Modem Script Return Codes and External Retries\r\n---------------------------------------------------\r\nProcessing of certain return codes from modem script files differs from \r\nversions of Microsoft Mail prior to version 3.2. When the Call script returns \r\na result code of NoCarrier (4), NoDialTone (6), Busy (7), or NoAnswer (8), \r\nthe External program now increases the retries count on all mail that was \r\nqueued to be sent. If the retry count exceeds the number for the routing, the \r\nmail is returned to the sender. \r\n\r\nIf a script you customized for a previous version of Mail is to be used with \r\nthe External Mail program version 3.2, check to see if the retry count on \r\nscript return codes 4, 6, 7, and 8 was used. If the script was designed so \r\nthat return code was not expected to increase the retries count, recompile \r\nthe script using return code 9--External does not increase the retry count if \r\nencounters a script return code 9.\r\n\r\nFor more information about writing script files, see Appendix E, \"Script \r\nFiles,\" in the Microsoft Mail Administrator's Guide.\r\n\r\nB.5. Multiple Modem Messages in a Script Response Buffer\r\n--------------------------------------------------------\r\nWhen the External Mail program receives a message from a connected modem, \r\nmultiple messages can be put into the response buffer. If you are writing a \r\ncustom script or using a script from the Supplementary Scripts disk that was \r\nwritten for modems manufactured outside of North America, use the ISIN \r\noperator to check the response buffer. This is especially important for \r\nincoming call messages.\r\n\r\nChange the search for response return codes from:\r\n if (response = \"2^M\") \r\nto:\r\n if (\"2^M\" isin response)\r\n\r\nFor more information about writing script files, see Appendix E, \"Script \r\nFiles,\" in the Microsoft Mail Administrator's Guide.\r\n\r\nB.6. Setting up the Eicon Gateway Software\r\n------------------------------------------\r\nFor information about installing the Eicon Gateway software, see the Eicon \r\ndocumentation and Appendix F, \"X.25 Settings for Mail,\" in the Microsoft Mail \r\nAdministrator's Guide. Your Eicon setup must match the configuration of the \r\nline leased from your X.25 carrier. Values vary by carrier and installation--\r\nconfirm all values set by the ECCFG program with your carrier.\r\n\r\nThe Microsoft Mail Administrator's Guide provides information about \r\nparameters that are critical when setting up the Eicon board and software. \r\nFor the configuration option Number Of TVCs, a value of 004 is suggested. The \r\ncorrect value depends on the line installed--a different value could be \r\nappropriate for your configuration.\r\n\r\nB.7. Moving a User Already Defined in the Destination Postoffice Address List\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\r\nYou can use the Move User utility to move locally defined users between \r\npostoffices. If you attempt to move User X from Postoffice A to Postoffice B, \r\nand there is already an external address for User X in Postoffice B's \r\nPostoffice Address List (POL), you are asked for another alias for user X \r\nbefore you can move the user.\r\n\r\nTo avoid this situation, be sure that the external address for a user is \r\ndeleted on the destination postoffice before you move the user.\r\n\r\nB.8. Import Utility Example Correction \r\n--------------------------------------\r\nOn page 322 in the Microsoft Mail Administrator's Guide, in the section \r\n\"Examples of Running Import,\" the third example is incorrect.\r\n\r\nThe example should be: \r\n\r\nimport admin -ppassword -gsnads -x -fh:\\snads.txt\r\n\r\nB.9. Unencrypted Password Option No Longer Required for Novell\r\n--------------------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you are running Microsoft Mail on a Novell network, and you are upgrading \r\nyour postoffice from a version of Microsoft Mail prior to 3.0, remove the SET \r\nUNENCRIPTED PASSWORDS=ON option from the AUTOEXEC.NCF files. This setting was \r\npreviously required to properly configure dynamic drives for the External \r\nMail program.\r\n\r\nB.10. MS-DOS External and LAN MAN opportunistic locking\r\n-------------------------------------------------------\r\nIf External is running on a MS-DOS LAN MAN workstation with opportunistic \r\nlocks enabled, External may hang the workstation when trying to recover from \r\ncritical errors. When this occurs, External stops delivering mail and the \r\nworkstation must be restarted. \r\n\r\nTo avoid manually restarting the workstation, take one of these two \r\npreventative measures:\r\n\r\n1. In your LANMAN.INI file Workstation Section [workstation] turn off \r\nopportunistic locking of files by turning off bit 0 in the wrkheuristics \r\nentry. See appendix B of the Microsoft LAN Manager Administrator's Reference.\r\n\r\n2. Use the External option RebootOnCE to automatically restart the \r\nworkstation on critical errors. See section C.2 in this document for more \r\ndetails.\r\n\r\nC. EXTERNAL MAIL PROGRAM FEATURES NOT DESCRIBED IN THE ADMINISTRATORS GUIDE\r\n===========================================================================\r\n\r\nThis section covers the following topics:\r\n\r\n 1. Generic script file included with the Server\r\n 2. Automatically rebooting MS-DOS External on critical errors\r\n 3. Specifying X.25 facilities and user data\r\n\r\n\r\nC.1. Generic Script File Included with the Server\r\n-----------------------------------------------------\r\nA new generic script file for Hayes-compatible modems is included with the \r\nMicrosoft Mail for PC Networks MS-DOS server version 3.2. The script file, \r\nUSGNERIC.MDM, is designed to operate with any modem compatible with the Hayes \r\nAT command set. The generic script does not set the baud rate--the baud rate \r\nis set using the Config Serial Baud-rate command in the Administrator \r\nprogram.\r\n\r\nThe generic script is installed in the GLB directory of the postoffice \r\ndirectory you specify when running the Setup program (SETUP.EXE). To use this \r\nscript, specify the option CommScript=USGNERIC in the External Mail program. \r\nFor more information about specifying scripts in the External Mail program, \r\nsee Chapter 12, \"Setting Up the External Mail Program,\" in the Microsoft Mail \r\nAdministrator's Guide.\r\n\r\nC.2. Automatically Rebooting MS-DOS External on Critical Errors\r\n---------------------------------------------------------------\r\nA critical error is generated by MS-DOS when an unrecoverable situation \r\noccurs in an application. When this happens, the message \"Abort, Retry, \r\nFail?\" is displayed--to continue using the application, the user must \r\nrespond. If, when MS-DOS External is running, a network connection fails due \r\nto a problem at the file server, this type of critical error occurs. The MS-\r\nDOS External Mail program traps the error and stops moving mail on the failed \r\nconnection, but continues to move mail on other connections. External tries \r\nto re-establish the failed connection and MS-DOS successfully reconnects if \r\nthe condition that caused the critical error has been corrected.\r\n\r\nIn some environments, network redirectors become unstable following a \r\ncritical error. There is a possibility that the MS-DOS External Mail program \r\nwill not be able to re-establish the postoffice connection and will hang. If \r\nthis occurs, the computer on which the External Mail program is running must \r\nbe rebooted. Instead of manually rebooting the computer, you can specify an \r\nExternal Mail program option to reboot automatically. \r\n\r\nTo specify automatic rebooting when critical errors occur, specify RebootOnCE \r\nin the EXTERNAL.INI file. For example:\r\n\r\n[External]\r\nRebootOnCE\r\n\r\nC.3. Specifying X.25 Facilities and User Data\r\n---------------------------------------------\r\nThis section describes how to specify X.25 facilities and user data for mail \r\nexchanged with other postoffices or mail received from Remote client users \r\nthrough an X.25 public carrier. To set up X.25 communications for Microsoft \r\nMail, see Appendix F, \"X.25 Settings for Mail,\" in the Microsoft Mail \r\nAdministrator's Guide.\r\n\r\nBy adding the following entries to an External .INI file, you can indicate \r\nwhich facilities to initiate for an X.25 communication session. For \r\ninformation about creating an External .INI file, see Chapter 12, \"Setting Up \r\nthe External Program,\" in the Microsoft Mail Administrator's Guide.\r\n\r\nYou can specify one or more of these options to apply to all instances or for \r\na specific instance. You can also specify the call user options for each \r\npostoffice being called. \r\n\r\nIf you specify the same option as a shared instance and as a specific \r\ninstance, External only initiates the specific instance. If, for call user \r\ndata, you specify only a specific postoffice, the last call user data entry \r\nin the shared or specific instance is used. If you enter conflicting options \r\nor if options are missing, the External program uses the option it finds \r\nlast. \r\n\r\nX25CallFacilities option\r\n\r\n Syntax: X25CallFacilities=[network/postoffice:]$value[$value]...\r\n\r\n Use X25CallFacilities to specify which X25 call facility to initiate. \r\n For a list of call facility codes, see your X.25 manual.\r\n\r\n Specify the facility code in hexadecimal notation. Each hexadecimal value \r\n must be prefixed by a dollar sign ($) and be a value from 0 to 9 and A to \r\n F. You can specify up to 128 hexadecimal values. The maximum length cannot \r\n exceed 401 characters.\r\n\r\n For example, to reverse the charges when communicating with the SERVER1 \r\n postoffice on LAN1, where the facility code is hexadecimal 01 and its \r\n parameter is hexadecimal 01, you would specify \r\n X25CallFacilities=LAN1/SERVER1:$01$01\r\n\r\n\r\nX25CallUserData option \r\n\r\n Syntax: X25CallUserData=[network/postoffice:]$value[$value]...\r\n\r\n Use X25CallUserData to specify the information to be validated by \r\n External at the destination postoffice, or for call routing. For a list of \r\n valid entries for call user data, see your X.25 manual.\r\n\r\n Specify the data in hexadecimal. Each hexadecimal value must be prefixed by \r\n a dollar sign ($) and be a value from 0 to 9 and A to F. You can specify up \r\n to 128 hexadecimal values. The maximum length cannot exceed 406 characters.\r\n\r\n You can specify this option for each postoffice if you need to. If you \r\n specify both the postoffice and the data, the data you specify will be used \r\n for validation. If you specify only the postoffice, External uses the \r\n X25CallUserData specified for the shared instance. \r\n\r\n\r\nX25ListenFacilities option \r\n\r\n Syntax: X25ListenFacilities=$value[$value]...\r\n\r\n Use X25ListenFacilities to specify which X25 listen facility to \r\n initiate in a specify External instance. For a list of listen facility \r\n codes, see your X.25 manual.\r\n\r\n Specify the facility code in hexadecimal notation. Each hexadecimal value \r\n must be prefixed by a dollar sign ($) and be a value from 0 to 9 and A to \r\n F. You can specify up to 128 hexadecimal values. The maximum length cannot \r\n exceed 384 characters.\r\n\r\n For example, if facility code is hexadecimal 01 and its parameter is \r\n hexadecimal 01, you would specify X25ListenFacilities=$01$01\r\n\r\n\r\nX25ListenUserData option\r\n\r\n Syntax: X25ListenUserData=$value[$value]...\r\n\r\n Use X25ListenUserData to specify the information that External uses to \r\n check against the incoming X.25 communication. \r\n\r\n Specify the data in hexadecimal. Each hexadecimal value must be prefixed by \r\n a dollar sign ($) and be a value from 0 to 9 and A to F. You can specify up \r\n to 128 hexadecimal values. The maximum length cannot exceed 401 characters.\r\n\r\n If this option is specified, the incoming call request packet must contain \r\n identical user data; if it does not, the call is rejected.\r\n\r\n\r\nTroubleshooting X.25 Facilities and User Data\r\n\r\nIf you use the LogVerbose option, all facility and user data is recorded in \r\nthe SESSION.LOG file.\r\n\r\nIf you do not enter the syntax of the .INI entry correctly, External stops \r\nwith the message \"Invalid option specified in .INI:
