Disk Contents\r\n\r\nThe following files are found on your ATM disk(s):\r\n\r\nATM16.DLL Program file for Windows Standard mode\r\nATM32.DLL Program file for Windows 386 Enhanced mode\r\nATMSYS.DRV ATM System driver\r\nATMCNTRL.EXE ATM Control Panel\r\nINSTALL.EXE ATM Installer\r\nINSTALL.CNF ATM Installation configuration file\r\nPROGDISK (FONTDISK) Disk ID file\r\nREADME.TXT This file\r\nATM.CNF Configuration file (might not be present\r\n on upgrade disks)\r\n\r\nYour disk(s) might also contain a PSFONTS directory and a \r\nPCLFONTS directory. The PSFONTS directory contains PostScript \r\nFont Outline (PFB) files and Printer Font Metric (PFM) files. \r\nThe PCLFONTS directory contains PCL bitmapped font files which \r\nhave filename extensions of either SFP or SFL. The PCLFONTS \r\ndirectory also contains Printer Font Metric (PFM) files.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n2. Installation Requirements\r\n\r\nTo install ATM, you need a C:\\ drive and sufficient disk space \r\nfor the ATM software and fonts. The amount of disk space you \r\nneed depends on the number of fonts included with your ATM \r\npackage. The standard retail ATM package requires about 1 \r\nmegabyte of disk space.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n3. ATM.INI\r\n\r\nATM's initialization file, ATM.INI, is created during\r\ninstallation. It contains a list of fonts installed in ATM and\r\nother ATM program-related settings. For more technical\r\ninformation, see Appendix A at the end of this file.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4. ATM Control Panel\r\n\r\nThere is no longer a pre-defined limit to the number of fonts you \r\ncan install with the ATM Control Panel. Windows does, however, \r\nlimit initialization files (including the ATM.INI and the \r\nWIN.INI) to a size of 64K. If this limit is reached, Windows \r\ncannot open, read, or write properly to these INI files.\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.0 and 3.0a, Microsoft recommends keeping \r\ninitialization files smaller than 32k in size. Following this \r\nrecommendation, the maximum number of fonts that can be listed in \r\nATM.INI for Windows 3.0 or 3.0a is around 450 fonts. For Windows \r\n3.1, the only limit is the 64K maximum file size, which is large \r\nenough for about 900 fonts.\r\n\r\n\r\nFonts Listed in the ATM Control Panel\r\n\r\nThe more fonts you add with ATM, the longer it takes Windows \r\nto load. The exact time depends on the type of processor\r\nyou have and your system configuration. If you feel that Windows\r\nis taking too long to load, you may want to free up more memory\r\navailable to Windows and/or reduce the total number of fonts\r\ninstalled to a reasonable set of fonts you frequently use.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n5. PostScript Soft Font Limits for Windows 3.0 and 3.0a\r\n\r\nWhen you use the ATM Control Panel to add PostScript soft fonts, \r\nATM places entries in your WIN.INI file that tell Windows to \r\nautomatically download the fonts to your printer whenever you \r\nprint a document containing the fonts.\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.1, there is no longer a 150 font limit on the \r\nnumber of soft-font entries you can have for a PostScript \r\nprinter.\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.0 and 3.0a, however, the maximum number of soft-\r\nfont entries per PostScript printer WIN.INI entry is \r\napproximately 150. The exact number depends on your particular \r\nsystem configuration. This limit stems from the Windows 3.0 \r\nPostScript driver's inability to enumerate a large number of \r\nfonts. If you receive spurious printer-related error messages \r\nwhen starting Windows or switching to a PostScript printer, check \r\nthe number of soft fonts you have installed in the PostScript \r\nprinter section in the WIN.INI. You might have to manually \r\nremove these soft-font entries to correct the printing problem.\r\n\r\nIf you remove soft-font entries from the PostScript printer \r\nsection of the WIN.INI file, remember to adjust the line \r\n\"softfonts=nn\" to show the new total number of soft-font entries. \r\nFor example, if your PostScript printer section lists 150 soft \r\nfonts and you remove 25, the line should read \"softfonts=125\". \r\nAlso, the left side of the soft-font entries should number the \r\nremaining soft fonts continuously. For 125 soft-fonts, the \r\nentries should begin with \"softfont1=...\" and continue without \r\ninterruption through \"softfont125=...\"\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n6. Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts Option in the ATM Control\r\n Panel\r\n\r\nWhen you select the Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts check box,\r\nuses these fonts at print time instead of creating bitmapped \r\nfonts and sending them to your printer. Although ATM does not \r\nrequire restarting Windows when changing the Use Pre-built or \r\nResident Fonts option, it may be necessary to quit and restart \r\napplications for this option to take effect.\r\n\r\nYou may find that when this option is selected, resident fonts \r\nwill not be masked by your printer if a graphic image is placed \r\non top of the text. As an example, open an application that \r\nallows you to draw images over text, select the font Courier, and \r\ndraw a gray box on top of it. The font will be covered by the \r\ngray box on the screen. But with the Use Pre-built or Resident \r\nFonts option selected, your printer will print the text on top of \r\nthe gray box. (This type of behavior also occurs when you turn \r\nATM off.) When you clear the Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts \r\ncheck box, your text and graphic images will print as displayed \r\non-screen.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n7. ATM and Printing\r\n\r\nATM uses PostScript outline fonts to produce a smooth graphic\r\ndisplay of your fonts on-screen. The fonts available for use\r\ndepend on the printer you have selected in your application.\r\n\r\nFor non-PostScript printers, the fonts available are the internal \r\nprinter fonts, the Windows internal bitmapped fonts, and the \r\nfonts listed in the ATM Control Panel. At print time, ATM \r\ngenerates a graphic image of your text based on the PostScript \r\noutlines, and sends this image to your printer. If you have PCL \r\nbitmapped fonts installed for your printer, the PCL driver will \r\ndownload these soft fonts if you have checked the Use Pre-built \r\nor Resident Fonts option in the ATM Control Panel.\r\n\r\nFor PostScript printers, the fonts available are the fonts \r\nresident in the printer and the PostScript soft-font entries \r\nlisted in the printer's section in the WIN.INI file. When you \r\nuse the ATM Control Panel to add PostScript soft fonts, ATM adds \r\nsoft-font entries in the WIN.INI file for the currently installed \r\nPostScript printers. However, when you add a new PostScript \r\nprinter (or change printer ports), you may find that some of the \r\nsoft fonts listed in the ATM Control Panel do not appear in your \r\napplication font menus. This is because the PostScript soft-font \r\nentries in the WIN.INI file are missing for the new PostScript \r\nprinter (or the printer attached to a new port). To correct this \r\nproblem, simply use the ATM Control Panel to add the missing \r\nfonts again.\r\n\r\nWhen printing to a PostScript printer, ATM does not have to be \r\nactive because it does not have to rasterize any fonts. Windows \r\nand the PostScript driver download outline fonts to your \r\nPostScript printer.\r\n\r\n\r\nPrint Resolution\r\n\r\nFor the highest print quality, Adobe recommends you set your \r\nprinter and printer driver to the highest print resolution. \r\nCertain PCL printer drivers do not properly set the print \r\nresolution. They show 300 dpi resolution in the Windows Printer \r\nControl Panel even though they are set to a lower resolution.\r\n\r\nSome applications fail to print correctly when your PCL printer \r\nresolution is not set to 300 dpi. Excel 3.0a, for example, \r\nprints blank cells instead of ATM fonts if your PCL printer is \r\nnot set to 300 dpi.\r\n\r\nIf you suspect your PCL printer driver is not set to 300 dpi, set \r\nthe resolution to 75 dpi, save this option, and then set the \r\nresolution back to 300 dpi. (When your printer resolution is set \r\nto 300 dpi, the line \"prtresfac=0\" appears in the PCL printer \r\nentry in the WIN.INI file.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n8. Printer and Video Drivers\r\n\r\nFor the highest font rasterization quality, Adobe recommends you \r\nuse the latest Windows printer and video drivers.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n9. Application Notes\r\n\r\n\r\nCorel Draw Version 2.0 and Earlier\r\n\r\nThese versions of Corel Draw do not work with ATM.\r\n\r\n\r\nDesigner 3.1 and Charisma 2.1\r\n\r\nThe lines used for underlines and strikeouts may appear broken\r\nwhen using an ATM font. This is due the way these Micrografx\r\nproducts handle character placement.\r\n\r\nIf you rotate text at a 90 degree angle and then stretch it, you \r\nmay find that the font will not be properly resized. To avoid \r\nthis problem, first resize the font and then rotate it.\r\n\r\nRotating stretched text at a 180 degree angle may cause the last \r\nletters in the text string to overlap. In this case, first \r\nrotate the text by 180 degrees and then stretch it.\r\n\r\nRotated text at certain angles will sometimes print with expanded\r\ncharacter spacing on non-PostScript printers. Try using the\r\nPrint View option and selecting the entire page.\r\n\r\nAdobe is working with Micrografx to correct all these problems.\r\n\r\n\r\nHarvard Draw 1.0\r\n\r\nThis version of Harvard Draw does not work with ATM.\r\n\r\n\r\nHarvard Graphics 1.0 for Windows\r\n\r\nHarvard Graphics cannot rotate ATM fonts. Harvard Graphics uses \r\ninternal fonts for rotated text.\r\n\r\n\r\nMicrografx PostScript Driver\r\n\r\nThe Micrografx PostScript driver has a unique printer section\r\nstructure in the WIN.INI. PostScript soft fonts cannot be\r\ninstalled to this driver using the ATM Installer and Control\r\nPanel. You can, however, install your fonts through the\r\nMicrografx Printer Setup menu. See your Micrografx manual\r\nfor instructions.\r\n\r\n\r\nNorton Desktop for Windows 1.0\r\n\r\nDue to the different structure of Norton Desktop's application\r\ngroups, the ATM icon will not be properly installed into the Main\r\ngroup when running Norton as your desktop shell. You must\r\nmanually add the ATM Control Panel icon. The ATM Installer will,\r\nhowever, copy all of the necessary files to your system and will\r\nconfigure Windows to run ATM.\r\n\r\n\r\nPageMaker 4.0\r\n\r\nFor best results with ATM, set the \"Vector text above\" and\r\n\"Stretch text above\" limits in the Preferences dialog box to\r\n10000 pixels each.\r\n\r\n\r\nPowerPoint 2.0\r\n\r\nFor best results at small point sizes on screen, use the Windows \r\nFonts Control Panel to remove the \"Small Fonts\" font.\r\n\r\n\r\nVentura Publisher Windows Edition v. 3.0\r\n\r\nTo use ATM with Ventura 3.0, you must install the \"Windows\" patch\r\ndisk. You can receive this disk by contacting Ventura at (800)\r\n822-8221.\r\n\r\nThe fonts Helvetica and Times will not display correctly in\r\nReduced View.\r\n\r\nReversed text does not print correctly to non-PostScript\r\nprinters.\r\n\r\n\r\nWord for Windows 1.1a, 2.0, and 2.0a\r\n\r\nDouble underlines may print as one thick underline at point sizes\r\nlarger than 18 points. This is due to the method Word for\r\nWindows uses to perform double underlining.\r\n\r\nIn version 1.1a, the typeface used in the ruler and in the status\r\nbar may not be Helvetica. Word for Windows 1.1a uses the first \r\nvariable pitch sans-serif font available in the [Fonts] section \r\nof the ATM.INI file. To correct this problem, move Helvetica to \r\nthe top of the [Fonts] section in your ATM.INI file. Upgrading \r\nto Word for Windows version 2.0 and later also corrects this \r\nproblem.\r\n\r\n\r\nVarious Applications with Draft Mode Printing Feature\r\n\r\nSome applications which support draft mode printing do not print \r\ngraphics when they print in draft mode. Because ATM creates text \r\nas graphics, text might not print correctly in draft mode.\r\n\r\n\r\nVirus Protection Software\r\n\r\nSome virus protection software packages will not allow the ATM \r\nInstaller to replace previous versions of ATM software. If you \r\nhave this problem, first scan your hard drive for viruses. Then \r\ntemporarily disable your virus protection software while you \r\ninstall ATM. Remember to re-enable your virus protection \r\nsoftware and re-scan your hard disk after installing ATM.\r\n\r\n\r\nWordPerfect for Windows 5.1\r\n\r\nBecause WordPerfect does not use standard Windows font requests \r\nwhen using a WordPerfect printer driver, ATM does not work \r\nproperly with WordPerfect printer drivers. To use ATM with \r\nWordPerfect for Windows, use the standard Windows printer \r\ndrivers.\r\n\r\nWordPerfect for Windows does not allow Windows to display fonts\r\nproperly in preview mode.\r\n\r\nSome special characters in the ANSI character set (with values \r\nhigher than 128) do not print as displayed. See your Windows \r\ndocumentation for the ANSI character set.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n10. Novell Netware Considerations\r\n\r\nAlthough ATM is not a network application, you can print to\r\nnetwork printers using ATM. However, you have to configure the\r\nFile Contents section in your print job definition to specify \r\nbyte stream instead of text. (The byte stream option is required \r\nbecause ATM sends raster graphics to your non-PostScript \r\nprinter.)\r\n\r\nTo add fonts from a network drive, you must first load a \r\nSHELL.CFG file containing the line \"show dots = on\". Use IPX.COM \r\nto load the SHELL.CFG file.\r\n\r\nThere is also a 34-character limit for the PostScript target\r\ndirectories for the PFB and PFM files. If your target directory\r\nname exceeds this limit, use the map root command (instead of the\r\nusual map command) to map the directory to a simulated root\r\ndirectory.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n11. ATM and IBM 4029 Series Printers\r\n\r\nTo use ATM with one of the IBM 4029 series printers, you have to \r\ninstall version 3.01 or later of the 4029 printer driver and \r\nversion 1.65 of the Generic printer driver. These versions are \r\navailable with Windows 3.1. If you are using Windows 3.0, \r\ncontact your printer dealer or manufacturer for the latest \r\ndrivers.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n12. Troubleshooting\r\n\r\n\r\nJustified Text Exceeds Right Margin On Screen\r\n\r\nJustified text sometimes extends beyond the right margin on\r\nscreen, but prints correctly. This happens particularly at small\r\npoint sizes. Two situations can cause this problem:\r\n\r\n* Windows uses a screen font for a font of a different size. \r\nTurning off the Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts option in the ATM \r\nControl Panel corrects this problem.\r\n\r\n* The problem is caused by roundoff errors occurring between ATM \r\nfont metrics and how the particular application calculates the \r\ntotal width of a line of text. This problem cannot be corrected.\r\n\r\n\r\nDocuments Containing the Arial MT and TimesNewRomanPS Fonts Print\r\n Slowly\r\n\r\nIf, after upgrading to Windows 3.1, you find that documents \r\ncontaining the fonts Arial MT and TimesNewRomanPS print more \r\nslowly on a PostScript printer, you can take the following steps \r\nto improve printing speed.\r\n\r\nIf you are using the Arial MT font, add the following line to \r\nboth the [Aliases] section and [Synonyms] section of your ATM.INI \r\nfile.\r\n\r\nHelvetica=Arial MT\r\n\r\nIf you are using the TimesNewRomanPS font, add the following line \r\nto both the [Aliases] section and [Synonyms] section of your \r\nATM.INI file.\r\n\r\nTimes=TimesNewRomanPS\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAppendix A. ATM.INI Parameters\r\n\r\nThe following section contains technical information on ATM\r\nversion 2.02's initialization file. This file is divided up into\r\nsix sections: Fonts, Setup, Settings, Mono, Aliases, and \r\nSynonyms.\r\n\r\n[Fonts] This section contains a list of all of the fonts\r\n installed with ATM and the locations of the\r\n PostScript PFM and PFB files for each font. The fonts\r\n listed here are available to all non-PostScript\r\n printers for screen display and printing. The fonts\r\n available to PostScript printers are based on the\r\n PostScript soft-font entries in the specific printer\r\n section of the WIN.INI file and those internal to the\r\n PostScript printer driver. If a font is listed in both\r\n WIN.INI and ATM.INI, ATM will rasterize the font\r\n to the screen. The printing of fonts to PostScript\r\n devices is solely the responsibility of the PostScript\r\n driver and Windows. ATM does not have to be active\r\n when printing to PostScript devices.\r\n\r\n Another important point to remember about PostScript\r\n printers is that, although a particular application\r\n will allow you to bold or italicize a certain font,\r\n your PostScript printer will not be able to render the\r\n bold or italic font unless an outline for the bold or\r\n italic font is available. On non-PostScript printers,\r\n however, ATM will synthesize a bold, italic or bold\r\n italic version of a font based on the roman outline if\r\n the outline of the desired font style is not present.\r\n\r\n When the ATM 2.02 Installer creates the [Fonts] section\r\n of the ATM.INI, it adds all the PostScript fonts found\r\n in the installation disk as well as any PostScript\r\n fonts listed as soft-font entries for PostScript\r\n printers in the WIN.INI file. If you are upgrading\r\n from a previous version of ATM, the Installer also adds\r\n all the fonts listed in the current ATM.INI file.\r\n\r\n[Setup]\r\n\r\nPFM_Dir Default PFM directory for the ATM Control Panel when\r\n adding PostScript fonts. \r\n\r\nPFB_Dir Default PFB directory for the ATM Control Panel when\r\n adding PostScript fonts.\r\n\r\n[Settings]\r\n\r\nFontCache=96 The size of the font cache is configurable\r\n through the ATM Control Panel. The default is\r\n 96.\r\n\r\nATM=On Determines whether ATM will be loaded at \r\n Windows boot time.\r\n\r\nBitmapFonts=On This switch is set with the Use Pre-Built or\r\n Resident Fonts check box on the ATM Control\r\n Panel. If you change this switch, you do not\r\n have to restart Windows for the change to take\r\n effect. You may, however, have to restart\r\n applications for the setting to take effect.\r\n The default is On. ATM will defer to screen\r\n fonts, resident printer fonts, and printer soft\r\n fonts rather than rasterizing the font itself \r\n if the font requested by the application is\r\n available.\r\n\r\nSynonymPSBegin=9 This value determines the point size at which\r\n ATM will start using bitmap deferral for font\r\n pairs listed in both the Aliases and Synonyms\r\n sections. The default is 9. It is not\r\n recommended that this setting be changed.\r\n\r\nQLCDir Indicates the path of the QuickLoad file\r\n ATMFONTS.QLC, which contains a list of\r\n installed fonts and font metrics, thus reducing\r\n Windows boot time. You can force ATM to\r\n rebuild this file by deleting the file with the\r\n MS-DOS DEL command and restarting Windows.\r\n\r\nVersion=2.02 This value enables the ATM Installer to\r\n determine the version of ATM if ATM is not\r\n active; otherwise, the Installer determines the\r\n version of ATM from the DLL.\r\n\r\n[Mono]\r\nCourier=Yes This section contains a list of monospaced\r\nLetterGothic=Yes fonts.\r\nPrestigeElite=Yes\r\nOrator=Yes\r\n\r\n[Aliases] This section tells ATM to substitute the font \r\n on the right of the equal sign for the font on \r\n the left of the equal sign when an application\r\n requests the font on the left of the equal\r\n sign. The ATM Installer defines aliases for\r\n the Helv, Tms Rmn, Courier, Roman, and Modern\r\n bitmapped fonts.\r\n\r\n When the Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts option\r\n is turned on, ATM uses the resident bitmapped\r\n fonts for point sizes for which bitmaps exist.\r\n When The Use Pre-built or Resident option is\r\n turned off, ATM uses the PostScript outline \r\n font to rasterize all sizes of the aliased \r\n bitmapped font.\r\n\r\nHelv=Helvetica The fonts left of the equals sign are Windows\r\nTms Rmn=Times bitmapped fonts. By using PostScript outline \r\nCourier=Courier fonts, ATM can rasterize a smooth font when\r\n these fonts are requested at sizes not \r\n available in bitmapped form.\r\n\r\nRoman=Times These settings enable ATM to use PostScript\r\nModern=Helvetica outlines instead of the standard Windows vector\r\n fonts (which are sometimes called \"stick\"\r\n fonts).\r\n\r\nCourier=Courier This setting is needed if an application\r\n requests the smallest available fixed-pitch\r\n font. If this line is not present, ATM\r\n provides some applications with a 1-point\r\n Courier font.\r\n\r\nHelv=Arial MT For Windows 3.0, these settings\r\nTms Rmn=TimesNewRomanPS tell ATM to use internal printer fonts\r\n when printing Arial MT and\r\n TimesNewRomanPS to a PostScript printer.\r\n This reduces the time required to print\r\n documents and improves the quality of\r\n bold and italic style text.\r\n\r\n[Synonyms]\r\n\r\nHelv=Helvetica Unlike the font pairs in the Aliases section,\r\nTms Rmn=Times the font pairs in the Synonyms are\r\nCourier=Courier interchangeable. This means that when the font\r\n Helv is requested at a point size not available\r\n in bitmapped form, the font Helvetica will be\r\n used. However, when the font Helvetica is\r\n requested and a bitmapped Helv font of the \r\n exact size is available, ATM will use the Helv \r\n bitmap to display the font on the screen; this\r\n increases performance."
