README.TXT This file provides information on the following subjects: SHARE.EXE Setting a Gray Screen Background Printing Adjustments Envelope Printing SHARE.EXE Microsoft Profit requires that the DOS utility SHARE.EXE be running. During installation, Profit attempted to add a line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Depending on how your AUTOEXEC.BAT file is structured, it may or may not have been able to do so. You need to have the following line invoked prior to starting Windows. The easiest solution is to make sure that it is located in your AUTOEXEC.BAT prior to the line where Windows is started. Share /f:4096 /l:40 You should not have any other SHARE statements before this line or they will take priority. SETTING A GRAY SCREEN BACKGROUND You can add a line in the MSPROFIT.INI file that will turn the gray "pinstripes" in Profit to a light gray background. This is useful if you have a high resolution monitor that is prone to flickering. Put the following line in the [msprofit] section of MSPROFIT.INI: GrayBackground=1 PRINTING ADJUSTMENTS While Microsoft Profit was tested on many different printers, Profit may need to be adjusted slightly on your printer to align with preprinted Deluxe forms. In the MSPROFIT.INI file (found in your WINDOWS subdirectory) are two lines: PrintOffsetX=0 PrintOffsetY=0 These control the horizontal and vertical placement of printing on a form. To use these offsets, first verify that your printer is printing an invoice correctly on a custom Deluxe form. By increasing or decreasing the offsets by one, you move the printed region 1/32". Examples: PrintOffsetX=4 moves the printed region 4/32" right and PrintOffsetX=-4 moves it 4/32" left. PrintOffsetY=4 moves it 4/32" down, etc. At this time, the offsets only adjust the placement of invoices, quotes, refunds, and checks. Reports, billing stmts, labels and envelopes are produced by a nonadjustable report writer. ENVELOPE PRINTING Microsoft Profit detects the type of printer you have and determines the proper page layout to print envelopes. For some printers Profit may be unable to obtain enough information to print the envelope correctly. In those cases, it is possible to configure some portions of the envelope layout manually by adding settings for your printer to the MSPROFIT.INI file. If your envelopes are printing correctly, you can skip this section. The following settings are available: Setting Value/Description -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Force Portrait 1 Always print in portrait orientation. Force Landscape 2 Always print in landscape orientation. Align Left 4 Align to the left side of the paper tray. Align Right 8 Align to the right side of the paper tray. Use Envelope Feeder 16 An envelope feeder is installed and should be used. Reverse Landscape 32 Normally when a printer prints to paper in landscape orientation, the text is drawn down the page (as viewed when holding the paper in portrait landscape). This setting indicates that the printer draws up the paper when printing landscape text. To apply these settings to your printer, you need to know the name of your printer driver. This can be determined by viewing the WIN.INI file using the SysEdit program supplied with Windows. Run SysEdit by selecting 'Run...' from the File menu in Program Manager. Type SysEdit and press return and the System Edit program will be opened with your AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files displayed, each in its own window. Click on the WIN.INI window to bring it to the top and find the 'device=<some printer>' line in the [windows] section (where <some printer> is information about the default printer). For example if you have an Apple LaserWriter II NTX you may see: device=Apple LaserWriter II NTX,pscript,LPT2: The text between the commas in the 'device=' entry is your printer driver name. In the example above, 'pscript' is the printer driver. To change the way Profit configures the page for envelopes, add an entry to your MSPROFIT.INI file (found in your WINDOWS directory) by editing it with Windows Notepad or another text editor. In the [MSPROFIT] section, add a line with your printer driver as its name and its value being the settings you want changed. For example, to print envelopes on the Apple LaserWriter II NTX on the left side of the page, add the following entry: [MSPROFIT] <-- this line will already be present pscript=+4 <-- this is the new line The '+' before the value tells Profit to remember its internal settings for the printer, while leaving it out tells Profit to completely replace the internal settings with those specified in the .INI file. It is generally best to add the '+'. To print envelopes on the same printer on the left side of the paper tray (4) and in portrait orientation (1), add the two individual settings together: [MSPROFIT] pscript=+5
Late Program Changes for Simply Accounting for Windows version 1.0A
This file contains information that was not included in the Simply
Accounting for Windows manual, or that has changed since the manual
went to press. We suggest you print out this file and note all changes
in the manual.
Converting from Simply Accounting for DOS (formerly ACCPAC Bedford
Integrated Accounting):
--In Simply Accounting for DOS, the item cost could have up to three
decimal places. Costs were not rounded. In Simply Accounting for
Windows, the maximum is four decimal places, and costs are
rounded up. This may cause a difference in inventory costs when
you convert your data to Simply Accounting for Windows.
--In Simply Accounting for DOS, the default aging periods were 0 to
29 days, 30 to 59 days, and 60 to 90 days. In Simply Accounting
for Windows, the default aging periods are 0 to 30, 31 to 60, and
61 to 90 days. If you use the default aging periods, this may
cause differences in your Vendor Aged and Customer Aged reports.
--In Simply Accounting for DOS, all paid customer invoices that you
did not delete were automatically dropped from customer
statements after 31 days. (The information was still available in
the Customer Detail report until you cleared each invoice.) In
Simply Accounting for Windows, all paid customer invoices appear
on customer statements, until you use the Clear Paid Customer
Invoices choice on the Setup Menu to clear the paid invoices.
Maximum number of lines in journal entries:
The maximum number of lines you can have in a journal entry in the
General, Purchases, Sales, Transfers, and Adjustments Journals is
100.
Selecting an account, inventory item, or project:
To display a list of accounts, items, or projects from which you can
select, double-click or press Enter in an account number, item, or
project field. To select an entry, scroll through the list, then
double-click on the entry you want, or use the Up and Down Arrow
keys to reach the entry, then press Enter.
Date definitions:
On payment checks to vendors, you can enter any date up to the Using
date. This allows you to backdate checks.
Accounting for payments:
When you make a journal entry to account for a payment in the
Payments Journal, the program uses the check date as the posting date.

1. Check printing on HP LaserJet Series IIp & IIIp
---------------------------------------------------
If you experience check printing text alignment problems
on these printers, please contact Hewlett-Packard or your
printer dealer to acquire the latest release of the
HPPCL5A.DRV driver file. Installing this driver via
the Windows Control Panel fixes these problems.
If this will not work to correct the problem or if you
have difficulty locating the necessary driver, then you
can adjust the location of printed text on your checks
as described in the next topic.
2. Fine-tuning check printing on laser printers
------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Money automatically prints information in the
proper position on your checks. However, due to printer
variations and check variations, you may want to fine-tune
the print location yourself.
Use a text editor (such as Windows Notepad) to add the
following line to your MSMONEY.INI file (located in
the directory where you installed Microsoft Money):
PrintOffset=pY pX lY lX
pY Vertical print offset for checks in Portrait mode
(full page of checks)
pX Horizontal print offset for checks in Portrait mode
(full page of checks)
lY Vertical print offset for checks in Landscape mode
(partial page of checks)
lX Horizontal print offset for checks in Landscape mode
(partial page of checks)
All variables are expressed in integers (positive or
negative) and represent offsets in sixteenths (1/16) of
an inch.
Example: Print Offset 2 0 -1 4 would do the following
Full Pages of checks would print 1/8" lower than normal.
Partial Pages of checks would print 1/16" higher than
normal AND 1/4" to the right of normal.
3. Importing information from CheckFree(tm)
--------------------------------------------
When you export your Checkfree data to a QIF file and
import that QIF file into Microsoft Money, you will
need to make an adjustment to the opening balance of
your new Microsoft Money account. After importing,
please choose Account List from the List menu and
enter the correct opening balance for the account
imported from Checkfree.
4. Printing checks on the HP Deskjet printer
---------------------------------------------
Microsoft Money recommends using Laser Voucher checks
with this printer or printing Laser Standard checks in
batches of three (to avoid printing on partial pages
of checks).
The Deskjet's design makes it difficult to correctly
align partial sheets of checks and the default
landscape font provides less than optimal results.
Additionally, certain versions of the DeskJet 500 driver
can cause out of memory errors. Updating the driver or
using the DESKJET.DRV driver from Windows 3.00a or
higher solves this problem.
5. Printing on a Kyocera F-2010 laser printer
----------------------------------------------
Microsoft Money recommends using Laser Voucher checks
with this printer or printing Laser Standard checks in
batches of three (to avoid printing on partial pages
of checks).
The Kyocera F-2010 printer will not print the leftmost
three inches of the page when printing in landscape
mode using the printer's manual feed. You can try
printing partial pages from the letter-sized tray, but
proper alignment of partial sheets of checks in the
tray may be difficult.
6. Printing checks on IBM 4019 & 4029 laser printers
-----------------------------------------------------
When printing a partial page of laser standard checks,
the manual feed orientation is the same as for a
normal 8.5 by 11 inch page. Do not rotate the partial
page "90 degrees" as described in the Microsoft Money
documentation.
7. Printing reports on the Canon LBP-811
-----------------------------------------
When printing reports on this printer there can be column
alignment problems, missing text and missing underlines
and other potential printing errors.
Please contact your printer dealer to inquire about updates
to the Windows drivers for this printer.
8. Printing on the Canon Bubble-Jet BJ-10e
-------------------------------------------
If you are running Windows 3.00 or 3.00a, you will need
to make two adjustments before using Microsoft Money with
a Canon Bubble-Jet BJ-10e printer.
After you have installed the Bubble-Jet driver, you will
need to change all occurrences of "Canon BJ-10e" in your
WIN.INI file to "Canon Bubble-Jet BJ-10e". To do this, you
will need to open your WIN.INI file with a text editor (such
as Windows Notepad). Search for all occurrences of Canon
BJ-10e (if you are using Notepad, use the Find command on
the Search menu). When you find an occurrence, please
change the text to Canon Bubble-Jet BJ-10e. When you have
changed all occurrences, save the file and restart Microsoft
Windows.
You will also need to add a line to your MSMONEY.INI file
(located in the same directory as MSMONEY.EXE). To do this,
you will need to open your MSMONEY.INI file with a text
editor (such as Windows Notepad). Add the following line to
the file:
UseDefaultPrSetup=1
Save the file and restart Microsoft Windows. You will now
be able to print on the Bubble-Jet. Microsoft Money
recommends using Laser Voucher checks or printing Laser
Standard checks in batches of three (to avoid printing
partial pages of checks). When printing, you may receive a
spurious error alert "Invalid DC Index: 13". Just
press Enter to continue and you will be able to print
normally. Remember to remove these changes if you decide to
use another printer with Microsoft Money.
9. NEC 800x600 video display adapters
--------------------------------------
Certain versions of this display adaptor may have refresh
and display problems. If you experience a significant
number of display errors (missing text, partially drawn
screens etc) then please contact your NEC dealer for further
information and the most recent display driver.
10. Texas Instruments TIGA video display adapters
-------------------------------------------------
The list dialog boxes in Microsoft Money may display
incorrectly with the current driver for the TIGA video
display adapter.
This display problem can be corrected by making the
following change to the MSMONEY.INI file (located
in the directory where you installed Microsoft Money).
Use a text editor (such as Windows Notepad) to add the
following line to your MSMONEY.INI file:
NoLightGray=1
Future versions of the driver may correct this problem,
allowing you to remove the line from your MSMONEY.INI file.

TEMP Environment Variable
-------------------------
The TEMP environment variable should be set on each user's
workstation. Usually it is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Make sure
that the environment variable is set to point to a valid directory.
However, do not set it to point to the root "\" directory.
Running cc:Mail and Notes
--------------------------
If you have both cc:Mail and Notes installed on the workstation,
make sure that the cc:Mail program path appears before the Notes
program path in the PATH command line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
File/Open dialog box may not display the previous directory ".."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
In some versions of Novell NetWare, users may find that the
previous directory option ".." does not appear in directory lists.
This makes it difficult to navigate through network directories in
dialog boxes such as File/Open.
To resolve this problem, follow these instructions:
1. Add the following entry to SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG in the user's
root directory -- usually c:\ -- or the directory that the
Novell network drivers are started from:
show dots = on
2. Reboot the user's computer and start the Netware shell and
communication programs -- NETX.COM and IPX.COM. You'll see a
NetWare message acknowledging the new entry.
3. The ".." directory option should now be displayed.
CONFIG.SYS settings
-------------------
Be sure that the "FILES=" parameter in users' CONFIG.SYS files is
set appropriately. A value of 30 should be sufficient both for
workstations running the Organizer client and also for the
workstation that is running the AGENT.EXE program. In Novell
NetWare, you may also need to increasethe value for the File Handles
parameter.
Running SHARE.EXE
-----------------
SHARE.EXE is provided with your standard DOS operating system.
Include it in a user's AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you run Windows from
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, make sure you have SHARE.EXE before the
WIN command line.
Using Superlist of Public Mailing Lists when selecting attendees
----------------------------------------------------------------
Selecting a Superlist of Public Mailing Lists from the main cc:Mail
Directory when creating a meeting will not display users' free time
bars. Use regular public or private mailing lists instead.
Using IBM ThinkPad with Organizer
---------------------------------
If you're using the IBM ThinkPad configured with the IBM VGA driver
directly connected to a LAN, the screen may repaint incorrectly
when you exit the Schedule Meeting dialog box after creating a group
meeting. You need to use the standard Windows VGA driver.
To install a new driver:
1. In Windows Program Manager, double-click the Windows Setup icon.
2. Select Options from the Menu.
3. Select Change System Settings.
4. Choose VGA in the Display list.
5. Choose YES when prompted to Restart Windows.
Alternatively, you can add the following line to the
[Settings] section of your ORGANIZE.INI file in the
"Windows" directory:
[Settings]
NoRoundRegions=1
Inviting a person who is not an e-mail user to a meeting.
--------------------------------------------------------
If you wish to invite a person to a meeting who is not listed
in the mail directory you may do so by performing the following steps:
1) Type the person's name in the Add field of the Scheduling
dialog box.
2) Organizer will inform you that a meeting notice will not be
sent to this person.
3) Click on the OK button to add the name to the attendee list.
The following information is for network administrators only
============================================================
Managing resources
------------------
The Lotus Organizer Administrator's Guide, page 34, describes
setting up Organizer files for resources such as conference rooms
and equipment. There are two ways to manage resources:
1. Resources are managed by an Organizer scheduling agent. In this
case, resources are automatically booked by the scheduling agent
on a first-come, first-served basis.
The resources are defined as remote "R" users in the cc:Mail
Directory. No Organizer licenses or cc:Mail licenses are required
for these resources.
(If you have an assistant monitoring the remote resource's .ORG file,
have the assistant open the .ORG file in read-only mode. Otherwise,
you need to define the resource as an "L" user, which requires a
valid cc:Mail license.)
2. Resources are managed by somebody; for example, by an
administrative assistant. In this case, you define the resources in
the cc:Mail Directory as local "L" users.
Since resources managed in this way are local cc:Mail users, they DO
require valid cc:Mail licenses. No Organizer licenses are required.
NOTE: The Organizer License Packs include extra cc:Mail licenses to
be used exclusively for resources.
No scheduling information needed for aliases or bankshot mailing lists
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you schedule a meeting with an alias that you select from the
cc:Mail directory, Organizer will find the user name that the alias
points to. There is therefore no need to enter scheduling information
for aliases in the cc:Mail Directory.
If you have manually added scheduling information for alias entries in
your Directory, you should remove this information and add it to the
entries that the aliases point to, if it is not already there.
Likewise, scheduling information should not be entered for cc:Mail
bankshot mailing lists, even though these have a location of 'r' in
the directory.
Setting PATH on Novell Netware networks
---------------------------------------
Organizer and cc:Mail for Windows 2.0 require that the cc:Mail program
path containing the VIM DLLs be listed in the user's PATH environment
variable. The install programs for both products optionally set this
path in the user's AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Because the length of the PATH value is limited, we recommend that
NetWare administrators write the NetWare login script for cc:Mail and
Organizer users to add the cc:Mail program path directory as a search
path when the users log onto the network.
This will reduce the chances of exceeding the maximum PATH length.
It won't matter if users don't answer "Yes" to the prompt to add the
path to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file during install.
~ORGAGNT and server entries
---------------------------
If you have multiple post offices and you don't have cc:Mail
Automatic Directory Exchange, you need to make an entry for the agent
(for example, ~ORGAGNT) in every post office. Make the agent entry
in the same way that you'd make a post office entry, as in the example
below.
In post office Silver-HQ:
~ORGAGNT P
In the other post offices:
~ORGAGNT p Silver-HQ
The same is also true for server entries. You can use SRVADMIN.EXE to
create server entries in each post office that is in use by Organizer.
Read/Write access rights to cc:Mail post office
-----------------------------------------------
The Organizer network guest account, referred to in the Administrator's
Guide as ORGACCT, requires both read and write access rights to the
cc:Mail post office directory; for example M:\CCDATA.
IBM OS/2 LAN SERVER 3.0
-----------------------
When running Organizer in Windows-OS/2 under IBM OS/2 LAN SERVER 3.0,
you may find that
- When users go to the WinOS/2 desktop, the error message
"LANSRV.DRV not found" appears,
- WinOS/2 under IBM LAN SERVER treats network drives as local drives.
- Users can't open files by selecting user names. Consequently, they
cannot use group scheduling.
If this occurs, do the following:
1. Install Organizer. Do not use SETUPDIR. Use DIRADMIN to
add scheduling information for the Organizer users.
2. Delete ORGNET.DLL and rename PORTABLE.DLL as ORGNET.DLL in the
Organizer program directory.
3. Run WORKSTN.EXE.
4. Find the DOS LAN requester diskettes and unzip LANSRV.DRV and
WINDLP.DLL.
5. Copy these two files OS/2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM.
6. Set a path to the files in CONFIG.SYS.
7. Add the following lines to CONFIG.SYS.
DEVICE=C:\IBMCOM\PROTOCOL\LANPDD\OS2
DEVICE=C:\IBMCOM\PROTOCOL\LANVDD\OS2
8. Add the following line to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
<path>LTSVCFG N1=1 S=H C=10 N=2
SETUPDIR may not run properly on OS/2 on a IBM LAN Server network
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If you choose to run SETUPDIR during installation, or if you run
SETUPDIR.EXE after installation, the program may not work properly
on OS/2 running IBM LAN Server. A DOS window will appear briefly
and then disappear without any updates being done.
To update your directory if this happens, use DIRADMIN instead of
SETUPDIR refer to the Administration Guide section on using the
DIRADMIN command.
UPDVIM.BAT may fail if VIM DLLs are read-only
---------------------------------------------
UPDVIM.BAT is a script file that the Install program may write if
your cc:Mail and Organizer DLLs are incompatible and your post office
is open at the time of installation. Install gives you the choice
of quitting Install, shutting down the post office, and updating the
DLLs, or of continuing and running the UPDVIM.BAT script later.
Install may find some incompatible DLLs but be able to fix them,
in which case the UPDVIM.BAT file will not be written.
Starting with cc:Mail for Windows 2.0, the Mail Engine and VIM DLLs
in the cc:Mail program directory are read-only files. If Install
indicates that you should run the UPDVIM.BAT script to update your
DLLs, you may need to make them writable by using the
"attrib -r <filename>" command for each file listed in UPDVIM.BAT.
You can do this easily by modifying UPDVIM.BAT to add the attrib
command before each copy command.
Running the Organizer Agent from a local drive
----------------------------------------------
The Organizer agent (AGENT.EXE) must have read, write, create, and
erase rights to the ORGANIZE\ADMIN directory, which is where it
runs by default.
You may prefer to copy AGENT.EXE and the resource files (*.RI) to
a local drive and run it from there instead.
Here are a few things that you should know before you actually start: (You may press ALT F4 to exit at any time) ******************************************************************* WINDOWS 3.1 ******************************************************************* We recommend that you upgrade to Windows 3.1 as it is faster and more reliable. However, under Windows 3.1 please note the following if you use a dot matrix printer. Microsoft has greatly improved the appearance of dot matrix printing, but in some cases speed may be sacrificed. If this is a problem for you then we recommend one of the following: * In Maintain, Defaults, Global Options, check "Force draft mode". This will help in some cases. * Use the Windows 3.1 IBM Graphics printer driver in the highest (default) resolution if your printer is compatible with that driver. ******************************************************************* Bank Reconciliation ******************************************************************* Peachtree Accounting for Windows has a number of new features. One of them is an optional bank reconciliation. Please note that the bank reconciliation system starts with the premise that all checks and deposits entered into the system are still outstanding. Therefore it may be necessary to clear numerous transactions (double click them) the very first period that you reconcile your bank account. ******************************************************************* The rest of this file only applies if you are upgrading from Peachtree Crystal Accounting ******************************************************************* 1. When you open an old company for the first time, Peachtree Accounting for Windows will automatically update it. However, this automatic update may fail if you run out of disk space. Please insure that you have adequate disk space, AND that you have made a backup of your data first. For this purpose, "adequate" is about 2 times the total size of all of your current data files in your largest company. 2. Font selection is now printer independent. If you have selected explicit fonts for any reports, either in the Options, Fonts screen or in the financial reports screen, you will need to reselect them. 3. We have added a number of reports. As a result of this, you will need to rebuild any Multiple report files that you may have saved. *******************************************************************

Dear PC Globe User,
Thank for purchasing PC Globe 4.0.
We are delighted to inform you of an additional enhancement that
is not mentioned in your manual. In the CURRENCY CONVERSION utility,
it is now possible to edit and save new currency exchange rates
as often as you wish. To do so, follow these instructions:
- Before starting PC Globe, be sure that your DOS computer clock is
set at the correct date. This is important because the CURRENCY
CONVERSION utility automatically inputs the new date based on your
computer clock. To check your computer clock, type DATE next to
your DOS prompt.
- To edit the entire list of currency exchange rates, place the cursor
over CURRENCY CONVERSION on the UTILITIES menu and press <enter>
or mouse <left>. Then place the cursor over EDIT EXCHANGE RATES and
press <enter> or mouse <left>. A list of currencies with their
respective exchange rates will be displayed. You may edit the numbers
on this list based on the new information available to you. To save
your changes, press <ins>.
{
- For editing the currency exchange list, we recommend that you use
the interbank rates of exchange listed in your daily newspaper. One
of the best lists available appears every Monday in the Wall Street
Journal. This list is prepared by BankAmerica and includes all of
the currencies contained in PC Globe. The list usually appears as
a special advertisement in the third section of the paper (Money &
Investing).
{
If your version of PC GLOBE 4.0 program is operating smoothly, there is
no need to continue reading. The instructions below pertain to optional
installation parameters, disk configurations and printers.
OPTIONAL INSTALL PARAMETERS
It is possible to modify the installation routine by typing a hyphen and
specific letters after the word "install" as described below:
install -o
Overrides autodetection of graphics card type.
The INSTALL program automatically determines the type of graphics
card that your computer has. Unfortunately, sometimes graphics cards
are not always 100% compatible and can be misidentified as invalid.
Adding -o to the command line will bypass automatic detection and
allow any graphics mode to be selected.
{
install -s
No status check for printer.
If you are using a print spooler, you may need to add this parameter
in order for your printer to function properly.
install -tn
Text screen delay (replace n with a number from 0 to 9).
install -gn
Graphics screen delay (replace n with a number from 0 to 9).
PC GLOBE uses graphics and text screens in order to increase performance
and optimize memory usage. Some monitors, especially multi-frequency
monitors, will appear unstabilized and flicker when changing modes.
This option allows the user to add a delay after changing modes to
reduce or eliminate the flicker.
{
More than one optional parameter can be included on the INSTALL command
line. The following example would install for no status check for the
printer and set the text screen delay to 5, and the graphic screen
delay to 4:

PRINTERS
If you have a printer that is not listed, try the printer that is the most
like yours. If you have an older dot-matrix printer, try typing graphics
from the dos prompt and using the shift-printscreen key to print.
For some printers there will not be a difference between "Draft" and "Normal"
modes.
Thanks again.

SIMCITY 2000 (TM) Last Minute Info 12/27/93 ----------------- Please read _ALL_ of this document! This stuff is important! It covers a lot about memory, installation, various graphics cards and sound cards, gameplay issues, importing cities from other versions of SimCity 2000 and hot keys. ** MOST IMPORTANT STUFF--ABOUT MEMORY SimCity 2000 requires a lot of memory to run--4 MB total, but also a lot of free memory in the conventional 640K range. On some machines, even if you have the required 4 MB, SimCity 2000 may report that you do not have enough free extended or conventional memory. If this is the case, your best alternative is to create a boot disk as outlined on page 6 of the SimCity 2000 DOS Addendum/Quick Start Guide. Another solution that may help is to install SimCity 2000 with No Sound and No Music selected. If you have already installed SimCity 2000, you can change your current sound, music, and video settings by running the INSTALL.EXE program in the SimCity 2000 directory. We recommend that you not load any memory managers or disk cache utilities while running SimCity 2000. Especially if you are using DOS 6 on a machine with only 4 MB RAM. If you are using a memory manager, you MUST NOT have it set in auto mode--this will cause a conflict with SimCity 2000. If you are using MS-DOS 6 and absolutely must load EMM386.EXE, you will need to either have the EMS size set to 'noems' or larger than 4096. See your DOS manual for information on how to do this. ** INSTALLING STUFF Video Selection --------------- The SimCity 2000 installer will attempt to figure out what kind of video card you have in your machine. If it can, it will list that card in the video selection window. If it is not sure what kind of video card you have, or the installer detects a VESA driver in memory (or in BIOS), it will default to the VESA VIDEO DRIVER. You can click on the arrow to the right of the VESA VIDEO DRIVER entry for a list of other cards that the installer thinks you might have. If your card is on this list, you can select it instead of the defaulted VESA driver. Sound Selection --------------- SimCity 2000 cannot automatically detect what kind of sound card you have in your machine. You will need to pick your sound card(s) out of the lists provided. The installer will then try to verify the presence of that sound card in your machine. If the installer is unable to detect the sound card you have specified, certain hardware settings on your card may be different than what SimCity 2000 is expecting. To change these settings, select the Change Settings option from the sound card verification window (Where it says "OK" or "Failed!"). For more information on these hardware settings, see the manual that came with your sound card. ** VIDEO CARD SUPPORT VESA Drivers ------------ SimCity 2000 supports a variety of different video cards and VESA mode 101 (640x480x256 colors). VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association. If you do not find your video card listed by name in the installer, we recommend that you pick VESA VIDEO DRIVER and run a VESA driver supported by your video card before booting SimCity 2000. Some video cards have built-in VESA drivers so you won't need to manually load a driver. Other video cards have an external file that needs to be run from the DOS command line before running SimCity 2000. Others, like the Diamond Viper VLB, have the VESA driver built into the video card BIOS, but you still need to tell the card to load the driver before running SimCity 2000. In the case of the Diamond Viper VLB, you would need to type 'VPRMODE VESA' [Enter} at the command line to load the driver. If the VESA driver is an external program, it would probably be found on the disks that came with your video card. If you don't have a VESA driver you should contact your video card manufacturer. We have included VESA drivers for most popular cards on your SimCity 2000 disk 1. ATI Ultra Pro or Mach 32 Video Cards ------------------------------------ If you have an ATI Ultra Pro or other card based on the Mach 32 chip, you must run the included utility MW_ATIUP.EXE before playing SimCity, for complete compatibility. Simply type: MW_ATIUP [Enter] then type: SC2000 [Enter] to use your ATI card with SimCity 2000. Trident Video Cards ------------------- Some older Trident video cards may not be compatible with the Trident driver installed by SimCity 2000. If you installed a Trident video card and are experiencing video problems, try running the INSTALL.EXE program in the SimCity 2000 directory and selecting the VESA video driver. ** SOUND CARD SUPPORT Miles Design Drivers -------------------- SimCity 2000 sound support is accomplished through the use of the John Miles Design AIL audio driver libraries. These drivers are available for many different sound cards, most of which are included and installed by the SimCity 2000 installer. If your sound card is not mentioned specifically in the installer, you may be able to get drivers from the manufacturer for full SimCity 2000 sound. SimCity 2000 requires "32-bit flat mode" Miles Design drivers. Non-32-bit drivers will not work. Pro Audio Spectrum ------------------ MUSIC: The Music Driver for the Pro Audio Spectrum requires the Media Vision Driver MVSOUND.SYS to be loaded in memory as a driver in your CONFIG.SYS file. If this driver is not loaded, you will receive a verification failure during installation, and you will NOT hear music during the game. For more information about MVSOUND.SYS, please refer to your Pro Audio Spectrum users manual, or call Media Vision Technical Support. SOUND EFFECTS: If you choose Pro Audio Spectrum as your Sound Effects sound card, you may experience some sound effects "dropouts," or even no sound at all. This will only happen on some Pro Audio Spectrum sound cards. If this does happen, you can re-run the INSTALL program and choose Sound Blaster for the Sound Effects Card, instead of Pro Audio Spectrum. CAUTION: This may or may not work depending on your Pro Audio Spectrum. Please call Media Vision Technical Support if you have more problems. Gravis Ultrasound ----------------- SimCity 2000 is compatible with the SBOS Sound Blaster Emulation TSR for the GUS. However, it is NOT compatible with both SBOS and most memory managers (such as EMM386) loaded the same time. DO NOT attempt to run or even install SimCity 2000 with both SBOS and a memory manager present. Bad things may happen. Aria Sound Cards ---------------- We now have Miles Design Drivers for all sound cards based on the ARIA Sound Synth by Sierra Semiconductor. These include: Viva Maestro 16 VR Alpha Systems Cyber Audio Add Tech Sound 2000 Sound Tower Cardinal Technologies Sound Pilot Diamond Computer Systems Sonic Sound Sonic Sound Pro Genoa Systems AudioBahn AudioBahn Listener Kingston Technologies Omnivox Zoltrix TESS and Others... ** GAME PLAY ISSUES Saved Cities ------------ For your simulating pleasure, we have included several saved cities created by various Maxis employees. They are located in your SimCity 2000 directory. Micro-Simulators ---------------- When querying some structures, you get local statistics about that structure. For instance, querying on a Police Station will tell you how many crimes and arrests were handled by that station, querying on a school will tell how many teachers and students are attending as well as the average grade of the students. Most placeable structures have these microsimulators (police, fire, schools, colleges, power plants, the Mayor's House, arcologies, etc). Some structures share one microsimulator for all the structures placed. Things like the bus system, railroad depots, marinas, libraries, windmills, and hydroelectric power plants among others have 1 microsimulator for each category (one microsimulator for all the bus stations, one for all the railroad depots, etc). Where is this all headed, you ask? Well, each city can only have 150 microsimulators in it. If you go beyond that, the structure you place will still affect the simulator globally (police stations will still stop crime, bus stations will still carry passengers, arcologies will still hold people), but you just won't be able to see any local information on those structures. This isn't going to harm your city in any way. We're telling you this because it's pretty easy to run out of microsimulators in a large city and we don't want you thinking something's wrong. Terrain Editing --------------- If you are building a city and go into the terrain edit mode, your city will disappear, but any trees or water that you have placed in the city will show up in edit terrain mode. Also, if you have placed a bridge or other structure that automatically builds landfill, the landfill will also show up in edit terrain mode. These can be removed with the lower terrain tool. Airports -------- Keep in mind when building an airport that it needs space for a runway, or it will not build. The minimum useable airport space is 2 x 6 tiles. Your best bet is to build the airport in 4 x 6 tile increments. And make sure no tall buildings are nearby, SimCity 2000 pilots are not known for their building-avoidance skills! In addition, make sure that your airport is blanketed with power lines. Airports may not initially build unless they are receiving power to certain tiles. ** IMPORTING OTHER CITIES Importing Cities From SimCity Classic and SimCity 2000 Mac ---------------------------------------------------------- You can load saved cities from both SimCity Classic and SimCity 2000 Mac into SimCity 2000 DOS. To import SimCity Classic DOS and SimCity 2000 Mac saved games, rename the file so that the extension is ".SC2". If the file is from SimCity Classic DOS, SimCity 2000 will ask you if you wish to convert the file to SimCity 2000 format. The conversion will not change the original file until you save it. To convert SimCity 2000 DOS files for use in SimCity 2000 Mac you will need to give the file a Filetype and Creator for the Macintosh. This can be done with ResEdit, Access PC, or one of several other PC->Mac conversion utilities. **NEWSPAPER If you are running low on hard drive space, you may experience a problem where multiple newspaper stories are open at one time. You will need at least 300KB free hard drive space (on the drive that SimCity 2000 is installed to) before starting the game, and this will fix the problem. If you do get multiple stories, you can clear them by pressing 'ENTER'. If you are running into low memory situations, the Newspaper menu item may gray out. Don't be alarmed, it won't hurt anything. ** HOT KEYS SHIFT KEY- 1. While placing items, press the shift key before releasing the mouse button will cancel placement of the item. 2. Holding down the shift key while clicking on an item in the edit window will open the Query window on that specific item. 3. Holding down the shift key while clicking on a button or entry in a window will open a help description on that item. CTRL - temporarily turns the current cursor into the Bulldoze Tool. HOME - zooms in one level on your city END - zooms out one level on your city DEL - rotates your city view left 90 degrees PAGE DOWN - rotates your city right 90 degrees Cursors Keys - scrolls around city Thanks for buying SimCity 2000 We hope you enjoy playing it as much as we enjoyed creating it! [EOF] -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Windows Mayor, We threw SimCity for Windows out every Window we could find and it didn't break. If it breaks on you please let us know so we can fix it. Our address and phone number are on the credits page in the manual. We also added two short cut keys that didn't make it on the keyboard chart or in the manual. CTRL-ALT-S changes the keyboard focus to the Status bar and CTRL-ALT-C changes it to the Control bar. Maxis SimCivil Servants

LOCK89 SOFTWARE PROTECTION SYSTEM`@I`
I.Introduction
The LOCK89 protection system has been created for software developers
and distributor to provide effective protection against the unauthorized
duplication of computer applications program residing on floppy diskettes.
Each LOCK89 contains a unique fingerprint just like eneryone does to
which the protected file is keyed. And this fingerprint can never be
duplicated by any software or copy machine (or copy card). Every time the
protected program is executed, the LOCk89 process will cause the
fingerprint on the diskette to be compared to the original fingerprint
characteristics embeded within encrypted file.
If a match is found, the program will be allowed to run, In the case of
a mismatch or no fingerprint at all, an error will occur causing control
to be passed back to DOS.
With the excellent program shell, protected program has the powerful
mechanism of anti-trace which prevent protected program from being traced
by any debug system.LOCK89 may be write-protected.
LDGS works on almost any PC/MS-DOS computer including the IBM PC/XT/AT,
IBM PS/2, 80286, 80386 or its compatible machines.
Only programs that are .COM or .EXE executable binary files can be
protected. This includes Assembly Lanuage Programs, Compiled Basic,
Compiled 'C', Compiled Fortran, and Compiled Pascal etc.
II.USING LOCK89 DISKETTE
In DOS environment, type in:
[d:][path]LOCK89 [d:][path]sourcefile.EXT [d:][path]destfile<ENTER>
d: designates drive, default is current drive.
path designates derectory path.
sourcefile designates the name of the file to be protected.
.EXT designates extention of file. .EXE or .COM.
destfile designates the name of the protected destention file.
Note that extention of all protected files is .EXE.
EXAMPFLE:
Current drive is C:, type in:
C>A:LOCK89 B:\UNLOCK\INFILE.EXE D:\LOCK\OUTFILE<ENTER>
After press ENTER key, the following information will be displayed on the
screen:
LOCK89 Protection Floppy Disk Version 1.0
(C) Copyright SYNTONE Corporation 1989
Please waiting......
Now LOCK89 is working. When it is finished, "Good bye!" will be displayed
on the screen.
The LOCK89 diskette can be filled with as many protected or unprotected
programs as desired.
LOCk89 diskette is limited only by the capacity of the diskette. Note that
each protected file is approximately 6KB larger than the original file.
Protected file may be backed-up with normal system utilities. But when it is
executed, LOCK89 diskette must be inserted into drive A: or drive B:.
III.TRANSFERING THE PC/MS-DOS OPERATING SYSTEM ON A LOCK89 DISKETTE
1.Place the DOS System Master into drive A:.
2.Place the LOCK89 diskette into drive B:.
3.Copy all the files in drive B: to a sub-directory of drive C:.
4.Enter A>DEL B:*.*
5.Enter A>SYS B: to write the Operating System onto the LOCK89 diskette.
6.Once the "System Transferred" message is displayed, copy the file COMMAND.COM
onto the LOCK89 diskette by entering the following command:
A>COPY COMMAND.COM B:
7.Restore the original files on the LOCK89 diskette from the sub-directory of
drive C:.
8.Remove both diskettes, and place the LOCK89 diskette into drive A:. Press
CTRL/ALT/DEL key to verify the system loads (boot).
