Also, when running PC Tools \r\n applications from DESQview, select DESQview in the PC Config \r\n color scheme list to use the best display. \r\n \r\n DOS APPEND Users\r\n ----------------\r\n The DOS APPEND program has no effect while most PC Tools \r\n applications are running.\r\n\r\n Logitech Mouse Users\r\n ---------------------\r\n The Logitech mouse driver version 4.10 has known compatibility \r\n problems with DOS 4.0 or later. Upgrade to the newest mouse \r\n driver, version 6.12. \r\n\r\n Micrologic Infoselect Users\r\n ---------------------------\r\n If you are using Infoselect (IS) 2.0, be sure it is \r\n loaded before PC Tools Desktop in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.\r\n\r\n Novell Users\r\n ------------\r\n If you are on a Novell network and load Commute from within \r\n Windows, or map another SPX drive using DriveMap from within \r\n Windows, the VIPX.386 Windows network driver may keep them from \r\n working properly. To solve this problem:\r\n\r\n 1. Load Commute or DriveMap memory-resident before starting \r\n Windows.\r\n\r\n or\r\n\r\n 2. Edit the Windows SYSTEM.INI file to delete the reference to\r\n VIPX.386 from the \"network=\" line. Leave the rest of the line\r\n as it is.\r\n\r\n Although most systems are unaffected by this, removing this driver \r\n means that multiple DOS applications can no longer access Novell's\r\n IPX services simultaneously.\r\n \r\n Packard Bell Mouse Users\r\n ------------------------\r\n The Packard Bell mouse driver version 4.0 is not fully compatible \r\n with the Microsoft mouse driver (version 6.14 or later). \r\n Use the Microsoft mouse driver (often provided in Windows) \r\n with this mouse.\r\n\r\n QEMM Users\r\n ----------\r\n * PC Tools TSRs make use of new technology to load themselves into \r\n high memory automatically. The QEMM Optimize program does not yet \r\n detect TSRs using this new technology and incorrectly optimizes\r\n memory. RAMBoost does detect programs that load automatically, \r\n and should be used instead of QEMM Optimize.\r\n \r\n * If you are using QEMM and Windows, and run the PC Tools \r\n applications MI or SI, QEMM reports the wrong version number.\r\n Exit from Windows, then run MI or SI.\r\n\r\n * If you load Commute with the /r parameter, or load commsml, and \r\n then run QEMM's Optimize program, Optimize incorrectly places a \r\n LOADHI command in the Commute line. Commute detects this situation \r\n when it tries to load and displays an error message. \r\n \r\n SuperStor Users\r\n ---------------\r\n SuperStor uses a non-standard boot record, which may cause PC \r\n Format and the EDisk program to not find the system files needed\r\n to create a bootable system disk. Run PC Format and the EDisk\r\n program from the original boot drive (the one DCONFIG.SYS is on).\r\n Example: D:EDISK /BOOT_DEV=x: (x=original boot drive)\r\n \r\n SYSGEN Users\r\n ------------\r\n PC Tools supports the SYSGEN bridge driver versions 3.44 and \r\n above.\r\n \r\n Tandy Users\r\n -----------\r\n PC Tools includes the FIXTANDY.EXE program. If you have a \r\n Tandy system, and the Tandy Setup program sometimes runs \r\n unexpectedly, make sure FIXTANDY is memory-resident before \r\n you use any PC Tools application.\r\n\r\n Toshiba 5100 Users\r\n ------------------\r\n If some characters do not appear as expected when you run PC Tools\r\n applications, run PC Config. Select Display, Text Mode, and OK. \r\n Then select Color, and choose the Toshiba Gas Plasma color scheme. \r\n Choose Save, then reboot the machine for the changes to take \r\n effect.\r\n\r\n UltraVision Users\r\n -----------------\r\n * For optimum performance with UltraVision, PC Tools applications\r\n disable the use of alternate fonts.\r\n \r\n * If your mouse does not function normally when using non-standard \r\n line modes (modes other than 80x25, 80x28, 80x43, 80x50), disable \r\n the Fast Mouse Reset option in PC Config, or use the /PS2 command-\r\n line option when starting a PC Tools application.\r\n \r\n \r\n INDIVIDUAL PC TOOLS APPLICATIONS\r\n ================================\r\n \r\n Central Point Backup Users\r\n --------------------------\r\n * If you are using disk-caching software (such as SmartDrive or\r\n PC-Kwik) while doing a medium-speed backup or restore, turn off \r\n the delayed-write feature of the cache program to prevent DMA \r\n conflicts. PC-Cache requires no changes.\r\n\r\n * Two new command-line options have been added:\r\n \r\n /DCHECK Turns on the drive integrity check\r\n /NODCHECK Disables the drive integrity check\r\n\r\n Specifying either option at the command line overrides the settings\r\n in the configuration file.\r\n\r\n * If you are backing up or restoring the bindery files (and have \r\n sufficient rights to do so), they are automatically backed up or\r\n restored, even though they are invisible on the directory tree.\r\n\r\n * If you are restoring data backed up from a Novell network volume, \r\n a new option appears in the Restore Bindery/Trustee/Info dialog\r\n box--Restore Directory Information. When on, CP Backup attempts to\r\n restore the attributes and inherited rights of each directory as\r\n stored on the backup tape. If CP Backup encounters a NetWare \r\n logical error, a message alerts you. The most common error is that \r\n you do not have sufficient network rights to restore a particular\r\n directory.\r\n\r\n * CP Backup supports the following SCSI drives:\r\n Archive Python DAT 1.3GB Mountain 7250 250MB\r\n Archive Viper 2060 60MB Mountain 7500 500MB\r\n Archive Viper 2150 150MB Mountain 1200 1.2GB\r\n Archive Viper 2525 525MB NCR 6100 150MB\r\n Archive Viper 5250 250MB NCR 6300 525MB\r\n Cipher ST150 150MB NCR 2101 2.2GB\r\n Compaq 320/525 525MB Tandberg 3600 150MB\r\n Exabyte 8200C 2.5GB Teac MT-01 250MB\r\n Exabyte EXB-8500 5GB Tecmar THS-2200 2.2GB\r\n Exabyte EXB-8200SX 2.5GB Tecmar ProLine 250 250MB\r\n Exabyte EXB-8200 2.5GB Tecmar ProLine 525 525MB\r\n Hewlett Packard C1502A DAT 1.2GB Tecmar ProLine Data Vault 1.2GB\r\n Hewlett Packard C2224 DAT 1.2GB WangDAT 1300 1.3GB\r\n Maynard 250Q 250MB WangDAT 3100 1.3GB\r\n Maynard 525Q 525MB WangDAT 3200 1.3GB\r\n Maynard 1300+ 1.2GB Wangtek 5099ES 60MB\r\n Maynard 2200+ 2.2GB Wangtek 51000ES\r\n Mountain 2100 2.2GB Wangtek 5150ES 150MB\r\n Mountain 7150 150MB Wangtek 5525ES 525MB\r\n Wangtek 7200HS 2.2GB\r\n Central Point Commute\r\n ---------------------\r\n * If you have the Callback option selected, but you do not have a\r\n password in your Give Control entry, the Callback feature is \r\n ignored. In this situation, your PC waits for a call as if you had \r\n chosen the Wait for Any Caller button. \r\n \r\n * Start Commute with the /NE option if you plan to start Windows \r\n during a Commute session, and you are using EMSNETX.EXE.\r\n\r\n * During a file transfer, Commute may intentionally halt your system \r\n if a pop-up warning appears from the memory-resident applications \r\n VSafe, VWatch, or the Directory Lock feature of Data Monitor. \r\n This protects your system from virus-infected files or from using\r\n protected directories. If you want to give access to directories \r\n protected by Directory Lock, run Data Monitor before the Commute \r\n session, and turn off Directory Lock on the host PC.\r\n\r\n * Change the following two entries in the Commute Command-Line \r\n Options chapter in the printed manual: \r\n /NCP is no longer a valid option.\r\n /WR should be /WRD.\r\n \r\n Datamon - Screen Blanker\r\n ------------------------\r\n * To regain control of your computer after Screen Blanker clears the \r\n screen, press any key or move the mouse. If you specified a Screen\r\n Blanker password, type the password and press <ENTER> to regain\r\n control. NOTE: You are not prompted to enter the password. If \r\n you type anything other than the correct password, Screen Blanker \r\n does not return control of the computer. To clear the incorrect \r\n characters, press <ENTER>, then type the correct password and press \r\n <ENTER> again. \r\n\r\n DriveMap Users\r\n --------------\r\n * If you are using the parallel port of your AST notebook computer\r\n with DriveMap, set the parallel port to standard mode. To do this,\r\n add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the AST:\r\n ASTPORT /S\r\n\r\n * The BIOS of some computers, such as Compaqs, may not recognize the \r\n parallel port of your PC if the cable is plugged into it when you \r\n turn on the PC. DriveMap attempts to resolve this, but if it\r\n cannot find the parallel port, power up your PC without the cable\r\n plugged in. Then plug in the cable, and run DriveMap again.\r\n\r\n Emergency Disk Users\r\n --------------------\r\n * The EDisk program automatically calculates the amount of disk space \r\n needed for the options you have selected in the Configuration \r\n dialog box. Many of the options use shared files, such as video \r\n library files and font files. For this reason, the number of \r\n kilobytes displayed may not change by the amount expected when \r\n you select and deselect options.\r\n\r\n * The EDisk program does not save the DOSOAD.SYS driver from Iomega \r\n (used with their removable cartridge drives). This is because \r\n Iomega uses a unique driver technology.\r\n\r\n Install\r\n -------\r\n * If you are running DR DOS or a version of MS-DOS earlier than 5.0,\r\n Install searches your drives for the first AUTOEXEC.BAT file \r\n in the root directory. If Install cannot find the file, it \r\n prompts you for your boot drive.\r\n \r\n * Some PC Tools files are in a different directory than the one shown \r\n in the File List in Volume 1 of the printed manuals. The following \r\n files are now in the SYSTEM subdirectory of the PC Tools directory:\r\n\r\n CPSHRINK.EXE CONVERT.EXE MENUCONV.EXE\r\n COMMMAP.EXE MENUED.EXE PCRUN.EXE\r\n \r\n * If you are using Direct Access, the PC Tools installation program\r\n converts only version 5.1 files for use with PC Tools Desktop.\r\n \r\n * If you install Version 8 files into a separate directory than\r\n Version 7.x files, you will need to manually add the Version\r\n 7.x Windows programs--Undelete and CP Backup--to the PC Tools\r\n group in Windows. This is done automatically if you install\r\n Version 8 files over Version 7.x files.\r\n \r\n * When you configure Startup Programs during installation, \r\n the contents of batch files called from within your AUTOEXEC.BAT\r\n file are not read. For example, your AUTOEXEC.BAT file may\r\n contain a line like CALL NET.BAT, which loads your network drivers.\r\n PC Tools memory-resident programs may not subsequently load in the\r\n correct order because Startup Programs cannot find the network\r\n drivers. If this is the case, temporarily edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT\r\n file to directly load the contents of the batch files, run PC\r\n Config and select the Startup Programs you want. Save the \r\n configuration, and reboot your machine. After you have rebooted,\r\n you can edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to the way it was.\r\n\r\n Memory Info (MI)\r\n ----------------\r\n If you are using NET5.COM, MI may not identify the DOS 5 Doskey\r\n program.\r\n \r\n PC-Cache\r\n --------\r\n SuperStor and Stacker drives default to read-caching only when \r\n PC-Cache loads. You cannot specify a command-line parameter to\r\n delay write-cache these drives. Although you can activate the\r\n delay write-cache option after the cache is loaded, we do not\r\n recommend it.\r\n\r\n PC Tools Desktop\r\n ----------------\r\n * A new command, Reset Window Size, has been added to the Windows\r\n menu. This allows you to reset all PC Tools Desktop windows to\r\n their default sizes and locations. \r\n\r\n * If you change the video mode from large to small (such as from \r\n 50-line to 25-line), the open windows are reset to their default \r\n size and position, IF any single window cannot fit on the \r\n smaller screen. If you change the video mode from small to\r\n large (such as 25-line to 50-line), the open windows remain in\r\n their current position.\r\n\r\n * A new option, Include Subdirectories in Drop, appears in the \r\n Confirmation dialog box (accessed from the Configure menu). This\r\n option applies when you drag a directory to an application in a\r\n function key or the Menu Window that accepts drag-and-drop file\r\n lists. When the option is off, the operation works only on the\r\n files in the parent directory.\r\n \r\n * The Disk menu has the following new commands:\r\n Wipe Disk\r\n Verify a Disk\r\n DM Program now appears on the Directory Maintenance submenu\r\n \r\n * Undelete is only available from the PC Tools Desktop when the Data \r\n Monitor Delete Sentry method is turned on.\r\n \r\n RAMBoost Users\r\n --------------\r\n * RAMBoost supports MS-DOS versions 3.3 to 5.0, and DR DOS version\r\n 6.0 only.\r\n \r\n * Use PC Config's Startup Programs option to load RAMBoost,\r\n especially if the RAMBoost directory is not in your path.\r\n \r\n * RAMBoost works in conjunction with your memory manager to make\r\n the best use of your memory. If you use RAMBoost, do not use \r\n your memory manager's optimization program, because RAMBoost\r\n replaces that functionality.\r\n\r\n * If you want RAMBoost to load programs high that are in your \r\n Novell login script, remove the ignore=login.exe line from the \r\n RAMBOOST.INI file in the [completiontriggers] section.\r\n \r\n * If you are using RAMBoost, Windows, and QEMM 6.0, and encounter\r\n QEMM errors, upgrade to QEMM version 6.02 or later.\r\n\r\n * RAMBoost does not strip LH and similar commands from batch files \r\n that are called by your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. To ensure that RAMBoost \r\n optimizes all memory-resident programs, remove the LH and similar \r\n commands from all called batch files.\r\n\r\n * If you are using a Token Ring adapter:\r\n \r\n If you are using a memory manager other than the DOS 5 memory\r\n manager, exclude the shared memory area used by the adapter \r\n before running RAMSETUP. If you are using the DOS 5 memory\r\n manager, log in to the network, and run RAMSETUP. Use the\r\n Upper Memory Usage Editor to exclude the shared memory area\r\n used by the adapter.\r\n\r\n * Certain TSRs and device drivers may not get loaded high because\r\n of an unusually large initialization size. You can edit your \r\n RAMBOOST.INI file to instruct RAMBoost to try other optimization\r\n methods. We recommend you use the optmethod option with a -1 value.\r\n See \"The RAMBoost Configuration File\" section of the RAMBoost \r\n chapter in Volume 1 for instructions.\r\n \r\n * Three new options appear in the RAMBOOST.INI file: \r\n \r\n ignore: Lets you specify a program file name in this \r\n form: ignore=<filename.ext>. This option allows RAMBoost \r\n in LEARN mode to not attempt to optimize the programs \r\n specified. This option is in the [completiontriggers] \r\n section of the RAMBOOST.INI file.\r\n\r\n MinUMBs:Lets you specify minimum free memory in this form: \r\n MinUMBs=<number>. Replace <number> with the number of \r\n free kilobytes that must be available in upper memory for \r\n RAMSetup to install RAMBoost in your CONFIG.SYS file. The \r\n default value is 32, which is enough for most systems. This \r\n option helps avoid low-memory conditions that occur with \r\n some TSRs and device drivers. This option is in the\r\n [system] section of the RAMBOOST.INI file. \r\n \r\n TimerType:Lets you specify a display type in this form:\r\n TimerType=<DisplayType>. Replace <DisplayType> with \r\n Elapsed or ETA. These options change the way time appears \r\n on the screen during the optimization process. The Elapsed \r\n option displays the time elapsed from the beginning of the \r\n optimization. The ETA option displays how long RAMBoost \r\n estimates the optimization will take. This value is updated \r\n dynamically during the optimization. This option is in the \r\n [oui] section of the RAMBOOST.INI file.\r\n\r\n System Information Users\r\n ------------------------\r\n Because of demands Windows makes on system resources, the System\r\n Information's performance results will be different when you run \r\n the application from within Windows compared to DOS. Also, the Disk \r\n Speed test is disabled in Windows.\r\n \r\n Task Switcher Users\r\n -------------------\r\n * Some PC Tools applications provide only limited access to Task\r\n Switcher to make sure your data stays intact during low-level disk\r\n access. You cannot use the hotkey to open Task Switcher from within \r\n the following applications:\r\n \r\n FileFix Compress Wipe\r\n Undelete Unformat PCFormat\r\n DiskFix (while fixing or checking a disk) CP Backup\r\n Desktop Accessories Telecom online screen\r\n \r\n Similarly, while Task Switcher is open and at least one other \r\n application is in the Task Switcher list, you cannot switch to \r\n Compress or Undelete. If you switch to DiskFix in this situation, \r\n you are notified of disk errors, but cannot fix them. To repair \r\n errors, you must end all tasks, and restart DiskFix. \r\n\r\n * Do not unload Task Switcher from a batch file. If you do so, no\r\n commands following the CPTASK /u command are executed.\r\n\r\n * Do not delete the primary DOS prompt from the Task Switcher list\r\n if you are using NDOS or 4DOS. Task Switcher can only be unloaded \r\n from the primary prompt.\r\n \r\n \r\n SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS\r\n =====================\r\n\r\n Custom Installation Slides\r\n --------------------------\r\n You can edit the slides that appear during a custom installation \r\n to reflect specific information for your users. The file to edit \r\n is _SLIDES.DOC. The following paragraphs explain how to do this:\r\n\r\n All commands must begin in column 1 and start with a period. The \r\n default action is for Install to automatically format running text \r\n into paragraphs, with the left margin starting in column 4 of the \r\n window containing the formatted slide. This window is 74-columns \r\n wide, and the longest line that will display (with 4-character \r\n left and right margins) will be 66 characters. Separate \r\n paragraphs with a blank line.\r\n\r\n Do not use tab characters in the file.\r\n\r\n You can use the following commands:\r\n\r\n .title Defines the beginning of a new slide and text to display \r\n in the banner of the slide window. Insert a space \r\n between the first character of the banner text and the \r\n .title command.\r\n\r\n .> Centers all text on the line following the .>. Insert \r\n a space between the first character of the text to be \r\n centered and the .> command.\r\n\r\n .nofill Prints all lines following the .nofill command literally,\r\n without any formatting, starting in the currently\r\n defined left margin. All leading spaces are honored. To\r\n return to paragraph fill mode, use the .fill command,\r\n described next.\r\n\r\n .fill [x] Blocks all lines following the .fill command into\r\n paragraphs, with lines no longer than 66 characters that\r\n normally start in column 4 (the default). The .fill command \r\n is the default. The optional x parameter specifies the number \r\n of characters each paragraph should be indented, either \r\n negative or positive (for true indentations). However, if a \r\n negative indentation causes a line to begin prior to column 4 \r\n of the window, it is treated as an error. If you omit the x \r\n parameter, paragraphs have no indentation.\r\n\r\n .lm x Adds x character positions to the default left margin of 4.\r\n Stays in effect until the next .lm command is encountered. \r\n This number must be positive.\r\n\r\n .time x Specifies the time x in seconds for displaying this slide. \r\n This command should immediately follow the .title command."
