Refer to your Windows manual for\r\ndetails on expanding files.\r\n\r\nYour disk(s) might also contain a PSFONTS directory and a\r\nPCLFONTS directory. The PSFONTS directory contains\r\nPostScript Font Outline (PFB) files and Printer Font Metrics\r\n(PFM) files. The PCLFONTS directory contains PCL bitmapped\r\nfont files, which have filename extensions of either SFP or\r\nSFL. The PCLFONTS directory also contains Printer Font\r\nMetrics (PFM) files.\r\n\r\nIf you received ATM with Adobe Acrobat Exchange, Reader, or\r\nDistiller, there are also two MultipleMaster Substitution\r\nOutline (PFB) files as well as their respective\r\nMultipleMaster Font Metrics (MMM) files. These files are\r\nlocated in the PSFONTS directory. MultipleMaster fonts are\r\nrequired for font substitution in the Adobe Acrobat\r\nproducts.\r\n\r\n2. Installation Requirements\r\n\r\nTo install ATM, you need a c:\\ drive and sufficient disk\r\nspace for the ATM software and fonts. The amount of disk\r\nspace you need depends on the number of fonts included with\r\nyour ATM package. The standard retail ATM package requires\r\nabout 1.4 megabytes of free disk space. The default\r\ndirectory for the PostScript fonts is c:\\psfonts. You can,\r\nhowever, install the font files in any directory on any\r\ndrive.\r\n\r\n3. What's New in version 2.6\r\n\r\nNew program functions where implemented in ATM version 2.6\r\nto support the Adobe Acrobat Exchange, Reader, and Distiller\r\nproducts.\r\n\r\n4. ATM.INI\r\n\r\nATM's initialization file, ATM.INI, is created during\r\ninstallation. It contains a list of fonts installed in ATM\r\nand other ATM program-related settings. See Appendix A at\r\nthe end of this README file for more technical information.\r\n\r\n5. ATM Control Panel\r\n\r\nThere is no longer a pre-defined limit to the number of\r\nfonts you can install with the ATM Control Panel. Windows\r\ndoes, however, limit initialization files (including the\r\nATM.INI and the WIN.INI) to a size of 64K. If this limit is\r\nreached, Windows cannot open, read, or write properly to\r\nthese INI files.\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.0 and 3.0a, Microsoft recommends keeping\r\ninitialization files smaller than 32k in size. Following\r\nthis recommendation, the maximum number of fonts that can be\r\nlisted in ATM.INI for Windows 3.0 or 3.0a is around 450\r\nfonts. For Windows 3.1, the only limit is the 64K maximum\r\nfile size, which is large enough for about 900 fonts.\r\nMany applications limit the number of fonts that can be\r\ndisplayed in their font menus. For example, an application\r\nfont menu might show only 200 fonts even though you have\r\ninstalled more than 200 ATM fonts.\r\n\r\nThe more fonts you add with ATM, the longer it takes Windows\r\nto start. The exact time required for Windows to start\r\ndepends on the type of processor you have and your system\r\nconfiguration. To reduce the time it takes Windows to start,\r\nmake more memory available to Windows by, for example,\r\nremoving Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) programs. You can\r\nalso reduce the time it takes Windows to start by removing\r\nATM fonts you use infrequently.\r\n\r\n6. Adding and Removing Fonts\r\n\r\nWith ATM you can add and remove fonts without restarting\r\nWindows. When you use ATM to add and remove fonts while\r\nother applications are running, however, the ATM font\r\nchanges are not always automatically available in the\r\napplication font menus. Some applications, such as Windows\r\nWrite and Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows, update their available\r\nfont lists immediately, while others, such as Lotus AmiPro\r\n3.0 and Aldus PageMaker 4.0, require that you re-select your\r\nprinter before the ATM font changes appear in font menus. A\r\nfew applications, such as Adobe Illustrator 4.0 and\r\nQuattroPro for Windows 1.0, build their font menus when they\r\nare started. You must restart these applications to see ATM\r\nfont changes in their font menus.\r\n\r\n7. PostScript Fonts Listed in the ATM Control Panel\r\n\r\nEvery PostScript font contains a specific Windows menu name,\r\nwhich may differ from the true PostScript font name. For\r\nexample, when you see the font Bookman in the font menu of a\r\ntypical Windows application, you are actually using the\r\nPostScript Bookman Light. Windows font menu names are\r\narranged in family groups of four styles (regular, bold,\r\nbolditalic and italic). Each member of a family group is\r\nlisted in the ATM Control Panel individually by its family\r\nname and its style link. For example, Helvetica with its\r\nfour different styles appears as Helvetica, Helvetica,BOLD,\r\nHelvetica,BOLDITALIC, and Helvetica,ITALIC, although in a\r\ntypical Windows application you only see the one base style\r\nHelvetica. The other styles are accessed by selecting the\r\nbold and italic style attributes.\r\n\r\nSome fonts have more than four styles to a family. For\r\nexample, Adobe Garamond has six different styles. In\r\nconforming to the Windows standard of grouping fonts into\r\nfamilies of four, the font is broken up into two base font\r\ngroups, AGaramond and AGaramond Bold. The following table\r\nillustrates how these different styles are used within\r\nWindows applications:\r\n\r\nWindows menu name with style link True PostScript font name\r\nAGaramond AGaramond\r\nAGaramond,BOLD AGaramond Semibold\r\nAGaramond,BOLDITALIC AGaramond SemiboldItalic\r\nAGaramond,ITALIC AGaramond Italic\r\nAGaramond Bold AGaramond Bold\r\nAGaramond Bold,ITALIC AGaramond BoldItalic\r\n\r\nThe readme document on every Adobe font package lists how\r\nthe actual fonts are linked to their respective Windows font\r\nmenu names.\r\n\r\nSome display or decorative fonts have only one style and\r\nwere designed with a specific style and weight in mind.\r\nAlthough ATM provides you with the ability to synthesize\r\nbold and italic styles when only one style is present, you\r\nshould refrain from doing so. Synthesizing styles may lead\r\nto unexpected results when printing to high-resolutions\r\ndevices.\r\n\r\n8. PostScript Fonts and the Microsoft PostScript driver\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.1, there is no longer a 150 font limit on the\r\nnumber of soft font entries you can have for a PostScript\r\nprinter. For Windows 3.0 and 3.0a, however, the maximum\r\nnumber of soft font entries per PostScript printer WIN.INI\r\nentry is approximately 150. The exact number depends on your\r\nparticular system configuration. If you receive spurious\r\nprinter-related error messages when starting Windows or\r\nswitching to a PostScript printer, you might have too many\r\nsoft font entries in the printer's WIN.INI entry. To correct\r\nthe problem, try using the ATM Control Panel to remove soft\r\nfonts you don't normally use.\r\n\r\nIf you manually remove soft font entries from the PostScript\r\nprinter section of the WIN.INI file, remember to adjust the\r\nline \"softfonts=nn\" to show the new total number of soft\r\nfont entries. The ATM Control Panel automatically renumbers\r\nsoft font entries in WIN.INI when you remove fonts. ATM\r\ncannot, however, correct misnumbered font entries.\r\n\r\nThe Microsoft Windows 3.1 PostScript driver lets you use a\r\nsynthesized italic style for a PostScript font even if the\r\noutline font (PFB) file for the italic font is not present\r\non this system. Windows, however, cannot provide the\r\nPostScript driver with the correct font metrics for a\r\nsynthesized italic face, so the font is displayed with\r\nexpanded character spacing. Also, PostScript printers print\r\nthe Roman (non-italic) face for the synthesized italic face\r\nwhen you print.\r\n\r\n9. Soft Font Printing and the Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\r\n option\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.1 and later, ATM takes advantage of a new\r\nfeature available with some printer drivers that lets ATM\r\nuse the driver to create soft fonts on-the-fly. Creating\r\nsoft fonts on-the-fly speeds up printing. Printer drivers\r\nthat create soft fonts on-the-fly include the drivers for\r\nthe HP LaserJet family of printers and the driver for the\r\nIBM Lexmark printers.\r\n\r\nThis feature does not work with all printers that support\r\ndownloaded printer soft fonts. The printer's Windows 3.1\r\nprinter driver must also support on-the-fly soft font\r\ncreation for this feature to work. To determine whether a\r\nWindows 3.1 printer driver supports on-the-fly soft font\r\ncreation, check the Printer Setup Options dialog box in the\r\nWindows Printer Control Panel. If you do not see a \"Print\r\nTrueType as Graphics\" option, the driver most likely cannot\r\ncreate printer soft fonts on-the-fly.\r\n\r\nIf you set up your printer driver to print TrueType fonts as\r\ngraphics, ATM prints fonts as graphics regardless of how the\r\n\"Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\" option is set.\r\n\r\nThe \"Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\" option controls whether or\r\nnot ATM uses the soft font creation feature when it is\r\navailable. By default, the \"Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\"\r\noption is cleared and ATM uses the soft font creation\r\nfeature. When you select the \"Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\"\r\noption, however, ATM prints characters as graphics.\r\n\r\nSome applications, such as CorelDraw! 3.0, always print text\r\nas graphics.\r\n\r\nSelecting the \"Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\" option can solve\r\ncertain printing problems, such as when printing special\r\nshadow or zoomed text effects or graphic objects placed on\r\ntop of text strings.\r\n\r\nWhen you change the \"Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\" option\r\nwhile other applications are running, the change usually\r\ntakes effect immediately. In a few applications, such as\r\nWord for Windows 2.0 for example, you must re-select your\r\nprinter before the ATM print mode change takes effect.\r\n\r\n10. Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts\r\n\r\nWhen you select the \"Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts\"\r\noption, ATM lets PCL printer drivers use pre-built or\r\nprinter-resident fonts to print documents. When you clear\r\nthe Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts check box, ATM creates\r\ncharacters for PCL printer drivers to print even when pre-\r\nbuilt or printer-resident fonts are available.\r\n\r\nAlthough ATM does not require that you restart Windows after\r\nyou change the \"Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts\" option, you\r\nmight have to quit and restart applications for this option\r\nto take effect.\r\n\r\nIf you are using Windows 3.1 with printer drivers that allow\r\nsoft fonts to be created on-the-fly (such as the PCL\r\ndrivers), you might want to turn this option off to speed up\r\nprinting. It is more efficient for a printer driver to\r\ncreate a soft font on-the-fly than to download a pre-built\r\nfont. You can see if you have any pre-built fonts installed\r\nfor your PCL printer by checking the printer driver's Fonts\r\ndialog box. To display the driver's Fonts dialog box, choose\r\nFonts in the driver's Printer Setup dialog box.\r\n\r\nWhen the \"Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts\" option is\r\nselected, you might find the characters of a printer-\r\nresident or soft font that you place beneath a graphic image\r\nprint on top of the image. To see an example of this\r\nproblem, open an application that lets you draw images over\r\ntext, select the Courier font, type some text, and draw a\r\ngray box on top of the text. The font is covered by the gray\r\nbox on the screen. Now print with the \"Use Pre-built or\r\nResident Fonts\" option selected to see if your printer\r\nprints the text on top of the gray box. If the text prints\r\non top of the box, you will also have this problem when you\r\nturn ATM off. To correct this problem, clear the Use Pre-\r\nbuilt or Resident Fonts check box.\r\n\r\n11. Install As Autodownload Fonts for the PostScript\r\n Driver\r\n\r\nThe Microsoft PostScript printer driver uses the\r\n[PostScript, portname] section in the WIN.INI file to find\r\nthe PostScript soft fonts installed on the system. As an\r\nexample, the following [PostScript, portname] section shows\r\ntwo soft fonts installed for a PostScript printer connected\r\nto the parallel port LPT1.\r\n\r\n[PostScript, LPT1]\r\nsoftfonts=2\r\nsoftfont1=c:\\psfonts\\pfm\\tkrg______.pfm;c:\\psfonts\\tkrg____.pfb\r\nsoftfont2=c:\\psfonts\\pfm\\tkb_______.pfm;c:\\psfonts\\tkb_____.pfb\r\n\r\nEach of these soft font entries is made up of two parts:\r\n* The first part is the path and file name of the soft\r\n font's printer font metrics (PFM) file\r\n* The second part is the path and file name of the soft\r\n font's outline (PFB) file\r\n\r\nThe PFM file part is necessary for all PostScript fonts\r\nwhose character metrics are not hard-coded in the PostScript\r\ndriver. The PFB file part is needed only when you want the\r\ndriver to download the font outline with every print job\r\nthat uses this font.\r\n\r\nTo set up the Microsoft PostScript driver to automatically\r\ndownload a font at print time, install the font with the\r\n\"Install as autodownload fonts for the PostScript driver\"\r\noption selected. When this option is selected, ATM adds both\r\nthe PFM and PFB parts of the soft font entry.\r\n\r\nYou must also select the \"Install as autodownload fonts for\r\nthe PostScript driver\" option if you are installing the\r\nstandard Base35 fonts for a printer that does not contain\r\nthem. The Base35 fonts (available with the Adobe PlusPack\r\nand the PostScript Type Cartridge) are: AvantGarde, Bookman,\r\nCourier, Helvetica, HelveticaNarrow, NewCenturySchoolbook,\r\nPalatino, Symbol, Times, ZapfChancery, and ZapfDingbats.\r\nMost, but not all, newer PostScript printers contain the\r\nBase35 fonts.\r\n\r\nIf you are adding fonts to ATM that are already resident in\r\nthe printer, you can uncheck this option to instruct the\r\nprinter driver not to send the font outline files to the\r\nprinter at print time. With the \"Install as autodownload\r\nfonts for the PostScript driver\" option unchecked, ATM adds\r\nonly the PFM part of the soft font entries in WIN.INI. You\r\nshould also uncheck this option for fonts you plan to\r\nmanually download to the printer.\r\n\r\nHow ATM 2.6 Adds Base35 Fonts\r\n\r\nWhen the \"Install as autodownload fonts for the PostScript\r\ndriver\" option is unchecked, ATM does not add soft font\r\nentries to WIN.INI for the Base35 soft fonts. The soft font\r\nentries for these fonts are not needed because the font\r\nmetrics for these fonts are hard-coded in the driver. If\r\nsoft font entries for the Base35 fonts are present in\r\nWIN.INI, however, they are ignored by the PostScript driver\r\nat print time if the Base35 fonts are resident in the\r\nprinter. In other words, the PostScript driver does not\r\ndownload the outlines of these fonts if they are already\r\npresent on the printer. The only exception to this rule is\r\nfor the Bookman font. If a Bookman PFB entry is present in\r\nthe WIN.INI, the driver downloads the outline file at print\r\ntime. To correct this problem and to force the driver to use\r\nthe Bookman font resident in the printer, re-add the four\r\nfaces of Bookman with the \"Install as autodownload fonts for\r\nthe PostScript driver\" option unchecked\r\n\r\n12. Using Third-party and Shareware fonts\r\n\r\nATM has been tested with a large number of third-party and\r\nshareware fonts. There are, however, certain limitations in\r\nrasterizing fonts that have been converted using third-party\r\nfont converters. If you experience any problems with the\r\nfonts you have, please contact Adobe Customer Support at\r\n(408) 986-6520, FAX (408) 562-6767. Although we cannot solve\r\nall fonts problems, we will do our best to solve any\r\nincompatibilities you are experiencing.\r\n\r\n13. ATM and Printing\r\n\r\nATM uses PostScript outline fonts to produce a smooth\r\ngraphic display of your fonts on-screen. The fonts available\r\nfor use depend on the printer you have selected in your\r\napplication.\r\n\r\nThe fonts available for non-PostScript printers are the\r\nprinter resident fonts, the Windows internal bitmapped\r\nfonts, the TrueType fonts installed on the system (for\r\nWindows 3.1), and the PostScript fonts listed in the ATM\r\nControl Panel.\r\n\r\nFor PostScript printers, the fonts available are the printer\r\nresident fonts, the TrueType fonts installed on the system\r\n(for Windows 3.1), and the PostScript soft font entries\r\nlisted in the printer's [PostScript, portname] section in\r\nthe WIN.INI file. When you print to a PostScript printer,\r\nATM does not have to be active because it does not have to\r\nrasterize any fonts. Windows and the Microsoft PostScript\r\ndriver are responsible for downloading outline fonts to your\r\nPostScript printer.\r\n\r\nPrint Resolution\r\n\r\nFor the highest print quality, Adobe recommends you set up\r\nyour printer to print at the highest resolution available.\r\nCertain PCL printer drivers do not properly set the print\r\nresolution. They might appear to be set at 300 dpi\r\nresolution in the Windows Printer Control Panel even though\r\nthey are set to a lower resolution. Some applications fail\r\nto print correctly when your PCL printer resolution is not\r\nset to 300 dpi. Excel 3.0a, for example, prints blank cells\r\ninstead of ATM fonts when printing ATM fonts as graphics and\r\nyour PCL printer is not set to 300 dpi. If you suspect your\r\nPCL printer driver is not set to 300 dpi, set the resolution\r\nto 75 dpi, save this option, and then set the resolution\r\nback to 300 dpi. When your printer resolution is set to 300\r\ndpi, the line \"prtresfac=0\" appears in the PCL printer entry\r\nin the WIN.INI file.\r\n\r\nColored Text\r\n\r\nATM generates a graphic image of colored text regardless of\r\nthe ATM print mode (soft font or graphics) set with the\r\n\"Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\" option. To force ATM to\r\ngenerate black or white soft fonts for monochrome printers\r\nand color soft fonts for printers such as the HP PaintJet\r\n300xl, add the following [Colors] section to your ATM.INI\r\nfile.\r\n\r\n[Colors]\r\nPrintColorGraphics=Off\r\n\r\nSee Appendix A for a description of this setting. Always\r\nmake a backup copy of the ATM.INI before making changes. If\r\nyou make a mistake, you can use the backup file to restore\r\nATM to its previous configuration.\r\n\r\n14. Printer and Video Drivers\r\n\r\nFor the highest font rasterization quality, Adobe recommends\r\nyou use the latest Windows printer and video drivers. If you\r\nare using the Microsoft Windows 3.1 DeskJet driver version\r\n1.2, make sure to use the Universal Printer driver dated\r\n06/29/92. Otherwise, it is suggested to upgrade to the\r\nUniversal Printer driver version 3.1.2 when printing to HP\r\nPCL4 and PCL5 printers and compatibles.\r\n\r\nAdobe recommends using the LaserJet IV driver version\r\n31.V1.18 or later. If you experiencing printing problems\r\nwhen using this driver, try setting the Graphics options in\r\nthe Windows Control Panel Printer Setup to Raster mode or\r\nreducing the print resolution from 600 dpi to 300 dpi.\r\n\r\n15. Installing Fonts from the Adobe PlusPack and Adobe\r\n PostScript and Type Cartridges\r\n\r\nInstalling fonts from the Adobe PlusPack or for the Adobe\r\nPostScript or Adobe Type Cartridge requires that you insert\r\nthe different font disks many times. To avoid having to\r\nrepeatedly insert font disks, follow these steps:\r\n\r\n1. Create a temporary directory on your hard disk.\r\n2. Copy all the files from all the font disks to the\r\n temporary directory.\r\n3. Start the ATM Control Panel and choose Add. The Add ATM\r\n Fonts dialog box appears.\r\n4. Using the Directories list box, open the temporary\r\n directory. The names of all the fonts appear in the\r\n Available Fonts list.\r\n5. Select the fonts you want to add and either accept the\r\n default target directories or enter the names of the\r\n PostScript font directories you are using.\r\n6. Choose Add. The fonts are added and you are returned to\r\n the ATM Control Panel.\r\n7. Choose OK to close the ATM Control Panel.\r\n8. Delete all the files in the temporary directory; then\r\n delete the temporary directory.\r\n\r\n16. Installing ATM in the IBM OS/2 Windows Compatibility Box\r\n\r\nBefore installing ATM version 2.6 over an existing version\r\nof ATM in the IBM OS/2 Windows Compatibility box, you must\r\nfirst edit the Boot section of your Windows SYSTEM.INI file.\r\nReplace the two lines\r\n\r\n SYSTEM.DRV=ATMSYS.DRV\r\n ATM.SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV\r\n\r\nwith this line\r\n\r\n SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV\r\n\r\nAfter changing the SYSTEM.INI file, start Windows and\r\ninstall ATM as instructed in the manual. Always make a\r\nbackup copy of the SYSTEM.INI before making changes. If you\r\nmake a mistake, you can use the backup file to restore\r\nWindows to its previous configuration.\r\n\r\n17. Application Notes\r\n\r\nWhen you add or remove a font while an application is\r\nactive, the application font menus are not always updated\r\nautomatically. If you add or remove a font while one of the\r\nfollowing applications is active,\r\n\r\n AmiPro 3.0, Freehand 3.0, Freelance 1.0, PageMaker 4.0,\r\n Ventura Publisher for Windows, and WordPerfect 5.2.for\r\n Windows\r\n \r\n \r\nyou must re-select your printer to update the application's\r\nfont menu.\r\n \r\nAdobe Illustrator 4.0\r\n\r\nIf you have Illustrator 4.0 and add or remove a font, you\r\nmust restart Windows for font changes to take effect in\r\nIllustrator.\r\n\r\nIf you are using newer versions of the Adobe Enumerator, you\r\nneed only restart Illustrator to see ATM font changes. Make\r\nsure Illustrator is closed, however, before using ATM to add\r\nor remove fonts.\r\n\r\nThe two enumerator files PSENUM.DLL and RUN_ENUM.EXE, which\r\nIllustrator uses to register ATM font changes, are located\r\nin the Windows system directory. If your enumerator files\r\nare dated 7/17/92 or earlier, you need to obtain the most\r\nrecent versions of these files. You can receive the updates\r\nto these files free of charge by contacting Adobe Customer\r\nSupport at (408) 986-6520. You can also download these files\r\nfrom the Adobe CompuServe forum.\r\n\r\nIf you are using Enumerator files dated 7/17/92 or earlier,\r\nyou have to restart Windows for ATM font changes to take\r\neffect.\r\n\r\nCorelDraw!\r\n\r\nCorelDraw! 3.0 now supports ATM fonts. Adobe strongly\r\nrecommends that you obtain the maintenance release version\r\n3.0b. You must restart CorelDraw! for ATM font changes to\r\ntake effect. CorelDraw! version 2.0 does not support ATM\r\nfonts.\r\n\r\nDesigner 3.1 and Charisma 2.1\r\n\r\nThe lines used for underlines and strikeouts may appear\r\nbroken when using an ATM font. This is due the way these\r\nMicrografx products handle character placement.\r\n\r\nIf you rotate text at a 90 degree angle and then stretch it,\r\nyou might find that the font will not be properly resized. To\r\navoid this problem, first resize the font and then rotate it.\r\nRotating stretched text at a 180 degree angle might cause the\r\nlast letters in the text string to overlap. To correct this\r\nproblem, first rotate the text by 180 degrees and then\r\nstretch it.\r\n\r\nRotated text at certain angles will sometimes print with\r\nexpanded character spacing on non-PostScript printers. To\r\ncorrect this problem, try using the Print View option and\r\nselecting the entire page.\r\n\r\nFaceLift for Windows\r\n\r\nFaceLift for Windows modifies the printer entries in the\r\nWIN.INI. If FaceLift is installed, the ATM Installer and\r\nControl Panel do not recognize the installed PostScript\r\nprinters and cannot add PostScript soft font entries for\r\nthese printers. Before adding fonts for PostScript printers,\r\nyou must first temporarily disable the \"Print with FaceLift\"\r\noption in FaceLift Control Panel. After the fonts have been\r\ninstalled, you can reenable \"Print with FaceLift\" option.\r\n\r\nFastFonts\r\n\r\nWhen using the type utility FastFonts, you must select the\r\n\"Print ATM text as Graphics\" options in the ATM Control Panel\r\nfor ATM text to print properly.\r\n\r\nHarvard Draw 1.01\r\n\r\nHarvard Draw 1.01 supports ATM fonts. You must restart the\r\napplication for ATM font changes to take effect.\r\n\r\nHarvard Graphics 1.01 for Windows\r\n\r\nHarvard Graphics cannot rotate ATM fonts. Harvard Graphics\r\nuses its own internal scalable fonts for all rotated text.\r\n\r\nIf you are using Harvard Graphics and ATM with a high-\r\nresolution video driver, you must obtain the maintenance\r\nupgrade version 1.021 or higher.\r\n\r\nIf you make ATM font changes while Harvard Draw is running,\r\nyou must select another printer driver and switch back to the\r\noriginal driver for the ATM font changes to take effect.\r\n\r\nMicrografx PostScript Driver\r\n\r\nThe Micrografx PostScript driver has a non-standard printer\r\nsection structure in the WIN.INI. PostScript soft fonts\r\ncannot be installed to this driver using the ATM Installer\r\nand Control Panel. You can, however, install your fonts\r\nthrough the Micrografx Printer Setup menu. See your\r\nMicrografx manual for instructions.\r\n\r\nProgram Manager replacements (Norton Desktop for Windows and\r\nPCTools Desktop)\r\n\r\nDue to the different structure of Norton Desktop's and\r\nPCTools Desktop's application groups, the ATM Control Panel\r\nicon might not be properly installed into the Main group\r\nwhen you are running Norton or PCTools as your desktop\r\nshell. If this occurs, you must manually add the ATM Control\r\nPanel icon. The ATM Installer will, however, copy all of the\r\nnecessary files to your system and will configure Windows to\r\nrun ATM. See the Norton Desktop or PCTools manual for\r\ninstructions on how to install a new icon in a group.\r\n\r\nQuattro Pro for Windows 1.0\r\n\r\nYou must restart this application for ATM font changes to\r\ntake effect.\r\n\r\nPageMaker 4.0\r\n\r\nFor best results with ATM, set the \"Vector text above\" and\r\n\"Stretch text above\" limits in the Preferences dialog box to\r\n10000 pixels each.\r\n\r\nIf you make ATM font changes while PageMaker is running, you\r\nmust re-select your printer for the ATM font changes to take\r\neffect.\r\n\r\nTypeAlign 2.0\r\n\r\nIf you receive the error message \"Application requested\r\nabnormal termination\" after installing TypeAlign under\r\nWindows 3.1, you must manually remove the entry TALGNDLL.EXE\r\nfrom the load line of the WIN.INI file. TALGNDLL.EXE is not\r\ncompatible with Windows 3.1. The Load= line in the WIN.INI\r\nfile is in the [windows] section. Be very careful when you\r\nchange WIN.INI. If you make a mistake, Windows will not work\r\ncorrectly. TypeAlign 2.1 corrects this problem.\r\n\r\nVentura Publisher Windows Edition\r\n\r\nAdobe recommends using version 4.1. For upgrade information,\r\nplease contact Ventura at (800) 822-8221.\r\n\r\nThe fonts Helvetica and Times do not display correctly in\r\nReduced View.\r\n\r\nIf you make ATM font changes while Ventura Publisher is\r\nrunning, you must re-select your printer for the ATM font\r\nchanges to take effect.\r\n\r\nWord for Windows 2.0\r\n\r\nDouble underlines may print as one thick underline at point\r\nsizes larger than 18 points. This is due to the method Word\r\nfor Windows uses to perform double underlining.\r\n\r\nSmart quotes (characters Alt+0147 and Alt+0148) might print\r\nas double single quotes with some printer drivers. The\r\ngeneric bullet character (Alt+0149) might print as a\r\nlowercase o.\r\n\r\nVarious Applications with Draft Mode Printing Feature\r\n\r\nSome applications which support draft mode printing do not\r\nprint graphics when they print in draft mode. When ATM is\r\nset up to print ATM fonts as graphics, text might not print\r\ncorrectly in draft mode. To correct this problem, clear the\r\n\"Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\" option in the ATM Control\r\nPanel.\r\n\r\nVarious Font Conversion Utilities\r\n\r\nSome font conversion utilities, such as AllType,\r\nautomatically update the ATM.INI file. You must restart\r\nWindows for font changes in the ATM.INI file introduced by\r\nthese utilities to take effect.\r\n\r\nVirus Protection Software\r\n\r\nSome virus protection software packages do not allow the ATM\r\nInstaller to replace previous versions of ATM software. If\r\nyou have this problem, first scan your hard drive for\r\nviruses. Then temporarily disable your virus protection\r\nsoftware while you install ATM. Remember to re-enable your\r\nvirus protection software and re-scan your hard disk after\r\ninstalling ATM.\r\n\r\nWordPerfect for Windows 5.1 and 5.2\r\n\r\nATM requires the standard Windows printer drivers in order\r\nto print ATM text. You cannot print ATM fonts with the\r\nWordPerfect printer drivers, unless you also use a third-\r\nparty type utility such as PrimeType from LaserTools.\r\n\r\nWordPerfect for Windows uses its own screen fonts for\r\npreview, so ATM is not active in WordPerfect preview mode\r\n\r\nSome special characters in the ANSI character set (with\r\nvalues higher than 128) do not print as displayed. See your\r\nWindows documentation for the ANSI character set.\r\n\r\n17. Novell Netware Considerations\r\n\r\nAlthough ATM is not a network application, you can print to\r\nnetwork printers using ATM. However, you must configure the\r\nFile Contents section in your print job definition to\r\nspecify Byte stream instead of Text. The Byte stream option\r\nis required because ATM sends raster graphics to non-\r\nPostScript printers.\r\n\r\nTo add fonts from a network drive, you must first load a\r\nSHELL.CFG file containing the line \"show dots = on\". Use\r\nIPX.COM to load the SHELL.CFG file.\r\n\r\nThere is also a 34-character limit for the PostScript target\r\ndirectories for the PFB and PFM files. If your target\r\ndirectory name exceeds this limit, use the MAP ROOT command\r\n(instead of the usual map command) to map the directory to a\r\nsimulated root directory.\r\n\r\n18. ATM and IBM 4029 Series Printers\r\n\r\nTo use ATM with one of the IBM 4029 series printers, you\r\nmust install version 3.01 or later of the 4029 printer\r\ndriver and version 1.65 or later of the Generic printer\r\ndriver. These versions are included with Windows 3.1. If\r\nyou are using Windows 3.0, contact your printer dealer or\r\nmanufacturer for the latest drivers.\r\n\r\n19. Troubleshooting\r\n\r\nManually installing ATM\r\n\r\nFor detailed instructions on how to manually install ATM\r\nversion 2.6, call the Adobe Fax Request Line at (408)986-\r\n6578 and request fax number 5120.\r\n\r\nJustified Text Exceeds Right Margin On Screen\r\n\r\nJustified text sometimes extends beyond the right margin on\r\nscreen, but prints correctly. This happens particularly at\r\nsmall point sizes. Two situations can cause this problem:\r\n\r\n* Windows uses a screen font for a font of a different\r\n size. Turning off the \"Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts\"\r\n option in the ATM Control Panel corrects this problem.\r\n* The problem is caused by round-off errors occurring when\r\n an application calculates the total width of a line of\r\n text. This problem cannot be corrected.\r\n\r\nDocuments Containing the Arial MT and TimesNewRomanPS Fonts\r\nPrint Slowly\r\n\r\nIf, after upgrading to Windows 3.1, you find that documents\r\ncontaining the fonts Arial MT and TimesNewRomanPS print more\r\nslowly on a PostScript printer, you can take the following\r\nsteps to improve printing speed. These fonts are often used\r\nas substitutes for the font Helvetica and Times when\r\nincluded when ATM is bundled with another product.\r\n\r\nTo make documents containing Arial MT and TimesNewRomanPS\r\nprint faster, add the following lines to both the [Aliases]\r\nsection and [Synonyms] section of your ATM.INI file.\r\n\r\n Helvetica=Arial MT\r\n Times=TimesNewRomanPS\r\n\r\nThe following two lines\r\n\r\n Helv=Arial MT\r\n Tms Rmn=TimesNewRomanPS\r\n\r\nshould already be present in both ATM.INI sections.\r\n\r\nError removing the fonts Helvetica and Times\r\nHelvetica and Times display upside-down\r\n\r\nIf you receive an error when removing the fonts Helvetica\r\nand Times or if the fonts Helvetica and Times display upside-\r\ndown, check the ATM Control Panel to see if all of these\r\nfonts are installed:\r\n\r\n* Helvetica\r\n* Times\r\n* Arial MT\r\n* TimesNewRomanPS.\r\n\r\nIf you have all these fonts, you must manually edit the\r\nATM.INI file and replace the following four lines in the\r\n[Aliases] and [Synonyms] sections\r\n\r\n Helv=Arial MT\r\n Helvetica=Arial MT\r\n Tms Rmn=TimesNewRomanPS\r\n Times=TimesNewRomanPS\r\n\r\nwith these two lines\r\n\r\n Helv=Helvetica\r\n Tms Rmn=Times.\r\n\r\n22. Acknowledgments\r\n\r\nThe ATM team would like to acknowledge the following people\r\nwho have contributed to the testing of ATM version 2.6: Jim\r\nAl-Shamma, Geoff Arnold, Louis Fuh, Curtis Kunz, Ernie\r\nMarch, Sasha Mobley, Grace Williams and Tokuro Yamashiro.\r\n\r\nAppendix A. ATM.INI Parameters\r\n\r\nThe following section contains technical information on ATM\r\nversion 2.6's initialization file. This file is divided up\r\ninto six sections: Fonts, Setup, Settings, Mono, Aliases,\r\nand Synonyms.\r\n\r\n[Fonts] This section contains a list of all of the fonts\r\n installed with ATM and the locations of the\r\n PostScript PFM and PFB files for each font. The\r\n fonts listed here are available to all non-\r\n PostScript printers for screen display and\r\n printing. The fonts available to PostScript\r\n printers are based on the PostScript soft font\r\n entries in the specific printer section of the\r\n WIN.INI file and the ROM-based fonts in the\r\n printer. If a font is listed in both WIN.INI and\r\n ATM.INI, ATM will rasterize the font to the\r\n screen. The printing of fonts to PostScript\r\n devices is solely the responsibility of the\r\n PostScript driver and Windows. ATM does not have\r\n to be active when printing to PostScript devices.\r\n\r\n Although a particular application will allow you\r\n to bold or italicize a certain font, your\r\n PostScript printer will not be able to render the\r\n bold or italic font unless an outline for the bold\r\n or italic font is available. On non-PostScript\r\n printers, however, ATM will synthesize a bold,\r\n italic or bold italic version of a font based on\r\n the roman outline if the outline of the desired\r\n font style is not present.\r\n \r\n When the ATM 2.6 Installer creates the [Fonts]\r\n section of the ATM.INI, it adds all the PostScript\r\n fonts found in the installation disk as well as\r\n any PostScript fonts listed as soft font entries\r\n for PostScript printers in the WIN.INI file. If\r\n you are upgrading from a previous version of ATM,\r\n the Installer also adds all the fonts listed in\r\n the current ATM.INI file.\r\n \r\n[Setup]\r\nPFM_Dir Default PFM directory for the ATM Control Panel\r\n when adding PostScript fonts.\r\nPFB_Dir Default PFB directory for the ATM Control Panel\r\n when adding PostScript fonts.\r\n\r\n[Settings]\r\nFontCache=256 Specifies the size of the font cache in\r\n kilobytes. This option is configurable\r\n through the ATM Control Panel. The\r\n default is 256k. Adobe recommends that\r\n this value not be set to more than 64k\r\n for each megabyte of physical memory.\r\nATM=On Determines whether or not ATM is loaded\r\n at Windows startup time.\r\nBitmapFonts=On This switch is set with the Use Pre-\r\n Built or Resident Fonts check box in the\r\n ATM Control Panel. When this switch is\r\n on, ATM defers to screen fonts, resident\r\n printer fonts, and printer soft fonts\r\n rather than rasterizing the font itself\r\n if the bitmap of the font requested in\r\n available. If you change this switch,\r\n you do not have to restart Windows for\r\n the change to take effect. You might,\r\n however, have to restart applications\r\n for the setting to take effect. The\r\n default setting is On.\r\nSynonymPSBegin=9 This value specifies the point size at\r\n which ATM starts using bitmap deferral\r\n for font pairs listed in both the\r\n Aliases and Synonyms sections. The\r\n default is 9. Adobe recommends that you\r\n do not change this setting.\r\nQLCDir Indicates the path of the ATM QuickLoad\r\n file, ATMFONTS.QLC.\r\n ATMFONTS.QLC contains a list of\r\n installed fonts and font metrics, which\r\n reduces Windows startup time. You can\r\n force ATM to rebuild this file by\r\n deleting the file with the MS-DOS DEL\r\n command and restarting Windows.\r\nVersion=2.6 This value enables the ATM Installer to\r\n determine the version of ATM when ATM is\r\n not active; otherwise, the Installer\r\n determines the version of ATM from the\r\n ATM DLL.\r\nDownloadFonts=On This switch instructs ATM to print text\r\n as soft fonts for Windows 3.1 printer\r\n drivers that support this feature.\r\n\r\nTmpDir=c:\\psfonts\\tmp These settings are used for Adobe\r\nTmpCount=00000000 Acrobat products and must not be\r\n deleted. The actual drive letter\r\n and directories referenced in this\r\n section must also exist.\r\n\r\n[Mono] This section contains a list of\r\nCourier=Yes monospaced fonts.\r\nLetterGothic=Yes\r\nPrestigeElite=Yes\r\nOrator=Yes\r\n\r\n[Aliases] This section tells ATM to substitute the font on\r\n the right of the equal sign for the font on the\r\n left of the equal sign when an application\r\n requests the font on the left of the equal\r\n sign. The ATM Installer defines aliases for the\r\n fonts Helv, Tms Rmn, Courier, Roman, and\r\n Modern.\r\n\r\n When the \"Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts\"\r\n option is turned on, ATM uses the resident\r\n bitmapped fonts for point sizes for which\r\n bitmaps exist. When The Use Pre-built or\r\n Resident option is turned off, ATM uses the\r\n PostScript outline font to rasterize all sizes\r\n of the aliased bitmapped font.\r\n \r\nHelv=Helvetica The fonts left of the equals sign\r\nTms Rmn=Times are Windows bitmapped fonts. By\r\nCourier=Courier using PostScript outline fonts,\r\n ATM can rasterize a smooth font\r\n when these fonts are requested at\r\n sizes not available in bitmapped\r\n form.\r\nRoman=Times These settings enable ATM to use\r\nModern=Helvetica PostScript outlines instead of\r\n the standard Windows vector\r\n fonts.\r\nCourier=Courier This setting is needed if an\r\n application requests the smallest\r\n available fixed-pitch font. If\r\n this line is not present, ATM\r\n provides some applications with a\r\n 1-point Courier font.\r\n\r\nHelv=Arial MT If you have received ATM bundled\r\nHelvetica=Arial MT with another application, you\r\nTms Rmn=TimesNewRomanPS might have the fonts Arial MT\r\nTimes=TimesNewRomanPS and TimesNewRomanPS instead the\r\n standard fonts Helvetica and\r\n Times. You should have these\r\n lines present in both the Aliases\r\n and Synonyms sections. These\r\n settings tell ATM to use internal\r\n printer fonts when printing Arial\r\n MT and TimesNewRomanPS to a\r\n PostScript printer. This reduces\r\n the time required to print\r\n documents and improves the\r\n quality of bold and italic text\r\n styles.\r\n\r\n If you have all four faces\r\n (Helvetica, Times, Arial MT and\r\n TimesNewRomanPS), you should use\r\n the font pairs Helv=Helvetica and\r\n Tms Rmn=Times in these sections.\r\n\r\n[Synonyms]\r\nHelv=Helvetica Unlike the font pairs in the\r\nTms Rmn=Times Aliases section, the font pairs\r\nCourier=Courier in the Synonyms are\r\n interchangeable. This means that\r\n when the font Helv is requested\r\n at a point size not available in\r\n bitmapped form, the font\r\n Helvetica will be used.\r\n\r\n In Windows 3.0 & 3.0a, when the\r\n font Helvetica is requested and a\r\n bitmapped Helv font of the exact\r\n size is available, ATM will use\r\n the Helv bitmap to display the\r\n font on the screen.\r\n\r\n In Windows 3.1, the screen\r\n fonts Helv and Tms Rmn have\r\n been replaced by MS Sans Serif\r\n and MS Serif, so screen font\r\n deferral does not apply.\r\n\r\n[Colors] This section may be added to\r\n the ATM.INI to override\r\n internal ATM defaults. The\r\n switch is global for all\r\n applications. While enabling\r\n this switch might be useful for\r\n a special purpose in a\r\n particular application, it can\r\n also produce unexpected results\r\n in other applications.\r\n\r\nPrintColorGraphics=Off This switch instructs ATM to\r\n print colored text as soft\r\n fonts under Windows 3.1 rather\r\n than as dithered graphics. The\r\n printer driver must support\r\n soft font creation for this\r\n switch to work. For most\r\n printer drivers, the resulting\r\n soft fonts print as black or\r\n white fonts."
