Identify the exact name, processor speed and type, amount of RAM,\r\n     amount of secondary RAM cache, if any, hard disk size, type of hard disk\r\n     controller, and size of hardware hard disk cache, if any, of the PC used\r\n     for the test (e.g., WXY Corp. Model 466 with 66-MHz Intel 486DX2-66 CPU,\r\n     8MB of RAM, 64KB RAM cache, 200MB hard disk, IDE controller, and no\r\n     hardware disk cache).\r\n\r\n     C.   Identify the exact video adapter name, amount and type of RAM on it,\r\n     video driver name and date, and monitor refresh rate that produced the\r\n     result (e.g., XYZ Corp. XYZVideo adapter with 2MB VRAM, XYZ.DRV Version\r\n     1.1 driver dated 11 Feb 1993, and a monitor refresh rate of 72 Hz).\r\n\r\n     D.   Identify the operating system version (e.g., MS-DOS 5.0), size and\r\n     type of software disk cache, if any (e.g., SMARTDRV 2MB cache), video\r\n     resolution and color depth (e.g., 800 by 600 pixels with 256 colors),\r\n     and any other special conditions used to achieve the result (e.g., disk\r\n     compression utility ABC Version 1.0 enabled).\r\n\r\n     E.   State that all products used in the test were shipping versions\r\n     available to the general public.\r\n\r\n     F.   State that the test was performed without independent\r\n     verification by ZIFF.\r\n\r\n     G.   Follow proper trademark usage and acknowledge ZIFF's trademark\r\n     rights (e.g., \"[ ] achieved a 4.5 million Graphics WinMark(tm) test\r\n     score. This Agreement, including the\r\nlimited warranty and limited liability, shall be construed, interpreted and\r\ngoverned under New York law.\r\n\r\nINTRODUCTION\r\n\r\nWinBench\r\nVersion 3.11\r\nRelease date: February 1993\r\n\r\nWinBench(tm) is the PC Magazine Windows Benchmark suite.  It provides\r\ncomprehensive graphics benchmark tests using the Windows Graphical Device\r\nInterface (GDI) and selected high-level user interface functions. Version 3.1,\r\nthe fourth major release of WinBench, added tests of hard disk subsystems.\r\nVersion 3.11 is a maintenance release.\r\n\r\nWHAT YOU NEED TO RUN WINBENCH\r\n\r\nTo run WinBench, you need to have the following hardware and software.\r\n\r\nWinBench requires:\r\n\r\n      . A PC that runs Windows 3.0 or 3.1\r\n      . A  graphics adapter and Windows driver capable of a resolution of at\r\n\tleast 640x480 pixels.  Correct operation and accurate results from\r\n\trunning WinBench are not guaranteed if the tested graphics resolution\r\n\tis less than either 640 pixels wide or 480 pixels high.\r\n      . About 300,000 bytes available on your hard disk for the WinBench\r\n\tsoftware itself\r\n      . About 9 million bytes of available space on your hard disk for a\r\n\ttemporary file to run the WinBench disk tests, and to save the results\r\n\tof any WinBench tests that you run.  If your hard disk does not have\r\n\tenough space for the work file, WinBench will not run the hard disk\r\n\ttests.\r\n      . MS-DOS Release 3.1 or later (Release 5.0 recommended)\r\n      . Microsoft Windows 3.0 or later (Release 3.1 or later recommended),\r\n\trunning in either Standard or Enhanced mode.\r\n\r\nBACKGROUND\r\n\r\nWinBench 3.11 and the Graphics WINMARK reflect how the leading Windows\r\napplications use the Windows environment.  We used Microsoft Test to capture\r\nrepeatable scripts that represent typical use of eight Windows applications\r\nwhich are market leaders in their respective product categories.  Then, we ran\r\nthe scripts on standard configurations using Microsoft's Logger and Profiler\r\ntools to record information about the Windows functions used by these\r\napplications.  Finally, we analyzed the log and profile data to construct a\r\ncomposite picture of the most frequently used GDI functions and the\r\ncharacteristics of these functions.\r\n\r\nZiff-Davis Publishing Company is committed to provide the PC industry with\r\nhigh quality state-of-the-art benchmark software.  The Ziff-Davis Benchmark\r\nOperation carries out the on-going mission to develop benchmarks by\r\ninstrumenting and analyzing how major Windows applications use the Windows\r\nenvironment, using the best profiling and instrumentation tools available.\r\nSubsequent releases of WinBench may reflect adjustments in both the functions\r\nused and their weights, depending on the results of the analysis.\r\n\r\nINSTALLING WINBENCH\r\n\r\nWinBench is distributed as a pair of files: this README file and a\r\nself-extracting executable file, WINB311.EXE.  The self-extracting file\r\ncontains WINBENCH.EXE, the benchmark program itself, and WINBENCH.HLP,\r\nthe on-line help for WinBench.\r\n\r\nYou will probably want to create a directory that contains the WinBench files,\r\nand that will contain all of the report files generated by WinBench.  For\r\nexample, you could use the following DOS commands to create the WINBENCH\r\ndirectory on your C: drive, and to change to that directory:\r\n\r\n\tMD C:\\WINBENCH\r\n\tCD C:\\WINBENCH\r\n\r\nThen, execute the self-extracting WINB31 program to install all of the\r\nfiles from the WinBench diskette.
