"desc_text": "This document contains information that does not currently appear in \r\nthe manual.\r\n\r\n------------------------------ General Info -------------------------------\r\n\r\nRunning both the DOS and Windows versions of cc:Mail:\r\n It is NOT a good idea to have both the DOS and Windows versions\r\n of cc:Mail running at the same time. If you modify the data of \r\n your mail account (e.g. delete messages from the Inbox) using one\r\n program, you will easily confuse the other instance of cc:Mail.\r\n If you want to run the DOS version of cc:Mail, close the Windows\r\n version first, and vise-versa.\r\n\r\n\r\ncc:Mail for Windows viewer filters:\r\n cc:Mail for Windows provides a facility for viewing the contents of\r\n files attached to messages in their original format. For example,\r\n if you receive the Windows chess.bmp file, you can see that image by\r\n double-clicking on that item in the Message Item list.\r\n\r\n The special routines which enable cc:Mail to display different file \r\n formats are contained in filters. If you look in the cc:Mail for \r\n Windows program directory, you will find files with the \".FLT\" \r\n extension. These are the cc:Mail file viewing filters. For example, \r\n the file \"BMP.FLT\" is the filter used when viewing Windows bitmap files.\r\n\r\n We will be providing users with additional filters for other file \r\n formats as they become available.\r\n\r\n * Note: If you have a file attachment that you wish to view, and \r\n cc:Mail doesn't have the filter for that particular format, you may \r\n be able to <SHIFT>-double-click on it to launch an application that \r\n does support the file format. cc:Mail indicates that such an \r\n application is available by using the icon that represents the \r\n application on Window's Program Manager desktop, for the item in the \r\n cc:Mail Message Item list.\r\n\r\n\r\nccBackup\r\n A new small utility program called ccBackup has been written to\r\n make it easier to backup a cc:Mail database. The program and it's\r\n documentation are included on this diskette in the CCBACKUP\r\n subdirectory. Note that the ccBackup program is NOT installed\r\n automatically by the installation program.\r\n\r\n\r\nLaunching MS-DOS or Windows Versions of cc:Mail from Windows Notify\r\n Windows Notify supports launching either cc:Mail for MS-DOS or\r\n cc:Mail for Windows. When cc:Mail for Windows is installed, it\r\n automatically configures Windows Notify to launch cc:Mail for\r\n Windows. It does this by setting the value assigned to the\r\n \"Notify\" keyword in the [cc:Mail] section of the WIN.INI file\r\n to 1 (\"Notify=1\"). If you install cc:Mail for Windows and\r\n still want Windows Notify to launch cc:Mail for MS-DOS, change\r\n WIN.INI so that the value assigned to the Notify keyword is 0\r\n (\"Notify=0\").\r\n\r\n\r\nTechnical MAIL.PIF Issues\r\n To launch DOS Mail from Notify you MUST use a .PIF file. \r\n Windows Notify executes MAIL.PIF, which in turn executes MAIL.EXE. \r\n The order that Windows 3.0 will normally search for MAIL.PIF and \r\n MAIL.EXE is 1) in the directory where WNOTIFY.EXE is located, 2) in \r\n the WINDOWS directory, and 3) in the directories named in your \r\n DOS PATH.\r\n\r\n If Windows Notify is located on a network and individual users\r\n need to customize the MAIL.PIF file, the copy of MAIL.PIF in\r\n the same directory as WNOTIFY.EXE should be deleted. Then each\r\n user can place a customized MAIL.PIF in their WINDOWS directory\r\n and it will be used.\r\n\r\n If MAIL.PIF is modified to include an explicit path in the\r\n \"Program Filename\" field (e.g. \"M:\\CCMAIL\\MAIL.EXE\"), Windows\r\n will use that path to find MAIL.EXE rather than using the\r\n algorithm described above. However, MAIL.EXE is normally in\r\n the same directory as WNOTIFY.EXE, so this should not be\r\n necessary.\r\n\r\n The directory that MAIL.EXE will use as its default directory\r\n for reading and writing files is specified in the \"Start-up\r\n Directory\" field of MAIL.PIF (\"C:\\\" in the distributed\r\n MAIL.PIF). If this field is blank, the start-up directory is\r\n the directory Windows Notify was executed from, which is\r\n generally incorrect because MAIL.EXE requires the user to have\r\n file creation and write privileges in the start-up directory.\r\n\r\n The \"Optional Parameters\" field in MAIL.PIF must be left blank.\r\n\r\nAutomatic Directory Exchange\r\n If you are going to be using Automatic Directory Exchange, please\r\n read the README.TXT file which is distributed with that product for\r\n additional issues which may affect you.\r\n\r\n\r\nInstallation on '486 Workstations\r\n On some '486 workstations, the installation program may indicate a\r\n spurious error (\"Invalid Drive Letter or Drive Not Ready. Press\r\n ESC\") when you select \"Start Installation\". If this occurs, press\r\n Esc (as indicated) to dismiss the error, and the installation will\r\n proceed correctly.\r\n\r\n\r\n\"Bank-shot\" Routing\r\n There is a method to bypass the 200 name limit on mailing lists\r\n when using multiple post offices, known as \"bank-shot routing.\"\r\n More information is available from the new cc:Mail Technical\r\n Support bulletin board system.\r\n\r\n---------------------------------- Tips -----------------------------------\r\n\r\ncc:Mail and other applications:\r\n\r\n When launching applications from within cc:Mail for Windows, some do not \r\n allow a second copy (multiple instances) of the program to be run. In \r\n this case, the currently running application normally posts a message \r\n box notifing the user of this condition. For example, Microsoft Word \r\n v1.1 displays a message box which reads: \"Microsoft Word - \r\n Word is already running\". These messages obviously vary from \r\n application to application. You also may find that some \r\n applications do not post any message box but instead restore the \r\n previous instance of the running application, ala cc:Mail. In this \r\n case, the application which was launched by cc:Mail has exited even \r\n though you are presented with the application (first instance), just as \r\n if you switched tasks to the other application. As a rule of thumb, \r\n make sure there are no other instances of the attachment application \r\n running prior to running it from within cc:Mail, unless you know it runs \r\n multiple instances.\r\n\r\n When an application is launched from cc:Mail, it should be closed before \r\n you come back to work in cc:Mail. If you try to \"re-open\" cc:Mail, you \r\n are presented with a message box asking if you want to:\r\n\r\n\t1. Resume editing the attachment (YES)\r\n\t2. Go on to another application, besides cc:Mail (NO)\r\n\t3. Close the attachment application and return to cc:Mail (Cancel)\r\n\r\n In the case of #3 (Cancel), if the associataed application is a DOS \r\n application, you'll want to make sure that you have \"Allow Close when \r\n Active\" turned on in the program's information file (PIF). This allows \r\n you to cancel the application at this point and return to cc:Mail \r\n without attaching the file. However, the easier way of cancelling an \r\n attachment would be to simply exit the application and cancel when \r\n prompted for a file prefix.\r\n\r\n\r\nClipboard folders and private mailing lists:\r\n\tYou may notice, if you cut and paste messages or addresses,\r\n\tthat special folders and/or mailing lists named \"clipboard\"\r\n\tappear in the Folder List and/or the Mailing List windows.\r\n\tThese contain the results of a cut or copy operation of messages\r\n\tor addresses. The contents of a \"clipboard\" will be copied into \r\n\ta destination list when you perform the paste operation.\r\n\r\n\tThe user is allowed to perform a limit number of actions on these\r\n\tlists. (e.g. while you are not allowed to open a clipboard list, \r\n\tyou may delete it.)"
