        A device used by your computer to communicate to remote computers through the phone lines.Modems come in various speeds, or baud rates, such as 1200,2400,9600,and 14400(bps).To connect to an on-line bulletin boart service(BBS),you need a modem and communications software.An internal modem can beinserted inside your computer`s case.An external modem can be attached to a standard RS-232 serial port.

        这是一种计算机与远程计算机通过电话线路通信时所用的设备。调制解调器有各种速度，或者称为波特率，如1200、2400、9600和14，400bps(位/秒)。如果你要接入到联机电子公告牌系统(BBS)，则需要一台调制解调器和通信软件。内置式调制解调器可以插到计算机机箱内。外接式的调制解调器可以接到标准的RS-232串行口上。
