"desc_text": "SIMCITY 2000 (TM) \r\nLast Minute Info \r\n12/27/93 \r\n----------------- \r\n \r\nPlease read _ALL_ of this document! This stuff is important! \r\n \r\nIt covers a lot about memory, installation, various graphics cards and \r\nsound cards, gameplay issues, importing cities from other versions of \r\nSimCity 2000 and hot keys. \r\n \r\n** MOST IMPORTANT STUFF--ABOUT MEMORY \r\n \r\nSimCity 2000 requires a lot of memory to run--4 MB total, but also a lot \r\nof free memory in the conventional 640K range. On some machines, even if \r\nyou have the required 4 MB, SimCity 2000 may report that you do not have \r\nenough free extended or conventional memory. If this is the case, your \r\nbest alternative is to create a boot disk as outlined on page 6 of the \r\nSimCity 2000 DOS Addendum/Quick Start Guide. Another solution that may \r\nhelp is to install SimCity 2000 with No Sound and No Music selected. If \r\nyou have already installed SimCity 2000, you can change your current \r\nsound, music, and video settings by running the INSTALL.EXE program in \r\nthe SimCity 2000 directory. \r\n \r\nWe recommend that you not load any memory managers or disk cache \r\nutilities while running SimCity 2000. Especially if you are using \r\nDOS 6 on a machine with only 4 MB RAM. \r\n \r\nIf you are using a memory manager, you MUST NOT have it set in auto \r\nmode--this will cause a conflict with SimCity 2000. \r\n \r\n \r\nIf you are using MS-DOS 6 and absolutely must load EMM386.EXE, \r\nyou will need to either have the EMS size set to 'noems' or larger \r\nthan 4096. See your DOS manual for information on how to do this. \r\n \r\n \r\n** INSTALLING STUFF \r\n \r\nVideo Selection \r\n--------------- \r\nThe SimCity 2000 installer will attempt to figure out what kind of \r\nvideo card you have in your machine. If it can, it will list that card \r\nin the video selection window. If it is not sure what kind of video \r\ncard you have, or the installer detects a VESA driver in memory (or \r\nin BIOS), it will default to the VESA VIDEO DRIVER. You can click on \r\nthe arrow to the right of the VESA VIDEO DRIVER entry for a list of \r\nother cards that the installer thinks you might have. If your card is \r\non this list, you can select it instead of the defaulted VESA driver. \r\n \r\nSound Selection \r\n--------------- \r\nSimCity 2000 cannot automatically detect what kind of sound card you \r\nhave in your machine. You will need to pick your sound card(s) \r\nout of the lists provided. The installer will then try to verify the \r\npresence of that sound card in your machine. If the installer is \r\nunable to detect the sound card you have specified, certain hardware \r\nsettings on your card may be different than what SimCity 2000 is \r\nexpecting. To change these settings, select the Change Settings \r\noption from the sound card verification window (Where it says \"OK\" \r\nor \"Failed!\"). For more information on these hardware settings, see \r\nthe manual that came with your sound card. \r\n \r\n \r\n** VIDEO CARD SUPPORT \r\n \r\nVESA Drivers \r\n------------ \r\nSimCity 2000 supports a variety of different video cards and VESA mode \r\n101 (640x480x256 colors). VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards \r\nAssociation. If you do not find your video card listed by name in the \r\ninstaller, we recommend that you pick VESA VIDEO DRIVER and run a \r\nVESA driver supported by your video card before booting SimCity 2000. \r\nSome video cards have built-in VESA drivers so you won't need to \r\nmanually load a driver. Other video cards have an external file that \r\nneeds to be run from the DOS command line before running SimCity 2000. \r\nOthers, like the Diamond Viper VLB, have the VESA driver built into \r\nthe video card BIOS, but you still need to tell the card to load the \r\ndriver before running SimCity 2000. In the case of the Diamond Viper \r\nVLB, you would need to type 'VPRMODE VESA' [Enter} at the command line \r\nto load the driver. \r\n \r\nIf the VESA driver is an external program, it would probably be found \r\non the disks that came with your video card. If you don't have a VESA \r\ndriver you should contact your video card manufacturer. We have \r\nincluded VESA drivers for most popular cards on your SimCity 2000\r\ndisk 1.\r\n \r\nATI Ultra Pro or Mach 32 Video Cards \r\n------------------------------------ \r\nIf you have an ATI Ultra Pro or other card based on the Mach 32 chip, \r\nyou must run the included utility MW_ATIUP.EXE before playing \r\nSimCity, for complete compatibility. \r\n\r\nSimply type: MW_ATIUP [Enter] \r\nthen type: SC2000 [Enter] \r\n \r\nto use your ATI card with SimCity 2000. \r\n \r\nTrident Video Cards \r\n------------------- \r\nSome older Trident video cards may not be compatible with the Trident \r\ndriver installed by SimCity 2000. If you installed a Trident video \r\ncard and are experiencing video problems, try running the INSTALL.EXE \r\nprogram in the SimCity 2000 directory and selecting the VESA video \r\ndriver. \r\n \r\n \r\n** SOUND CARD SUPPORT \r\n \r\nMiles Design Drivers \r\n-------------------- \r\nSimCity 2000 sound support is accomplished through the use of the \r\nJohn Miles Design AIL audio driver libraries. These drivers are \r\navailable for many different sound cards, most of which are included \r\nand installed by the SimCity 2000 installer. If your sound card is \r\nnot mentioned specifically in the installer, you may be able to get \r\ndrivers from the manufacturer for full SimCity 2000 sound. \r\nSimCity 2000 requires \"32-bit flat mode\" Miles Design drivers. \r\nNon-32-bit drivers will not work. \r\n \r\nPro Audio Spectrum \r\n------------------ \r\nMUSIC: The Music Driver for the Pro Audio Spectrum requires the Media \r\nVision Driver MVSOUND.SYS to be loaded in memory as a driver in \r\nyour CONFIG.SYS file. If this driver is not loaded, you will receive a \r\nverification failure during installation, and you will NOT hear music \r\nduring the game. For more information about MVSOUND.SYS, please \r\nrefer to your Pro Audio Spectrum users manual, or call Media Vision \r\nTechnical Support. \r\n \r\nSOUND EFFECTS: If you choose Pro Audio Spectrum as your Sound \r\nEffects sound card, you may experience some sound effects \"dropouts,\" \r\nor even no sound at all. This will only happen on some Pro Audio \r\nSpectrum sound cards. If this does happen, you can re-run the INSTALL \r\nprogram and choose Sound Blaster for the Sound Effects Card, instead \r\nof Pro Audio Spectrum. \r\n \r\nCAUTION: This may or may not work depending on your Pro Audio \r\nSpectrum. Please call Media Vision Technical Support if you have more \r\nproblems. \r\n \r\nGravis Ultrasound \r\n----------------- \r\nSimCity 2000 is compatible with the SBOS Sound Blaster Emulation TSR \r\nfor the GUS. However, it is NOT compatible with both SBOS and most \r\nmemory managers (such as EMM386) loaded the same time. DO NOT attempt \r\nto run or even install SimCity 2000 with both SBOS and a memory \r\nmanager present. Bad things may happen. \r\n \r\nAria Sound Cards \r\n---------------- \r\nWe now have Miles Design Drivers for all sound cards based on the \r\nARIA Sound Synth by Sierra Semiconductor. These include: \r\n \r\nViva Maestro 16 \r\nVR Alpha Systems \r\nCyber Audio \r\nAdd Tech Sound 2000 \r\nSound Tower \r\nCardinal Technologies Sound Pilot \r\nDiamond Computer Systems Sonic Sound \r\nSonic Sound Pro \r\nGenoa Systems AudioBahn \r\nAudioBahn Listener \r\nKingston Technologies Omnivox \r\nZoltrix TESS \r\nand Others... \r\n \r\n** GAME PLAY ISSUES \r\n \r\nSaved Cities\r\n------------\r\nFor your simulating pleasure, we have included several saved cities\r\ncreated by various Maxis employees. They are located in your \r\nSimCity 2000 directory.\r\n\r\nMicro-Simulators \r\n---------------- \r\nWhen querying some structures, you get local statistics about that \r\nstructure. For instance, querying on a Police Station will tell you \r\nhow many crimes and arrests were handled by that station, querying \r\non a school will tell how many teachers and students are attending \r\nas well as the average grade of the students. Most placeable \r\nstructures have these microsimulators (police, fire, schools, \r\ncolleges, power plants, the Mayor's House, arcologies, etc). Some \r\nstructures share one microsimulator for all the structures placed. \r\nThings like the bus system, railroad depots, marinas, libraries, \r\nwindmills, and hydroelectric power plants among others have 1 \r\nmicrosimulator for each category (one microsimulator for all the bus \r\nstations, one for all the railroad depots, etc). Where is this \r\nall headed, you ask? Well, each city can only have 150 \r\nmicrosimulators in it. If you go beyond that, the structure you place \r\nwill still affect the simulator globally (police stations will still \r\nstop crime, bus stations will still carry passengers, arcologies will \r\nstill hold people), but you just won't be able to see any local \r\ninformation on those structures. This isn't going to harm your city \r\nin any way. We're telling you this because it's pretty easy to run \r\nout of microsimulators in a large city and we don't want you thinking \r\nsomething's wrong. \r\n \r\nTerrain Editing \r\n--------------- \r\nIf you are building a city and go into the terrain edit mode, your \r\ncity will disappear, but any trees or water that you have placed in \r\nthe city will show up in edit terrain mode. Also, if you have placed \r\na bridge or other structure that automatically builds landfill, the \r\nlandfill will also show up in edit terrain mode. These can be removed \r\nwith the lower terrain tool. \r\n \r\nAirports \r\n-------- \r\nKeep in mind when building an airport that it needs space for a \r\nrunway, or it will not build. The minimum useable airport space is \r\n2 x 6 tiles. Your best bet is to build the airport in 4 x 6 tile \r\nincrements. And make sure no tall buildings are nearby, SimCity 2000 \r\npilots are not known for their building-avoidance skills! \r\nIn addition, make sure that your airport is blanketed with power \r\nlines. Airports may not initially build unless they are receiving \r\npower to certain tiles. \r\n\r\n \r\n** IMPORTING OTHER CITIES \r\n \r\nImporting Cities From SimCity Classic and SimCity 2000 Mac \r\n---------------------------------------------------------- \r\nYou can load saved cities from both SimCity Classic and SimCity 2000 \r\nMac into SimCity 2000 DOS. \r\n \r\nTo import SimCity Classic DOS and SimCity 2000 Mac saved games, \r\nrename the file so that the extension is \".SC2\". If the file is from \r\nSimCity Classic DOS, SimCity 2000 will ask you if you wish to convert \r\nthe file to SimCity 2000 format. The conversion will not change the \r\noriginal file until you save it. \r\n \r\nTo convert SimCity 2000 DOS files for use in SimCity 2000 Mac you \r\nwill need to give the file a Filetype and Creator for the Macintosh.\r\nThis can be done with ResEdit, Access PC, or one of several other\r\nPC->Mac conversion utilities.\r\n \r\n**NEWSPAPER\r\n\r\nIf you are running low on hard drive space, you may experience a \r\nproblem where multiple newspaper stories are open at one time. You\r\nwill need at least 300KB free hard drive space (on the drive that\r\nSimCity 2000 is installed to) before starting the game, and this \r\nwill fix the problem. If you do get multiple stories, you can clear\r\nthem by pressing 'ENTER'.\r\n\r\nIf you are running into low memory situations, the Newspaper menu item\r\nmay gray out. Don't be alarmed, it won't hurt anything.\r\n\r\n** HOT KEYS \r\n \r\nSHIFT KEY- \r\n1. While placing items, press the shift key before releasing the mouse \r\nbutton will cancel placement of the item. \r\n2. Holding down the shift key while clicking on an item in the edit \r\nwindow will open the Query window on that specific item. \r\n3. Holding down the shift key while clicking on a button or entry in \r\na window will open a help description on that item. \r\n \r\nCTRL - temporarily turns the current cursor into the Bulldoze Tool. \r\nHOME - zooms in one level on your city \r\nEND - zooms out one level on your city \r\nDEL - rotates your city view left 90 degrees \r\nPAGE DOWN - rotates your city right 90 degrees \r\nCursors Keys - scrolls around city \r\n \r\nThanks for buying SimCity 2000 \r\nWe hope you enjoy playing it as much as we enjoyed creating it! \r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n[EOF] \r\n-------------------------------------------------------------------------"
