README CONVENTIONS\r\n=====================\r\nIf you have questions about procedures or commands mentioned\r\nin this file, you will probably find answers in the IBM\r\nDOS User's Guide and Reference. The following paragraphs\r\ndescribe frequently mentioned topics that the guide covers in\r\nmore detail.\r\n\r\nMany sections of the readme discuss changing your CONFIG.SYS\r\nfile. For detailed information about modifying a CONFIG.SYS\r\nfile, see Chapter 11 of the DOS User's Guide and Reference.\r\n\r\nThe readme often refers to DEVICE commands in your CONFIG.SYS\r\nfile. For example, one section recommends \"adding a machine:1\r\nswitch to the DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS command in your CONFIG.SYS\r\nfile.\" These DEVICE= statements indicate the type of command\r\nin the CONFIG.SYS file. You need to modify these statements to\r\nreflect the configuration of your system. For more information,\r\nsee the DEVICE command in Chapter 14 of the DOS User's\r\nGuide and Reference.\r\n\r\nThe readme sometimes asks you to use the EXPAND command to copy\r\nfiles from the distribution disks to your hard disk. See Chapter\r\n14 of the DOS User's Guide and Reference for more\r\ninformation about using the EXPAND command.\r\n\r\n\r\n2. MACHINE-SPECIFIC HIMEM.SYS SWITCHES\r\n--------------------------------------\r\nTo install DOS 5.0 on a system listed in this section,\r\nyou must do the following:\r\n 1. Insert Disk 1 in drive A and restart your system to\r\n run Setup.\r\n 2. When Setup ends, press F3.\r\n 3. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as follows:\r\n a. Add the appropriate /machine switch to the\r\n DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS command. For example, if you have an\r\n Intel 301z, your DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS command would look\r\n like this:\r\n device=c:\\dos\\himem.sys /machine:8\r\n b. Restart your system.\r\n\r\n System Switch\r\n ------ ------\r\n Bull Micral 60 /machine:16\r\n COMPUADD 386 systems /machine:1 or /machine:8\r\n Datamedia 386/486 /machine:2\r\n Hitachi HL500C /machine:8\r\n Intel 301z or 302 /machine:8\r\n JDR 386/33 /machine:1\r\n Toshiba 5100 /machine:7\r\n UNISYS PowerPort /machine:2\r\n\r\n3. INSTALLING DOS 5.0 ON AN OS/2 DUAL-BOOT SYSTEM\r\n----------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you install your operating system by using the BOOT /OS2 or\r\nBOOT /DOS command, install DOS 5.0 as follows:\r\n 1. Start DOS by using the BOOT /DOS command.\r\n 2. Run Setup.\r\n\r\nIf you use the form of an OS/2 dual-boot system that prompts\r\nyou at startup to select an operating system, do the following:\r\n 1. Install DOS 5.0 on your hard disk.\r\n 2. Create a system disk by inserting a disk in drive A and\r\n typing the FORMAT A: /S command.\r\n 3. Delete the COMMAND.COM file from the floppy disk.\r\n 4. On the floppy disk, create a CONFIG.SYS file that\r\n includes the following:\r\n shell=c:\\dos\\command.com /p /e:256\r\n 5. On the floppy disk, create an AUTOEXEC.BAT file that\r\n includes the following commands:\r\n path=c:\\dos\r\n append /e\r\n append c:\\dos\r\n prompt $p$g\r\n set comspec=\r\n 6. Reinstall the OS/2 operating system on your hard disk.\r\n 7. Insert in drive A the system disk you created and restart\r\n your computer.\r\n 8. Run the dual-boot program (C:\\DUALBOOT\\DUALBOOT.EXE).\r\n\r\n4. NOTES ON MEMORY MANAGEMENT\r\n=============================\r\n\r\n4.1 Problems Loading into the Upper Memory Area\r\n-----------------------------------------------\r\nSome computers with hard disk controllers, specifically bus\r\nmaster DMA controllers, may not be able to load device drivers\r\nor programs into the upper memory area. Try adding a\r\nDEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS command before any DEVICEHIGH commands in\r\nyour CONFIG.SYS file.\r\n\r\n4.2 Intel Expanded-Memory Driver (EMM.SYS)\r\n------------------------------------------\r\nUse the Intel expanded-memory driver NE or E switch when\r\ninstalling the driver for Aboveboard. See your Aboveboard\r\ndocumentation for more information.\r\n\r\n4.3 Phoenix BIOS and HIMEM.SYS\r\n------------------------------\r\nIf your system includes a Phoenix BIOS and DOS 5.0 doesn't\r\nwork correctly, try adding a /machine:1 or /machine:8 switch\r\nto the DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS command in your CONFIG.SYS file.\r\n\r\n5. NOTES ON WINDOWS\r\n===================\r\n\r\n5.1 DOS Applications in Expanded Memory\r\n---------------------------------------\r\nIf you load device drivers and memory-resident programs into\r\nthe upper memory area, and you run DOS applications that use\r\nexpanded memory under Windows 3.0, specify the RAM switch with\r\nthe DEVICE=EMM386.EXE command in your CONFIG.SYS file.\r\n\r\n5.2 \"Unable to start Enhanced Mode Windows\" Message\r\n---------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you start Windows enhanced mode 3.0, and get a message\r\nstating \"EMM386: Unable to start Enhanced Mode Windows due\r\nto invalid path specification for EMM386\", add the /y=path\r\nswitch to the DEVICE=EMM386.EXE command in your CONFIG.SYS\r\nfile. \"Path\" specifies the location of the EMM386.EXE file\r\nwhen you start Windows.\r\n\r\nFor example, if the EMM386.EXE file is in the \\DOS directory on\r\ndrive C, your command would look like this:\r\n DEVICE=EMM386.EXE /y=c:\\dos\\emm386.exe\r\n\r\n5.3 WINA20.386 File\r\n-------------------\r\nSetup installs a read-only file named WINA20.386 in your root\r\ndirectory.\r\n\r\nIf you move the WINA20.386 file to a different directory, do the\r\nfollowing:\r\n 1. Add a SWITCHES=/W command to your CONFIG.SYS file.\r\n 2. Add a DEVICE=[drive:][path]]WINA20.386 command to the\r\n [386Enh] section of your Windows SYSTEM.INI file.\r\n\r\n5.4 \"High Memory Area in Use\" Message (Windows/386 2.1)\r\n-------------------------------------------------------\r\nYou cannot run Windows/386 2.1 when DOS 5.0 is loaded into\r\nthe high memory area. Also, the DOS 5.0 versions of\r\nSMARTDRV.SYS and RAMDRIVE.SYS are not compatible with Windows/386\r\n2.1. To run Windows/386 2.1 with DOS 5.0, use the versions of\r\nSMARTDRV.SYS and RAMDRIVE.SYS that came with Windows and remove\r\nthe DOS=HIGH command, if any, from your CONFIG.SYS file.\r\n\r\n5.5 \"Cannot run Windows in standard mode\" Message\r\n-------------------------------------------------\r\nIf you have a DEVICE=EMM386.EXE command in your CONFIG.SYS file,\r\nyou cannot run Windows 3.0 in standard mode. Either remove\r\nthe DEVICE=EMM386.EXE command or run Windows in real or enhanced\r\nmode.\r\n\r\nNOTE: Using EMM386 may reduce the amount of extended memory\r\navailable to Windows and cause Windows to try to start in\r\nstandard mode. To prevent this, reduce the amount of extended\r\nmemory that other device drivers use. For example, if you are\r\nusing SMARTDRV, try setting the MinCacheSize parameter to 0.\r\n\r\n6. MAKING YOUR HARDWARE COMPATIBLE WITH DOS 5.0\r\n==================================================\r\n\r\n6.1 Using a Mouse with DOS Shell\r\n-----------------------------------\r\nIf you have a Logitech or Microsoft mouse, use the following\r\ndriver versions with DOS Shell:\r\n Logitech mouse version 5.01 or later\r\n Microsoft mouse version 6.21 or later\r\n\r\n6.2 XGA and EMM386.EXE\r\n----------------------\r\nIf you use an XGA display with EMM386.EXE, you may need to\r\nexclude certain memory ranges with the EMM386 EXCLUDE option\r\n(x=). To determine which memory ranges to exclude, use your\r\nreference disk to view the memory map.\r\n\r\n\r\n7. MAKING YOUR NETWORK COMPATIBLE WITH DOS 5.0\r\n=================================================\r\n\r\n7.1 DOS Shell and Networks\r\n-----------------------------\r\nMost network software won't work correctly if you start it from\r\na DOS Shell command prompt. Start your network before starting\r\nDOS Shell.\r\n\r\n7.2 AT&T StarGROUP\r\n-------------------\r\nIf your AT&T StarGROUP version does not support DOS 5.0,\r\ncontact your AT&T representative or the AT&T National Systems\r\nSupport Hotline for information about required modifications or\r\nupgrades.\r\n\r\n7.3 PC-NFS 3.0\r\n--------------\r\nIf you use PC-NFS 3.0 with DOS Shell, DOS Shell may\r\ndisplay more drives than you have currently enabled. To\r\nprevent this, use the PC-NFS /d switch to specify the number\r\nof drives you are using. For more information, see your PC-NFS\r\ndocumentation.\r\n\r\nIf you can't use the COPY or XCOPY command on PC-NFS 3.01,\r\ncontact your vendor to get an updated version of the PCNFS.SYS\r\ndevice driver.\r\n\r\n7.4 TOPS Network\r\n----------------\r\nIf your system is a TOPS workstation, the DOS Shell MOVE\r\ncommand may not work.\r\n\r\nDon't use the LOADHIGH command with a TOPS network.\r\n\r\n8. DOCUMENTATION CORRECTIONS AND ADDITIONS\r\n==========================================\r\n\r\n8.1 New CV.COM for CodeView\r\n---------------------------\r\nUsers of CodeView versions 3.0 to 3.13 should use the program\r\nCV.COM to start CodeView. For more details, see the section\r\non CodeView in the file APPNOTES.TXT.\r\n\r\n8.2 Documentation Corrections\r\n-----------------------------\r\nThe following are corrections to the DOS User's\r\nGuide and Reference:\r\n\r\nCOMP /? Help:\r\n Online help for the COMP command /d switch should state that\r\n the default format is hexadecimal.\r\n\r\nFORMAT Command:\r\n If you can't use the FORMAT command to format an\r\n unformatted disk, try using the /u switch.\r\n\r\nMIRROR Command:\r\n You cannot use the MIRROR command with a network drive or\r\n any drive you created by using the ASSIGN, SUBST, or JOIN\r\n command.\r\n\r\nUNDELETE Command:\r\n Do not use the UNDELETE command in the following\r\n circumstances:\r\n * When other programs are active.\r\n * With the LOAD= command or the Shift+Enter key\r\n combination in Windows.\r\n * With Task Swapper in DOS Shell.\r\n\r\nUNFORMAT Command:\r\n The UNFORMAT /p switch is not compatible with the /j switch.\r\n\r\n8.3 Hercules Display Adapter (MSHERC.COM)\r\n-----------------------------------------\r\nIf you use DOS Editor or QBasic with a Hercules display\r\nadapter, run MSHERC.COM before you run either program.\r\n\r\n8.4 QBasic \"On Error\" Command\r\n-----------------------------\r\nOnline help for QBasic incorrectly states that\r\nON ERROR RESUME NEXT is a valid statement. The correct syntax\r\nis as follows:\r\n ON ERROR GOTO <LINE/LABEL>\r\n\r\n8.5 SMARTDRV and Third-Party Partitions\r\n-----------------------------------------\r\nIf your system includes a third-party disk partition and you\r\ntry to use SMARTDRV, you may receive a message stating that\r\nyou cannot load SMARTDRV.\r\n\r\nYou can force SMARTDRV to load by specifying the /p switch.\r\nHowever, doing so may corrupt your hard disk if either of the\r\nfollowing conditions is true:\r\n * Your hard disk contains more than 1024 cylinders.\r\n * Your hard disk is not supported by the system's ROM BIOS.\r\n\r\nIf you have partitions created by using third-party\r\ndisk-partitioning software, use SMARTDRV ONLY if you are sure\r\nyour hard disk contains 1024 or fewer cylinders AND it is\r\nsupported directly by the system's ROM BIOS."
