INSTALLING PAGEAHEAD\r\n=====================================\r\nBe sure to add the directory containing \r\nPageAhead to the PATH statement in your \r\nAUTOEXEC.BAT file. The Aldus Setup program \r\nlets you do this automatically when you \r\ninstall PageAhead. If you decline to let \r\nAldus Setup update your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, \r\nyou'll need to update the file yourself \r\nbefore running PageAhead, so the program \r\ncan find the .DLL and other files it \r\nneeds. (Restart your computer after \r\nmodifying AUTOEXEC.BAT.)\r\n\r\nIf you are installing PageAhead on a\r\ncomputer which has a non-English version of\r\nPageMaker, you must perform the following\r\nsteps to make PageAhead work with PageMaker:\r\n1. Install PageAhead as instructed on the\r\n installation card.\r\n2. Locate the file PAIMP.FLT in the directory\r\n \\ALDUS\\UKENGLSH\\FILTERS. Move this file to\r\n the language directory which represents \r\n the version of PageMaker you have\r\n installed. For example, if you have\r\n Swedish PageMaker, move this file into\r\n \\ALDUS\\SVENSKA\\FILTERS.\r\n3. Locate the file ALDUS.INI in your\r\n PageMaker language directory (e.g.,\r\n \\ALDUS\\SVENSKA\\ALDUS.INI). Open this file\r\n in Windows Notepad. \r\n4. Add the following line to the \r\n [AldusImports] section of the ALDUS.INI \r\n file:\r\n PageAhead Import=PAIMP4.FLT,PA1\r\n5. Save ALDUS.INI. Exit Windows, and restart\r\n your computer to get all the changes.\r\n \r\n=====================================\r\n2. SAMPLE FILES INCLUDED WITH PAGEAHEAD\r\n=====================================\r\nSeveral sample files are included with \r\nPageAhead. They are:\r\n\r\nFILES\t\t\tCONTENTS\r\n----------\t\t----------------\r\nCAT_PS.PT4\t\tSetup and example files\r\nCAT_PS.PM4\t\tused in the PageAhead\r\nCAT_LJ2.PT4\t\ttutorial, which is part\r\nCAT_LJ2.PM4\t\tof PageAhead online\r\nCAT_LJ3.PT4\t\tHelp.\r\nCAT_LJ3.PM4\t\t\r\n\r\nTUTORIAL.PA1\t\tPageAhead setup\r\n\t\t\tfile used in \r\n\t\t\tthe tutorial.\r\n\r\nCOURSES.DBF\t\tSample database files\r\nPROFS.DBF\t\tused in the tutorial and \r\n\t\t\tin examples in the \r\n\t\t\tPageAhead User Manual.\r\n\r\nThese files are installed in the \r\n\\PM4\\PA\\TUTORIAL directory (unless you \r\ninstall PageAhead in another directory).\r\n\r\n=====================================\r\n3. CORRECTIONS TO THE PAGEAHEAD USER \r\nMANUAL\r\n=====================================\r\nThe PageAhead User Manual does not include \r\ninformation about options available when \r\nyou query text-format (ASCII) database \r\ntables. For information about these \r\noptions, refer to the online Help topic \r\n\"Creating a Query table.\" \r\n\r\nPage 29: The last sentence of the third\r\nparagraph should read:\r\nFor more information about keywords, see\r\nChapters 4 and 5 of this manual.\r\n\r\nPage 32: Arguments to string functions must\r\nbe enclosed in parenthesis, not brackets. \r\nThus, the first example on the page should\r\nread:\r\n RTRIM(FIRSTNAME)\r\nFor more information, see \"Text functions\" \r\ntopic in online Help.\r\n\r\nPage 39: The table does not contain a \r\ndescription of the \"Convert output to \r\nANSI\" option in the \"Query Preferences\" \r\ndialog box. This option causes PageAhead \r\nto use the international ANSI character \r\nset instead of ASCII. This option is \r\nuseful for databases containing non-\r\nEnglish-language characters, but is not \r\nnormally needed for English-language \r\ndatabases.\r\n\r\nPage 91: The fourth paragraph should read: \r\nTo change several attributes at a time, \r\nchoose the \"Character...\" command from the \r\nFormat menu.\r\n \r\n=====================================\r\n4. GRAPHICS\r\n=====================================\r\nCurrently, PageMaker has difficulty \r\nimporting BMP-format graphic files when: \r\n1. A setup file contains more than one \r\ntype of graphic file format, and \r\n2. BMP files are not the last files to be \r\nimported. \r\nIn other words, when importing a setup \r\nfile that contains references to BMP and \r\nother graphic file types, all BMP graphics \r\nmust occur after all other graphic \r\nfilenames in the setup file, or PageMaker \r\nmay not place the setup file. You can \r\navoid this problem by converting BMP files \r\nto other formats, or by arranging your \r\nsetup file so that BMP files occur after \r\nall other graphics files.\r\n \r\n=====================================\r\n5. MOVING COLUMNS\r\n=====================================\r\nCurrently, when you move a column using \r\nthe mouse, tables do not scroll \r\nhorizontally. If you encounter this \r\nproblem, you may find cutting the column \r\nand pasting it into its new location more \r\nconvenient than dragging it.\r\n \r\n=====================================\r\n6. OUT-OF-MEMORY PROBLEMS\r\n=====================================\r\nOccasionally, Windows may run out of \r\nmemory while PageAhead is placing a setup \r\nfile into PageMaker, which is a memory-\r\nintensive operation. In some cases, \r\nPageAhead may suspend data retrieval and \r\ndisplay a warning message. Most often, \r\nthis problem occurs when other Windows \r\napplications are running. To solve the \r\nproblem, close other applications to free \r\nmemory, and then try to place the setup \r\nfile again.\r\n \r\n=====================================\r\n7. MODIFYING SEPARATOR AND CHARACTER \r\nWEIGHT TABLES\r\n(DEFAULT.ST1 and DEFAULT.WT1)\r\n=====================================\r\nIf you modify the default Separator and \r\nCharacter Weight tables that come with \r\nPageAhead, we recommend that you keep \r\nbackup copies of the original files in a \r\nsafe place on your hard disk. Otherwise, \r\nif you need to use the original versions \r\nof these files you'll need to install them \r\nagain from the original PageAhead \r\ninstallation disks using the Aldus Setup \r\nprogram. (Start ALDSETUP.EXE on the \r\nPageAhead installation disk, choose \r\n\"Single file copy\" from the File menu in \r\nthe Aldus Setup main window, and select \r\nthe file you want to install.) Because the \r\nfiles are compressed, you must use the \r\nAldus Setup program to install them on \r\nyour hard disk.\r\n \r\n=====================================\r\n8. WORKING WITH LARGE DATABASES\r\n=====================================\r\nWhen you query a large database, some \r\noperations, such as moving columns \r\ncontaining many formatting attributes, can \r\nslow PageAhead noticeably. You can work \r\nmore quickly if you limit the size of your \r\ndatabase queries until you are ready to \r\nproduce the final version of your \r\ndatabase. You can limit the size of the \r\nquery using the \"Restrict number of rows \r\nto\" option in the \"Query Preferences\" \r\ndialog box (choose \"Preferences...\" from \r\nthe Query menu). When you are ready to \r\nplace the setup file, remove the \r\nrestriction, close the setup file, and \r\nplace the file in PageMaker.\r\n \r\nPageAhead can accommodate a maximum of 128 \r\ncolumns (fields) in .DBF (dBASE) files, \r\nand up to 255 columns in text (ASCII) \r\nfiles. If you encounter a table larger \r\nthan these limits, split the table in your \r\nDBMS and select columns from the resulting \r\ntables using the PageAhead join feature. \r\nFor more information, refer to \"Joining \r\nrelated tables to combine information,\" in \r\nChapter 2 of the PageAhead User Manual.\r\n \r\n=====================================\r\n9. DELIMITERS IN TEXT (ASCII) FILES\r\n=====================================\r\nPageAhead accepts the following delimiters \r\nwhen querying character-separated text \r\n(ASCII) files:\r\n\r\n\t, \tcomma \r\n\t\" \tquotation mark\r\n\t` \taccent grave\r\n\t! \texclamation mark \r\n\t$ \tdollar sign \r\n\t^ \tcarat\r\n\t& \tampersand \r\n\t- \thyphen \r\n\t_ \tunderline \r\n\r\n\r\n=====================================\r\n10. LEADER TABS IN PAGEMAKER\r\n=====================================\r\nUnder certain circumstances, leader tabs \r\nin PageMaker 4.0 can cause an \r\nUnrecoverable Application Error (UAE), \r\npotentially resulting in the loss of work. \r\nBecause your work with PageAhead may \r\ninvolve leader tabs, you should be aware \r\nof this problem and take steps to avoid it \r\nwhen using leader tabs.\r\n\r\nThe PageMaker 4.0 leader tab UAE occurs \r\nwhen strings of text delimited by leader \r\ntabs are so close together that the leader \r\ncharacter does not display. You can avoid \r\nthis problem by leaving adequate space \r\nbetween leader tabs when you create \r\nPageMaker styles. After importing your \r\nPageAhead setup file, you can adjust tab \r\npositions between the tabbed items. \r\nAlternatively, set tabs, but not leaders, \r\nuntil after you place and arrange the data \r\nin PageMaker. Then switch to leader tabs \r\nwhen you have assured that text in your \r\ncolumns does not obscure leaders.\r\n\r\nYou may wish to place a small portion of \r\nyour database into PageMaker to test \r\nwhether your columns allow sufficient \r\nspace to avoid this problem. (You can \r\nlimit the number of rows placed into your \r\nPageMaker publication by pressing Shift \r\nbefore you click \"OK\" in the PageMaker \r\n\"Place file\" dialog box. The \"PageAhead \r\nFilter Preferences\" dialog box opens, in \r\nwhich you can specify the number of rows \r\nto import.)\r\n\r\n=====================================\r\n11. TIFF (TAG IMAGE FORMAT FILE) IMAGES\r\n=====================================\r\nIf you resize a TIFF file in PageAhead \r\n(using the \"Graphic\" command on the Format \r\nmenu), PageMaker cannot establish a link to \r\nthe original TIFF file when you place the \r\nsetup file in PageMaker. To solve this problem,\r\nrelink to the original TIFF file from within\r\nPageMaker (using the \"Links...\" command \r\non the File menu). Or, size the TIFF file in \r\nthe original application before placing it \r\nin either PageAhead or PageMaker.\r\n\r\nAlso, Macintosh-format TIFF files from certain \r\nprograms will not import at all into PageMaker\r\nif they have been resized in PageAhead. If the\r\nimport fails, resize the image to final size\r\nin the original application, or re-create your \r\nfile using Aldus SuperPaint or Aldus PhotoStyler.\r\n\r\n=====================================\r\n12. COLUMN NAME \"FROM\" NOT ALLOWED\r\n=====================================\r\nPageAhead cannot query correctly if a \r\ndatabase contains a column named \"FROM.\" \r\nRename such a column in your DBMS before \r\nquerying the database.\r\n\r\n=====================================\r\n13. PLACING SETUP FILE WHILE IT IS OPEN\r\n=====================================\r\nPageMaker will not force a query of the \r\ndatabase when you place a setup file if \r\nthe Answer table for that setup file is \r\nopen. Instead, PageMaker will import only \r\nthe data currently in the Answer table. To \r\nsolve this problem, close a setup file \r\nbefore placing it in PageMaker.\r\n \r\n=====================================\r\n14. SIDE-BY-SIDE PARAGRAPHS MISALIGNING \r\nIN PAGEMAKER\r\n=====================================\r\nSide-by-side paragraphs to which you have \r\napplied heading control (using the \r\n\"Heading Control\" command on the Work \r\nmenu) can misalign when you import them \r\ninto PageMaker 4.0. To solve this problem \r\nand maintain proper tab alignment:\r\n\r\n1. Insert a literal column to the right of \r\nthe header control column. This literal \r\ncolumn should have the same paragraph \r\nformatting as the header control column. \r\n(You insert a literal column using the \r\n\"Add Literal Column...\" command on the \r\nWork menu.)\r\n\r\n2. Select the Literal column, and then \r\nchoose \"Suppress Column\" from the Work \r\nmenu. Select \"Conditional\" for the \r\n\"Suppress\" option in the \"Suppress Column\" \r\ndialog box, and then add the header column \r\nto the \"Any of these has data\" list box, \r\nso that when the information in the header \r\ncolumn is suppressed, the literal column \r\nis not. Select the \"Data and layout\" \r\noption.\r\n\r\n3. Select the header column, and then \r\nchoose \"Suppress Column\" from the Work \r\nmenu. Select \"Conditional\" for the \r\n\"Suppress\" option in the \"Suppress Column\" \r\ndialog box, and add the header column to \r\nthe \"Any of these is empty\" list box, so \r\nthat it will be suppressed if there is no \r\ndata in the column (a null value). Select \r\nthe \"Data and layout\" option.\r\n\r\n4. Click \"OK.\"\r\n\r\n=====================================\r\n15. BLANK ROWS IN EXCEPTION AND \r\nREPLACEMENT TABLES\r\n=====================================\r\nBlank rows in the middle of Exception and \r\nReplacement tables can prevent PageAhead \r\nfrom recognising information that occurs \r\nbelow the blank row. You can remove blank \r\nrows using the \"Delete Rows\" command on \r\nthe Table Utility Edit menu.\r\n\r\n=====================================\r\n16. REPLACING UNMATCHED TEXT COLUMN CELLS \r\nWITH A NULL VALUE\r\n=====================================\r\nTo replace unmatched text column cells \r\nwith a null value:\r\n\r\n1. Specify a text pattern replacement in \r\nthe \"Replace Data\" dialog box (choose \r\n\"Replace...\" from the Work menu).\r\n\r\n2. Add a row to the bottom of the current \r\nreplacement table. Then enter a single * \r\n(asterisk) in the \"From\" column and \r\nnothing in the \"To\" column. (The \"If no \r\nmatch, replace with\" option in the \r\n\"Replace Data\" dialog box will not accept \r\na blank line as a null replacement string. \r\nInstead, it assumes that a blank means no \r\nstring.)"
