However, to gain the full benefit of reduced\r\nmemory consumption and more robust disk compression, it is recommended\r\nthat you convert your Doublespace or SuperStor drives to Stacker. You can\r\nuse the conversion option in the Novell DOS 7 SETUP program. Run SETUP\r\nafter you install Novell DOS 7. Note that the conversion does not support\r\nSuperstor Pro drives.\r\n\r\nFor performance reasons, this conversion operates initially on the\r\ncontainer file format only. Conversion of actual data to Stacker format\r\nis performed subsequently whenever any existing SuperStor or Doublespace\r\ncompressed data is written back to the disk.\r\n\r\nIf you run the DISKOPT program on a drive that is partially converted,\r\nthe disk optimizer automatically performs a complete Stacker conversion\r\nby compressing all remaining data. If you run Setup to change the size\r\nof the stacker drive, or try to unstack the drive, it must have been\r\npreviously converted entirely to Stacker or you may encounter error\r\nmessages. Refer to the Novell DOS 7 User Guide or DOSBook for information \r\nabout DISKOPT and its options. \r\n\r\nNote: Early versions of Norton Utilities 7.0 will incorrectly diagnose a\r\nconverted Superstor or Doublespace drive as faulty. THIS IS NOT A FAULT \r\nON THE DRIVE. Please contact your supplier for an updated version of the\r\nNorton Utilities.\r\n\r\nStacker\r\n=======\r\n\r\nDo not attempt to compress Bernoulli bootable drives. You can compress\r\nBernoulli drives that are not bootable, however.\r\n\r\nNWCACHE \r\n=======\r\n\r\nDelayed write mode is disabled as part of the default configuration\r\nfor NWCACHE. This is a safety feature to prevent loss of data if the\r\ncomputer is switched off before disk writes have been completed. Enabling\r\ndelayed write mode will improve performance but you must make sure you do\r\nNOT switch off your computer before all data is written to the disk. Do\r\nthis in one of the following ways:\r\n\r\n1. Perform a \"soft boot\" (press Ctrl+Alt+Del) before switching the\r\n computer off. A soft boot automatically flushes all pending data to\r\n disk.\r\n\r\n2. Wait beyond the delayed write time you specified, after the disk access\r\n light goes out.\r\n\r\n3. Wait for the system prompt to return (see below).\r\n\r\nWhen delayed write mode is enabled, the cache is 'flushed' (all data is\r\nwritten to the disk) BEFORE the system prompt returns, by default. This is\r\na safety feature. You can disable (or re-enable) this feature by specifying\r\nthe following option in the NWCACHE start-up or control command at the\r\nsystem prompt:\r\n\r\n/FLUSH=ON|OFF\r\n\r\nIf delayed write is enabled (on a computer that is running the Personal\r\nNetWare server software), you can also save memory by setting the number\r\nof I/O buffers to zero via the NET ADMIN program.\r\n\r\nUsing CD-ROM Drives\r\n===================\r\n\r\nTo use a CD-ROM drive with Novell DOS 7, the device driver for your\r\nCD-ROM drive must be loaded. CONFIG.SYS must include a DEVICE (or\r\nDEVICEHIGH) statement that loads the appropriate driver (the one that\r\ncame with your CD-ROM drive). The DEVICE statement must include a\r\n/D:drivername parameter, where drivername is the 'signature' assigned\r\nto the driver.\r\n\r\nNovell DOS 7 includes the NWCDEX program to provide access to CD-ROM\r\ndrives. You can load NWCDEX at the system prompt or in the AUTOEXEC.BAT\r\nfile. Note that the device driver that came with your CD-ROM drive must\r\nbe loaded BEFORE you load NWCDEX (see previous paragraph).\r\n\r\nNote: You can use MSCDEX to access CD-ROM drives, but using NWCDEX allows\r\nyou to use DPMS and saves memory.\r\n\r\nThe syntax of NWCDEX is as follows:\r\n\r\nNWCDEX [/?|/H] /D:drivername [/E] [/L:letter] [/M:number] [/N] [/V]\r\n\r\n/?|/H\t\tDisplays help text.\r\n\r\n/D:drivername\tSpecifies the name of the CD-ROM driver. This name matches\r\n\t\tthe drivername specified in the DEVICE statement that loads\r\n\t\tthe driver.\r\n\r\n/E\t\tSpecifies the use of expanded memory (if available) when\r\n\t\tDPMS is not available.\r\n\r\n/L:letter\tSpecifies the drive letter to assign to the CD-ROM drive.\r\n\t\tThe default is to use the first available (unused) drive.\r\n\r\n/M:number\tSpecifies the number of sector buffers to allocate. The\r\n\t\tdefault is 14.\r\n\r\n/N\t\tDisables the use of DPMS. By default, NWCDEX will use\r\n\t\textended memory if DPMS is not available.\r\n\r\n/V\t\tPrints debug information during initialization.\r\n\r\nExample\r\n-------\r\n\r\nThe following examples show the appropriate statements in CONFIG.SYS and\r\nAUTOEXEC.BAT to load and access a CD-ROM drive. In this example, the CD-ROM\r\ndriver supplied with the drive is CDROMDRV.SYS and it is to be accessed as\r\ndrive G:\r\n\r\nin CONFIG.SYS:\r\n\r\nDEVICE=C:\\NWDOS\\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:NWCD000\r\n\r\nin AUTOEXEC.BAT:\r\n\r\nNWCDEX /D:NWCD000 /L:G\r\n\r\nFull-Screen Programs and Non-Standard VGAs\r\n==========================================\r\n\r\nSome portable, laptop, and notebook computers with LCD or TFT displays \r\nsupport a non-standard VGA text mode known as 'Expanded' or 'Stretched' \r\ntext. This mode 'stretches' the standard 80x25 (400 pixels high) text \r\nmode so that it fills the entire physical screen which is 480 pixels \r\nhigh. This mode, if used, may interfere with the enhanced text mode of\r\nthe full screen programs, such as NET ADMIN. \r\n\r\nIf you encounter problems, it is recommended that you disable the \r\n'Stretched' text on your computer. Refer to the documentation for your \r\ncomputer for information about CMOS setup configuration.\r\n\r\nIf you cannot disable this mode or prefer to keep 'Stretched' \r\nmode enabled, you can disable the enhanced text mode of the full \r\nscreen programs in one of three ways:\r\n\r\n1. By entering the name of the program followed by the /N switch \r\n at the system prompt \r\n\r\n2. By selecting to disable the enhanced text mode globally from within \r\n the SETUP program\r\n\r\n3. By editing the NWDOS.INI file to change NewUI = ON to NewUI = OFF\r\n\r\nUndeleting Files Across the Network\r\n===================================\r\n\r\nYou can use UNDELETE to recover deleted files across the network on both\r\nPersonal NetWare and NetWare 2, 3, and 4 servers. To undelete a file from\r\na Personal NetWare server, the file must have been saved as a pending\r\ndelete file by DELWATCH and DELWATCH must have been run on the Personal\r\nNetWare server prior to the file being deleted. Note that it is NOT\r\nnecessary to run DELWATCH on the client computer from which UNDELETE is\r\nbeing run.\r\n\r\nEMM386 Memory Manager\r\n=====================\r\n\r\nFor applications that require more EMS/XMS handles, add the following\r\noption to the EMM386 DEVICE statement in CONFIG.SYS to increase the\r\nnumber of handles available:\r\n\r\nHANDLES=n (where n is a number from 0 to 255)\r\n\r\nDOS Protected Mode Services (DPMS)\r\n==================================\r\n\r\nBe aware that the DPMS driver must always be loaded before the software\r\nthat uses it (NWCACHE, SERVER.EXE, etc.).\r\n\r\nLoading LOCK Permanently Under the Task Manager\r\n===============================================\r\n\r\nYou can load LOCK as a permanent task under the Task Manager by\r\nusing the LOCK /P option with the TASKMGR /C command as follows:\r\n\r\nTASKMGR /C LOCK password /P\r\n\r\nwhere password is the password you use to unlock the system. \r\n\r\nNetwork Drive Mappings under the Task Manager\r\n=============================================\r\n\r\nThe Task Manager defaults to global NetWare drive mappings. Changes\r\nmade to drive mappings in one DOS session are duplicated to ALL DOS\r\nsessions.\r\n\r\nLAN Workplace for DOS Support under the Task Manager\r\n====================================================\r\n\r\nThe Task Manager supports LAN Workplace for DOS. To enable it, you\r\nmust edit the TASKMGR.INI file. Uncomment the following two lines:\r\n\r\nvxd=c:\\lwfd\\vtcpip.386\r\n\r\nand\r\n\r\nGlobalPages=2\r\n\r\nRefer to the instructions contained in the TASKMGR.INI file for more\r\ninformation.\r\n\r\nLoad the network drivers (including TCPIP.EXE) before loading the Task\r\nManager.\r\n\r\nRunning 4DOS under the Task Manager\r\n===================================\r\n\r\nTo run 4DOS under the Task Manager (multitasker), you must edit the\r\nTASKMGR.INI file to make the following change in the [Shell] section:\r\n\r\nExec=FALSE\r\nto\r\nExec=TRUE \r\n\r\nUsing the Task Switcher and Personal NetWare Server\r\n===================================================\r\n\r\nIf you are using the task switcher with the Personal NetWare server,\r\nit is recommended that you add the following line to your NET.CFG file:\r\n\r\nALTERNATE CALLDOS = ON\r\n\r\nNote: This line is required for Task Switching ONLY and will not be used\r\nin Multi-Tasking mode.\r\n\r\nDOSBook Corrections\r\n===================\r\n\r\nDOSKEY\r\n\r\nThe parameters for the DOSKEY command have changed and are incorrectly\r\ndocumented in the \"Command Reference\" chapter of DOSBook. Use DOSKEY as\r\nfollows:\r\n\r\nDOSKEY [/?] [/M] [/R] [/B=nnnn] [/H] [/I] [/O] [macro=[text]]\r\n\r\nwhere\r\n\r\n/?\t\tDisplays help text about DOSKEY.\r\n\r\n/M\t\tLists all the DOSKEY macros currently stored in the\r\n\t\tbuffer.\r\n\r\n/R\t\tClears all macros from the command line buffer and\r\n\t\tinstalls a new version of DOSKEY.\r\n\r\n/B=nnnn\t\tChanges the size of the macro and command line history\r\n\t\tbuffer, where nnnn is the size in number of bytes. The name of this file should be PNWLOGIN.BAT.\r\n\r\nOne-time Login\r\n==============\r\n\r\n\"One-time login\" is a facility that allows a user to log in to both the\r\nlocal computer and multiple network servers (and a workgroup) by entering\r\na username and password ONCE only.\r\n\r\nOne-time login works by remaking the network connections previously saved\r\nin a local login script. When the login script is rerun, the one-time\r\nlogin username and password are substituted each time they are requested\r\nby a LOGIN command in the login script. One-time login requires that the\r\nsame username and password are used on all servers and the workgroup. By\r\ndefault, the LOCK program also uses the one-time login password.\r\n\r\nTo use the one-time login facility, your computer must be configured so\r\nthat Novell DOS 7 security is enabled and the Personal NetWare server\r\nis loaded. A local user must be defined, as documented in the \"Creating\r\nand Modifying User Accounts\" section of the \"Setting Up the Network\"\r\nchapter in the Novell DOS 7 User Guide and DOSBook.\r\n\r\nTo set up one-time login, do the following:\r\n\r\n1. Save your current network settings to your local login script. This is\r\n documented in the \"Saving Connections\" section of the \"Using the \r\n Network\" chapter in the Novell DOS 7 User Guide and DOSBook.\r\n\r\n The next time you reboot your computer and log in, you will be logged \r\n back in to the workgroup and servers automatically and drives will be\r\n remapped automatically.\r\n\r\nConnecting to NetWare 2 and 3 Servers\r\n=====================================\r\n\r\nIf you experience difficulty connecting to NetWare 2 or 3 servers, ask \r\nyour system administrator to check that you have the correct Frame settings\r\nfor your network in NET.CFG.\r\n\r\nNotes for Existing NetWare 2 and 3 Users\r\n========================================\r\n\r\n1. Do not use NETX.COM or related shells with Personal NetWare. The\r\n Personal NetWare client gives you simultaneous access to NetWare 2, 3,\r\n and 4 servers as well as Personal NetWare servers.\r\n\r\n2. Path names must be less than 64 characters long. VLMs cannot support\r\n a path name of more than 64 characters. To use longer paths, map a root\r\n drive and continue from there.\r\n\r\nUsing a Network Copy of MS Windows on the Local Server\r\n======================================================\r\n\r\nIf you run a network installation of MS Windows on your the local server\r\nand you want to use that version of MS Windows at the server, you must map\r\na drive to the server and make sure that your path statement references\r\nboth the network copy of MS Windows and your own MS Windows directory.\r\n\r\nIncreasing the Number of File Handles\r\n=====================================\r\n\r\nIf, as you run more applications and add more users, you encounter\r\nproblems running applications across the network, be aware that the\r\nnumber of file handles allocated in the CONFIG.SYS file at the server\r\nmay not be sufficient. This may also be true when you are running the\r\nserver under MS Windows. An indication that this situation has occurred \r\nwould be getting unexpected \"File not found\" or \"Directory not found\" \r\nerror messages when doing a DIR command to a drive on that server.\r\n\r\nThe documentation for your applications should indicate the number of \r\nfile handles required per user; make sure that you allow the correct number \r\nin the server's CONFIG.SYS, given the number of users running the \r\napplication and the number of times the application is run. If necessary, \r\nchange the FILES value. If a value greater than 255 is required, use \r\nNET ADMIN to reconfigure the server so that it does not use the CONFIG.SYS \r\nFILES value and set the required value.\r\n\r\nOEM-supplied Network Board Drivers\r\n==================================\r\n\r\nTo use a third-party network board driver that does not include a .INS\r\nfile, do the following:\r\n\r\n1. Copy the driver file to the directory into which you installed\r\n Personal NetWare. For example:\r\n\r\n COPY A:\\MYDRIVER.COM C:\\NWCLIENT\r\n\r\n2. Choose to accept the changes and continue, to confirm your choice. \r\n\r\nRunning Personal NetWare with Other Networking Products\r\n=======================================================\r\n\r\nThe name (NET.EXE) of the Personal NetWare NET program is likely to\r\nexist in other networking products. After you install Novell DOS 7 with\r\nPersonal NetWare, the PATH command will cause the operating system to\r\nsearch the NWCLIENT directory first. NWCLIENT contains NET.EXE. If you\r\nwant to use a different NET.EXE program, edit the PATH command so that\r\nthe appropriate directory is searched BEFORE the NWCLIENT directory.\r\n\r\nAlternatively, you may find that if you install a different networking\r\nproduct (or MS Windows), the PATH command is changed so that the NWCLIENT\r\ndirectory is no longer searched first and a different NET.EXE program\r\nis run instead of Personal NetWare NET.EXE. If you want the Personal\r\nNetWare NET program to run, edit the PATH command so that NWCLIENT is\r\nsearched first.\r\n\r\nThe Personal NetWare Tutorial\r\n=============================\r\n\r\nThere are two tutorials supplied with Personal NetWare.\r\nOne describes how to use DOS versions of the Personal NetWare programs, \r\nthe other the MS Windows versions.\r\n\r\nTo install the tutorial for MS Windows, load MS Windows and run\r\nWINTUTOR.EXE from \"Tutorial disk 1\". Follow the instructions given on\r\nthe screen. Once installation is complete, run the tutorial by selecting\r\nthe Tutorial icon from the Personal Netware Tutorial program group.\r\n\r\nTo install the tutorial for DOS, insert \"Tutorial disk 1\" in your\r\ndiskette drive and run DOSTUTOR.EXE from that drive. Follow the\r\ninstructions given on the screen.
