refer to the Tools Reference in the pcANYWHERE Editor for\r\n information.\r\n \r\n FIND FIRST and FIND NEXT\r\n These commands will search for the specified file within the\r\n current directory, not the entire drive.\r\n \r\n INTEGER\r\n This statement defines a variable as an integer (a numeric\r\n value without a decimal portion).\r\n \r\n Example:\r\n INTEGER A\r\n (Defines A as a integer variable.)\r\n \r\n SET FILE ATTR\r\n This command sets the attributes of a file. The integer\r\n value is constructed by adding the values of the desired\r\n attributes. For example, a new attribute value of 7 sets a\r\n file as read-only, hidden, and system. A value of 0 will\r\n clear all attributes from the file.\r\n \r\n The file attributes are set as follows:\r\n \r\n Attribute Value\r\n --------- -----\r\n Read-only 1\r\n Hidden 2\r\n System file 4\r\n Volume label 8\r\n Subdirectory 16\r\n Archive bit 32\r\n \r\n Example:\r\n SET FILE ATTR \"C:\\DATA.FIL\" 1\r\n (Sets data.fil to a read-only file.)\r\n \r\n STRING\r\n This statement defines a variable which will hold a quantity\r\n of alphanumeric characters. The length of the string is\r\n defined using square brackets ([ ]).\r\n \r\n Example:\r\n STRING A[50]\r\n (Defines A as a string variable which can hold up to 50\r\n alphanumeric characters.)"
