a) To make the machine easier to use
Part of the purpose of the operating system is to relieve the programmer of some very complex tasks of programming and give him an “enhanced”machine.
b)To make move efficient use of the resources of the hardware
Many operation systems provide the facility of multi-programming,where a number of different programs can be loaded into the machine at the same time thereby using the CPU more effectively.

所谓操作系统，是通常由制造者随硬件提供的一组程序，有两方面的基本作用：
a).使计算机更易于使用操作系统的部分作用在于：把程序设计者从一些非常复杂的程序设计任务中解脱出来，提供给程序设计者一台“增强型”计算机。
b).使硬件资源的使用更为有效许多操作系统都提供了多道程序功能，即可以将一系列不同程序同时调入计算机，从而更有效地使用CPU。 (小雪)
