For easiest\r\nreading, MAXIMIZE this window by clicking the Maximize button.\r\nYou may also want to print it for future reference.\r\n Topics covered in this document include:\r\n\r\n * Norton Desktop Install and Uninstall\r\n * Norton Desktop Enhancements\r\n * Norton Desktop and Other Products\r\n * Notes and Tips\r\n * Norton Backup for Windows\r\n\r\nYou will also find a helpful question-and-answer section in\r\nAppendix A of \"Using Norton Desktop for Windows.\" If you still\r\nhave questions after reviewing Appendix A and this ReadMe file,\r\ncall Technical Support for assistance. In the United States and\r\nCanada, call (310)449-4900. In other areas, contact your local\r\ndistributor.\r\n\r\n\r\nINSTALLING NORTON DESKTOP\r\n=========================\r\n Because the Norton Desktop install program launches Windows\r\nas part of the install procedure, you should not try to install\r\nNorton Desktop from a DOS window. That is, you should not\r\ndouble-click the Program Manager \"DOS Prompt\" group item to shell\r\nto DOS. Rather, choose Run from the Program Manager File menu and\r\ntype A:INSTALL (assuming the Norton Desktop installation diskette\r\nis in drive A:). Or, exit Windows and at the DOS command-line\r\nprompt, type A:INSTALL.\r\n\r\n\r\nCREATING A NORTON DESKTOP (2.0) \"DESKTOP APPLICATIONS GROUP\"\r\n============================================================\r\n If you are installing over version 1.0 of Norton Desktop,\r\nwe retain your old Quick Access groups. This means that you \r\nwill not see your newly created Norton Desktop Applications\r\ngroup with the new program items. To convert the Norton Desktop\r\nApplications group from Program Manager, open a drive window and\r\nselect the Windows directory. Drag the NORTONDE.GRP file (it \r\ncould also be named NORTOND0.GRP, NORTOND1.GRP, etc.) from the\r\nfile pane and drop it in the Quick Access group window.\r\n\r\n\r\nIMMEDIATELY AFTER INSTALLING\r\n============================\r\n Immediately after installing Norton Desktop for Windows, be\r\nsure to run Norton AntiVirus to ensure that your computer is\r\nvirus-free. Choose Norton AntiVirus from the Tools menu, then scan all\r\nof the drives to which your computer is connected. Though you've\r\nspecified particular drives, Norton AntiVirus will also scan your\r\ncomputer's memory during the first scan of the session.\r\n\r\n\r\nUNINSTALLING NORTON DESKTOP\r\n===========================\r\n You can easily uninstall Norton Desktop, removing some or all\r\nof its related files, by launching the Norton Desktop Uninstall group\r\nitem in the Norton Desktop Applications group window. If you need\r\nadditional information about the uninstall process, start Uninstall\r\nthen consult the online help.\r\n Even if you perform a total uninstall, removing all Norton Desktop\r\nfiles, your Program Manager groups remain intact. Consequently, you\r\nmust manually delete the Norton Desktop Applications group from\r\nProgram Manager.\r\n Note that you can find information about many of the Norton\r\nDesktop files by reading CONTENTS.TXT in your Norton Desktop directory.\r\n\r\n\r\nNORTON DESKTOP ENHANCEMENTS\r\n===========================\r\n\r\nNorton AntiVirus\r\n----------------\r\n Just as you can choose to hide or show the Sleeper screen saver\r\nand the Scheduler application icons, you can also hide or show the\r\nNorton AntiVirus Popup application icon. (Application icons, remember,\r\nappear at the bottom of your desktop when a running application is\r\nminimized.) The Norton AntiVirus Popup application icon is hidden by\r\ndefault, but if you want to make it visible when Virus Intercept is\r\nrunning, follow these steps:\r\n\r\n 1. Start Norton AntiVirus. (Double-click the Norton AntiVirus tool\r\n icon or choose Norton AntiVirus from the Tools menu.)\r\n 2. Choose Intercept... from the Norton AntiVirus Options menu.\r\n 3. Check the Hide Popup Icon check box.\r\n 4. Click OK.\r\n\r\n If you run Windows in Standard mode and have 2M (megabyte) RAM\r\nor less, you should use NAV&.SYS /B as the Norton AntiVirus device\r\ndriver for best results.\r\n\r\n If you are running Norton AntiVirus with SmartDrive, you should\r\nadd the /L switch to your DEVICE=Smartdrv line in your Config.sys file.\r\n\r\n If you are running Norton AntiVirus with Stacker, you must\r\neither load the Norton AntiVirus drivers from an unstacked volume or\r\nmove the DEVICE=NAV&.SYS /B (or similar) line in your Config.sys file\r\nso that it follows the Stacker command.\r\n\r\n\r\nNorton Viewer and Graphics Files\r\n--------------------------------\r\n In addition to the bitmap image sizing explained on page 7-8\r\nof \"Using Norton Desktop for Windows,\" you can also manipulate other\r\ngraphics files in the same way (including TIF, PCX and WordPerfect\r\ngraphics files). Thus, you can copy the current view to the\r\nClipboard by pressing Ctrl+Insert. To copy a piece of the image\r\nthe size of an icon to the Clipboard (starting at the upper-left\r\ncorner of the zoom rectangle), press Shift while zooming. Press\r\nCtrl while zooming to copy the area enclosed by the rectangle to\r\nthe Clipboard. You can then paste the contents of the Clipboard\r\ninto other applications.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nNORTON DESKTOP AND OTHER PRODUCTS\r\n=================================\r\n\r\nInstalling Other Applications\r\n-----------------------------\r\n When you choose to run Norton Desktop as your shell, you (of\r\ncourse) choose not to run Program Manager as your shell. However,\r\nthere are some Windows applications that expect to find Program\r\nManager running as your shell. In many cases, though not all, these\r\nprograms are hard-coded to look for Program Manager. The applications\r\nlisted below most likely will not be able to create Norton Desktop groups\r\n(.QAG files) or group items. Rather, if Program Manager is running, they\r\nmay create Program Manager groups (.GRP files) and group items. If you\r\nexperience problems installing applications when Norton Desktop is the\r\nshell, the application is most likely looking for Program Manager. Try\r\nrunning Program Manager by choosing Run from the Norton Desktop File menu.\r\nOnce Program Manager is running, try the install again.\r\n\r\n Problem with Problem with\r\n Application NDW & Windows 3.0 NDW & Windows 3.1\r\n ----------- ----------------- -----------------\r\n Adobe Illustrator No Yes\r\n Aldus PageMaker 4.0 Yes Yes\r\n Central Point PC-Tools 7.1 Yes Yes\r\n Computer Associates DBFast(*) Yes Yes\r\n Corel Draw 2.0.1 Yes Yes\r\n Foresight Drafix-1 Windows CAD Yes Yes\r\n Informix Wingz Yes Yes\r\n Microsoft Productivity Pack(*) Yes Yes\r\n Microsoft Windows SDK Yes N/A\r\n Que RightWriter for Windows Yes Yes\r\n Software Publishing Harvard Draw Yes Yes\r\n WordPerfect for Windows Yes Yes\r\n\r\n (*)=Application always expects to find Program Manager on the shell=\r\n line in the System.ini file.\r\n\r\n In most cases, you can easily create a Norton Desktop group from\r\na Program Manager group by dragging the .GRP file from a drive window\r\nfile pane and dropping it in a Norton Desktop group window. (Drag it\r\nto the Quick Access group if you want to create a top-level group.)\r\nRefer also to pages A-8 and A-9 (\"Using Norton Desktop for Windows\")\r\nfor additional instructions. For general information about Norton\r\nDesktop groups, refer to Chapter 2 of \"Using Norton Desktop for Windows.\"\r\n\r\n\r\nNOTES AND TIPS\r\n==============\r\n\r\nCalculators\r\n-----------\r\n If you are using a Hercules monochrome display adapter, the\r\nkeys on the Tape, Financial, and Scientific calculators may be\r\ndifficult to read. If this is the case, refer to the NDWINI.TXT file\r\nfor more information.\r\n\r\n\r\nDocumentation Corrections\r\n-------------------------\r\n(Note: Unless otherwise stated, all page references are for\r\n\"Using Norton Desktop for Windows.\")\r\n\r\n Collapse All: Page 3-9 indicates that there are several menu\r\nitems you can use to manipulate the tree pane displays in a drive\r\nwindow. Though not mentioned, you can also collapse the entire tree\r\nstructure by choosing Collapse All from the Tree menu.\r\n\r\n Fonts: Pages 3-14 and 3-15 explain how to change the font in a\r\ndrive window or a Norton Viewer window. However, you cannot save the\r\nfont change (there is no Set Default button in the Font dialog box).\r\n\r\n Default Editor: Page 9-4 mentions that the Norton Desktop\r\nInstall programs asks whether you want to make Desktop Editor your\r\ndefault text editor. Not mentioned, however, is how to change your\r\ndefault editor once Norton Desktop is installed. To do so, choose\r\nDefault Editor from the Configure menu.\r\n\r\n TrueType: In addition to the raster and vector fonts mentioned\r\non page 11-3, Windows 3.1 also supports a new outline font technology\r\nlicensed to Microsoft by Apple Computer: TrueType.\r\n\r\n Sleeper default: Page 13-4 indicates that Randomizer is the\r\ndefault Sleeper screen saver module. In fact, Randomizer is not a\r\nSleeper screen saver and Screen Shuffle is the default.\r\n\r\n Macro Builder: Page 20-4 outlines the steps for recording a\r\nmacro with Macro Builder. Rather than specifying the macro filename\r\nbefore recording (as wrongly indicated in the manual), you can record\r\nthe macro before determining its filename. By default, the Recording\r\nMacro dialog box informs you that you are about to start recording a\r\nmacro. (This dialog box can be disabled.)\r\n\r\n Additional Batch Runner functions: The following functions are\r\nnot documented in Chapter 21, \"Using Batch Builder.\"\r\n\r\n FileAppend (\"from-spec\", \"[d:path]destination\")\r\n Appends one or more files to another file.\r\n Example: FileAppend (\"autoexec.bat config.sys\", \"startup.fil\")\r\n\r\n NetAttach (\"server\")\r\n Creates an attachment between a workstation and a Novell NetWare\r\n file server.\r\n Example: NetAttach (\"MAINSERVER\")\r\n\r\n NetDetach (\"server\")\r\n Detaches a workstation from a Novell NetWare file server.\r\n Example: NetDetach (\"MAINSERVER\")\r\n\r\n Batch Runner SendKey function: In the \"Using SendKey\" section of\r\nthe Batch Builder chapter, {HELP} and {PRTSC} should be removed from\r\nthe list of SendKey equivalents. Rather than {HELP}, {F1} works for\r\nthose applications that assign help to the F1 key. Instead of {PRTSC},\r\nuse the SnapShot function.\r\n\r\n Creating Dialog Boxes with Batch Builder: In the \"Creating Your\r\nOwn Dialog Boxes\" section in the Batch Builder chapter:\r\n\r\n NOTE says that the maximum template file lines is 15; it should \r\n say 20.\r\n \r\n The \"Option Buttons\" subsection says the first option button in a\r\n group of option buttons is selected by default. Rather, you can\r\n control the default selection the same way you control whether or not\r\n a check box defaults to checked: by setting the option button variable\r\n equal to the desired option button's value on a line above the\r\n DialogBox statement.\r\n\r\n Norton Directory Trees: You can use either of two types of\r\ndirectory trees--Norton trees, which produce the fastest displays,\r\nor Collapsible trees, which can be expanded and collapsed. Rather\r\nthan checking a check box as shown on page 22-24 and described on\r\npage 22-25, you can choose the tree type by toggling the Use\r\nCollapsible Tree menu item in the Tree menu. (When it is not checked,\r\nNorton trees are in use.) Refer to online help for more information.\r\n\r\n Index Entries: You should add the following entries to the Index\r\non page I-7:\r\n\r\n EDIT..., 9-1\r\n files\r\n editing, 9-1. See also Desktop Editor\r\n\r\n\r\nNDW.INI\r\n-------\r\n For detailed information about the NDW.INI file, refer to the\r\nNDWINI.TXT file in your Norton Desktop directory.\r\n\r\n\r\nSleeper Screen Saver\r\n--------------------\r\n Sleeper recognizes screen savers from After Dark, Intermission,\r\nand Windows 3.1 if you have installed these applications. However,\r\nSleeper will not recognize the Intermission \"Communique\" saver module,\r\neven if Intermission is installed.\r\n\r\n If you have installed After Dark version 1.0 or 1.0a, each\r\nsaver module appears in the Sleeper list box. Simply select the module\r\nyou want to run. If you have installed After Dark 2.0, \"After Dark\r\nRunner\" appears in the Sleeper list box. Select After Dark Runner, then\r\nclick Configure to launch After Dark 2.0. Make sure the After Dark\r\nswitch is turned ON, then select the saver module you want to use.\r\n\r\n Avoid running Windows 3.1 savers with both a Sleeper password and\r\na Microsoft password. It is recommended to use the Microsoft password\r\nonly.\t\r\n\r\n\r\nSmartCan and Erase Protect\r\n--------------------------\r\n Norton Desktop Version 2.0 uses an improved memory-resident program \r\nto keep track of deleted files: SmartCan. SmartCan replaces the Erase\r\nProtect program (EP.EXE) from Version 1.0. SmartCan, which is typically \r\nloaded from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, copies deleted files to a hidden \r\ndirectory on your disk called SMARTCAN. You can read details about this in\r\nChapter 14 of \"Using Norton Desktop for Windows.\" However, the SmartCan\r\nTSR cannot access any files saved previously to the TRASHCAN hidden\r\ndirectory (created by Erase Protect). To recover files from either the\r\nTRASHCAN or the SMARTCAN hidden directory, use UnErase from Fix-It\r\nDisk #1.\r\n\r\nVDISK and Norton Desktop\r\n------------------------\r\n Norton Desktop is not compatible with VDisk. You should use\r\nRamDrive instead.\r\n\r\n\r\nMACRO RECORDER AND INTERNATIONAL KEYBOARDS\r\n==========================================\r\nMacro recorder will record characters generated with the Alt-GR\r\nkey on international keyboards incorrectly. If recording these keys,\r\nyou must edit the resulting macro file with the Batch Builder and\r\nreplace those keystrokes with the correct special key symbols to \r\ngenerate the proper characters.\r\n\r\n\r\nNORTON BACKUP FOR WINDOWS\r\n=========================\r\n\r\nCompatibility with Norton Backup for DOS (Versions 1.2 and 2.0)\r\n---------------------------------------------------------------\r\n\r\n* Using Backup Volumes Created with Norton Backup for DOS\r\n -------------------------------------------------------\r\n If you are a user of Norton Backup for DOS and are currently\r\nin the middle of a FULL/INCREMENTAL or FULL/DIFFERENTIAL backup\r\ncycle, you should not have to interrupt that cycle and start over.\r\nIn fact, you should be able to use either product to create your\r\nnext backup volume.\r\n Symantec strongly recommends that you test whether you'll be\r\nable to do this by using Norton Backup for Windows to restore some\r\nfiles that were backed up with Norton Backup 1.2 or 2.0 for DOS. If\r\nyou encounter any errors while restoring, there may be some\r\nlimitation(s)--either hardware or software--that inhibits\r\ncompatibility with older Norton Backup volumes. If this is the\r\ncase, you should start the cycle over by making a full backup of\r\nall your drives before resuming your routine.\r\n If you are using Norton Backup version 2.0 for DOS to make backup\r\nsets that you want to read with Norton Backup for Windows, you\r\nshould use enhanced ECC if you plan on restoring the backups using\r\nNorton Backup 1.2 for Windows.\r\n\r\n\r\n* Data Verification\r\n -----------------\r\n If data verification in your setup file was set for \"Read\r\nOnly\" in Norton Backup for DOS, be sure to check your settings in\r\nNorton Backup for Windows when you first load that setup file.\r\nThe \"Read Only\" option does not exist in Norton Backup for Windows\r\nand the setting will default to \"Read and Compare.\" Change this\r\nsetting if you prefer one of the other options.\r\n\r\n\r\n* Macro compatibility\r\n -------------------\r\n If you plan to use setup files that were created with Norton\r\nBackup for DOS, you will need to re-create any macros that were\r\nassociated with those setup files.\r\n\r\n\r\nFloppy Drive Setup\r\n------------------\r\n\r\n* Automatic Floppy Configuration\r\n ------------------------------\r\n The Install program is able to detect the number and type of\r\nfloppy disk drives attached to your system. However, if the\r\nincorrect floppy disk drive types are displayed, you should select\r\n\"Auto Floppy Config\" from the Configure screen and make sure that\r\nit correctly chooses the proper disk drive types.\r\n If the problem persists, check your computer's CMOS setup to\r\nbe sure that your diskette drives are configured properly. This\r\ncan be done using your computer's SETUP program. If the drive types\r\nare still not correct, set them manually.\r\n\r\n\r\n* If Your Compatibility Test Fails\r\n --------------------------------\r\n If your compatibility test failed, there may be a hardware\r\ncompatibility problem with your PC or a software conflict. Try these\r\nthings to solve the compatibility problem:\r\n\r\n1. Click the Configure button.\r\n2. Change the Disk Log Strategy setting to Most Compatible.\r\n3. Change the DMA Operation setting to Most Compatible.\r\n4. Click Floppy Configuration and uncheck Disk Change Detection, then\r\n click OK.\r\n\r\n\r\n* Using a 360K Diskette in a 1.2M Drive\r\n -------------------------------------\r\n Norton Backup for Windows supports backups to 360K diskettes\r\nin high density (1.2M) floppy drives. Though Symantec does not\r\nrecommend this, if you find that you must do this in order to\r\ntransfer files to a machine that only has a 360K drive, you\r\nMUST be sure that you do extensive compatibility testing between\r\nboth machines. First, if you plan on doing backups to low density\r\ndisks in a high density drive, the best method to do this is to\r\nback up using the \"DOS Drive and Path\" option with the component\r\nsize set to 360K. The diskettes should be formatted on a 360K\r\ndrive, since the tracks written to a disk in a 360K drive are\r\ndifferent from those written to a 360K disk in a 1.2M drive.\r\n\r\n\r\n* Floppy Drive Contention\r\n -----------------------\r\n Norton Backup for Windows allows you to switch to other\r\napplications while backing up or restoring data. To ensure that\r\naccess to the floppy drives is not interrupted during this\r\nprocess, Norton Backup hides these drives from all other\r\napplications. Programs that display a list of available drives\r\nwill not display drives A: and B: during these background\r\noperations. For the same reason, you should not try to access your\r\nfloppy drives directly. For example, typing FORMAT A: in a DOS\r\nwindow while using Norton Backup to backup to the A: drive will\r\nproduce an \"invalid drive specification\" system message. Normal\r\nuse of the drive will return once the backup is finished.\r\n\r\n\r\nFile Selection\r\n--------------\r\n\r\n* Manual File Selection\r\n ---------------------\r\n When you select a directory in the tree pane, Norton Backup\r\nfor Windows stores the selection by directory name. When you\r\nselect files in the tree pane, Norton Backup for Windows stores\r\nthe selections by filename. Therefore, selecting all the files in\r\na directory is not the same as selecting that directory. For\r\nexample, if you were to select your Norton directory and back it\r\nup, and at a later date add more files to it (such as data files),\r\nthen those new files would be included in future backups. On the\r\nother hand, if you were to select all the files in your Norton\r\ndirectory (as opposed to selecting the directory itself), any new\r\nfiles added to that directory since the last backup will not be\r\nbacked up.\r\n\r\n\r\n* Setup Files\r\n -----------\r\n If you are planning on using the same setup files for both Norton\r\nBackup for DOS and Norton Backup for Windows 1.2, use include and\r\nexclude statements to describe file selections. If you manually\r\nselect files by directory tree or by filename, the file selection\r\nis stored in an .SLT file. The .SLT files are not compatible\r\nbetween the Windows and the DOS products and the manual file selections\r\nwill not be applied.\r\n\r\n\r\n* Directory Tree File Selection\r\n -----------------------------\r\n You can use the directory tree to quickly select groups of\r\nrelated directories. When you collapse a branch on the tree and\r\nthen select it (the directory displays a plus sign on the folder),\r\nyou will be selecting all of the subdirectories under it as well.\r\n\r\n\r\nEstimated Number of Disks for a Backup\r\n--------------------------------------\r\n The number of disks estimated for backup does not take\r\ncompression into account. This is because the amount of data\r\ncompression varies for different types of files. Therefore, it is\r\ndifficult to accurately estimate the amount of compression that\r\ncan be performed during any given backup. Norton Backup for\r\nWindows will make the most conservative estimate in all cases.\r\n\r\n\r\nAdditional Command Line Option\r\n------------------------------\r\n In addition to those command line options listed in the\r\nNorton Backup documentation, the Minimize switch (/m) allows you\r\nto start Norton Backup as a background operation and display it as\r\nan icon. For more information on this and other command line\r\noptions, refer to the Norton Backup online Help.\r\n\r\n-----End of ReadMe-----"
