"desc_text": "\r\n FaxWorks Windows, Release 2.50\r\n ==============================\r\n\r\n\r\nContents\r\n========\r\n\r\n * Changes and new features in this version\r\n * Upgrading from previous versions of FaxWorks\r\n * Quick-start installation (for those who don't want to read the manual!)\r\n * Font compatibility and installation information\r\n * Special notes - check this section to see if your fax hardware is special\r\n\r\n \r\nChanges for release 2.5 (NOT IN THE MANUAL)\r\n===========================================\r\n\r\n 1) The new Dial Options command in the Phonebook Options menu\r\n allows you to specify a dialing prefix (e.g. 9 plus a comma to\r\n get an outside line on your phone system), AND a dialing suffix\r\n (e.g. a calling card number or long distance account access\r\n code). For numbers dialed FROM the US (both internal and\r\n international), the calling-card support automatically replaces\r\n the leading 1 (or 011 for international) with a 0 (or 001).\r\n 2) The User Details dialog (accessed from the User... button in the\r\n FaxWorks Driver Setup dialog) allows you to change the cover sheet\r\n title (the default is \"FaxWorks Cover Sheet\"), and the cover sheet\r\n subtitle (the default is \"Sent by <your fax board name>\".\r\n 3) Full support for Rockwell 224ATF Class 1 devices has been added.\r\n 4) The new Class 1 driver supports the new DellFax firmware.\r\n 5) Many new drivers have been added (the install program now lists\r\n over 80 fax boards, modems, machines and PCs!).\r\n 6) FaxWorks now provides a DDE interface which allows DDE-capable\r\n applications to specify fax destinations via DDE commands. See\r\n the READDDE.TXT file for further information.\r\n 7) Uninstall is provided for those users wishing to remove FaxWorks\r\n from one system in order to re-install it on another. Uninstall\r\n removes all traces of FaxWorks from a system, including: WIN.INI\r\n settings, SYSTEM.INI settings, files in the Windows directory,\r\n files in the FaxWorks directory, transmitted and received fax\r\n files, phonebook files and logs. Uninstall sometimes does not\r\n complete if SHARE is loaded. If Uninstall causes messages about\r\n \"SHARE Violations\", unload Windows and then modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT\r\n file to comment out the line that starts SHARE. Then you may\r\n restart Windows and run Uninstall. Remember to restore AUTOEXEC.BAT\r\n once you have completed Uninstall.\r\n To Uninstall - run A:UNINSTALL /U where A: is the drive where the \r\n installation disk is located.\r\n 8) FaxWorks is now fully compatible with both Windows- and DOS-based data\r\n communications applications. When running a data communications\r\n application (such as Terminal, Crosstalk, Procomm, Compuserve,\r\n Prodigy, etc.), FaxWorks AUTOMATICALLY switches the modem into\r\n \"Data\" mode, waits for the data communications application to\r\n terminate (queueing any faxes to be transmitted), then resets\r\n the modem to \"Fax\" mode and carries on faxing. You don't have to\r\n \"switch off\" FaxWorks in order to run a data communications\r\n program, OR remember to \"switch on\" FaxWorks again afterwords.\r\n 9) FaxWorks now supports drag-and-drop. When the FaxWorks icon is at the\r\n bottom of the screen you can fax documents without opening the\r\n application that owns them by dragging the document files from\r\n the File Manager and dropping them onto the FaxWorks icon. FaxWorks\r\n then automatically opens the application owning the document, asks\r\n it to print it to the FaxWorks driver, and closes it after printing.\r\n\r\n\r\nUpgrading from previous versions of FaxWorks\r\n============================================\r\n\r\n If upgrading from an older version of FaxWorks, first delete Fax*.*\r\n files in the FaxWorks programs directory (normally C:\\FaxWorks), AND\r\n in the main Windows directory (normally C:\\WINDOWS), for example:\r\n\r\n\t C:\\> del c:\\FaxWorks\\fax*.*\r\n\t C:\\> del c:\\windows\\fax*.*\r\n\t C:\\> del c:\\windows\\system\\fax*.*\r\n\r\n It is recommended that you delete these files from OUTSIDE\r\n Windows (as shown above, from the DOS prompt).\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nRemoving this version of FaxWorks\r\n=================================\r\n\r\n If you wish to remove this version of FaxWorks, just install the\r\n installation diskette and run \"A:UNINSTALL /U\" from the File/Run\r\n menu of the Program Manager. This operation will sometimes conflict\r\n with DOS \"SHARE\" and so you should boot your system with SHARE\r\n disabled to uninstall FaxWorks.\r\n\r\n\r\nQuick-start Installation\r\n========================\r\n\r\n****** Do not attempt to run the FaxWorks install program if you have\r\n*NOTE* DOS FASTOPEN utility installed in your system.\r\n******\r\n\r\n 1) Load Windows, then depending on which menu/shell you're using:\r\n 2) Program Manager: Choose File/Run and type A:INSTALL\r\n File Manager: Click on the -A- drive or press Ctrl+A,\r\n then open A:\\ and run INSTALL.EXE\r\n MS-DOS Executive: Click on the -A- drive or press Ctrl+A,\r\n then run INSTALL.EXE\r\n All others: Select the A: drive as the CURRENT DRIVE, and\r\n run INSTALL.EXE \r\n (Substitute the drive containing the FaxWorks release disk, if not A:)\r\n 3) Enter the directory to install FaxWorks in, and your Windows directory\r\n 4) Select your FAX board from the list\r\n 5) Press OK and files will be copied; change disks if prompted\r\n 6) Set FaxWorks options; User Details and Directories are most important\r\n 7) To send a FAX, issue File/Print from any Windows application\r\n\r\n\r\nFont Installation\r\n=================\r\n\r\nAdobe Type Manger:\r\n------------------\r\nFaxWorks is fully compatible with Type Manager. If you have Postscript soft\r\nfonts (Type 1 or Type 3) you must have Adobe Type Manager in order to\r\nuse them with FaxWorks.\r\n\r\nBitstream FaceLift:\r\n-------------------\r\nFaxWorks is fully compatible with FaceLift. However, if you install\r\nFaxWorks AFTER FaceLift, you must run the FaceLift Control Panel, open\r\nthe Printers icon, select FaxWorks and check the \"Assign SHELL-Driver\"\r\ncheck box. Finally, make sure you use the Bitstream font names (such\r\nas Dutch and Swiss) rather than the Windows font names (e.g. Helv and\r\nTimes) when using FaceLift with FaxWorks.\r\n\r\nWindows fonts:\r\n--------------\r\nFor best results, use the Windows Control Panel to install from the\r\nMicrosoft Windows release disk(s) provided with the Windows retail package\r\nthe CGA RES and VGA RES fonts.\r\n\r\nSee your Windows user guide for details on installing fonts using the\r\nControl Panel.\r\n\r\nFontWare Drivers:\r\n-----------------\r\nThis release comes with drivers for BitStream's FontWare, versions 2.0\r\nand 3.0. To install the FontWare drivers, you must first have\r\nFontWare installed on a hard drive, then:\r\n\r\n 1) Select the A: drive and run FWINSTAL from the DOS prompt\r\n (Substitute the drive containing the FaxWorks release disk, if not A:)\r\n 2) Provide FWINSTAL with the drive & directory where FontWare is installed\r\n 3) FWINSTAL automatically installs the FontWare 2 or FontWare 3 drivers\r\n 4) Run FontWare and select FaxWorks as the current printer (with the desired\r\n orientation and resolution) from the FontWare control panel, then re-\r\n generate any fonts you have previously built for your screen or printer.\r\n This assures 3-way WYSIWYG among screen, printer and FaxWorks.\r\n\r\nZ-Soft's SoftType, & Other Font Managers:\r\n-----------------------------------------\r\nSoftType, and any other font manager that generates Windows GDI\r\nfonts, can be used to generate fonts for FaxWorks using the following\r\nresolution information.\r\n\r\n Standard Resolution, Portrait: Horizontal 204dpi; Vertical 98dpi\r\n Standard Resolution, Landscape: Horizontal 98dpi ; Vertical 204dpi\r\n Fine Resolution, Portrait: Horizontal 204dpi; Vertical 196dpi\r\n Fine Resolution, Landscape: Horizontal 196dpi; Vertical 204dpi\r\n\r\nIncompatible Font Managers:\r\n---------------------------\r\nA number of font managers available for Windows operate by providing\r\nenhanced printer drivers for a certain number of common printers,\r\nsuch as the Hewlett Packard LaserJet series. Since this type of font\r\nmanager replaces the existing printer driver it will not provide font\r\nsupport for FaxWorks. Examples of this type of product are Publishers\r\nPowerpack from Atech and SuperPrint from Zenographics.\r\n\r\n -------------------------------------------------------------------\r\n See the FaxWorks User's Guide for more information on the installation \r\n and use of FaxWorks Windows, and Windows and FontWare fonts.\r\n --------------------------------------------------------------------\r\n\r\n\r\nSpecial Notes\r\n=============\r\n\r\n * The install program makes a backup copy of your WIN.INI\r\n file, named WININI.OLD.\r\n\r\n\r\nIntel Fax Boards\r\n----------------\r\nIf using an Intel fax board (SatisFAXtion or Connection CoProcessor),\r\nyou will occasionally get a CAS error message from FaxWorks while in\r\nWindows. A Connection CoProcessor will indicate \"CAS\r\nFindFirst/FindNext failed\" and a SatisFAXtion will indicate \"CAS\r\nGetDate or GetTime failed\".\r\n\r\nThese messages are the result of a queue file bug in the Intel\r\nsoftware. The problem can be solved by deleting the ENTIRE queue\r\nsubdirectory within the Intel software directory. The default\r\ndirectory name for the Connection CoProcessor is C:\\CONNECT\\QUEUE and\r\nfor SatisFAXtion is C:\\FAX\\QUEUE. Once all files (*.*) have been\r\ndeleted from this directory, you MUST reboot your computer so that\r\nthe Intel software can create new, empty queues. The above message\r\nwill then not be displayed any longer by FaxWorks.\r\n\r\nIMPORTANT: Before deleting all files in the queue directory, make\r\nsure that you have no pending fax transmissions (unsent documents)\r\nand that all received documents and files have been viewed, printed\r\nor saved. Deleting the queue directory files will result in loss of\r\nany unsent transmissions or unread receives.\r\n\r\nIntel SatisFAXtion\r\n------------------\r\nThere are no other special requirements for the Intel SatisFAXtion\r\nboard except that the Communicating Application Specification Manager\r\n(CASMGR.EXE - see Intel documentation for details) must be loaded and\r\nrunning BEFORE you enter Windows and generate faxes with FaxWorks.\r\n\r\nSince the Intel install program sets up your system so that CASMGR is\r\nalways loaded and running, you shouldn't have to change anything. If,\r\nhowever, you get a message from FaxWorks complaining that the CAS\r\nManager is not loaded, you might have to adjust your AUTOEXEC.BAT\r\nfile so that it loads the CASMGR before running Windows.\r\n\r\nIntel Connection CoProcessor\r\n----------------------------\r\nThe Intel Connection CoProcessor Application Manager version 1.12 or\r\nnewer (CCAM.EXE - see Intel documentation for details) must be loaded\r\nand running BEFORE you enter Windows and generate faxes with FaxWorks.\r\n\r\nSince the Intel install program sets up your system so that CCAM is\r\nalways loaded and running, you shouldn't have to change anything. If,\r\nhowever, you get a message from FaxWorks complaining that CCAM is not\r\nloaded, you might have to adjust your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that it\r\nloads CCAM before running Windows.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the above,\r\n\r\n 1) If you are using a 386-based PS/2 (MCA) machine, you need to get\r\n an update to the CONNECT.SYS driver from Intel.\r\n\r\n 2) If you are using CCAM version 1.11 or previous, you need to get an\r\n update to a newer version from Intel. While waiting for the upgrade,\r\n copy the CCAMMLTI.COM program from this disk into your CONNECT\r\n directory and add it to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.\r\n\r\n To do this, first check CCAM's version number. Make sure you are\r\n at a DOS prompt, and then change to the directory where you\r\n installed the Intel software (normally C:\\CONNECT) and run CCAM.\r\n A message similar to the following will be displayed:\r\n\r\n Connection CoProcessor Applications Manager (CCAM)\r\n Version x.xx\r\n\r\n If the version number displayed is 1.11 or LESS, do the following\r\n when you are at a DOS prompt (assuming the FaxWorks program disk is\r\n in A: and the Intel software is installed in C:\\CONNECT;\r\n substitute your drive/directories if different):\r\n\r\n COPY A:CCAMMLTI.COM C:\\CONNECT\r\n\r\n Once CCAMMLTI.COM is copied, you need to add it to your AUTOEXEC.BAT\r\n file. To do this, you must first load AUTOEXEC.BAT into an\r\n editor (EDLIN or some other DOS editor will do, so will NOTEPAD\r\n in Windows) and find the line which says:\r\n\r\n C:\\CONNECT\\CCAM C:\\CONNECT\\CCAM.CFG\r\n\r\n and add IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING that line, the line:\r\n\r\n C:\\CONNECT\\CCAMMLTI\r\n\r\n Save the modified AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot your computer. Make\r\n sure that following the CCAM signon you see a message similar to:\r\n\r\n CCAM-MULTI: Enable CCAM Multitasking\r\n ...\r\n CCAM is running multitasking\r\n xxx bytes used\r\n\r\n\r\nBrooktrout Fax-Mail\r\n-------------------\r\n 1) Do not load the background program (RESXMIT) in high memory. \r\n FaxWorks requires RESXMIT to be loaded low.\r\n\r\n\r\nJT-FAX 9600 (Hayes, Quadram or Asher)\r\n-------------------------------------\r\n 1) FaxWorks does NOT support the JT-FAX 4800 products.\r\n \r\n 2) Do not run the JT-FAX FAX program when the background \r\n program (SCH) is installed. Both of these programs communicate \r\n with the JT-FAX board. If both programs are resident conflicts \r\n will arise.\r\n\r\n 3) Conflicts with expanded memory managers (QEMM, 386Max etc): If\r\n you are using an expanded memory manager be sure to exclude the area\r\n of memory used by the JTFAX board from use by the memory manager.\r\n The PC communicates with the JTFAX board thru the use of a shared \r\n memory buffer. This buffer is 2048 bytes in length and has a default\r\n base address of CC00:0. The actual base address may be different, check\r\n the switch settings on the JTFAX board.\r\n \r\n Failure to exclude the JTFAX memory buffer from the memory manager\r\n will allow the memory manager to use the JTFAX buffer for various\r\n memory management functions. If this situation arises, FaxWorks will\r\n not be able to send or receive fax messages. \r\n\r\nHewlett Packard Laser Jet Fax\r\n-----------------------------\r\n 1) Install the software provided by Hewlett Packard before\r\n attempting to install or use FaxWorks.\r\n\r\n 2) Avoid attempting to send a FAX and print a document at the same\r\n time. Currently there is no mechanism to avoid this problem,\r\n exercise caution.\r\n\r\n 3) When sending particularly dense or complex FAX pages, the\r\n system may appear to 'freeze' or become very slow. This is a\r\n temporary situation, the system will recover when the offending page\r\n has been transferred to the Laser Jet Fax.\r\n\r\n\r\nGeneral notes for fax devices that use the Background Scheduler\r\n---------------------------------------------------------------\r\nThe background scheduler is used by the following fax\r\nproducts: JTFAX 9600, Sierra SendFax based devices, HP Laser Jet Fax,\r\nClass 1, and Class 2 fax devices.\r\n\r\nThe background scheduler is responsible for sending and receiving (if\r\nyour hardware is capable of receiving) faxes in the 'background'. \r\nThe scheduler is implemented as a DOS Terminate but Stay Resident (TSR)\r\nprogram. As a TSR you must load or unload the scheduler while at the DOS\r\nprompt and not while in Windows.\r\n\r\nTo remove the scheduler from memory (unload) type the following\r\ncommand from the DOS prompt (without the quotes): \"SCH /S\".\r\n\r\nGeneral notes for serial FAX devices\r\n------------------------------------\r\nIf your FAX device is an external device that connects to the computer\r\nvia a serial port, or it is an internal board that can be configured\r\nto use COM1 thru COM4, it is a serial device. It is important to\r\nnote that both COM1 and COM3 share interrupt channel 4 and that COM2 \r\nand COM4 share interrupt channel 3. This means that you should not\r\nconfigure you FAX device to use the same interrupt channel as an\r\nother active serial device. For example, if you have a serial mouse \r\non COM1, do not configure your FAX device to use COM3.\r\n\r\n\r\nUS Robotics/Touchbase WorldPort 24/96\r\n-------------------------------------\r\n 1) FaxWorks requires WorldPort firmware version 2.7 or greater. To\r\n determine the version of firmware in your modem run the Windows\r\n Terminal program, or some other communications software, and type the \r\n command \"ATI3\" and press the Enter key. The modem will respond with \r\n an identification string, eg.\r\n\r\n\t\t\tWORLDPORT2496USa2.6\r\n\r\n The end of the string contains the version number. If you have\r\n version 2.6 or earlier, please contact TouchBase and obtain an\r\n upgrade. As of June '91, the current firmware version is 3.2."
