NOTES\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nWelcome to IntelliDraw. Get ready for a new adventure \r\nto new horizons. Your drawings are no longer limited to \r\nbeing static and lifeless, and a chore to change. \r\nIntelliDraw opens a whole new world of possibilities.\r\n\r\nHERE ARE SOME HELPFUL NOTES AND LATEST NEWS\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nWINDOW SIZING AND POSITIONING \r\n\r\nThe size of your working window is initially dependent \r\non the IntelliDraw Defaults document, which is the \r\nmaster for all your New documents. This document is \r\ninstalled in your IDRAW directory when you initially \r\ninstall IntelliDraw.\r\n\r\nThis installed default document has a 640 x 480 pixel \r\nformat. To adjust this document to any size monitor, \r\nthere is a simple, and permanent adjustment you can \r\nmake:\r\n\r\n- Choose New View from the View menu; then, when the \r\n new small document window opens, close the original \r\n window.\r\n- Adjust the position of the new view window by \r\n dragging the Name bar and resizing the window to \r\n whatever working size you want. \r\n\r\nAlso make any changes to page orientation, \r\nmagnification, text setting choices, printer choices, and \r\npage setup. \r\n\r\nFinally, choose Save as Default from the File menu. All \r\nyour future New documents will then use this window \r\nsize, page orientation, text settings, etc.\r\n\r\nYou can change the settings of the default document at \r\nany time, and use the Save As Default command to \r\nestablish the change.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nPOSITIONING PALETTES\r\n\r\nIntelliDraw has several palettes that you can move, \r\nreshape, collapse, and hide completely. Their initial \r\nposition is determined by the preferences document \r\ncalled IDRAW.PRF\r\n\r\nAfter you launch IntelliDraw, arrange these palettes as \r\nyou see fit. Every time you quit the program, \r\nIntelliDraw remembers which palettes were open and \r\nwhere you left them. These will reopen at those \r\npositions the next time you use the program.\r\n\r\nBecause IntelliDraw has both Short and Full menus, \r\nthere are separate settings for the Short and Full \r\nversions of the Tool and Action Button palettes. This \r\nmeans that the placement of the Full Menus tool palette \r\nwill not affect the location of the Short Menus tool \r\npalette. Each must be positioned in its own mode.\r\n\r\nIf you can't see a palette when the menu indicates it's \r\nopen, check the following:\r\n\r\n- Another palette may be on top of it\r\n- It may be beyond the visible area of the monitor, \r\n perhaps put there when you worked with a larger \r\n monitor. To bring it back, do the following:\r\n- Quit IntelliDraw\r\n- Delete the IntelliDraw preferences document \r\n IDRAW.PRF from the IDRAW directory.\r\n- Launch IntelliDraw, which will open with no palettes. \r\n\r\nUse the View menu to open all the palettes you need, \r\nand place them where you want them. Be sure you set \r\nyour palettes up in both Short and Full menus.\r\nFinally:\r\n\r\n- Quit IntelliDraw to establish the changes.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nPERFORMANCE NOTES\r\n\r\nIntelliDraw works best with real RAM. You can do a \r\ngreat deal of work, even with 4 MB machines. The more \r\nRAM you have, the better. \r\n\r\nIf you run multiple applications, even if some are \r\nminimized, they will compete for real RAM.\r\n\r\nWhen programs run low on real RAM, Windows uses a \r\nvirtual memory scheme where the hard disk is used as \r\nRAM. (Virtual Memory is available only on 386 and 486 \r\ncomputers.) This virtual RAM is much slower to access, \r\nand using it may significantly slow down operation. This \r\nslowdown depends on factors such as the amount of \r\ndisk space used for virtual memory, and how often it's \r\naccessed.\r\n\r\nThe disk area used for virtual memory is called a Swap \r\nFile. If your system configuration uses a small Swap File \r\nand IntelliDraw is forced to access the disk a great deal, \r\nit will seem sluggish. It may take a long time even to \r\nlaunch. When IntelliDraw has to access the Swap File, its \r\nperformance is slowed; its performance then is directly \r\nrelated to the speed of your hard disk. \r\n\r\nHere's how you check and change the size of your Swap \r\nfile for Windows 3.1:\r\n\r\n- In the Program Manager, open the Main program \r\n group window\r\n- Double-click the Control Panel icon\r\n- Double-click the 386 Enhanced icon\r\n- Click the Virtual Memory Button. This will display an \r\n information window.\r\n- Click the Change button.\r\n\r\nIn the window that opens, you'll see in the New Size \r\nbox a proposed value. If this is 4MB or more, and \r\nperformance has been satisfactory, don't change it. If \r\nperformance has been sluggish, and you've noted \r\nfrequent disk access, increase the size by 50%. Finally:\r\n\r\n- Click OK or Cancel, depending on your findings and \r\n actions, and continue OK'ing or cancelling out of the \r\n dialogs.\r\n- Restart Windows to activate the new settings.\r\n\r\nTo change the swap file size under Windows 3.0, \r\nconsult your Windows manual.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nTHE COMPUTER BEEPS WHEN YOU'VE DONE NOTHING WRONG, OR\r\nSMART LINKED GRAPHICS ARE LEFT IN A DISJOINTED STATE\r\n\r\nBoth these conditions are related to the speed of your \r\nCPU, and to the complexity of the special relationships \r\nin the graphic. \r\n\r\nAfter you make a change to a graphic that has \r\nrelationships such as objects attached to a shape, many \r\nobjects inside a distribution frame, etcetera, IntelliDraw \r\nspends a certain amount of time figuring out where \r\neverything should be redrawn. The more objects are \r\ninvolved and the more complex the relationships, the \r\nmore time this \"link resolution\" requires. Normally, it all \r\nworks, and finishes in short order.\r\n\r\nTo keep IntelliDraw from spending a long time, possibly \r\ntrying to resolve an impossible set of relationships, there \r\nis a time limit that you can set in the Preferences.\r\n\r\nIf IntelliDraw can't resolve the links in that specified \r\ntime, it will beep, and possibly leave the drawing in an \r\nincompletely resolved state. On faster computers \r\nIntelliDraw completes its work well within the default \r\ntime in the preferences. On slower computers you may \r\nneed to allow more time.\r\n\r\nTo change the link resolution time, use the Preferences \r\ncommand (in the Full Menus mode) and double the \r\n\"After dragging\" value in the Link Resolution section of \r\nthe Preferences dialog. Close the dialog and make a \r\nchange to your graphic so that IntelliDraw re-resolves it.\r\n\r\nIf this time change doesn't correct you particular \r\nproblem, you may have established a set of relationships \r\nthat are mutually exclusive, and could never be \r\ncompletely resolved. In that case, examine or undo your \r\nmost recent actions, which may have caused this \r\ncondition. If all else fails, select the objects involved and \r\nchoose Clear Links from the Links menu, and start \r\nfresh.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nHOW VIDEO CARDS AND MODES AFFECT PERFORMANCE\r\n\r\nIf you have a Super VGA display, and are using high \r\nresolution, IntelliDraw will need to use a great deal of \r\nmemory for its off-screen buffer, which is a method of \r\nenabling smooth, flicker-free drawing. This will tax your \r\nRAM, but if you have sufficient real RAM, it should not \r\ndegrade performance.\r\n\r\nTo improve performance without turning off the off-\r\nscreen buffer, reduce the number of displayable colors, \r\nor reduce the resolution.\r\n\r\nTo free up the RAM (real or virtual) otherwise required \r\nby IntelliDraw for its off-screen buffer, you can try \r\nturning off that mode. Use the View Settings command \r\nto do this, and un-check the 'Use off-screen buffer' \r\noption.\r\n\r\nFor 16-bit and 24-bit video cards, IntelliDraw \r\nautomatically turns off the off-screen buffer. You can \r\nturn it on if you want by using the View Settings \r\ncommand to check-mark the 'Use off-screen buffer' \r\noption.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nPERFORMANCE ON PORTABLES\r\n\r\nSome portables save battery power by slowing down the \r\nCPU clock. IntelliDraw's smart features are directly \r\naffected by this slower clock speed. Consult you \r\nportable's manual on this subject, and choose the \r\noptions to run at full clock speed.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nSHORT MENUS AND FULL MENUS\r\n\r\nIntelliDraw will initially open in Short Menus. Some \r\ntools and capabilities mentioned in the manuals and \r\nvideo tape are found only in the Full Menus mode.\r\n\r\nFull Menus mode allows you to access the Preferences \r\nsettings, as well as the Layers palette and special tools.\r\n\r\nTo switch to the Full Menus mode, choose Full Menus \r\nfrom the Edit menu. \r\n\r\nA few menu items relocate to different menus, \r\ndepending on which mode is active. However, the menu \r\ngrouping is still logical.\r\n\r\nThe reference manual refers to all tools and menu items \r\nin Full Menus mode.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nMICROGRAFX WINDOWS DRAW IMPORT\r\n\r\nIntelliDraw does not currently ship with an import filter \r\nthat will directly import native Micrografx Designer or \r\nWindows Draw Images in .DRW format. \r\n\r\nThe capability is available through these various options:\r\n\r\n- Export as .PIC or .EPS from Micrografx Designer or \r\n Windows Draw \r\n\r\nOR\r\n\r\n- IntelliDraw uses the filters residing in the ALDUS \r\n directory. If you own Aldus PageMaker or Aldus \r\n Persuasion, you already own the import filter needed to \r\n import .DRW into IntelliDraw.\r\n\r\nOR\r\n\r\n- If you own a Micrografx product that has import filters \r\n for PageMaker or Persuasion, you can install the filters \r\n into the Aldus folder that IntelliDraw creates.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nGENERAL MAC/WINDOWS FILE SHARING NOTES\r\n\r\nIntelliDraw documents created on Macintosh or \r\nWindows platforms are completely shareable between \r\nthese platforms, across a network, or via properly \r\nformatted disks. However, the two operating systems \r\nhave different file naming and file-typing requirements, \r\nand don't instantly recognize each other's files.\r\n\r\n\r\nSHARING FILES: WINDOWS TO MACINTOSH\r\n\r\nBecause of the different file-typing methods, a \r\ndocument created in Windows IntelliDraw transferred to \r\nthe Macintosh can't be double-clicked to open it. You \r\nmust first launch IntelliDraw, then open the document \r\nvia the Open dialog. Be sure that the Show All option is \r\nchecked in the Open dialog. Once you Save As... on the \r\nMacintosh, that same file will be double-clickable.\r\n\r\n\r\nSHARING FILES: MACINTOSH TO WINDOWS\r\n\r\nMacintosh files typically have names that are longer than \r\n8 characters. Windows requires names of 8 characters \r\nor less, followed by a 3-character extension. In the case \r\nof IntelliDraw, this extension is IDW for working \r\ndocuments, and IDT for template files.\r\n\r\nYou can have Macintosh files recognized by Windows \r\nIntelliDraw by naming them with a name of 8 characters \r\nor less, and adding the proper extension. If you don't \r\nuse an extension, you can still make IntelliDraw \r\nWindows recognize the file in the Open dialog by \r\nchoosing \"All files\" from the drop-down list.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nTHE BEST WAY TO OLE\r\n\r\nThe best way to link your IntelliDraw object with OLE \r\nis to first create a group or a symbol, and then copy and \r\nPaste Link the group to the other application. This will \r\nenable you to add or remove items from the IntelliDraw \r\ngroup, maintaining the existing OLE link. You'll save \r\nthe trouble of re-establishing the link when you have to \r\nmake a change.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nTEXT, ATM AND TRUETYPE\r\n\r\nFor Windows 3.0 systems, you will need to install \r\nAdobe Type Manager (ATM), and a set of Adobe Type \r\n1 outline fonts in order to properly display type that is \r\nrotated or otherwise manipulated in IntelliDraw.\r\n\r\nIf you've installed ATM, and your text still comes out \r\njagged or even as gray boxes, you may not have \r\nproperly installed the outline fonts into your System, or \r\nthey may have been deleted some time after installation. \r\nConsult your ATM installation guide.\r\n\r\nWe recommend that you install ATM even if you have \r\nWindows 3.1, for several reasons:\r\n\r\n- You'll have a wider selection of fonts\r\n- General character positioning will be more consistent \r\n between Windows and Macintosh platforms.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nTEXT APPEARANCE CHANGES WHEN DOCUMENTS ARE TRANSFERRED\r\nBETWEEN MAC AND WINDOWS\r\n\r\nOne major factor is that Windows TrueType fonts don't \r\nhave close equivalents to Macintosh TrueType fonts. \r\nThis affects the size and spacing of text transferred from \r\none platform to another.\r\n\r\nEven with ATM used on both platforms, there may be \r\ndifferences introduced.\r\n\r\nA text block in a cross-platform document may need to \r\nbe size-adjusted to hold the same text that it held in the \r\nplatform on which it was created.\r\n\r\nFor example, the Windows TrueType font Arial will be \r\ninterpreted as the TrueType font Geneva on the \r\nMacintosh. These fonts have different basic dimensions, \r\nand text blocks that contain these fonts will need \r\nadjustment. \r\n\r\nDepending on whether your system utilizes ATM or \r\nTrueType, and on the fonts installed, the IntelliDraw \r\nclip art, which has embedded text instructions on its use, \r\nmay open with its text in an odd state, perhaps flowing \r\nout of the text blocks in which it was created. \r\n\r\nAdjustments you can make include resizing the blocks; \r\nselecting the text blocks and choosing a different font; \r\nor changing the font size or line spacing. Other \r\nadjustments to fit the text back inside the blocks, include \r\nresizing a text block slightly, or typing a space in a text \r\nblock, then deleting it.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nGREEKING TEXT\r\n\r\nWhen text needs to be displayed as extremely small \r\ncharacters, as in highly reduced views or extremely \r\nsmall point sizes (below 3 points), it is displayed as gray \r\nbars, each bar representing a line of text. This is not a \r\nproblem with fonts. It's an intentional process commonly \r\ncalled \"Greeking,\" and found in desktop publishing \r\nprograms as well. It's only a screen-display shortcut, \r\nyour text will print fine. Zooming in will reveal that your \r\ntext is safe.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nTRUETYPE AND HEWLETT-PACKARD PCL PRINTERS \r\n\r\nThere is an option on Hewlett-Packard PCL printers \r\nwith HPPCL5A drivers that allows you to print \r\nTrueType fonts as graphics. This option MUST be \r\nenabled for IntelliDraw to print text correctly on these \r\nprinters. IntelliDraw will print the text without this \r\noption, but the text may cover some graphic objects.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nTHE COLOR OF OBJECTS EXPORTED AS EPS\r\n\r\nColor-filled shapes exported as EPS imports back in as \r\nblack & white in other programs. This is only a screen-\r\ndisplay condition. This is intentionally done in order to \r\nremain compatible with some other applications which \r\ndo not display imported EPS color to the screen. The \r\ngraphic will print in full color or grays.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nEXPORTING TILED GROUPS AND CROPPED GROUPS\r\n\r\nExporting IntelliDraw graphics that contain tiled groups \r\nand cropped groups as Windows metafiles will lose vital \r\ncropping information. The metafile format does not \r\nsupport objects that are cropped inside a shape, so the \r\nresulting Windows metafile image will look like the \r\nshape contents have been unmasked. \r\n\r\nEPS is the format of choice for this type of graphic. \r\nEven though the screen appearance of EPS files may not \r\nmatch the original document, it will print fine.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nEXPORTING OR COPYING GRADIENT-FILLED SHAPES TO \r\nOTHER APPLICATIONS\r\n\r\nIf you want to print IntelliDraw gradients from another \r\napplication to a PostScript printer, you must export \r\nyour drawing as an EPS file. If you use the Windows \r\nclipboard or export to a Windows metafile, your \r\ngradients display correctly, but will print as large \r\nrectangles.\r\n\r\nIf you copy gradients to the clipboard and paste them \r\ninto other drawing programs, they will be disassembled \r\nby the drawing program, and appear as many separate \r\nobjects; they will not be contained within your original \r\nfilled shape.\r\n\r\nEPS is the format of choice for this type of graphic. \r\nEven though the screen appearance of EPS files may not \r\nmatch the original document, it will print fine.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nBREAKING APART TILED GROUPS\r\n\r\nIntelliDraw lets you tile any object or group of selected \r\nobjects. After creating an expanse of tiled objects, you \r\ncan break it apart into individual objects so you can edit \r\nthem as if you had drawn them separately. \r\n\r\nAfter the Break Apart operation, for easier management \r\nof complex tiles, IntelliDraw automatically groups the \r\nindividual tiles. This may not be obvious, because even \r\nif the tiles are plain rectangles, they will be one-item \r\ngroups.\r\n\r\nImmediately after the Break Apart operation, you can \r\nungroup all the tiles (which will already be selected). \r\nThis will make them fully editable as individual objects.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nCLOSING AND CLOSING ALL\r\n\r\nIf you have multiple windows of the same document \r\nopen, the document is not considered closed until you \r\nclose ALL the windows pertaining to it. This includes \r\nthe symbol window, any group windows, page \r\nwindows, and any multiple views onto the same page. \r\nYou can close all those windows at once by holding the \r\nshift key down BEFORE choosing Close in the File \r\nmenu. The shift key changes the Close command to a \r\nClose All command.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nROTATION BY NUMERIC VALUE IS THE REVERSE OF \r\nDOCUMENTED BEHAVIOR\r\n\r\nWhen an object is rotated via the dialog box, entering a \r\nPOSITIVE value rotates the object COUNTERCLOCKWISE, \r\nentering a NEGATIVE value rotates the object CLOCKWISE. \r\nThe documentation calls for clockwise rotation with \r\npositive values. The Rotate Tool is discussed on \r\npgs. 83-84 of the Reference Manual.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nTHE RESHAPE POINTS OF LOCKED OBJECTS CAN BE SHIFTED\r\nBY A LINKED OBJECT\r\n\r\nTo use auto-align against the reshape points of an \r\nobject, you must put it in reshape mode by double-\r\nclicking. If you then align and link an object to a reshape \r\npoint of a locked object, then move the linked object, \r\nthe point of the locked object point will move, as if it \r\nwere unlocked. The following steps will allow you to \r\nwork around the problem:\r\n\r\n- Create a point with the point tool (Full Menus)\r\n- Align the new point with the point on the reshapeable \r\n object\r\n- With the point objects selected, choose Move to Back \r\n from the Object menu\r\n- Lock that point object. \r\n\r\nYou can then align other objects and dimension lines \r\nagainst that locked point, and nothing will unexpectedly \r\nshift. (The properties of a locked object in Reshape \r\nmode are misstated on page 139).\r\n\r\nYou may run across this condition in the Space Planning \r\nexercise in the manual. One possible place is when you \r\nfirst set the space between the hallway walls, and when \r\nyou set the space of the prototype lab doorway. Use \r\nmanual dragging at 200% magnification to set these \r\ndistances.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nKANJI SUPPORT\r\n\r\nIntelliDraw does not currently support the Kanji \r\nalphabet.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nAVOID OVER-LINKING\r\n\r\nIntelliDraw gives the day-to-day user the ability to link \r\ngraphics in all kinds of relationships. You may have the \r\nnatural tendency to link everything to everything else, \r\nand produce an amazingly tangled web. Our advice is to \r\nonly link what you need to.\r\n\r\nConsider linking as the fasteners in a tool-kit. You only \r\nuse them when it makes sense. You would not, for \r\ninstance, glue your cup to your desk, or bolt your car to \r\nthe floor of the garage.\r\n\r\nRemember that IntelliDraw offers other object \r\nmanagement controls like grouping and locking, which \r\nare familiar and easily manageable.\r\n\r\nIn other words, use linking sparingly to better control \r\nyour documents.\r\n\r\nBecause most links are not obvious unless you change \r\nsomething and watch the results, it's perfectly possible \r\nto establish multiple identical links between the same \r\nobjects. These are redundant, and while they don't hurt \r\nanything, they can add processing overhead to otherwise \r\nsimpler actions. You can use Show Links to examine the \r\n\"wiring\" in your drawing, and check for multiple \r\nidentical links. \r\n\r\nEarly in your linking experience, it's best, and least time-\r\nconsuming, to clear a link and re-establish it correctly. \r\nAs you us it more, you'll become link-savvy, and you'll \r\nfly through your linked relationships, recognizing them \r\non sight and making swift changes.\r\n______________________________________________________\r\n\r\nAND FINALLY...\r\n\r\nThank you for purchasing IntelliDraw.
