"desc_text": ";-------------------------------------------------------------------------\r\n; This is the README.TXT file for SMARTCD CD-ROM cache device driver\r\n; \r\n; (C) Copyright FarStone corp. 1993, All rights reserved.\r\n;-------------------------------------------------------------------------\r\n\r\nPreface :\r\n=========\r\n\r\n Have you an experience running MS-Windows(TM) without disk caching drivers\r\n(without SMARTDRV command in AUTOEXEC.BAT) ? What a terrible hard work for\r\nhard disk in this situation ? \r\n\r\n How about your CD-ROM drives ?\r\n\r\n It seems to be over loaded when running MS-Windows (TM) multimedia \r\napplications or titles (such as Microsoft(R) BookShelf(TM)). \r\n\r\n SMARTCD (TM) CD-ROM cache device driver is target to resolve this problem.\r\nSMARTCD can easily increase CD-ROM performance by 2 to more than 30 times\r\nfaster, and free as much available conventional memory as without it.\r\n\r\n\r\nSystem requirement :\r\n====================\r\n\r\n To get the benefit from SMARTCD, you need:\r\n\r\n 1. A CD-ROM drive compliant to MPC (Multimedia PC)\r\n\r\n 2. At least 256 KB of extended memory.\r\n\r\n\r\nSMARTCD Overview\r\n================\r\n\r\n SMARTCD is a professional and experienced cache device driver for CD-ROM \r\ndevices. It will improve CD-ROM performance from 2 to more than 30 times\r\nfaster than without it dependent on applications. (please refer to \"test\r\nreport section\" in this file).\r\n\r\n In addition to good performance improvement, SMARTCD also has many\r\nother smart features. SMARTCD has an integrated installation program,\r\nwell test with existing hardware, software and related systems,\r\nhas on-line help, device driver status and statistics report program,\r\nintelligent memory allocation strategy, easy to unload from system,\r\nand plus all above, SMARTCD may incredibly use none extra conventional \r\nmemory of system !\r\n\r\n\r\nSMARTCD features :\r\n==================\r\n\r\n 1. Dramatically improve CD-ROM device performance from 2 to 30 \r\n times faster.\r\n\r\n 2. SMARTCD is a professional, experienced product and support the\r\n largest cache size up to 64 MB.\r\n\r\n 3. Command line startup, with unload capability.\r\n\r\n 4. Integrated with install, status check, unload, on-line help, \r\n and others.\r\n\r\n 5. Automatically detect and allocate memory.\r\n\r\n 6. Very small and efficient resident code (TSR), at least 7 KB.\r\n\r\n 7. Can configured to eat nothing of extra conventional memory.\r\n\r\n\r\nInstallation\r\n============\r\n\r\n It is quite easy to install the SMARTCD CD-ROM device driver, run next\r\nat DOS command prompt :\r\n\r\n > SMARTCD /SETUP\r\n\r\n Follow the setup program to install SMARTCD onto your system. If you want\r\nto change the configuration of SMARTCD, you can run setup program again,\r\nSMARTCD setup program will keep track of your current setting and setup the\r\nnew configuration.\r\n\r\n Note : You have to reboot to make the new setup active.\r\n\r\n\r\nSMARTCD command syntax :\r\n========================\r\n\r\n SMARTCD has the following command line syntax :\r\n\r\n 1. > SMARTCD /SETUP : setup onto your machine.\r\n\r\n 2. > SMARTCD [dddddd]: Start SMARTCD (TSR) and use [dddddd] KB of memory\r\n as cache, ddddd from 256 to 65535 KB. [dddddd] is \r\n option, see note for detail description.\r\n\r\n 3. > SMARTCD /UN : unload from memory, free all memory used by SMARTCD\r\n to system.\r\n\r\n 4. > SMARTCD [/? | /ST | /ON | /OFF | MAX | MIN]\r\n\r\n /? or /ST : Help or show SMARTCD driver status\r\n\r\n /ON or /OFF : Enable or Disable SMARTCD cache driver\r\n\r\n /MAX or /MIN : Cache all or directory only, Default is MAX if \r\n cache buffer size > 512 KB\r\n\r\n Note : SMARTCD is started by command line \"SMARTCD [dddddd]\", where ddddd\r\n size is optional, it tells SMARTCD allocate how much of system\r\n XMS memory for the CD-ROM buffer. The larger the buffer the better\r\n CD-ROM performance gained. The size can from 256 to 65535 (256 KB to\r\n 64 MB). If you do not specify dddddd, SMARTCD will use the following\r\n table to allocate system RAM (XMS RAM) as cache buffer.\r\n\r\n\r\n Free XMS memory SMARTCD allocates\r\n ----------------------------------------------------------------\r\n less than 256 KB none (fail to load)\r\n less than 1024 KB allocate all\r\n\r\n > = 1024 KB allocate half of available\r\n with maximum buffer size = 2048.\r\n\r\n Note : If you want to allocate cache buffer size larger than 2048 KB, you\r\n have to specify the [dddddd]. SMARTCD will allocate maximum of 2048\r\n KB without this parameter.\r\n\r\n Note : /UN unload command will free all of the memory occupied by SMARTCD,\r\n include cache buffer and program code.\r\n\r\n Note : /MAX will cache all of the data read from CD-ROM, and /MIN cache\r\n the directory information of CD-ROM only. You can change\r\n it at any time. By default, SMARTCD will use /MAX methodology\r\n except cache buffer size less than 512 KB.\r\n\r\n\r\nFree more conventional memory\r\n=============================\r\n\r\n After you have installed the SMARTCD CD-ROM device driver, you can release\r\nthe buffer allocate for MSCDEX.EXE (TM). There is an \"/M:number\" parameter\r\nwith MSCDEX.EXE command line. The \"number\" means to allocate how many 2 KB\r\nbuffers for MSCDEX, which allocates memory from conventional memory \r\n(under 640KB) and that decreases your free conventional memory. In general\r\nthe buffers allocated are 12 (\"/M:12\"). If we install SMARTCD onto system,\r\nthen these buffers have no benefit to CD-ROM performance according to the\r\nspeed test, so actually we can decrease it to 4 without inferring performance\r\nof CD-ROM drives if SMARTCD is loaded.\r\n\r\n If we reduce the number to 4 then we can free 8 buffer space (16 KB)\r\nof conventional memory from MSCDEX. We recommend to update the MSCDEX buffer\r\nnumber to 4 if you need more conventional memory. Next is an example MSCDEX\r\nand SMARTCD commands in AUTOEXEC.BAT after you installed SMARTCD and\r\nchanged MSCDEX buffer number to 4:\r\n\r\n in AUTOEXEC.BAT\r\n\r\n C:\\DOS\\MSCDEX.EXE /M:4 /D:SONY_000\r\n C:\\SMARTCD.EXE 1024\r\n\r\n\r\nPerformance test report :\r\n=========================\r\n\r\n Please find detailed performance test report in file \"report.txt\"\r\n\r\n\r\nSMARTCD developer :\r\n===================\r\n\r\n SMARTCD project leader had been given an excellent comment for his disk \r\ncache driver developed for a famous world wide PC company in 1988. In the\r\nLanTime NSTL test reported in 1990, his cache driver was outstanding the\r\nother competitors, such as Microsoft SMARTDRV, and Multisoft PCKwirk cache.\r\n\r\n\r\nTechnical highlights :\r\n======================\r\n\r\n Intelligent cache method used, which include the read-ahead, data hashing\r\ntechnology, priority data handling, and many others.\r\n\r\n\r\nNotes: \r\n======\r\n\r\nSMARTCD is a trademark of Far Stone Technology Corp.
