Questions and Answers\r\n 3. Hardware \r\n Tape Drives\r\n 4. Incompatibilities\r\n 5. Limitations\r\n\r\n\r\n R E C O M M E N D A T I O N S\r\n\r\n 1. Symantec strongly suggests after you do your first two backups, \r\n you use the Compare function from the main menu, to compare the \r\n contents of the backup diskettes or tape to the source data.\r\n \r\n You should also use the Compare function, if you have made a change\r\n to your hardware configuration. This will ensure the integrity of\r\n the backup set. Although we try to test on as many different\r\n computers and software as possible, we cannot test all possible\r\n combinations. This is why it is essential for you to perform at\r\n least two Compares. This confirms that Norton Backup is running\r\n properly on your computer. \r\n \r\n 2. If you have a computer with 386-33MHz or faster processor, use the\r\n following configuration:\r\n Program Level Advanced\r\n Compression Save Space High\r\n\r\n 3. Stacker and QEMM users see the software section.\r\n\r\n\r\n 4. If you do have problems, try booting your computer with a DOS\r\n system disk that doesn't have a CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file and\r\n see if the problem still occurs.\r\n\r\n 5. Check the Questions and Answers section of this file for a solution\r\n to the problem.\r\n\r\n If you are still having problems call Symantec Technical Support at\r\n\r\n (310) 449-4900.\r\n\r\n\r\n Q U E S T I O N S A N D A N S W E R S\r\n\r\n 1. Q: Norton Backup appears to lock-up during the backup, but it\r\n passed the Compatibility test.\r\n A: Try setting the compression to off or save space high these are\r\n Advanced Program Level options. This is sometimes an indication\r\n of a software conflict with a memory manager you have installed \r\n on your system.\r\n\r\n\f 2. Q: Why do I get the message \"Diskette in drive A is defective\"? \r\n A: This could be either a software or hardware conflict. On\r\n rare occasions a disk drive will not be able to handle the\r\n Norton Backup's proprietary format. Try the following things: \r\n 1. Deselect the Proprietary Format option in the Backup To\r\n menu. \r\n 2. Remove all TSRs and optional device drivers from memory\r\n by booting your computer with a DOS system disk that doesn't\r\n have a CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file and see if the\r\n problem\r\n still occurs. If these two things don't work--\r\n 3. Set Norton Backup to use low speed DMA. \r\n\r\n 3. Q: What do the messages \"Correcting Bad Disk\" and \"Cannot recover \r\n data from damaged diskette using Error Correction\" mean \r\n when attempting to restore or compare a backup set.\r\n A: There may be a software conflict, try removing all TSRs \r\n and optional device drivers.\r\n\r\n 4. Q: What can I do if I get the messages \"Files do not match\" or\r\n \"Incorrect checksum for file\"?\r\n \r\n A: Try setting Norton Backup to use low speed DMA. If this\r\n does not resolve the problem, then try removing all TSRs and\r\n optional device drivers.\r\n\r\n 5. Q: Why doesn't Norton Backup allow me to change any of the\r\n options in the program?\r\n A: You need to press the <spacebar> in order to select any of\r\n the options, such as Program Level, instead of the <ENTER>\r\n key.\r\n This will place a dot in the selection box next to the chosen\r\n option. You can also use the hot keys (highlighted letters)\r\n to select items.\r\n\r\n 6. Q: Is there an easy way to select/deselect All Files for either\r\n Backup or Restore without going into Select Files and doing it\r\n manually?\r\n A: With the logical drive highlighted in the Backup From/Restore\r\n Files window, press the <spacebar> or click the mouse\r\n (double-clicking with the left button or single-clicking with\r\n the right) to toggle between All Files and no files.\r\n\r\n 7. Q: I thought I backed up my files to floppy disk, however when\r\n I look at the floppy with DIR, the files that were backed up\r\n do not appear on the screen. Where are they?\r\n \r\n A: The files cannot be retrieved through DOS; this can only be\r\n done through the Restore function in the program. When Norton\r\n Backup writes to a floppy, it creates a component file on the\r\n disk. The filename of this file is the same as the catalog\r\n name, with the extension that corresponds to the number of the\r\n floppy in the backup set (e.g. CC10415.001 is the first\r\n diskette created on April 15). The actual files are packed\r\n into the data area of the component file.\r\n To verify that the backup was successful, use the Compare\r\n function from the main menu. You can run a compare immediately\r\n following the backup. \r\n\r\n\f 8. Q: Why did Norton Backup require fewer floppy diskettes for a\r\n backup than what the program indicated it was going to need?\r\n A: Norton Backup's estimate of how many disks are required for\r\n backup is a maximum based on the assumption of no data\r\n compression. It would take a long time to estimate accurately\r\n the amount of disk space saved with data compression, because\r\n it depends on the nature of the data being compressed.\r\n\r\n 9. Q: I told the program to back up drive D, but it keeps backing\r\n up drive C. What's wrong?\r\n A: The DEFAULT.SET file is defined initially to back up all files\r\n on the C drive. You will need to deselect the files for\r\n the C drive by pressing the <spacebar> on the line that says\r\n -C- All Files, in the Backup From box. Think of the Backup \r\n From box as a list of drives to be backed up. In this case,\r\n you will notice that next to the drive letter C it will be\r\n either All Files or Some Files. The highlight bar allows you\r\n to edit the list of your drives and therefore it does not\r\n choose the drive to be backed up.\r\n\r\n 10. Q: The Backup program doesn't seem to be accepting my Includes\r\n or Excludes. What am I doing wrong?\r\n A: You have selected some of the files/directories from the\r\n Select Files tree with the space bar or mouse. These are \r\n manual file/directory selections and will take priority over\r\n the Include/Exclude list. These directories should be in a\r\n different color than unselected directories (usually red). To\r\n use the Include/Exclude list, you need to tell Norton Backup\r\n that you do not want to manually override the Include/Exclude\r\n list. To do this:\r\n 1. Highlighting the red or yellow directory(s) on the\r\n Select Files screen and pressing the <Alt-spacebar> keys.\r\n Once this is done the Include/Exclude list is applied to\r\n all non-red or yellow directories.\r\n 2. Make whatever manual selections are necessary (these will\r\n override the Includes/Excludes if there is a conflict).\r\n Or\r\n 1. Start all over again by deselecting all the files on the\r\n drive by highlighting the drive letter in the Backup From\r\n list box, by pressing the <spacebar> on the appropriate\r\n drive letter.\r\n\r\n 11. Q: Why would Norton Backup indicate that a restore is complete\r\n when it did not restore any files (as shown by no check marks\r\n next to the filenames in the top right corner of the Restore\r\n screen) and it only took a few seconds for this entire process\r\n to finish?\r\n A: Norton Backup is probably trying to restore some older files\r\n over some newer files (for example, restoring to fix a\r\n corrupted database).\r\n 1. Configure Norton Backup to the Advanced Restore program\r\n level.\r\n 2. Choose Options followed by Overwrite Files.\r\n 3. Change this option to Always Overwrite\r\n Or \r\n Delete the unwanted files on the hard drive first.\r\n\r\n\f 12. Q: Why is there a dot to the left of the filenames in the\r\n Select Files window instead of a checkmark after selecting the\r\n files to be backed up or to be restored?\r\n A: The dot means the file has been deselected. If you are \r\n performing an incremental backup, the dot indicates that you\r\n have tried to select a file that has not changed since the \r\n last Full or Incremental backup. Q: I'm trying to restore to a different computer and Norton\r\n Backup says there are no catalogs found, or it tells me\r\n that the incorrect disk has been inserted into the drive.\r\n Why would this happen?\r\n A: After performing a backup, a catalog will be created on both\r\n the hard disk where the backup was done as well as on the last\r\n disk of the floppy backup set, or at the end of the tape.\r\n \r\n In order to transfer this catalog to the new hard disk:\r\n 1. Choose Catalog\r\n 2. Highlight the desired catalog and press the <spacebar> to\r\n select it.\r\n 3. Choose Load to make it the current catalog.\r\n\r\n You could also use the restore without a catalog feature to\r\n restore the data. This is easier and quicker than using a\r\n catalog, when you want to restore a whole backup set.\r\n\r\n 14. Q: Norton Backup is not using Norton Disk Doctor to scan the disk \r\n before backing up, even though I selected that option.\r\n A: Norton Backup looks for the NU environment variable to find\r\n the Norton Disk Doctor. You will need to add \"SET\r\n NU=C:\\NORTON\" to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Replace the\r\n \"C:\\NORTON\" with the correct path name to Norton Utilities on\r\n your hard disk. \r\n\r\n\r\n\f H A R D W A R E \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n T A P E D R I V E S\r\n \r\n 1. If you want to schedule regular monthly backups, schedule\r\n them for the 1st day of the month. The following programs have \r\n been found to disable the scheduler: Paradox 3.5, Borland C++ 2.0,\r\n WordPerfect Office, and DOS PRINT. When running Windows or\r\n Desqview the scheduler will wait until you exit that environment\r\n before making a backup.\r\n\r\n Norton Antivirus\r\n\r\n Norton Backup does not backup \"NAV_.SYS\" and \"NAV&.SYS\". Norton\r\n Antivirus is protecting these files and must be disabled to allow\r\n backing up of these files.\r\n\r\n Solution #1:\r\n Add NAV_.SYS and NAV&.SYS to the Copy Protected Files list found\r\n in the Special box in the Select Files screen.\r\n \r\n This will tell Norton Backup not to attempt to backup these\r\n files. In the event you need to restore NAV_.SYS or NAV&.SYS you\r\n can do so from the original Norton AntiVirus disks. The benefits\r\n from this solution are that unattended backups are possible,\r\n Norton AntiVirus is active, and you do not need to remember to\r\n disable Norton AntiVirus.\r\n\r\n Solution #2:\r\n To temporarily disable Norton AntiVirus, reboot the computer, press\r\n and hold down the two SHIFT keys after you hear the first beep from\r\n the computer. A message should display stating that Norton\r\n AntiVirus has not been loaded. You may now release the keys and \r\n make your backup. Remember to reboot again to reactivate Norton\r\n AntiVirus. The benefit of this solution is that you have a backup\r\n that contains all of the Norton AntiVirus files that were selected\r\n for backup.\r\n\r\n The NAV.SYS contained in versions of Norton AntiVirus prior to\r\n 2.0 are not compatible with NSCHED. If\r\n Norton Backup does not have sufficient memory for drive logging,\r\n end users need to use DOS \"SUBST\" or NETWORK \"MAP\" to partition\r\n the drive they want to backup. Norton Backup will allocate 64KB\r\n for logging 2040 directories. If there is insufficient memory,\r\n Norton Backup will allocate 32KB for 1020 directories. \r\n\r\n Each tape volume table can hold 256 entries. This means that\r\n Norton Backup can save 256 backup sets to a single tape, if the\r\n save catalog to tape option is turned off. If you turn on the\r\n save catalog to tape option, then the maximum number of backups\r\n to a single tape is 128."
