In addition, Speedrive uses a small amount of\r\nconventional or UMB memory to manage the cache. The management\r\nrequires more memory as the cache size increases. On systems\r\nwith 8 MB or more of RAM, the cache may be quite large and its\r\nmanagement may use more memory than desirable. To reset the\r\ncache size, add appropriate switches to Speedrive's installation\r\nline. Please see the User's Guide or on-line help for further\r\ninformation.\r\n\r\nUPPER MEMORY OPTIMIZATION\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nAfter installing Speedrive, it is important to reoptimize your\r\nupper memory area. Many memory managers provide tools that\r\nperform this task automatically.\r\n\r\n If you use: Run:\r\n ----------- --------\r\n MS-DOS 6 MEMMAKER\r\n QEMM OPTIMIZE\r\n 386MAX MAXIMIZE\r\n\r\nUSING SPEEDRIVE WITH COMPRESSED DRIVES\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nWhen caching compressed volumes, Speedrive caches only host\r\n(uncompressed) drives. Compressed volumes are actually hidden\r\nfiles that reside on host drives. By caching the host drive,\r\nSpeedrive caches all files on that drive, including the\r\ncompressed volume file.\r\n\r\nCOMMAND LINE CONFIGURATION OF WINDOWS CACHE SIZE\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nWhen configuring cache size from the command line, separate DOS\r\nand Windows cache sizes with a comma. The amount before the\r\ncomma is the DOS cache size. The number following the comma is\r\nthe Windows cache size. For example, if you want a 4 MB DOS\r\ncache and a 2 MB Windows cache, use the following syntax:\r\n\r\n C:\\SPEEDRV\\SPEEDRV.EXE /INSTALL /EXT=4096,2048\r\n\r\nCACHE SIZE FOR CD-ROMS\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nSPEEDRIVE greatly improves CD-ROM performance. Below is a\r\nbreakdown of cache size and approximate speed gain.\r\n\r\n CACHE SIZE % PERFORMANCE INCREASE\r\n ---------- ----------------------\r\n <= 1 MB 0%\r\n 1 - 3 MB 1,000%\r\n > 3 MB to 4,000%\r\n\r\nSPEEDRIVE IN NORTON UTILITIES SYSINFO\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nNorton Utilities SYSINFO lists Speedrive as \"SMARTDrive (Disk\r\nCache)\" in its \"Device Driver\" report. Speedrive masquerades as\r\nSmartdrive for compatibility. In addition, SYSINFO calls\r\nSpeedrive NCACHE.EXE in the \"DOS Memory Block\" and \"TSR Program\"\r\nreports.\r\n\r\n\r\n TROUBLESHOOTING AND COMPATIBILITY\r\n ---------------------------------\r\n\r\n\r\nLOCKUPS USING QEMM 7.0x or EMM386 from MS-DOS 6\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you receive Exception 12 or 13 errors from QEMM version 7.0x\r\nor lockups running EMM386.EXE with the HIGHSCAN parameter,\r\nexclude the monochrome video region (B000-B0FF). These managers\r\naggressively use upper memory block areas and may access\r\nB000-B0FF without claiming it. The system and Speedrive may see\r\nthis area as available and attempt simultaneous access. Below\r\nlies an example CONFIG.SYS memory exclusion:\r\n\r\n DEVICE=C:\\QEMM\\QEMM386.SYS RAM NOEMS X=B000-B7FF\r\n\r\nPROBLEMS RUNNING ASSIST\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you receive the ASSIST error, \"Assist requires version 4.05\r\nor later,\" check your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to make sure that\r\nSpeedrive installs before any program launches. If the command\r\nto start Windows (WIN), or any other program, lies before\r\nSPEEDRV /INSTALL in AUTOEXEC.BAT, Speedrive can't load until you\r\nexit the program. You can move SPEEDRV /INSTALL by running\r\nSDSETUP and selecting \"Move Norton Speedrive installation line\r\nin AUTOEXEC.BAT. Alternately, you can modify AUTOEXEC.BAT using\r\na text editor.\r\n\r\nDISK CHANGE USING ADAPTEC DRIVERS WITH SOME CD-ROM DRIVES\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nWhen running an Adaptec driver with some CD-ROM drives, such as\r\nHitachi or NEC CD-ROMs, Speedrive does not receive proper disk\r\nchange notification. If you change CDs and continue to receive\r\nthe first disk's directory after refresh, add the CHANGEFIX\r\nswitch to the SDCDEXT driver in CONFIG.SYS. Reboot and your\r\nproblem will disappear. For example:\r\n\r\n DEVICE =C:\\SPEEDRV\\SDCDEXT.EXE /D:MSCD001 /CHANGEFIX\r\n\r\nMSCDEX 2.21\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nMany versions of MSCDEX 2.21 exist and some are incompatible\r\nwith Speedrive. It is difficult to determine which version you\r\nhave because the file dates, times, and sizes are identical. \r\nHowever, you can use PKZIP's CRC32 to identify the version by\r\ntyping the following:\r\n\r\n PKZIP JUNK.ZIP MSCDEX.EXE <ENTER>\r\n PKUNZIP JUNK.ZIP -V <ENTER>\r\n\r\nIf the screen reads:\r\nMSCDEX.EXE 25431 02-04-92 2:21am CRC32 = EB5CEF4\r\nupdate the driver.\r\n\r\nIf the screen reads:\r\nMSCDEX.EXE 25431 02-04-92 2:21am CRC32 = EB7846D3\r\nthe driver is fine.\r\n\r\nThere may be other versions of MSCDEX 2.21 that we have not\r\ntested. If your CRC value is different, consider upgrading to\r\nMS-DOS 6.0x. MS-DOS 6.0x comes with MSCDEX 2.22. This driver\r\nis up to date and functions properly.\r\n\r\nEMM386.EXE\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you use EMM386.EXE as your memory manager, load Speedrive\r\nfrom the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. EMM386.EXE hampers Speedrive's\r\nability to load itself into upper memory when loading Speedrive\r\nthrough the CONFIG.SYS file. If you decide to leave Speedrive\r\nin CONFIG.SYS, use EMM386.EXE's DEVICEHIGH command. For example:\r\n\r\n DEVICE=C:\\DOS\\HIMEM.SYS\r\n DEVICE=C:\\DOS\\EMM386.EXE NOEMS\r\n DOS=HIGH,UMB\r\n DEVICEHIGH=C:\\SPEEDRV\\SPEEDRV.EXE /INSTALL\r\n\r\nQEMM 6.00 STEALTH MODE\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nThe Norton Speedrive is completely compatible with QEMM 6.01+\r\nand QEMM 7.0x Stealth Mode. However, QEMM version 6.00's\r\nWINSTLTH.VXD does not allow Speedrive to multitask in Window's\r\n386 Enhanced Mode, which degrades cache performance. \r\nWINSTLTH.VXD from QEMM 6.01 and later resolves the problem. \r\nQEMM 6.00 users should contact Quarterdeck Office Systems and\r\nupgrade to version 6.01 or later.\r\n\r\nAlternatively, you can download the new WINSTLTH.VXD driver from\r\nQuarterdeck's BBS. If you only upgrade this driver, use the\r\nNEWSTEALTHVXD switch to inform Speedrive that you have the\r\ncorrect VXD as follows:\r\n\r\n C:\\SPEEDRV\\SPEEDRV /INSTALL /NEWSTEALTHVXD\r\n\r\nQEMM 6.01 and later users do not need to use this switch.\r\n\r\nCENTRAL POINT ANTIVIRUS\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you have an early version of Central Point Antivirus (1.2 or\r\nearlier), upgrade to version 1.3 or later (or use Norton\r\nAntivirus instead). Early versions of Central Point Antivirus\r\nimmunize device drivers that load through CONFIG.SYS and damage\r\nthem. Such drivers include EMM386.EXE, SETVER.EXE, and\r\nSPEEDRV.EXE. If Central Point Antivirus immunizes Speedrive,\r\nyou're computer may hang at boot. In this situation, boot from a\r\nfloppy, REM Central Point Antivirus from your startup files, and\r\nreinstall Speedrive.\r\n\r\nINTEL SATISFAXTION CARD\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nIf your system locks up while using Speedrive with Intel's\r\nSatisfaxtion card, disable Speedrive's multitasking feature. \r\nSpecify MULTI=OFF on Speedrive's installation line. Note that\r\nWindows performance is not affected by this switch.\r\n\r\nADAPTEC ASPI DRIVERS AND BERNOULLIS\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nAdaptec ASPI drivers do not supply drive locking for Bernoullis.\r\n Therefore, Speedrive can't protect you if you eject the disk\r\nwhile it is writing to the disk. OAD and RCD drivers support\r\ndrive locking.\r\n\r\nCHINON CD-ROM DRIVERS\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you use the Chinon CDRVR.SYS CD-ROM driver, you may need to\r\nadd the /CDRVRFIX switch to the Speedrive installation line. If\r\nyou have more than one CD-ROM driver loaded, the /CDRVRFIX may\r\nadversely affect the non-Chinon driver. Chinon is aware of the\r\nincompatibility. Please call their technical support for\r\nfurther information.\r\n\r\nINVALID CD-ROM PARAMETERS\r\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you specify an invalid or unavailable device name in your\r\nSDCDEXT.SYS line, Speedrive does not cache any valid, available\r\nCD-ROM drives.\r\n\r\n\r\nEnd of Speedrive README.DOC"
