The PSFONTS directory contains PostScript \r\nFont Outline (PFB) files and Printer Font Metrics (PFM) files. \r\nThe PCLFONTS directory contains PCL bitmapped font files, which \r\nhave filename extensions of either SFP or SFL. The PCLFONTS \r\ndirectory also contains Printer Font Metrics (PFM) files.\r\n\r\n\r\n2. Installation Requirements\r\n\r\nTo install ATM, you need a c:\\ drive and sufficient disk space \r\nfor the ATM software and fonts. The amount of disk space you \r\nneed depends on the number of fonts included with your ATM \r\npackage. The standard retail ATM package requires about 1.2 \r\nmegabytes of free disk space. The default directory for the \r\nPostScript fonts is c:\\psfonts. You can, however, install the \r\nfont files in any directory on any drive.\r\n\r\n\r\n3. What's New in Version 2.5\r\n\r\nVersion 2.5 of ATM introduces three new features:\r\n\r\n* ATM now uses soft fonts that are created on-the-fly by certain \r\n Windows 3.1 printer drivers; this feature speeds printing for \r\n PCL printers and other printers with drivers that support soft \r\n font creation\r\n* ATM now adds and removes fonts without requiring that you \r\n restart Windows\r\n* When you install fonts, ATM lets you specify whether or not \r\n the fonts are automatically downloaded to PostScript printers \r\n when you print\r\n\r\nThe following paragraphs briefly describe these new features.\r\n\r\n* When running with Windows 3.1, ATM 2.5 prints soft fonts for \r\n printers whose drivers support on-the-fly soft font \r\n creation. These printers include the HP LaserJet family of \r\n printers and IBM Lexmark printers. This feature does not \r\n work with all printers that support downloaded printer soft \r\n fonts. The printer's Windows 3.1 printer driver must also \r\n support on-the-fly soft font creation for this feature to \r\n work. To determine whether a Windows 3.1 printer driver \r\n supports on-the-fly soft font creation, check the Printer \r\n Setup Options dialog box in the Windows Printer Control \r\n Panel. If you do not see a \"Print TrueType as Graphics\" \r\n option, the driver most likely cannot create printer soft \r\n fonts on-the-fly.\r\n\r\n* ATM 2.5 now adds and removes fonts without requiring that \r\n you restart Windows. When you use ATM to add and remove \r\n fonts while other applications are running, however, the ATM \r\n font changes are not always automatically available in the \r\n application font menus. Some applications, such as Windows \r\n Write and Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows, update their available \r\n font lists immediately, while others, such as Lotus AmiPro \r\n 3.0 and Aldus PageMaker 4.0, require that you re-select your \r\n printer before the ATM font changes appear in font menus. A \r\n few applications, such as Adobe Illustrator 4.0 and \r\n QuattroPro for Windows 1.0, build their font menus when they \r\n are started. You must restart these applications to see ATM \r\n font changes in their font menus.\r\n\r\n* When you add or remove fonts, the ATM 2.5 Control Panel \r\n automatically adds and removes soft font entries from the \r\n [PostScript, portname] sections in WIN.INI. (The \r\n [PostScript, portname] sections contain settings for \r\n PostScript printers.) If you change printer ports, however, \r\n Windows creates a new [PostScript, portname] section and \r\n does not transfer font entries from other sections. You \r\n must reinstall your fonts to add soft font entries to the \r\n new [PostScript, portname] section. See \"Install As \r\n Autodownload Fonts for the PostScript Driver\" later in this \r\n README files for details.\r\n\r\n\r\nA number of additional changes have been made in version 2.5:\r\n\r\n* ATM defers to resident and cartridge DeskJet fonts when you \r\n use the Windows 3.1 DeskJet driver that works with the \r\n Universal Printer driver.\r\n* ATM no longer disables application printing when you use the \r\n Windows 3.1 Generic Text driver (TTY.DRV). This driver \r\n supports only a single internal font.\r\n* Rotated text in graphics now displays correctly in Lotus \r\n 1-2-3 for Windows.\r\n* ATM text in Lotus Freelance now prints correctly when any \r\n Windows 3.1 PCL printer driver is set up to print at lower \r\n print resolutions.\r\n* ATM now prints correctly to PCL printers when used with \r\n Aldus IntelliDraw.\r\n* The ATM 2.5 Installer installs ATM correctly when MoreFonts \r\n is present on the system.\r\n\r\n\r\n4. ATM.INI\r\n\r\nATM's initialization file, ATM.INI, is created during \r\ninstallation. It contains a list of fonts installed in ATM and \r\nother ATM program-related settings. See Appendix A at the end \r\nof this README file for more technical information.\r\n\r\n\r\n5. ATM Control Panel\r\n\r\nThere is no longer a pre-defined limit to the number of fonts \r\nyou can install with the ATM Control Panel. Windows does, \r\nhowever, limit initialization files (including the ATM.INI and \r\nthe WIN.INI) to a size of 64K. If this limit is reached, \r\nWindows cannot open, read, or write properly to these INI files.\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.0 and 3.0a, Microsoft recommends keeping \r\ninitialization files smaller than 32k in size. Following this \r\nrecommendation, the maximum number of fonts that can be listed \r\nin ATM.INI for Windows 3.0 or 3.0a is around 450 fonts. For \r\nWindows 3.1, the only limit is the 64K maximum file size, which \r\nis large enough for about 900 fonts.\r\n\r\nMany applications limit the number of fonts that can be \r\ndisplayed in their font menus. For example, an application font \r\nmenu might show only 200 fonts even though you have installed \r\nmore than 200 ATM fonts.\r\n\r\nThe more fonts you add with ATM, the longer it takes Windows to \r\nstart. The exact time required for Windows to start depends on \r\nthe type of processor you have and your system configuration. \r\nTo reduce the time it takes Windows to start, make more memory \r\navailable to Windows by, for example, removing Terminate and \r\nStay Resident (TSR) programs. You can also reduce the time it \r\ntakes Windows to start by removing ATM fonts you use \r\ninfrequently.\r\n\r\n\r\n6. PostScript Soft Font Limits for Windows 3.0 and 3.0a\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.1, there is no longer a 150 font limit on the \r\nnumber of soft-font entries you can have for a PostScript \r\nprinter. For Windows 3.0 and 3.0a, however, the maximum number \r\nof soft-font entries per PostScript printer WIN.INI entry is \r\napproximately 150. The exact number depends on your particular \r\nsystem configuration. If you receive spurious printer-related \r\nerror messages when starting Windows or switching to a \r\nPostScript printer, you might have too many soft font entries in \r\nthe printer's WIN.INI entry. To correct the problem, try using \r\nthe ATM Control Panel to remove soft fonts you don't normally \r\nuse.\r\n\r\nIf you manually remove soft-font entries from the PostScript \r\nprinter section of the WIN.INI file, remember to adjust the line \r\n\"softfonts=nn\" to show the new total number of soft-font \r\nentries. The ATM Control Panel automatically renumbers soft-\r\nfont entries in WIN.INI when you remove fonts. ATM cannot, \r\nhowever, correct misnumbered font entries.\r\n\r\nThe Microsoft Windows 3.1 PostScript driver lets you use a \r\nsynthesized italic style for a PostScript font even if the \r\noutline font (PFB) file for the italic font is not present on \r\nthis system. Windows, however, cannot provide the PostScript \r\ndriver with the correct font metrics for a synthesized italic \r\nface, so the font is displayed with expanded character spacing. \r\nAlso, PostScript printers print the Roman (non-italic) face for \r\nthe synthesized italic face when you print.\r\n\r\n\r\n7. Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts\r\n\r\nWhen you select the Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts option, ATM \r\nlets PCL printer drivers use pre-built or printer-resident fonts \r\nto print documents. When you clear the Use Pre-built or Resident \r\nFonts check box, ATM creates characters for PCL printer drivers \r\nto print even when pre-built or printer-resident fonts are \r\navailable.\r\n\r\nAlthough ATM does not require that you restart Windows after you \r\nchange the Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts option, you might \r\nhave to quit and restart applications for this option to take \r\neffect.\r\n\r\nIf you are using Windows 3.1 with printer drivers that allow \r\nsoft fonts to be created on-the-fly (such as the PCL drivers), \r\nyou might want to turn this option off to speed printing. It is \r\nmore efficient for a printer driver to create a soft font on-\r\nthe-fly than to download a pre-built font. You can see if you \r\nhave any pre-built fonts installed for your PCL printer by \r\nchecking the printer driver's Fonts dialog box. To display the \r\ndriver's Fonts dialog box, choose Fonts in the driver's Printer \r\nSetup dialog box.\r\n\r\nWhen Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts option is selected, you \r\nmight find the characters of a printer-resident or soft font \r\nthat you place beneath a graphic image print on top of the \r\nimage. To see an example of this problem, open an application \r\nthat lets you draw images over text, select the Courier font, \r\ntype some text, and draw a gray box on top of the text. The \r\nfont is covered by the gray box on the screen. Now print with \r\nthe Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts option selected to see if \r\nyour printer prints the text on top of the gray box. If the \r\ntext prints on top of the box, you will also have this problem \r\nwhen you turn ATM off. To correct this problem, clear the Use \r\nPre-built or Resident Fonts check box.\r\n\r\nIf you are using a printer driver that creates soft fonts on-\r\nthe-fly (such as the PCL printer drivers), you might have to \r\nselect the \"Print ATM fonts as graphics\" option for graphic \r\nobjects and text to print correctly.\r\n\r\n\r\n8. Print ATM Fonts as Graphics\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.1 and later, ATM takes advantage of a new feature \r\navailable with some printer drivers that lets ATM use the driver \r\nto create soft fonts on-the-fly. Creating soft fonts on-the-fly \r\nspeeds printing. Printer drivers that create soft fonts on-the-\r\nfly include the drivers for the HP LaserJet family of printers \r\nand the driver for the IBM Lexmark printers.\r\n\r\nThe Print ATM Fonts as Graphics option controls whether or not \r\nATM uses the soft font creation feature when it is available. \r\nBy default, the Print ATM Fonts as Graphics option is cleared \r\nand ATM uses the soft font creation feature. When you select \r\nthe Print ATM Fonts as Graphics option, however, ATM prints \r\ncharacters as graphics. Selecting the Print ATM Fonts as \r\nGraphics option can solve some printing problems, such as when \r\nthe text you place beneath a graphic image prints on top of the \r\ngraphic.\r\n\r\nWhen you change the Print ATM Fonts as Graphics option while \r\nother applications are running, the change usually takes effect \r\nimmediately. In a few applications, such as Word for Windows \r\n2.0 for example, you must re-select your printer before the ATM \r\nprint mode change takes effect.\r\n\r\nIf you set up your printer driver to print TrueType fonts as \r\ngraphics, ATM prints fonts as graphics regardless of how the \r\nPrint ATM Fonts as Graphics option is set.\r\n\r\nSome applications, such as CorelDraw 3.0, always print text as \r\ngraphics.\r\n\r\n\r\n9. Install As Autodownload Fonts for the PostScript Driver\r\n\r\nThe Microsoft PostScript printer driver uses the [PostScript, \r\nportname] section in the WIN.INI file to find the PostScript \r\nsoft fonts installed on the system. As an example, the \r\nfollowing [PostScript, portname] section shows two soft fonts \r\ninstalled for a PostScript printer connected to the parallel \r\nport LPT1.\r\n\r\n[PostScript, LPT1]\r\nsoftfonts=2\r\nsoftfont1=c:\\psfonts\\pfm\\tkrg______.pfm;c:\\psfonts\\tkrg____.pfb\r\nsoftfont2=c:\\psfonts\\pfm\\tkb_______.pfm;c:\\psfonts\\tkb_____.pfb\r\n\r\nEach of these soft font entries is made up of two parts:\r\n\r\n* The first part is the path and file name of the soft font's \r\n printer font metrics (PFM) file\r\n\r\n* The second part is the path and file name of the soft font's \r\n outline (PFB) file\r\n\r\nThe PFM file part is necessary for all PostScript fonts whose \r\ncharacter metrics are not hard-coded in the PostScript driver. \r\nThe PFB file part is needed only when you want the driver to \r\ndownload the font outline with every print job.\r\n\r\nTo set up the Microsoft PostScript driver to automatically \r\ndownload a font at print time, install the font with the \r\n\"Install as autodownload fonts for the PostScript driver\" option \r\nselected. When this option is selected, ATM adds both the PFM \r\nand PFB parts of the soft font entry.\r\n\r\nYou must also select the \"Install as autodownload fonts for the \r\nPostScript driver\" option if you are installing the standard \r\nBase35 fonts for a printer that does not contain them. The \r\nBase35 fonts (available with the Adobe PlusPack and the \r\nPostScript Type Cartridge) are: AvantGarde, Bookman, Courier, \r\nHelvetica, Helvetica Narrow, NewCenturySchoolbook, Palatino, \r\nSymbol, Times, ZapfChancery, and ZapfDingbats. Most, but not \r\nall, newer PostScript printers contain the Base35 fonts.\r\n\r\nIf you are adding fonts to ATM that are already resident in the \r\nprinter, you can uncheck this option to instruct the printer \r\ndriver not to send the font outline files to the printer at \r\nprint time. With the \"Install as autodownload fonts for the \r\nPostScript driver\" option unchecked, ATM adds only the PFM part \r\nof the soft-font entries in WIN.INI. You should also uncheck \r\nthis option for fonts you plan to manually download to the \r\nprinter.\r\n\r\nHow ATM 2.5 Adds Base35 Fonts\r\n\r\nWhen the \"Install as autodownload fonts for the PostScript \r\ndriver\" option is unchecked, ATM does not add soft font entries \r\nto WIN.INI for the Base35 soft fonts. The soft font entries for \r\nthese fonts are not needed because the font metrics for these \r\nfonts are hard-coded in the driver. If soft font entries for \r\nthe Base35 fonts are present in WIN.INI, however, they are \r\nignored by the PostScript driver at print time if the Base35 \r\nfonts are resident in the printer. In other words, the \r\nPostScript driver does not download the outlines of these fonts \r\nif they are already present on the printer. The only exception \r\nto this rule is for the Bookman font. If a Bookman PFB entry is \r\npresent in the WIN.INI, the driver downloads the outline file at \r\nprint time. To correct this problem and to force the driver to \r\nuse the Bookman font resident in the printer, re-add the four \r\nfaces of Bookman with the \"Install as autodownload fonts for the \r\nPostScript driver\" option unchecked\r\n\r\n\r\n10. ATM and Printing\r\n\r\nATM uses PostScript outline fonts to produce a smooth graphic \r\ndisplay of your fonts on-screen. The fonts available for use \r\ndepend on the printer you have selected in your application.\r\n\r\nThe fonts available for non-PostScript printers are the printer-\r\nresident fonts, the Windows internal bitmapped fonts, the \r\nTrueType fonts installed on the system (for Windows 3.1), and \r\nthe PostScript fonts listed in the ATM Control Panel. \r\n\r\nFor PostScript printers, the fonts available are the printer-\r\nresident fonts, the TrueType fonts installed on the system (for \r\nWindows 3.1), and the PostScript soft-font entries listed in the \r\nprinter's [PostScript, portname] section in the WIN.INI file. \r\nWhen you print to a PostScript printer, ATM does not have to be \r\nactive because it does not have to rasterize any fonts. Windows \r\nand the PostScript driver download outline fonts to your \r\nPostScript printer.\r\n\r\nPrint Resolution\r\n\r\nFor the highest print quality, Adobe recommends you set up your \r\nprinter to print at the highest resolution available. Certain \r\nPCL printer drivers do not properly set the print resolution. \r\nThey might appear to be set at 300 dpi resolution in the Windows \r\nPrinter Control Panel even though they are set to a lower \r\nresolution. Some applications fail to print correctly when your \r\nPCL printer resolution is not set to 300 dpi. Excel 3.0a, for \r\nexample, prints blank cells instead of ATM fonts when printing \r\nATM fonts as graphics and your PCL printer is not set to 300 \r\ndpi. If you suspect your PCL printer driver is not set to 300 \r\ndpi, set the resolution to 75 dpi, save this option, and then \r\nset the resolution back to 300 dpi. When your printer \r\nresolution is set to 300 dpi, the line \"prtresfac=0\" appears in \r\nthe PCL printer entry in the WIN.INI file.\r\n\r\nColored Text\r\n\r\nATM generates a graphic image of colored text regardless of the \r\nATM print mode (soft font or graphics) set with the Print ATM \r\nFonts as Graphics option. To force ATM to generate black or \r\nwhite soft fonts for monochrome printers and color soft fonts \r\nfor printers such as the HP PaintJet 300xl, add the following \r\n[Colors] section to your ATM.INI file.\r\n\r\n[Colors]\r\nPrintColorGraphics=Off\r\n\r\nSee Appendix A for a description of this setting. Be very \r\ncareful when you change ATM.INI. If you make a mistake, you can \r\nmake it impossible for ATM to start.\r\n\r\n\r\n11. Printer and Video Drivers\r\n\r\nFor the highest font rasterization quality, Adobe recommends you \r\nuse the latest Windows printer and video drivers. If you are \r\nusing the Microsoft Windows 3.1 DeskJet driver version 1.2, make \r\nsure to use the Universal Printer driver dated 06/29/92. \r\n\r\n\r\n12. Installing Fonts from the Adobe PlusPack and Adobe\r\n PostScript and Type Cartridges\r\n\r\nInstalling fonts from the Adobe PlusPack or for the Adobe \r\nPostScript or Adobe Type Cartridge requires that you insert the \r\ndifferent font disks many times. To avoid having to repeatedly \r\ninsert font disks, follow these steps:\r\n\r\n 1. Create a temporary directory on your hard disk.\r\n\r\n 2. Copy all the files from all the font disks to the temporary \r\n directory.\r\n\r\n 3. Start the ATM Control Panel and choose Add. The Add ATM \r\n Fonts dialog box appears.\r\n\r\n 4. Using the Directories list box, open the temporary \r\n directory. The names of all the fonts appear in the \r\n Available Fonts list.\r\n\r\n 5. Select the fonts you want to add and either accept the \r\n default target directories or enter the names of the \r\n PostScript font directories you are using.\r\n\r\n 6. Choose Add. The fonts are added and you are returned to \r\n the ATM Control Panel.\r\n\r\n 7. Choose OK to close the ATM Control Panel.\r\n\r\n 8. Delete all the files in the temporary directory; then \r\n delete the temporary directory.\r\n\r\n\r\n13. Installing ATM in the IBM OS/2 Windows Compatibility Box\r\n\r\nBefore installing ATM version 2.5 over an existing version of \r\nATM in the IBM OS/2 Windows Compatibility box, you must first \r\nedit the Boot section of your Windows SYSTEM.INI file. Replace \r\nthe two lines \r\n\r\n SYSTEM.DRV=ATMSYS.DRV\r\n ATM.SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV\r\n\r\nwith this line\r\n\r\n SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV\r\n\r\nAfter changing the SYSTEM.INI file, start Windows and install \r\nATM as instructed in the manual. Be very careful changing the \r\nSYSTEM.INI file. If you make a make a mistake, you can make it \r\nimpossible for Windows to start.\r\n\r\n\r\n14. Application Notes\r\n\r\nWhen you add or remove a font while an application is active, \r\nthe application font menus are not always updated automatically. \r\nIf you add or remove a font while one of the following \r\napplications is active,\r\n\r\n AmiPro 3.0, Freehand 3.0, Freelance 1.0, PageMaker 4.0, \r\n Ventura Publisher for Windows, and WordPerfect 5.1.for \r\n Windows \r\n\r\nyou must re-select your printer to update the application's font \r\nmenu.\r\n\r\nAdobe Illustrator 4.0 \r\n\r\nIf you have Illustrator 4.0 and add or remove a font, you must \r\nrestart Windows for font changes to take effect in Illustrator.\r\n\r\nIf you are using the latest version of the Adobe Enumerator, you \r\nneed only restart Illustrator to see ATM font changes. Make \r\nsure Illustrator is closed, however, before using ATM to add or \r\nremove fonts.\r\n\r\nThe two enumerator files PSENUM.DLL and RUN_ENUM.EXE, which \r\nIllustrator uses to register ATM font changes, are located in \r\nthe Windows system directory. If your enumerator files are \r\ndated 7/17/92 or earlier, you need to obtain the most recent \r\nversions of these files. You can receive the updates to these \r\nfiles free of charge by contacting Adobe Customer Support at \r\n(415) 961-4992. You can also download these files from the \r\nAdobe CompuServe forum.\r\n\r\nIf you are using Enumerator files dated 7/17/92 or earlier, you \r\nhave to restart Windows for ATM font changes to take effect.\r\n\r\n\r\nCorelDraw!\r\n\r\nCorelDraw! 3.0 now supports ATM fonts. Adobe strongly \r\nrecommends that you obtain the maintenance release version 3.0b. \r\nYou must restart CorelDraw! for ATM font changes to take effect. \r\nCorelDraw! version 2.0 does not support ATM fonts. \r\n\r\n\r\nDesigner 3.1 and Charisma 2.1\r\n\r\nThe lines used for underlines and strikeouts may appear broken \r\nwhen using an ATM font. This is due the way these Micrografx \r\nproducts handle character placement.\r\n\r\nIf you rotate text at a 90 degree angle and then stretch it, you \r\nmight find that the font will not be properly resized. To avoid \r\nthis problem, first resize the font and then rotate it.\r\n\r\nRotating stretched text at a 180 degree angle might cause the \r\nlast letters in the text string to overlap. To correct this \r\nproblem, first rotate the text by 180 degrees and then stretch \r\nit.\r\n\r\nRotated text at certain angles will sometimes print with \r\nexpanded character spacing on non-PostScript printers. To \r\ncorrect this problem, try using the Print View option and \r\nselecting the entire page.\r\n\r\n\r\nFaceLift for Windows\r\n\r\nFaceLift for Windows modifies the printer entries in the \r\nWIN.INI. If FaceLift is installed, the ATM Installer and \r\nControl Panel do not recognize the installed PostScript printers \r\nand cannot add PostScript soft-font entries for these printers. \r\nBefore adding fonts for PostScript printers, you must first \r\ntemporarily disable the \"Print with FaceLift\" option in FaceLift \r\nControl Panel. After the fonts have been installed, you can re-\r\nenable \"Print with FaceLift\" option.\r\n\r\n\r\nHarvard Draw 1.01\r\n\r\nHarvard Draw 1.01 support ATM fonts. You must restart the \r\napplication for ATM font changes to take effect.\r\n\r\n\r\nHarvard Graphics 1.01 for Windows\r\n\r\nHarvard Graphics cannot rotate ATM fonts. Harvard Graphics uses \r\nits own internal scalable fonts for all rotated text. \r\n\r\nIf you are using Harvard Graphics and ATM with a high-resolution \r\nvideo driver, you must obtain the maintenance upgrade version \r\n1.021 or higher.\r\n\r\nIf you make ATM font changes while Harvard Draw is running, you \r\nmust select another printer driver and switch back to the \r\noriginal driver for the ATM font changes to take effect.\r\n\r\n\r\nMicrografx PostScript Driver\r\n\r\nThe Micrografx PostScript driver has a non-standard printer \r\nsection structure in the WIN.INI. PostScript soft fonts cannot \r\nbe installed to this driver using the ATM Installer and Control \r\nPanel. You can, however, install your fonts through the \r\nMicrografx Printer Setup menu. See your Micrografx manual for \r\ninstructions.\r\n\r\n\r\nNorton Desktop for Windows 2.0\r\n\r\nDue to the different structure of Norton Desktop's application \r\ngroups, the ATM icon might not be properly installed into the \r\nMain group when you are running Norton as your desktop shell. \r\nIf this occurs, you must manually add the ATM Control Panel \r\nicon. The ATM Installer will, however, copy all of the \r\nnecessary files to your system and will configure Windows to run \r\nATM. See the Norton Desktop manual for instructions on how to \r\ninstall a new icon in a group.\r\n\r\n\r\nQuattro Pro for Windows 1.0\r\n\r\nYou must restart this application for ATM font changes to take \r\neffect.\r\n\r\n\r\nPageMaker 4.0\r\n\r\nFor best results with ATM, set the \"Vector text above\" and \r\n\"Stretch text above\" limits in the Preferences dialog box to \r\n10000 pixels each.\r\n\r\nIf you make ATM font changes while PageMaker is running, you \r\nmust re-select your printer for the ATM font changes to take \r\neffect.\r\n\r\n\r\nTypeAlign 2.0\r\n\r\nIf you receive the error message \"Application requested abnormal \r\ntermination\" after installing TypeAlign under Windows 3.1, you \r\nmust manually remove the entry TALGNDLL.EXE from the load line \r\nof the WIN.INI file. TALGNDLL.EXE is not compatible with \r\nWindows 3.1. The Load= line in the WIN.INI file is in the \r\n[windows] section. Be very careful when you change WIN.INI. If \r\nyou make a mistake, Windows will not work correctly. TypeAlign \r\n2.1 corrects this problem.\r\n\r\n\r\nVentura Publisher Windows Edition \r\n\r\nAdobe recommends using version 4.1. For upgrade information, \r\nplease contact Ventura at (800) 822-8221.\r\n\r\nThe fonts Helvetica and Times do not display correctly in \r\nReduced View.\r\n\r\nIf you make ATM font changes while Ventura Publisher is running, \r\nyou must re-select your printer for the ATM font changes to take \r\neffect.\r\n\r\n\r\nWord for Windows 2.0a\r\n\r\nDouble underlines may print as one thick underline at point \r\nsizes larger than 18 points. This is due to the method Word for \r\nWindows uses to perform double underlining.\r\n\r\nSmart quotes (characters Alt+0147 and Alt+0148) might print as \r\ndouble single quotes with some printer drivers. The generic \r\nbullet character (Alt+0149) might print as a lowercase o.\r\n\r\n\r\nVarious Applications with Draft Mode Printing Feature\r\n\r\nSome applications which support draft mode printing do not print \r\ngraphics when they print in draft mode. When ATM is set up to \r\nprint ATM fonts as graphics, text might not print correctly in \r\ndraft mode. To correct this problem, clear the Print ATM Fonts \r\nas Graphics option in the ATM Control Panel.\r\n\r\n\r\nVarious Font Management Utilities\r\n\r\nSome font management utilities such as FontMinder 1.0 and the \r\nfont conversion utility AllType automatically update the ATM.INI \r\nfile. You must restart Windows for font changes in the ATM.INI \r\nfile introduced by these utilities to take effect.\r\n\r\n\r\nVirus Protection Software\r\n\r\nSome virus protection software packages do not allow the ATM \r\nInstaller to replace previous versions of ATM software. If you \r\nhave this problem, first scan your hard drive for viruses. Then \r\ntemporarily disable your virus protection software while you \r\ninstall ATM. Remember to re-enable your virus protection \r\nsoftware and re-scan your hard disk after installing ATM.\r\n\r\n\r\nWordPerfect for Windows 5.1\r\n\r\nATM requires the standard Windows printer drivers in order to \r\nprint ATM text. You cannot print ATM fonts with the WordPerfect \r\nprinter drivers, unless you also use a third-party type utility \r\nsuch as PrimeType from LaserTools. \r\n\r\nWordPerfect for Windows uses its own screen fonts for preview, \r\nso ATM is not active in WordPerfect preview mode\r\n\r\nSome special characters in the ANSI character set (with values \r\nhigher than 128) do not print as displayed. See your Windows \r\ndocumentation for the ANSI character set.\r\n\r\n\r\n15. Novell Netware Considerations\r\n\r\nAlthough ATM is not a network application, you can print to \r\nnetwork printers using ATM. However, you must configure the \r\nFile Contents section in your print job definition to specify \r\nByte stream instead of Text. The Byte stream option is required \r\nbecause ATM sends raster graphics to non-PostScript printers.\r\n\r\nTo add fonts from a network drive, you must first load a \r\nSHELL.CFG file containing the line \"show dots = on\". Use \r\nIPX.COM to load the SHELL.CFG file.\r\n\r\nThere is also a 34-character limit for the PostScript target \r\ndirectories for the PFB and PFM files. If your target directory \r\nname exceeds this limit, use the MAP ROOT command (instead of \r\nthe usual map command) to map the directory to a simulated root \r\ndirectory.\r\n\r\n\r\n16. ATM and IBM 4029 Series Printers\r\n\r\nTo use ATM with one of the IBM 4029 series printers, you must \r\ninstall version 3.01 or later of the 4029 printer driver and \r\nversion 1.65 or later of the Generic printer driver. These \r\nversions are included with Windows 3.1. If you are using \r\nWindows 3.0, contact your printer dealer or manufacturer for the \r\nlatest drivers.\r\n\r\n\r\n17. Troubleshooting\r\n\r\nJustified Text Exceeds Right Margin On Screen\r\n\r\nJustified text sometimes extends beyond the right margin on \r\nscreen, but prints correctly. This happens particularly at \r\nsmall point sizes. Two situations can cause this problem:\r\n\r\n* Windows uses a screen font for a font of a different size. \r\n Turning off the Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts option in the\r\n ATM Control Panel corrects this problem.\r\n* The problem is caused by round-off errors occurring when an \r\n application calculates the total width of a line of text. \r\n This problem cannot be corrected.\r\n\r\n\r\nDocuments Containing the Arial MT and TimesNewRomanPS Fonts \r\nPrint Slowly\r\n\r\nIf, after upgrading to Windows 3.1, you find that documents \r\ncontaining the fonts Arial MT and TimesNewRomanPS print more \r\nslowly on a PostScript printer, you can take the following steps \r\nto improve printing speed. These fonts are often used as \r\nsubstitutes for the font Helvetica and Times when included when \r\nATM is bundled with another product.\r\n\r\nTo make documents containing Arial MT and TimesNewRomanPS print \r\nfaster, add the following lines to both the [Aliases] section \r\nand [Synonyms] section of your ATM.INI file.\r\n\r\n Helvetica=Arial MT\r\n Times=TimesNewRomanPS\r\n\r\nThe following two lines\r\n\r\n Helv=Arial MT\r\n Tms Rmn=TimesNewRomanPS\r\n\r\nshould already be present in both ATM.INI sections.\r\n\r\n\r\nHelvetica and Times display upside-down.\r\n\r\nIf the fonts Helvetica and Times display upside-down, check the \r\nATM Control Panel to see if all of these fonts are installed:\r\n\r\n* Helvetica\r\n* Times\r\n* Arial MT \r\n* TimesNewRomanPS.\r\n\r\nIf you have all these fonts, you must manually edit the ATM.INI \r\nfile and replace the following four lines in the [Aliases] and \r\n[Synonyms] sections\r\n\r\n Helv=Arial MT\r\n Helvetica=Arial MT\r\n Tms Rmn=TimesNewRomanPS\r\n Times=TimesNewRomanPS\r\n\r\nwith these two lines\r\n\r\n Helv=Helvetica\r\n Tms Rmn=Times.\r\n\r\n\r\n18. The fonts listed \r\n here are available to all non-PostScript printers for \r\n screen display and printing. The fonts available to \r\n PostScript printers are based on the PostScript \r\n soft-font entries in the specific printer section of \r\n the WIN.INI file and the ROM-based fonts in the \r\n printer. If a font is listed in both WIN.INI and \r\n ATM.INI, ATM will rasterize the font to the screen. \r\n The printing of fonts to PostScript devices is solely \r\n the responsibility of the PostScript driver and \r\n Windows. ATM does not have to be active when printing \r\n to PostScript devices.\r\n\r\n Although a particular application will allow you to \r\n bold or italicize a certain font, your PostScript \r\n printer will not be able to render the bold or italic \r\n font unless an outline for the bold or italic font is \r\n available. On non-PostScript printers, however, ATM \r\n will synthesize a bold, italic or bold italic version \r\n of a font based on the roman outline if the outline of \r\n the desired font style is not present.\r\n\r\n When the ATM 2.5 Installer creates the [Fonts] section \r\n of the ATM.INI, it adds all the PostScript fonts found \r\n in the installation disk as well as any PostScript \r\n fonts listed as soft-font entries for PostScript \r\n printers in the WIN.INI file. If you are upgrading \r\n from a previous version of ATM, the Installer also \r\n adds all the fonts listed in the current ATM.INI file.\r\n\r\n\r\n[Setup]\r\nPFM_Dir Default PFM directory for the ATM Control Panel when \r\n adding PostScript fonts. \r\nPFB_Dir Default PFB directory for the ATM Control Panel when \r\n adding PostScript fonts.\r\n\r\n\r\n[Settings]\r\nFontCache=96 Specifies the size of the font cache in \r\n kilobytes. This option is configurable \r\n through the ATM Control Panel. The default \r\n is 96k. Adobe recommends that this value \r\n not be set to more than 64k for each \r\n megabyte of physical memory. \r\nATM=On Determines whether or not ATM is loaded \r\n at Windows startup time.\r\nBitmapFonts=On This switch is set with the Use Pre-Built or \r\n Resident Fonts check box in the ATM Control \r\n Panel. When this switch is on, ATM defers \r\n to screen fonts, resident printer fonts, and \r\n printer soft fonts rather than rasterizing \r\n the font itself if the bitmap of the font \r\n requested in available. If you change this \r\n switch, you do not have to restart Windows \r\n for the change to take effect. You might, \r\n however, have to restart applications for \r\n the setting to take effect. The default \r\n setting is On.\r\nSynonymPSBegin=9 This value specifies the point size at which \r\n ATM starts using bitmap deferral for font\r\n pairs listed in both the Aliases and \r\n Synonyms sections. The default is 9. Adobe \r\n recommends that you do not change this \r\n setting.\r\nQLCDir Indicates the path of the ATM QuickLoad \r\n file, ATMFONTS.QLC.\r\n \r\n ATMFONTS.QLC contains a list of installed \r\n fonts and font metrics, which reduces \r\n Windows startup time. You can force ATM to \r\n rebuild this file by deleting the file with \r\n the MS-DOS DEL command and restarting \r\n Windows.\r\nVersion=2.5 This value enables the ATM Installer to\r\n determine the version of ATM when ATM is not \r\n active; otherwise, the Installer determines\r\n the version of ATM from the ATM DLL.\r\nDownloadFonts=On This switch instructs ATM to print text as \r\n soft fonts for Windows 3.1 printer drivers\r\n that support this feature.\r\n\r\n\r\n[Mono]\r\nCourier=Yes This section contains a list of monospaced\r\nLetterGothic=Yes fonts.\r\nPrestigeElite=Yes\r\nOrator=Yes\r\n\r\n\r\n[Aliases] This section tells ATM to substitute the font on the \r\n right of the equal sign for the font on the left of\r\n the equal sign when an application requests the font\r\n on the left of the equal sign. The ATM Installer\r\n defines aliases for the fonts Helv, Tms Rmn, \r\n Courier, Roman, and Modern.\r\n\r\n When the Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts option is\r\n turned on, ATM uses the resident bitmapped fonts for\r\n point sizes for which bitmaps exist. When The Use\r\n Pre-built or Resident option is turned off, ATM uses\r\n the PostScript outline font to rasterize all \r\n sizes of the aliased bitmapped font.\r\n\r\nHelv=Helvetica The fonts left of the equals sign are\r\nTms Rmn=Times Windows bitmapped fonts. By using\r\nCourier=Courier PostScript outline fonts, ATM can\r\n rasterize a smooth font when these\r\n fonts are requested at sizes not\r\n available in bitmapped form.\r\n\r\n\r\nRoman=Times These settings enable ATM to use\r\nModern=Helvetica PostScript outlines instead of the\r\n standard Windows vector fonts.\r\n\r\n\r\nCourier=Courier This setting is needed if an \r\n application requests the smallest\r\n available fixed-pitch font. If this\r\n line is not present, ATM provides \r\n someapplications with a 1-point \r\n Courier font.\r\n\r\n\r\nHelv=Arial MT If you have received ATM bundled with\r\nHelvetica=Arial MT another application, you might have \r\nTms Rmn=TimesNewRomanPS the fonts Arial MT and \r\n TimesNewRomanPS Times=TimesNewRomanPS \r\n instead the standard fonts Helvetica \r\n and Times. You should have these \r\n lines present in both the Aliases and \r\n Synonyms sections. These settings \r\n tell ATM to use internal printer \r\n fonts when printing Arial MT and \r\n TimesNewRomanPS to a PostScript \r\n printer. This reduces the time \r\n required to print documents and \r\n improves the quality of bold and \r\n italic text styles.\r\n\r\n If you have all four faces \r\n (Helvetica, Times, Arial MT and \r\n TimesNewRomanPS), you should use the \r\n font pairs Helv=Helvetica and Tms \r\n Rmn=Times in these sections.\r\n\r\n\r\n[Synonyms]\r\n\r\n\r\nHelv=Helvetica Unlike the font pairs in the Aliases\r\nTms Rmn=Times section, the font pairs in the \r\nCourier=Courier Synonyms are interchangeable. This \r\n means thatwhen the font Helv is \r\n requested at apoint size not \r\n available in bitmapped form, the font \r\n Helvetica will be used.\r\n \r\n In Windows 3.0 & 3.0a, when the font\r\n Helvetica is requested and a \r\n bitmapped Helv font of the exact size \r\n is available, ATM will use the Helv \r\n bitmap to display the font on the \r\n screen. \r\n\r\n In Windows 3.1, the screen fonts Helv\r\n and Tms Rmn have been replaced by MS\r\n Sans Serif and MS Serif, so screen\r\n font deferral does not apply.\r\n\r\n\r\n[Colors]\t This section may be added to the\r\n ATM.INI to override internal ATM \r\n defaults. The switch is global for\r\n all applications. While enabling \r\n this switch might be useful for a \r\n special purpose in a particular \r\n application, it can also produce \r\n unexpected results in other \r\n applications.\r\n\r\nPrintColorGraphics=Off This switch instructs ATM to print \r\n colored text as soft fonts under\r\n Windows 3.1 rather than as dithered \r\n graphics. The printer driver must\r\n support soft font creation for this\r\n switch to work. For most printer\r\n drivers, the resulting soft fonts \r\n print as black or white fonts." }
