MultiTasker\r\n Version 1.2\r\n\r\n\r\nNote: The following instructions assume that VM/386 is \r\ninstalled to the C: drive and the \\VM386 directory. If not, \r\nplease substitute the actual drive letter and directory name \r\nwhich VM/386 is installed to where appropriate.\r\n\r\nThe following topics are covered in this README disk file:\r\n * 1. Installing Version 1.2\r\n * 2. Enhancements for Version 1.2\r\n * 3. Compatibility List\r\n * 4. Other Notes\r\nAdditional topics, as listed at the end of this file, are\r\ncovered in the printed READ ME FIRST document which comes\r\nwith VM/386.\r\n\r\n INSTALLING VERSION 1.2\r\n\r\nREMOVE DISK CACHE, EXPANDED MEMORY MANAGER (EMM) BEFORE \r\nINSTALLING VM/386\r\nYou must edit your CONFIG.SYS file before installing VM/386. \r\nThe procedure is described in the manual's Chapter 2, \r\nInstallation. The following device drivers must be removed:\r\n * Expanded memory managers such as CEMM.SYS and QEMM.SYS. \r\n * Other device drivers which use Protected Mode. \r\n * Device drivers such as SMARTDRV.SYS which install a disk \r\n cache. The disk cache may interfere with VM/386 hard disk \r\n driver selection if it is not removed (see below).\r\n * RAM disks such as VDISK.SYS. \r\nVM/386 has its own expanded memory manager, disk cache, and \r\nshared RAM disk which offer enhanced versions of these \r\nfunctions.\r\n\r\nREMOVE OTHER DEVICE DRIVERS, MEMORY-RESIDENT PROGRAMS (TSRs) \r\nBEFORE USING VM/386\r\nDevice drivers installed by CONFIG.SYS and memory-resident \r\nprograms started by AUTOEXEC.BAT are not accessible to \r\nVirtual Machines once VM/386 is started, yet they still \r\noccupy memory. Remove device drivers from CONFIG.SYS and \r\nmemory-resident programs from AUTOEXEC.BAT to conserve system \r\nmemory. Then add the device drivers to custom CONFIG files \r\nused by Virtual Machines, and memory-resident programs to \r\ncustom AUTOEXEC files used by Virtual Machines, as needed to \r\nmake best use of each Virtual Machine. \r\n\r\nINSTALLING VM/386 FOR THE FIRST TIME\r\nCarefully follow the installation instructions in Chapter 2 \r\nof the manual:\r\n * Make a working copy of your VM/386 disk - from a DOS \r\n prompt, type: \r\n DISKCOPY A: A: \r\n * Insert the working disk in drive A: and reboot (Ctrl- \r\n Alt-Del). \r\n * Remove the working disk and reboot (Ctrl-Alt-Del).\r\n * Confirm that you are at a DOS prompt (i.e., C:>).\r\n * Insert the working disk in drive A: and type: A: \r\n * Type: SETUP and follow the instructions on the \r\n screen. \r\n\r\nUPGRADING AN EXISTING COPY OF VM/386\r\nWhen you upgrade an existing copy of VM/386, the old \r\nCONFIG.VM and AUTOEXEC.VM files are saved in the root \r\ndirectory as CONFIG.VM2 and AUTOEXEC.VM2. New CONFIG.VM and \r\nAUTOEXEC.VM files are created by adding entries to the \r\nCONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files found in the root \r\ndirectory. \r\n\r\nVM/386 can be installed in either of two ways:\r\n\r\n1. Install the new version of VM/386 to the same drive and \r\n directory as the old one. \r\n\r\nThe following steps will occur:\r\n * Existing Profiles will be preserved. \r\n * A new Profile called COMM, and a group of Profiles with \r\n the letters \"PC\" in the Profile name (e.g., \"640K_PC\"), \r\n will be added to the Profiles list. (To delete the \r\n existing \"STD\" Profiles, go to a DOS prompt in the \r\n VM/386 directory and enter the command: DEL ???K_STD.PRO.)\r\n * The default Startup File, VMSTART.SUF, will be replaced by \r\n a new file. Other Startup Files will be preserved. \r\n\r\n2. Install the new version of VM/386 to a different drive \r\n and/or directory than the old one.\r\n\r\nThis allows both versions to be available on the hard disk \r\nsimultaneously. Before creating a Virtual Machine with the \r\nold version of VM/386, change the Boot Files menu on the \r\nCreate Virtual Machine screen (1.1) to use CONFIG.VM2 and \r\nAUTOEXEC.VM2. These Boot Files use the copy of VMFSS.COM and \r\nother VM/386 utilities stored in the same drive and directory \r\nas the old version of the program. \r\n\r\nBefore using other custom AUTOEXEC files with the old version \r\nof VM/386, change the line:\r\n C:\\\\VMFSS.COM\r\nso the name matches the directory in which the \r\nolder VM/386 version is stored. The AUTOEXEC file will now \r\nrun the older version of VMFSS. If the wrong version of \r\nVMFSS is used, an error message will appear and you will not \r\nbe able to access your hard disk from the Virtual Machine. \r\n\r\nPRINTER SHARING\r\nDuring VM/386 installation, you will be asked if you want to \r\nshare your printer across all Virtual Machines. If you \r\nanswer yes, you will be asked which port your printer uses. \r\nIf you answer LPT1, for example, the following command will \r\nbe added to the AUTOEXEC.VM file:\r\n \\VM386\\VMLINK LPT1 \r\nThis command will automatically link the printer as a \r\nfloating device to all Virtual Machines which boot up using \r\nAUTOEXEC.VM (the default AUTOEXEC file). \r\n\r\nCOMPAQ AND MICRONICS MOTHERBOARD USERS - /X OPTION\r\nSome Compaq and Compaq-compatible machines reserve 384K of \r\nRAM for use by Compaq DOS and the ROM BIOS. This causes \r\nVM/386 to only find 1664K available out of the 2M of RAM in \r\nyour machine. For all Compaq 386 machines except the Deskpro \r\n386/20, and most Micronics motherboard machines, start VM/386 \r\nas follows:\r\n CD \\VM386 \r\n VM386 [startup file name] /x \r\nThe [startup file name] is optional. The /x option makes \r\n256K of the reserved memory available for use by VM/386. The \r\n/x option is not compatible with the Compaq Deskpro 386/20 \r\nmemory cache.\r\n\r\nAUTOMATIC HARD DISK DRIVER SELECTION\r\nDuring installation, VM/386 automatically installs one of the \r\nfollowing hard disk drivers:\r\n * The VM/386 driver for the Western Digital ST-506 \r\n controller (used in the IBM PC/AT and many other \r\n computers). \r\n * The INT 13 BIOS driver for ESDI, SCSI, and other \r\n controllers. \r\nIn the following cases, the wrong hard disk driver may be \r\nselected:\r\n * A disk cache was active during installation. This may \r\n cause the INT 13 BIOS driver to be installed when the \r\n driver for the WD ST-506 should have been used. This \r\n results in poor performance. \r\n * The Adaptec RLL controller is in use; VM/386 will install \r\n the WD ST-506 driver. This may result in errors in \r\n writing to the hard disk. \r\nEither of these problems can be resolved by installing the \r\ncorrect driver. Exit VM/386 if it is running; then go to a \r\nDOS prompt and enter:\r\n CD\\VM386\r\n VMSETHD\r\nYou will be asked whether you want automatic hard disk driver \r\nselection. Type: \r\n N \r\nto respond \"No\". \r\n\r\nA list with the two available controllers will appear. Type: \r\n 1 \r\nto select the VM/386 driver for the Western Digital ST-506 \r\ncontroller. Or type: \r\n 2 \r\nto select the INT 13 BIOS driver. \r\nOnce the correct driver is installed, start VM/386 and retry \r\nthe operation which failed previously. \r\n\r\n ENHANCEMENTS FOR VERSION 1.2\r\n\r\n1) VM/386 now supports hard disk partitions larger than 32M \r\n under the following products:\r\n * PC DOS 4.0\r\n * Compaq DOS 3.31\r\n * Speedstor (by Storage Dimensions) versions through \r\n 5.11\r\n * Disk Manager (by Ontrak Systems) versions through 3.10 \r\n\r\n2) VM/386 now supports access to 3COM networks. Read \r\n Appendix D in the manual for complete directions on how \r\n to access a 3COM network from within a Virtual Machine.\r\n\r\n3) The printer can now be shared among Virtual Machines. \r\n The printer (LPT) port can be linked as a floating device \r\n to any or all Virtual Machines. During installation, you \r\n will be asked if you want to automatically link the \r\n printer to all Virtual Machines as a floating device. \r\n\r\n4) New Profiles are included with VM/386. The new Profile \r\n names use the letters \"PC\", as in \"640K_PC\", in place of \r\n the letters \"STD\" which were used in previous VM/386 \r\n versions. Also included is the COMM Profile, which should \r\n be used to create a Virtual Machine for modem \r\n communications, accessing a network, or other \r\n communications tasks. The COMM Profile ensures that the \r\n Virtual Machine will have first access to interrupts (the \r\n Queue is set to 1 and the Priority is set to 1) and that \r\n the Virtual Machine will not be suspended by the System \r\n Resource Monitor (SRM Check set to No). \r\n\r\n5) The Alt-SysRq SysRq key combination allows direct access \r\n to the next Virtual Machine in the VM List without \r\n accessing the Switcher. If two Virtual Machines are \r\n active, for example, and VM1 is in the foreground, do the \r\n following to bring VM2 onscreen:\r\n * Hold down the Alt key.\r\n * Press SysRq.\r\n * Press SysRq again.\r\n * Release the Alt key.\r\n VM2 will come to the foreground. Repeat the same \r\n keystrokes to go to the next Virtual Machine, which in \r\n this case is VM1. \r\n Note that the Virtual Machine Manager is not \"in the loop\" \r\n and can't be accessed via Alt-SysRq SysRq. Use (Alt) \r\n SysRq to bring up the Switcher and access the Virtual \r\n Machine Manager. \r\n\r\n6) CPU performance has been further improved. CPU overhead \r\n for memory-intensive calculations is now only about 2% \r\n (had been 4-5%).\r\n\r\n COMPATIBILITY LIST\r\n\r\nCOMPATIBLE SYSTEMS\r\nVM/386 has been tested on the following computers or boards:\r\n * Compaq Deskpro 386 * Intel Inboard 386/AT \r\n * Compaq Deskpro 386/20 * Orchid Jet 386 board \r\n * Compaq Portable 386 * AOX Master 386 motherboard \r\n * Everex System 386 * Intel motherboard \r\n * IBM PS/2 Model 70 * Everex System 386 \r\n * IBM PS/2 Model 80 * Intel motherboard \r\n * Kaypro 386 * Micronics motherboard \r\n * Multitech (Acer) 1100 * Wedge Tech. motherboard\r\n * PC's Limited 386-16 \r\n * Siemens PCD-3T \r\n * Tandy Model 4000 \r\nVM/386 also supports close compatibles of the computers and \r\nboards listed above. \r\n\r\nVM/386 does not support the Toshiba T5100.\r\n\r\nSome implementations of the 80387 math coprocessor can't be \r\nreset dynamically, as required to successfully multitask \r\nprograms which use it. If problems occur, only run one \r\ncoprocessor-dependent program at a time under VM/386. \r\n\r\nVIDEO ADAPTERS\r\nVM/386 supports MDA (monochrome text), Hercules, CGA, EGA, \r\nand VGA video adapters. The 8514/A and PGC video controllers \r\ncan be used to support a second monitor running a single \r\nVirtual Machine, as described in the manual. \r\n\r\nVM/386 does not support the ATI Wondercard and ATI \r\nProfessional VGA graphics cards. \r\n\r\nVM/386 does not support some high-resolution monitors such as \r\nthe Wyse 700 and the Zenith Flat Tension Mask (FTM) monitor. \r\nVM/386 has compatibility problems with the Zenith 449 video \r\ncard on the Zenith 386:\r\n * The Zenith 449 video card supports certain VGA functions \r\n but not others, leading to problems with some graphics \r\n software and with VM/386. It is possible to lock the card \r\n into EGA mode by resetting its jumpers, which allows \r\n VM/386 to run successfully. Check the 449 card's \r\n documentation for instructions.\r\n * Normally, when VM/386 is terminated it reboots the \r\n computer it's running on. On the Zenith 386 with the 449 \r\n card locked into EGA mode, exiting from VM/386 causes a \r\n \"slushware error\" in reloading the card's low-level video \r\n software (\"slushware\"). Turn the computer off, then back \r\n on, to continue.\r\n\r\nHARD DISKS\r\nVM/386 supports the following formatting programs which allow \r\npartitions greater than 32 Mb in size:\r\n * PC DOS 4.0\r\n * Compaq DOS 3.31\r\n * Speedstor (by Storage Dimensions) versions through 5.11\r\n * Disk Manager (by Ontrak Systems) versions through 3.10 \r\nVM/386 does not support Golden Bow or Priam disk formatting \r\nsoftware. If your hard disk is formatted with one of these \r\nprograms, you will need to reformat it using supported \r\nformatting software before running VM/386. (For information \r\non hard disk setup, see the Installation Notes.)\r\n\r\nThere are two problems which may occur with Wyse DOS Version \r\n3.21:\r\n * The version of DOS is unable to read the VM/386 \r\n distribution disk, or other disks formatted under PC-DOS \r\n Version 3.3. \r\n * Though VM/386 is installed successfully, it is impossible \r\n to create a Virtual Machine. \r\nIf either of these problems occurs, your copy of Wyse DOS \r\n3.21 is incompatible with VM/386. \r\n\r\n OTHER NOTES\r\n\r\nEGA, EGA+, AUTOSWITCHING VIDEO CARDS\r\nIf your video card has autoswitching capabilities, you may \r\nget a blank screen when you switch Virtual Machines. This is \r\nbecause some cards switch modes when VM/386 switches screens. \r\nTo solve this problem, disable autoswitching; this should \r\nmake switching work correctly, while not otherwise affecting \r\nyour software programs. See the video card's manual for \r\ndirections on how to disable autoswitching.\r\n\r\nDISK CACHE SIZE\r\nOn the Create VM/386 Startup File screen (1.6), VM/386 allows \r\nyou to specify and save to disk a Startup File with a disk \r\ncache up to 4 Mb in size. The largest disk cache which this \r\nversion of VM/386 will actually support is 1.4 Mb. If a disk \r\ncache larger than 1.4 Mb is specified, a memory allocation \r\nconflict may occur during initialization of VM/386.
