You simply boot your computer and run\r\nthe TRAX installer program, SETUP. In addition to the TRAX \r\napplication, you can also install some sample music files.\r\n\r\nThe end of this document contains additional information about \r\nWindows, MIDI Drivers, Port and IRQ settings and troubleshooting \r\ntips.\r\n\r\nMIDI setup\r\n\r\nAlthough you can use TRAX without a MIDI instrument, in order to use\r\nTRAX with a MIDI instrument, you must configure the software so that\r\nit can communicate properly with your hardware. See the instructions\r\nbelow.\r\n\r\n\r\nINSTALLATION\r\n\r\nBy running the Setup program from within Windows, you can quickly \r\nand easily install TRAX and all related files.\r\n\r\nNote: For the following installation Microsoft Windows must \r\nalready be installed on your hard disk.\r\n\r\nTo install TRAX from Windows with the Multimedia Extensions \r\nor Windows 3.1 or later:\r\n\r\n1. Run Windows.\r\n2. Insert the TRAX Program Disk into your computer's disk \r\ndrive (A: or B:).\r\n3. Choose \"Run\" from the File menu of the Windows Program \r\nManager. The Run dialog appears.\r\n4. In the \"Command Line\" text box, enter A:SETUP (or B:SETUP if \r\nthe Program Disk is in drive B:).\r\n5. Click OK or press Enter to run the TRAX Setup program.\r\nThe Setup dialog appears.\r\n\r\nThe default drive and directory to which TRAX will be copied \r\nare displayed in a text box. If you want to install TRAX in a \r\ndifferent directory or drive, simply make the appropriate changes to \r\nthe text box.\r\n\r\nSeveral installation options are listed in the box at the bottom of the \r\ndialog. These include installation of the TRAX program files and \r\nMIDI drivers The options are pre-selected (reverse highlighted) for \r\ninstallation (the Passport MIDI drivers will automatically be de-selected on \r\nMultimedia PCs or PCs running Windows 3.1 or later). \r\nDe-select any options that you do not want.\r\n\r\n6. Click OK and follow the on-screen prompts.\r\nA dialog appears that asks if you would like the Setup program to \r\ncreate a TRAX Program Group in the Windows Program \r\nManager.\r\n7. Click Yes or press Enter to create a TRAX Program Group.\r\n\r\n\r\nMIDI setup\r\n\r\nAlthough you can use TRAX without a MIDI instrument , in order\r\nto use TRAX with a MIDI instrument, you must configure the software\r\nso that it can communicate properly with your hardware.\r\n\r\n1. Open the TRAX Program Group in the Windows Program Manager\r\n (if it is not already open), and double-click the TRAX icon\r\n to run the program.\r\n2. Pull down the Goodies menu and choose the MIDI Setup item.\r\n The MIDI Setup dialog appears.\r\n\r\nPorts\r\n\r\nTRAX can communicate with the MIDI world over any one of your\r\ncomputer's output ports. This lets TRAX address sixteen MIDI\r\nchannels over any port. \r\n\r\nThere are three drop down list boxes that enable you to make port \r\nassignments. The first box lets you designate the output port of\r\nyour interface. This list box allows you to select which of your\r\ncomputer's MIDI hardware ports will be used for MIDI playback.\r\nTRAX's output can also be routed to the onboard synthesizers on\r\nsound cards like Anchor Electronics' Media Concept board, Creative\r\nLabs' Sound Blaster and Media Vision's Pro AudioSpectrum.\r\n\r\nNext to the output port list box is a check box labeled \"Send\r\nSync\". Click this box to transmit MIDI sync messages on that port.\r\nTRAX sends MIDI song position pointer, MIDI start, stop and\r\ncontinue and MIDI clocks.\r\n\r\nThe next list box, labeled \"Record port\" tells TRAX which port is \r\nconnected to the MIDI controller with which you'll enter notes onto \r\nyour score.\r\n\r\nTRAX can play or record based on your computer's own internal \r\nclock or on a MIDI song position pointer and MIDI clocks received \r\nfrom an outside source. If you'll be synchronizing your computer to \r\nan external signal, you may want to keep the incoming sync signal \r\nseparate from MIDI data you're recording. The \"Receive sync port\" \r\nitem lets you do this.\r\n\r\nSync Source\r\n\r\nThe \"Sync Source\" radio buttons determine whether you'll use your \r\ncomputer's clock or an external MIDI device as TRAX's master \r\nclock.\r\n\r\nIf you won't be using an external MIDI sync source to control the \r\nplayback of TRAX: Check Internal.\r\n\r\nYour PC's internal clock will control TRAX's playback speed.\r\n\r\nIf you do want to \"slave\" TRAX's playback functions to an \r\nexternal source: Check External.\r\n\r\n********************************************************\r\nTRAX and Windows\r\n\r\nThis version of TRAX is designed to run with the Multimedia\r\nExtensions to Windows 3.0 or with Windows 3.1. \r\n\r\nThe Setup program creates a Program Manager group called \"TRAX\"\r\nand several Program Manager items (icons) for the TRAX executable\r\nprogram and sample files.\r\n\r\nSeveral sample music files are included with TRAX. Some of the\r\nfiles are authored and voiced according to authoring guidelines for\r\nMultimedia PCs, where channels 1 through 10 are for Hi-End General\r\nMIDI style sound modules, while channels 13 through 16 are for \r\nbase-level Adlib, SoundBlaster or MediaVision style FM synth cards. \r\nThe best way to get these files to sound good on your system is to \r\nplay them back through a correctly configured MIDI Mapper. You can \r\ndo this by selecting the MIDI Mapper as the output port in TRAX's \r\nMIDI Setup dialog. Alternativly, you can playback the base-level\r\nchannels directly to an Adlib sytle FM synth, by selecting the\r\ncorresponding output port in the MIDI Setup dialog and by soloing\r\nthe tracks that are assigned to channels 13 through 16. Of course,\r\nif you have a General MIDI synth, such as the Roland SC-55 Sound\r\nCanvas connected to a MIDI out port, then you could solo all tracks\r\nthat are assigned to channels 1 through 10 and play them back\r\ndirectly to the General MIDI synth.\r\n\r\nThe other sample music files that are included are generic enough\r\nto sound good on just about any synth or sound module. These files\r\nare not intended for multimedia purposes and will probably not \r\nsound right when played back through the MIDI Mapper.\r\n\r\n************************************\r\nTRAX - \r\nSound Card and MIDI Interface Address and Interrupt settings\r\n\r\nYou can use the \"Drivers\" Applet in the Windows Control Panel\r\nto adjust the settings that are used for your MIDI hardware.\r\nSelect the driver that you want to configure and then click on\r\nthe \"Setup\" button to change the port address and interrupt level.\r\nIf the driver that you need does not appear to be installed then\r\nclick on the \"Add\" button to install it.\r\n\r\nYou can also edit the SYSTEM.INI file directly using the Windows\r\nSYSEDIT application. Look for the section in the SYSTEM.INI that\r\ncontains the settings for your driver. If the driver is currently\r\nusing the default settings then you may have to add the section as\r\nshown in the examples below:\r\n\r\n; default settings for an MPU-401\r\n[mpu401.drv]\r\nport=330\r\nint=2\r\n\r\n; for Soundblaster or Media Concept MIDI\r\n[sndblst.drv]\r\nport=220\r\nint=7\r\n\r\nThe first entry, for instance, will tell the Windows MIDI\r\ndriver to look for your MPU-401 on interrupt 2 at port\r\naddress 330. Check your card and its documentation for help\r\non finding out what these values are. The above values are\r\nthe defaults. You need only add an entry to your SYSTEM.INI\r\nfile if your values are different than these.\r\n\r\nWindows provides a program which makes editing your\r\nSYSTEM.INI file, and other system files, easy to do. It is\r\ncalled SYSEDIT.EXE and can be found in your Windows system\r\ndirectory. Add it to your Main group if you haven't done so\r\nalready. It is great to have around. Take care when you edit\r\nthese files, however. They must be just right for your\r\nsystem to work. Keep backups around just in case.\r\n\r\n\r\n***********************************\r\nTROUBLE SHOOTING\r\n\r\n-> If you get the message 'Out of environment space' when\r\n booting after installing TRAX, increase the\r\n environment size in your CONFIG.SYS file. The statement:\r\n\r\n shell=command.com /e:512 /p\r\n\r\n will most likely provide you with ample space. If not,\r\n increase the number after '/e:'.\r\n\r\n-> If you get no MIDI I/O whatsoever, make sure that you have\r\n selected the correct MIDI ports in the MIDI Setup dialog. If\r\n you still get no MIDI I/O then make sure that the SYSTEM.INI\r\n settings are correct for your hardware. Check your card and\r\n its documentation to make sure of what the values are."
