1.1a\r\n=======================================\r\n\r\nAldus PhotoStyler 1.1a incorporates a number of feature enhancements,\r\na JPEG image compression module, a raw data format module,\r\nupdated Epson and Nikon scanner drivers, and an updated Kodak export \r\nmodule.\r\n\r\n- Additional TARGA data type\r\n PhotoStyler can now open and save greyscale images in the TARGA format.\r\n\r\n- Printer marks\r\n The new \"Include printer marks\" checkbox in the \"Page Setup\" dialogue box\r\n causes PhotoStyler to print crop marks, registration marks, a \r\n calibration bar, and (for colour images) a colour bar along with\r\n the image. This new checkbox takes the place of the old \"Include \r\n crop marks\" and \"Include calibration bar\" checkboxes.\r\n\r\n- Improved performance\r\n Performance has been improved in several areas, most notably \r\n cutting, copying, and pasting via the Clipboards, operation of \r\n painting tools, and display of images onscreen. In addition, \r\n the speed of opening and saving images using LZW compression \r\n has been greatly improved.\r\n\r\n- Opening files\r\n Several enhancements make it easier and faster to open files in \r\n PhotoStyler 1.1a:\r\n\t\r\n\t- PhotoStyler now lists the most recently opened filenames \r\n\t at the bottom of the File menu for faster access. To open \r\n\t a file directly from the File menu, click its filename. \r\n \t Note that you can open only a single file at a time by \r\n\t this method.\r\n\r\n\t- You can now open multiple files in one operation. In the \r\n \"Open Image File\" dialogue box, select a group of filenames\r\n \t by clicking the top name, then holding down the Shift key \r\n\t and clicking the bottom name. Or select discontiguous \r\n\t filenames by holding down the Ctrl key as you click. \r\n\t Alternatively, you can type the names of the files you \r\n\t want to open, separating each name by a space. Click \"OK\" \r\n\t to open all selected files. To cancel the opening of\r\n\t all remaining selected files, hold down Shift and press \r\n\t the Esc key.\r\n\r\n\t- The new \"All formats\" file extension option in the \"Open \r\n Image File\" dialogue box lets you choose from a list of all\r\n\t PhotoStyler-compatible files, regardless of file type.\r\n\r\n- Closing files\r\n New shortcuts enable you in a single operation to close all open \r\n images without saving or to exit from PhotoStyler without saving \r\n open images.\r\n\r\n\t- To close all open images without saving, hold down the \r\n\t Shift key and choose \"Close\" from the File menu.\r\n\r\n\t- To exit from PhotoStyler without saving multiple open \r\n\t images, hold down the Shift key and choose \"Exit\" from \r\n\t the File menu. Alternatively, you can hold down the Shift \r\n\t key and double-click the control menu box at the upper \r\n\t left corner of the PhotoStyler application window.\r\n\r\n- Context-sensitive online help available for dialogue boxes\r\n You can now display context-sensitive online help for a dialogue box\r\n by pressing the F1 key when the dialogue box is open.\r\n\r\n- Updated scanner driver\r\n The updated Epson scanner driver now supports use of the Epson\r\n scanners with IBM PS/2 computers.\r\n\r\n- Updated Kodak export module\r\n The Kodak export module has been updated to support the Kodak \r\n XLT7720 printer. \r\n\t\r\n- JPEG image compression\r\n JPEG is a standard method of compressing continuous-tone images \r\n while saving them, resulting in a smaller file size. Photo-\r\n Styler 1.1a enables you to save a Greyscale or RGB True Colour\r\n image in a compressed form on disk, then decompress the image \r\n when you want to work on it. For detailed online information \r\n about the JPEG import/export module, highlight the JPEG \r\n compression command on either the \"Import\" or \"Export\" \r\n submenu on the File menu, then press the F1 key.\r\n\r\n- Raw format images\r\n Some types of medical imaging and other scientific equipment \r\n (such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging machines, scanning laser \r\n microscopes, x-ray machines, and LANDSAT satellites) can create \r\n images in the form of raw binary data. PhotoStyler 1.1a provides \r\n an import/export module that enables you to open non-interlaced \r\n raw image files in PhotoStyler if you know some information about \r\n the file, such as the image height and width in pixels, whether \r\n the image file has a header, etc. You can also export images \r\n from PhotoStyler 1.1a in the form of a raw data file for use in \r\n other applications that do not support standard file formats. The \r\n \"Raw Format Image...\" commands appear on the \"Import\" and \"Export\"\r\n submenus on the File menu only if you have installed the Raw Image \r\n Data Format import/export module (RAWIMAGE.EXE). For detailed \r\n online information about the raw data format, press the F1 key \r\n while the \"Raw Format Image...\" command is highlighted.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n=======================================\r\nInstalling compressed files\r\n=======================================\r\n\r\nYour Aldus PhotoStyler disk set contains files that have been \r\ncompressed to save disk space. These files contain the tilde (~) \r\ncharacter as part of their filename extension. These files are \r\nautomatically decompressed by the PhotoStyler installation program, \r\nat which point they are automatically renamed to their standard \r\nfilename.\r\n\r\n\r\n=======================================\r\nInstalling the Sharp or Nikon scanner driver\r\n=======================================\r\n\r\nIf you choose to install either the Sharp or the Nikon scanner \r\ndriver BEFORE you have installed the required General Purpose \r\nInterface Bus (GPIB) board and its associated software, you will \r\nreceive an error message stating \"Cannot find GPIB.DLL\" each time \r\nyou start PhotoStyler. Click the \"OK\" button to continue. The \r\nabsence of the GPIB file will not prevent you from using PhotoStyler,\r\nhowever, you will not be able to use the scanner until you have \r\ninstalled the scanner, the GPIB board, and the GPIB software. Once \r\nthese are successfully installed, the error message will no longer \r\nappear.\r\n\r\nNote: The Nikon scanner driver shipped with PhotoStyler 1.1a\r\nsupports the Nikon LS3500 scanner. If you need the scanner driver\r\nfor the Nikon LS3510 scanner, contact the dealer where you\r\nbought your Nikon product. If they cannot help you, contact Nikon's\r\ntechnical support line at Nikon headquarters in New York, at\r\n1-516-547-4358.\r\n\r\n\r\n=============================\r\nInstalling with the Mona Lisa display card\r\n=============================\r\n\r\nTo install Aldus PhotoStyler on a system that uses a Mona Lisa\r\ndisplay card, you must have a Mona Lisa driver version 1.05\r\n(or higher). If you don't have the appropriate driver, change\r\nthe display setting in Windows Setup to VGA before you run \r\n\"pssetup.exe.\" When the installation is complete, switch the\r\ndisplay setting back to the Mona Lisa driver.\r\n\r\n\r\n=====================================================\r\nNetwork operation\r\n=====================================================\r\n\r\nIf you have trouble using PhotoStyler in a network environment,\r\n(for example, if the double dot \"..\" does not appear at the top of\r\nthe directory list box in the \"Open\" dialogue box), please refer to\r\nthe file \"NETWORKS.TXT\" in your Windows 3.0 directory.\r\n\r\n\r\n=======================================\r\nUpdating PhotoStyler\r\n=======================================\r\n\r\nIf you want to update part, but not all, of PhotoStyler (for \r\nexample, to change to a different scanner driver), run PSSETUP.EXE \r\nand select the \"Update\" option. When you have completed updating the \r\nselected file(s), click \"Exit\" to return to the program manager.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n============================\r\nFile Formats -- Resolution\r\n============================\r\n\r\nFiles saved from some applications that use the old .PCX format \r\n(that follow specifications dated before Dec 12, 1990) are saved \r\nwith a different type of \"resolution\" information. In addition, \r\nthe GIF and TGA file formats do not retain resolution information. \r\nIf you have files that were saved in one of these formats, and the \r\nresolution of the file is important to you, open the file in Aldus \r\nPhotoStyler, resample to the resolution you want, then save in \r\nanother file format.\r\n\r\n\r\n=======================================\r\nFile Formats -- EPS files for Macintosh\r\n=======================================\r\n\r\nIf you choose to save your file in the Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) \r\nformat, PhotoStyler gives you the choice of ASCII or Binary. If you \r\nintend to use your EPS file in a Macintosh application, we recommend \r\nthat you choose the \"ASCII\" option, and save the file without a \r\npreview image.\r\n\r\n\r\n======================\r\nMask limitation\r\n======================\r\n\r\n[For additional information, refer to pages 148 through 152 in the \r\nAldus PhotoStyler User Manual.]\r\nTo be used as a mask, an image must contain at least one pixel with \r\na greyscale value of 128 or greater. If the image that you attempt\r\nto use as a mask does NOT contain any greysale values in the\r\npermissible range, PhotoStyler will display an error message \r\ninforming you that the operation cannot be done.\r\n\r\n\r\n=========================\r\nPlug-in filters\r\n=========================\r\n\r\nA maximum of 60 plug-in filters can be used with PhotoStyler.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n=====================================================\r\nSetting page size for printing from a PostScript dump\r\n=====================================================\r\n\r\nIf you experience difficulty in printing a PostScript dump file \r\nto the proper page size (for example, in printing the PostScript \r\nfile to an imagesetter), follow these steps AFTER you have created \r\nyour file:\r\n\r\n1. Select \"Printer Setup...\" from the File menu.\r\n2. In the \"Printer Setup\" dialogue box, click the \"Setup...\" button.\r\n3. In the printer-specific dialogue box, choose options for\r\n\"Printer,\" \"Paper Size,\" etc.\r\n4. Click the \"Options...\" button.\r\n5. In the \"Options\" dialogue box, click the \"Header...\" button.\r\n6. In the \"Header\" dialogue box, select \"Printer.\"\r\n7. Click \"OK\" to close each dialogue box.\r\n8. If you need crop marks or calibration bars, choose \"Page \r\nSetup...\" from the File menu, then make the appropriate selections.\r\n9. Select \"Print...\" from the file menu and print the file.\r\n\r\n\r\n=====================================================\r\nSeparating PhotoStyler images through Aldus PrePrint\r\n=====================================================\r\n\r\nIf you have trouble separating an Aldus PageMaker publication\r\nthat contains PhotoStyler TIFF images through Aldus PrePrint \r\n1.5, open the TIFF image(s) in PrePrint before you separate \r\nthe publication. Leave the image window(s) open while you \r\nprint separations of the publication.\r\n\r\n\r\n=====================================================\r\nRunning STACKER with PhotoStyler\r\n=====================================================\r\n\r\nThe following are steps you can take to avoid possible\r\nproblems with PhotoStyler if you are using the disk-\r\ncompression utility STACKER: \r\n\r\n1. Swap files\r\n When setting up STACKER, you can leave disk space\r\n uncompressed for storing of system files. If you will\r\n be using a swap file, it must be set up on the \r\n uncompressed drive. To work with an image, PhotoStyler\r\n requires a swap file space at least double the size of\r\n the image itself. If you get \"Disk full\" error messages\r\n even when your compressed drive indicates that there \r\n is sufficient room for the active file, check that your\r\n permanent swap file (or the uncompressed drive containing\r\n your temporary swap file) is large enough to hold twice\r\n the image size.\r\n\r\n2. CONFIG.SYS\r\n During STACKER installation, a SSWAP line may have been \r\n added to your CONFIG.SYS file to substitute the drive \r\n letter of your physical hard drive for the letter of\r\n STACKER's logical drive. If this is the case, any lines\r\n added for PhotoStyler-related devices must come after\r\n the SSWAP line. If you install certain PhotoStyler drivers \r\n that require additions to your CONFIG.SYS file, you will\r\n be alerted to that fact by the PSSETUP installation program,\r\n which will give you the option of updating CONFIG.SYS \r\n automatically or updating the file yourself after the \r\n installation is complete. Whether you allow PSSETUP to \r\n automatically update your CONFIG.SYS file, or you make\r\n the modification yourself, you should check to make sure\r\n that the added device line(s) are positioned after the\r\n STACKER-related SSWAP line.\r\n\r\n\r\n=====================================================\r\nPrinting error under Windows 3.1\r\n=====================================================\r\n\r\nMicrosoft has fixed a problem existing in the universal\r\nprinter driver shipped with Windows 3.1. This problem \r\ncaused a \"General Application Error\" (GAE) when printing \r\nfrom PhotoStyler to some printers that use the universal \r\nprinter driver (such as the Hewlett-Packard PaintJet). \r\nThe error will occur with this printer driver if the \r\n\"Halftone by Printer\" option is selected in PhotoStyler's \r\n\"Page Setup\" dialogue box.
